Arian had been planning to head home after helping to set out his contribution to The Ark’s charity bake sale. The animal rescue home had been short on volunteers however and the dark-haired teen had somehow found himself roped into giving them a hand in helping to sell the baked goodies when he’d dropped off the two batches of cupcake minis (both chocolate and a more experimental apple sponge that he’d topped with a toffee and apple frosting and a piece of candied apple) and the batch of chocolate chip cookies that made up his offering and molasses spice cookies that his cousin had offered up. Which is how he’d found himself behind a table in the room that the rescue home used for their bake sales, with the cookies that he’d baked sandwiched between someone else’s lemon drizzle cake and his cousin’s cookies, half tempted to dig into his wallet and drop some money for one of Saffy’s cookies into the tin – his cousin’s molasses spice cookies were one of his favourites and having them in front of him was awfully tempting. The cupcakes that he’d baked had ended up a couple of tables further down with a few more cupcakes, the table manned by a brunette lady that he’d seen at the reception from time to time – Arian thought he remembered her telling him that her name was Amy once. baby_gwing Sorry it's taken me so long to start this

For as long as Hafwen herself could remember, she had always had nothing but fond memories whenever it came to charity bake sales. Not for the usual reasons such as being involved as one of the volunteers peddling the wares or an active contributor, especially not the latter unless people had stomachs made of steel that were capable of digesting the assortment of poisons her cooking had a tendency of unintentionally producing, but more so as a loyal food-loving customer stumbling on the occasional gems that could be found at such events.
At the end of the day, it always gave her a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that her money was going to a worthy cause in aiding these self-funded organizations in exchange for a couple of tasty treats. In fact, if one frequented these events long enough like she did, it was only a matter of time till one became as proficient as her when it came to picking out her favourite chocolate cupcakes just from the wrapping that they came in even before she saw the actual goodies with her own eyes.
"You're serious? You mean that the person who made these is right here giving you people a hand today?"
Looks like luck was on her side today. With less than 3 months to go till Mercy's birthday and still no bright ideas as to what she could get an 11 year old princess who was also akin to a younger sister to her, Hafwen was starting to find the idea of a personalized gift more and more plausible as the days passed. Perhaps she could sound this extremely talented person out for starters then see if she could get an order placed or something for the occasion.
Passing the fifth table down the row, she found herself at the cookies table just as Amy said she would, finding it manned by a dark-haired youth which to be honest surprised her a little since Amy did tell her that she would find one of their regular contributors Arian there. "Excuse me. Um... would you happen to know if Arian is around?" She asked tentatively, all the while oblivious to the fact that she was now conversing with said person. After all, she had no idea as to whether she should be expecting a male or a female for that matter.litian No worries. Always better late than never. ^^

In the end the temptation of the cookies had been too much for Arian to resist and the dark-haired teen had ended up dropping some coins that he’d managed to rummage up into the tin before snagging one of the biscuit. He’d been about to bite into it and wishing he had some tea to go with it when a girl with curly blue-hair wandered over. “I’m Arian” he said quietly as he set his newly purchased cookie down and to the side. “Is there anything I can help you with Miss?” Although his voice was not unfriendly he had fallen back on formal politeness, a little puzzled at being asked for by name especially as he was pretty sure that they’d not met before – at least he didn’t think they had.

Hafwen's eyes were on the cookie Arian had in his hand even before she asked for him, a hint of curiosity reflected in her gaze now when he informed her that he was the one whom she seeked. "Is that a new cookie flavour that you have there?" She hadn't seen that cookie before, that she was fairly certain for the appearance of the cookie was unfamiliar to herself.
With the reason behind her initial search for him momentarily forgotten in favour of learning more about the origin of the cookie she spotted in his hand, it only belatedly struck her that she might have come across to the male as being odd and incredibly rude by suddenly changing the subject without even offering a small introduction of herself first. So much for starting things off with a good first impression.
"I un.. my name's Hafwen." She began after some hesitation, taking a deep breath to psyche herself as she continued with the reason behind her looking him up in person. "I've always been an ardent fan of your cookies and I was wondering if you could help me bake a cake or batch of cupcakes for my bestie's coming birthday in April. I'll even pay you if you want."

Arian shook his head at the blue-haired girl’s question “Ah no – that’s not one of my batch” he said quietly. “My cousin baked those ones – they’re molasses spice cookies.” His voice turned rueful as he admitted “They’re one of my favourites though.” He gave the girl a friendly smile as she introduced herself “Nice to meet you Hafwen” a slight trace of embarrassment flitting across his face as she complimented his baking “And um thank you.” Being able to bake wasn’t something that Arian saw as that big a deal and his little baking hobby wasn’t something that he tended to broadcast. The embarrassment was followed by surprise as Hafwen followed the compliment by asking if he could bake something for her “I guess I could” he said at last “But I’m, just an amateur – wouldn’t you want someone professional to bake a cake for you? Especially since it's a present.”

"It's not that I haven't considered that really. I just thought that it'll be really really nice if I go for something homemade for once to surprise her, especially after knowing firsthand how your cookies and cupcakes have turned out." It was now Hafwen's turn to be embarrassed, one of her hands lightly scratching the back of her head as she gave Arian a small smile along with her reason for pursuing this course of action ultimately.
She could try her hand at baking something for that matter of course, but she really wasn't sure if she wanted to do that given her horrible track record whenever it came to cooking related activities. The last thing she wanted was to ruin Mercy's birthday by poisoning her, her family and friends with something she made after all.
Molasses spice cookies. Now that was certainly new and worth sampling. Reaching into her bag for her wallet, she managed to produce some coins for her effort, dropping them into the tin that had been set out before helping herself to one of said cookies. "Cousin... so the love of baking runs in the family?"

“That makes sense” Arian said quietly, and actually it did. He’d baked stuff for some of his friends and given it away to them under the reasoning that there was a ton of baked things around his cousin’s apartment anyway. “And I guess you could say that” he gave a rueful smile at Hafwen’s question. “Although it’s really more that we both have sweet teeth and baking your own stuff makes it easier to indulge.” He absently tugged at his braid as he thought over Hafwen’s request for a bit; it really wouldn’t be any trouble to whip some cupcakes for Hafwen given that both Saffy and himself baked pretty often. Mind made up, he added quietly “And I guess I could make a batch of cupcakes up for you if you really want, although you’d have to pay for the ingredients.” That was fair in his book; anything more would just make him feel uncomfortable. baby_gwing I am so sorry for how long this has taken, am finally slowly catching up

Hafwen munched on the molasses spice cookie as she listened to Arian speak, her head nodding a few times until she couldn't help interjecting with a compliment of her own. "This..." She quickly corrected herself, one hand already reaching to snag the entire bag for herself while the other dropped its monetary worth plus a tip into the tin for her purchase. "These are very good. You two should probably do this baking thing as a side job during vacation or something. You know, share the love around like what they usually say."
She offered thoughtfully, knowing beyond a doubt that there would be many others like her who would be more than willing to part with a portion of their allowances just to get their hands on some of the tasty confections if these were some of what both the dark-coloured hair youth and his cousin were capable of. "I'd appreciate that a lot and I'll certainly pay for the ingredients."

Nodding at Arian's agreeing to whip a batch of cupcakes up for her in celebration of Mercy's birthday, Hafwen smiled wide at the male as she tried to show her appreciation for his willingness to go through all the trouble for her sake with what she added on next. "Plus a tip for the trouble. I insist."

“I’ll let my cousin know that you liked her cookies” Arian said with a smile that turned slightly flustered at Hafwen’s mention of the pair of them baking as a side-job “And thank you, but baking’s not really that big a thing for me.” It certainly wasn’t something he wanted to do professionally. His rucksack was under the table and reaching down Arian rummaged in it until he found his notepad, flicking through some of the pages where he’d sketched out some of his past ideas for pieces of jewellery until he found a blank page about halfway through. After writing down his mobile number he tore the page out of the notepad and extended it to Hafwen. “Here’s my mobile number” probably self-evident since he’d written it down. “Was there any particular flavours that your friend likes, or things I should avoid?”

"You do that." It was a pity that Arian didn't share her sentiments about making his baking a more regular affair than one through which he could satisfy his sugar craving, but Hafwen supposed that it was really his choice at the end of the day and not one for her to pursue in the hope of getting him to reconsider. She could always stalk the charity bake sales as she always did for his cookies, and his cousin's too from now on, so it was no loss to her really.
"Really? I thought that most people will kill to have a job related to something that they really like." She mused, her tone neutral and unassuming as she meant for this to be a simple exchange of opinions and not her trying to coerce him into seeing things her way. "Thank you. I'll text you in a bit so you'll have mine as well."
Taking the slip of paper that was handed to her, she fished her phone out of the pocket, a thoughtful look on her face at his question as to Mercy's preferences that he should be mindful of. "Her name's Mercy and she's turning 12 this year. She's like a little princess really. Loves tea parties and unicorns." And that was about as helpful as she could be when it came to such things as she lifted a hand to scratch lightly on her cheek. "That um... wasn't terribly helpful, was it? I'm sure she'll love whatever you whip up eventually though since your cookies and cupcakes always turn out so delicious."

Actually following on from Hafwen’s logic – some form of job working with beads would probably be much more down Arian’s street, given the dark-haired teen’s interest in jewellery-making. Arian nodded at the blue-haired teen’s mention of texting him her details back, and then shook his head at her mention of not being helpful. “Ah no – that’s enough information for me to get started on. Maybe he could make cupcake flags for them to help decorated. Another thought occurred to him “Would you mind texting me the date when you need the cupcakes by when you text me the details” The best cupcakes were the ones freshly whipped up.

Hafwen nodded a few times, using the brief pauses between their conversation to quickly type up a brief message to thank Arian again for agreeing to this before adding the date of Mercy's birthday at the end upon his request. After cross checking his number with what was written on the slip of paper she had been handed earlier, she pressed the button to confirm the delivery of the text then replaced the phone in her own pocket.
"All done. You should receive my text anytime now unless the telco messed up the delivery." She wasn't really sure how the little she had just shared with regards to her bestie's interests was going to be of any help at all to the dark-haired youth, but she supposed she could let him know that she was available for further clarification if any was needed subsequently.
"I sure hope that it is. If you need any more information at all, please do not hesitate to text me or something. I'll respond as soon as I'm able to, if not immediately. This will be... cash on delivery. Right?"

Arian nodded “Oh definitely” he didn’t think he’d be able to feel comfortable taking money for something he hadn’t yet done. There was a little buzzing noise from his rucksack, and Arian absently reached for it and rummaged until he could find his mobile, giving the text from the unfamiliar number a quick glance before sliding both phone and notepad back into the rucksack. “Yep looks like your text’s come through” he made note to save the number into his phone when he got home later so he remembered who the number belonged to. “If there’s anything I think I’ve forgotten to ask then I’ll drop you a text. I can probably text you a picture of what they look like” he could do it once he'd finished decorating them. "So you can see the final product looks like before I drop them off."

"Please do. If you could also include the price for your trouble when you send the picture over, I'll be sure to have the money ready for you upon delivery." Hafwen waited patiently for Arian to check his phone, smiling politely at his confirmation that her text had indeed gone through. "I know that I'm repeating myself like a broken record here, but thank you so much for agreeing to this."
Mercy was so definitely in for a real treat. She knew that for a fact and couldn't wait to see what the dark-haired youth managed to whip up come the date of her bestie's birthday. She would have to save up quite a fair bit to reward Arian for his trouble, but she had a bit of a head start given that it was about 3 months away plus she was absolutely sure that every dollar that went into this would be so worth it.
"I guess I'll go check out what they have at the other tables then. Hope to see you around..." She tipped her head at him, giving him a small wave before heading off to check out the wares on display at the other tables, a slight bounce in her gait at her own good fortune in running into the young bespectacled male today.

“It’s totally fine” Arian said quietly, feeling a little embarrassed over all the thanks he was getting. Sure he didn’t really bake outside of the baking he did at home or for the monthly bake sale run but he truly didn’t see it as that big a deal. “And sure I’ll definitely see you around” for a start they’d be meeting again when he handed the cupcakes over.
It had been a pretty good day for sales on his table and Arian was sure that the bake sale organisers would be pretty happy with the amount of money in the tin. The dark-haired teen also knew that Saffy would be pretty chuffed when he told her about how popular her cookies had been with Hafwen.
In the meantime he’d could use the time in between sales to start planning what sort of cupcakes to bake. Mayhaps something with raspberry paired with handmade cupcake flags or chocolate – chocolate always tended to be popular. Either way he’d do his best so that when the time came Hafwen would have a pretty, but tasty set of treats to hand over to her friend.
