Asker yawned, tiny cub teeth showing has his mouth stretched wide. He was tired after a long day of romping about with his brothers and sisters, especially his little tussle with Chaska. It seemed as if the rest of his siblings were asleep already, but Asker couldn't make his eyes stay shut. There were just too many things going through his mind. During the day, he was a ball of energy, bouncing around the den and leaving destruction in his path. But once the day was over, Asker often found himself wondering about what it was like outside. He thought about his dreams for the future and what wonderful things he would get to do when he was older. The only problem was that he didn't actually know anything about any of it. He had always just assumed that everything matched up perfectly with his imagination. But now Asker was starting to seriously think about all of it. He wanted answers. It seemed as if his mind wouldn't let him rest until he got them. Mother would be able to give him his answers. After all, she knew everything. With new determination, Asker wriggled over-top of his slumbering littermates, careful not to wake any of them. Once he got close enough to his target, he spoke up softly. "Mama?" Asker whispered quietly, "Are you awake?" He flopped onto her front paws, green eyes blinking in the darkness.

Sleep. It was hard to come by these days. When the cubs were awake, Fireheart had to be. When they were sleeping, she had to go out to do her duties for the pride. And sometimes, like today, she got done a bit early. She gave Vodnitvar the all clear to swap places and, once he left, she curled up beside her cubs. Sea foam eyes fell shut and her breathing began to even out just as one little cub began to stir. Fireheart heard the whisper and sighed softly. "If I answer no, will you believe me?" she asked, not opening her eyes just yet to see how Asker would react. It would be silly to think that she was actually asleep still, but they were still young cubs. They were allowed to think silly things.

Asker pouted, his tiny head leaning against his mother's leg. That was a bummer. He had really hoped that his mother would have been awake. But she said she wasn't. The blue cub's ears swiveled backwards, pinning flat to his head in disappointment. He would have to wait until next morning to get his answers. How was he supposed to sleep now? Waiting until morning would take forever. Asker would probably be full grown by then. Wait a minute.... The cub busted out in quiet giggles. She had almost got him! "You can't talk when you're asleep!" Asker laughed, trying in vain to keep his voice down. It was rare to have either of his parents alone to himself. "You're silly, Mama." The blue cub wiggled in-between his mother's forelegs, trying to find the perfect cuddling spot. When he was finally situated, he stared up at Fireheart, attentive and alert. "Can I ask you some questions?" He asked innocently. He was going to ask them regardless, but Asker knew how important it was to practice manners. At least, he though he did. He wasn't entirely sure just what manners were, but Asker did know they had something to do with being nice.

Fireheart had to smile just a bit as she sensed Asker's disappointment. When he finally caught on, though, she opened her eyes to look down at the blue cub. She was always taken aback at how much he looked like his father. Indeed, they were almost carbon copies...save for the flaming orange fur on his head and tail. That he had her to thank for. "Of course, Asker," she said softly as she lifted her head, curling her paws around her middle child. She had had five cubs and this blue boy was the third to arrive. There was the saying that the middle cubs were always most ignored, but she was confident that Vodnitvar wouldn't let that happen, at least. Not to his near twin. "What would you like to know?"

Asker wriggled into his mother's fur as she moved her paws. It was almost as comfy as laying in the big pile with all of his siblings. He was glad his mother was up and awake. He didn't know what he would have done if she had been asleep. However, now that he had a chance to ask anything he wanted to, the blue cub was stumped as to what he wanted to ask first. He wanted to know everything, but Asker didn't think that would make a very good question. The blue cub frowned, trying to organize his thoughts. His brain kept jumping from subject to subject, seemingly unable to focus on a single thought. It always seemed to do that, even when he was tired. He shook his head a little, trying to get himself to settle down a little. Might as well start with the most basic thing and work his way up. Currently, the most basic thing seemed to be the outside world. Asker wanted to go out there so badly. He couldn't understand why they weren't allowed to leave the den. "What's it like outside?" He finally inquired, head tilting to the side. "And why can't we go out there yet?"

Fireheart waited patiently for Asker to come up with a question. She remembered what it was like being a cub, how frustrating it was that she couldn't do what she wanted when she wanted to do it. But she was also incredibly grateful to her mother for the manner in which she had been raised, finding it a fine way to do so. She smiled as Asker finally thought of a question to ask. All her cubs seemed to be curious about exploring, for which she was grateful. There were lazy cubs that had no interest in learning and, while her cubs were not all as rambunctious as she had been, they certainly weren't lazy. "Outside the den is many things," she said softly so as not to disturb her sleeping cubs. "It is fun, but can also be dangerous for little cubs. Your father and I wanted you to grow a bit so you could face those dangers a bit easier. Once you are all a bit bigger, you will be allowed to go out and roam."

Many things? That didn't help much, Asker thought with a pout. Plus they still weren't going to be able to go out and find these "many things" for a while yet. The cub wondered just how big he would have to be before being let outside. As big as Mama? As big as Papa? Asker didn't think it was possible to be as big as Papa. At least, not any time soon. If they all had to wait until they were that big to outside, Asker would probably die of boredom. Plus, he didn't think they would all be able to fit comfortably in the den at that size. But the mention of dangers caught Asker's attention. His green eyes grew wide at the idea of a world fraught with dangers. Were there evil shadow monsters? Demons that unfortunately resembled tail tufts? (Asker had pounced on plenty of his sibling's tails accidentally while hunting the creatures.) Criminals to be fought off? "What kind of dangers?" He asked in amazement. He was sure there were many other kind of monsters and villains that he didn't yet know about.

The large lioness chuckled as she watched Asker's eyes widen at the mention of danger. Yes, he was her son all right. When she was his age, she had been similarly interested and even obsessed with protecting her family from danger. "Many things, Asker. There are dangerous animals, nature can be very dangerous as well. You can even be a danger to yourself if you try to climb a rock that is too big or swim without someone else around. But don't be worried by that. Your father and I will give you all the tools an training you'll need to survive." Fireheart leaned down to nuzzle her blue boy, licking his little tuft out of habit. "And I saw that look in your eye. Don't worry your little head. You and your siblings will be allowed outside in just a few more days. You're growing physically and mentally very well."

Asker giggled a little bit and nuzzled his mother back. That was good to hear. A few more days didn't seem like too long, but it was hard for Asker to tell time. He would probably be back to complaining about his boredom and "imprisonment" as soon as he woke up the next morning. His mother's answer about danger seemed to make sense. He didn't really understand how climbing a rock was dangerous though. Asker did, after all, think he was rather invincible. How could something like a rock hurt him? He would just have to find one once they got out of the den and battle it into submission. It was the logical thing to do. Though he did like the idea of training. "What kind of training?" He asked, tail twitching a little with excitement. "Will we get to learn how to fight?" The blue cub punctuated his sentence by swiping out into the air, snarling a little at his imaginary enemy.

"All kinds," Fireheart said, feeling the little cub move around on her back. "And yes, fighting will be part of it. Also hunting, playing, swimming, meeting new lions, having good manners...there's lots to be trained in. But I promise all of it will be fun." Well, as long as Asker took after her.She had relished learning everything she could from anyone she could when she was younger, whether it was how to pounce or how to act like a Gypsy Lady should. "You're very full of questions today," she added, reaching up to tug the little cub down between her paws. "Perhaps your Gypsy name should be Riddler," she teased, leaning down to lick the fiery tuft of fur on top of his head. "All these questions in your mind...but they're very good ones. A curious cub grows into a strong, smart adult, you know." The Captain Britain Sorry for the delay, had a family emergency.

SilverLutz No worries. I myself just started to have working internet again. emotion_zombie Asker could cheer. He was going to get to learn how to fight! And meet new people! And play some more! And, well, he didn't really understand what manners were, but he hoped they had something to do with fighting. It was probably some advanced combat technique that only the coolest and most awesome lions could learn. He was going to have the best manners ever! The blue cub froze at the phrase of "gypsy name." He already had a name. It was Asker. How could he have two names? Wouldn't that be confusing? He cringed as his mother's tongue pulled at the tuft on his head. Frowning, Asker reach up with his paws to smooth it back down. Always with the grooming. He was a big boy! "What's a gypsy name?" He asked after fixing his tiny excuse for a mane. "Don't I already have a name?" Asker wondered if it was possible to change his name to something he wanted, or maybe it was another name his parents would give him.

Fireheart smiled slightly as Asker's face twisted into one of confusion. Ah, the cubs still had so much to learn. She knew they'd grow up fast, though, and she wanted to enjoy these moments when they were still so small and innocent. "You do have a name. A very nice name at that," she said with a nod. "But that is your true name. Asker is what you will be called by your brothers and sisters, by your father and myself, by any close friends or future mate you may take. It is for those who are closest to you to know, and that is all. Your gypsy name will be given to new friends, strangers, rouges, or if you travel to anyone you may meet. And, you get to pick your own gypsy name," she said with a little grin. That was always the exciting part for the young ones. "For instance...you know me as mother or mom, and your father as dad, but I call him Vodnitvar and he calls me Ugomvi when we are alone. Those in the pride will call him Straw Dog and will call me Fireheart. Does that make sense?"

Asker preened a little at the compliment of his name. Of course, he knew that his mother would like his name, seeing as she and his father has chosen it. Still, Asker did like compliments. However, his smug smile died down as his mother continued explaining, replaced by a fierce look of concentration as the cub tried to process the information being explained. His true name was his current name. Mama and Papa had one too. That was simple enough. He would continue calling Chaska "Chaska," and Hana "Hana," and so on. But the gypsy name...was like a nickname? That strangers would call him. Meaning his true name was kind of like a secret! Asker liked secrets. They were fun to keep, and even more fun when they were shared with others who were in on it. So his name, as well as his siblings names, would be like one big family secret. Any really good friends he made once they were finally able to leave the den would know too! The blue cub tried not to think about the idea of a "mate" though. Yuck! He would never want to date a girl. Vanellope and Hana were alright, but then again, they were his sisters. That automatically made them cootie-less. Nope. Asker would never never to something as icky as having a mate. But those thoughts were chased away by another, more tantalizing one. He would be able to choose his own gypsy name! He could be called whatever he wanted. The possibilities were endless! So endless, in fact, that they were even a little daunting. How was he supposed to choose his own name? "I think so. But how do I choose? How did you choose yours?" The cub asked, head titling a little to the side.

How did you choose. Fireheart had to smile very slightly. Chaska had asked her the exact same thing. "Well...there's no defined way to do it. You'll find that lots of lions have very different gypsy names. Sometimes they're named after something like...magpies or mountains. I picked my name when I was a little older than you. I had a very hot head when I was little and would get very protective of my family. So protective and riled up that it felt like my chest was on fire. Now I know that's passion, but when I was little I was sure my heart was on fire. So, Fireheart." She leaned down to nudge her nose against Asker's cheek. "But don't feel rushed into picking a name. It'll be with you your whole life, so make sure it's something you'll like. Something that defines you, sets you apart from the other lions." The Captain Britain One more after this one from me!

SilverLutz Awesome. Last from me then. Thanks, this was great! It's setting me up for some nice character development in the future. whee Fire. The word spoke to him, a connection deep and confusing that made him feel a little uncomfortable. Asker had felt that way before, so energetic and excited that everything seemed to burn with energy. It usually happened when he was fighting with Chaska or one of his other siblings. But it wasn't really fire, was it? Mama had said that it wasn't, instead something called "passion." So that meant passion was...feeling like fire for something? That was mind-boggling. However, it did seem to make the whole "gypsy-name" business make more sense. Asker guessed that this gypsy name was supposed to be something you felt, not just something you liked. Like Vanellope, who always seemed happy and sweet all the time. Her name would be something like that. But then what did Asker feel a lot? He liked how he felt when he was fighting, strong and brave, but then again he also felt the fire-feeling that Mama had mentioned. Did that mean he had to choose only one feeling? Or maybe combine them? Or maybe do something different? Asker's flame orange tuft flopped about as he shook his head again. All this thinking was really starting to wear him out. It was a good thing he had a long time to figure out his name. It seemed like it was going to take a long time to sort out and choose! "Okay. I won't rush, Mama. Promise." The cub yawned, snuggling against his mother. His green eyes slowly drooped closed, finally tired from the long day. A good bedtime story would probably put him to sleep. Asker liked those. They gave him good dreams. "Mama, can you tell me about the ocean again?" He asked, covering his nose with his paws as he settled down to sleep.
