User Image Ethilerah had already spoken with Lark and his best runners, informing them of her plan for the warren on the hill. Their rah was cunning and swift, a true child of El-ahrairah and he greatly admired her for her strength and courage, even in the face of adversity. Truth was, these had been the toughest seasons yet and their own were suffering insurmountable loss. Things were looking up, though. Lark had high hopes and, just as always, he was ready and willing to hop when ordered by his rah. He didn't question her decisions and she hadn't led him astray thus far - even with the rotten luck they had been having. What she did and, ultimately what he did, was for the betterment of the warren in it's entirety.

The buck paced the runs quietly, engulfed in his own thoughts. He would need to retire to the burrow he had taken as his own soon enough. He and the others would need as much rest as they could procure before the journey to the hill, but there was something he felt he needed to do first and that was to decide who would be his second in command. It would be a dangerous mission they were undertaking and while he didn't want to think of what may happen to himself, Frith forbid he die and the entire group be left headless. He definitely wanted the buck to be one of their own - he did not trust those from the warren they had overtaken to back him in this. This had to be a rabbit he could trust and thus, he found himself just outside the entrance to Feather Ear's burrow. He had paw-picked the rabbits he thought best suited for this particular endeavor and the rah seemed to agree with his decisions. He didn't necessarily consider the other male to be a friend, but neither did he consider him an enemy. He was competition to be sure, but he did not question the buck's loyalties to their rah. He cleared his throat, which was slightly hoarse from the lack of use since their meeting none too long ago. Surely some word had gotten around the warren in whispers by now, but he didn't feel comfortable talking about it with those who were not directly involved.

"Feather Ear, are you still awake?"

User ImageFeather Ear had been none too surprised by their Rah’s resourcefulness when it came to their current predicament. The mission was a curious one and when it had been pitched he had been one of the first in line to sign up. Truth was that he needed something, anything, to keep his mind focused. He of course believed in the mission and their Rah, however there were some personal feelings he was still working through. Some might call him sentimental or naïve for mourning the loss of his doe so deeply, but they wouldn’t truly understand. He still moved forward, doing the work his doe would have been proud to see him do but he missed her.

He lay huddled in his burrow, and it was cold without her presence. He hated nights it left time for his mind to wander, and wander it oft did right into things he didn’t want it to. Some might feel he was just a grubber, mourning the loss of his doe simply because of the position it lost him. It wasn’t that, perhaps he was too soft at heart, perhaps not. It was hard for those not of his warren to understand how such a soft hearted buck could make anything of himself. Such vicious military minded brutes, he was sure that is what the few surviving rabbits of the taken over warren thought of them.

It wasn’t just that though, yes what they had done was… cruel at best but it wasn’t like they hadn’t given them a chance either. They weren’t bad rabbits, and they had had rough patches but there had been moments of joy as well. Moments when they, as a collective, were all happy… he missed those days. Racing across the grass with his doe, letting her win just to watch her prance about proudly. They were more than just half starved crazed monsters, or they were at one point. He wondered vaguely if they would ever achieve that level of happiness again.

He was disrupted from his thoughts and wandering by a voice, one he couldn’t say he knew very well but could place as the brown buck Lark.

“Aye, I am.” He called twisting himself to face the entrance of his burrow. “Please, come in Lark.” He stated looking at the hole and waiting, ears pressed back against his head.

"Ah, very good." And he meant it.

At the invitation to enter, the tawny furred buck did just that, slipping inside the available space of Feather Ear's chosen burrow. He was glad he hadn't woken the white and brown rabbit from resting and felt less like he was intruding. He didn't like the stink of the warren in general - even with the bodies removed and the dirty soil cleaned out, it still smelled of strange rabbits and the hard fought battle beneath their own scent. Fortunately, in the occupied burrows, such as this one, it was hardly noticeable and he felt at ease as he sat before Feather Ear. He scratched at an itch that had been festering just under his chin with the claws of his hind paw before starting.

"Are you ready to leave in the morning? I reckon it'll be rough goings until we've returned." At least the other rabbit had a slight advantage in the snow, at least if he managed to obscure his brown marks. His golden eyes briefly flitted over the scars on the white buck's side. He wondered how he got it, but wasn't sure he felt like inquiring, at least not at the moment.

"How are you feeling about this whole trip in general, really?"

Feather shifted slightly ears perking forward for a moment as he mulled over his answer. He supposed he was as read as he would ever be honestly. He was ready to face the challenges it would undoubtedly bring and lay his life on the line for warren and brethren if it came to that.

“As ready as I shall ever be. I’m not so young anymore as to believe it will be without challenge but I am ready to face the challenges as they undoubtedly crop up.” He stated rolling his shoulder blades in an odd sort of rabbit shrug. He vaguely wondered what Lark was getting at, as their leader he dearly hopped the other believed in the mission. Then again, he assumed their Rah would not make their leader a coward.

“I… believe in this mission. Our Rah has never done wrong by us, she tries just as we do and she put herself on the line fighting beside us the whole way.” He paused here a moment. “I’m ready for this; I will do all that is in my power to accomplish this mission and get us all back alive. I worry if the two new rabbits joining us are ready for this but not much I can say about it now.” He lifted a hind leg to scratch his ear gently.

“I believe in our Rah, and this is a real chance. I just hope the rest of our party is as ready, the two new rabbits can’t be as loyal to our Rah as ourselves.” He just automatically assumed Lark was loyal to the Rah; he would be shocked if he wasn’t. After all he was here leading a precarious mission, risking his life for their warren.

“Are you worried?”

"Good."

He liked Feather's response. He was certain the other was loyal to Ethilerah, but hearing him say it was reassuring to Lark, who weighed the other rabbit's words quietly. Yes, yes he was sure he was making the right decision with this. Feather Ear would hopefully prove to be a great rabbit to rely upon on this mission and, with any luck, missions to come. Satisfied, he offered the other male a slight, ghost of a smile.

"Yes, but it is only natural to have a healthy fear of danger. Without it, what would we be other than foolhardy bucks? Other than dead, I mean. I don't question Ethilerah or this mission. It's a fantastic opportunity and I wouldn't miss it for all the world. I do share your concerns over Yona and Potato." That was their names, wasn't it? "Hopefully they will prove themselves to be assets to our team and to the warren, but most of my expectations are on you and Ginger Paw, and for good reason. You both are strong, trustworthy, faithful bucks." He was fairly sure they were, at least. They were comrades, brothers in arms, and he had little doubt that they would do their bests.

"It will be dangerous..." He trailed off for a moment, recalling the perilous journey to this new warren. Both Feather Ear and Ginger Paw were likely not to forget any time soon.

"There will be threats - both elil and otherwise. I may be leading this expedition, but if I don't survive, there must be someone else who can take my position. That and I truly need a second in command, regardless."

Aurrie Beaues

((Ahhh sorry it's so short I just wasn't REALLY sure what to write. XD ))

Feather was a touch shocked by where this conversation was heading. He was humbled and honored that Lark would think of him at all if that was indeed what he was doing. He was right of course there would be threats at all ends of this. Be it from within their own group, here was looking at the new members, or from without.

"Thank you sir." He said softly, it had been awhile since anyone else had praised him even in the smallest of fashion.

"Are you offering me this task sir?" He asked his voice soft with the thought.

"I honestly know of no better rabbit." He was being honest. Feather Ear and Ginger Paw had been with he and the travelling warren for ages and he knew them to be made of the right stuff. Of the two, though, only Feather Ear really showed the right stuff to be a leader. whether or not they would mesh well and get through this remained to be unseen, but he was optimistic by nature, like many rabbits. Or at least he did his best to be, anyway. It wouldn't be all that much longer and their new warren would be blossoming and successful - just like their old one had been once upon a time. They just had to get through this to help restore their warren to it's former glory.

"Do you accept the position as my second in command?" If Feather Ear did not want it, he would turn to Ginger Paw. If neither wanted it, he wasn't sure just what he would do. He didn't trust the two soft paws from the warren they had beaten in to submission and certainly would not be picking from among them, not until they had proved themselves to be loyal and trustworthy rabbits.
