The King’s Warrior Maid

Prologue
The kingdom of Gavalona was a stark land of mountains and cliffs with its capitol, Concora, a brightly colored city of wonders at its center. Gavalona’s king, King Leodon, had a large sparkling white castle that could be seen from anywhere in Concora. It was in the throne room of this magnificent palace that a man was planning the death of the great king.

“Council man Orso, have we heard any news about the attack on the western border?” asked the wise and worried king.

Orso rose from his seat along the side of the large mahogany table that seated the other eight council men and said, “No, Your Highness the prince has sent us no new word.”
“Ah, I see…..” said the king and he stroked his beard in worry.

“Your Highness would you like me to refill your glass?” asked a tall woman with long red hair.

“What? Oh, uh, yes. Thank-you Maria.” replied the worried king.

Maria walked towards the old oak table that held a silver pitcher of wine and retraced her steps back up to the throne. “He will return, don’t lose hope.” whispered Maria as she refilled King Leodon’s glass.

“My dear Zephina……”he whispered his voice filled with love, “thank-you.” He finished loudly.

“Of course your Highness.” she replied as she bowed and backed up to her place hidden in the shadows of the throne. She closed her eyes and extended her senses out and focused. She blocked out the sound of the arguing council and listened to the guards talking outside when she heard a bowstring being pulled.

Her eyes snapped open. In one fluid motion long sapphire claws shot out of the tips of her fingers and unlatched daggers hidden on both forearms and let them slide into her hands while she quickly retracted the claws before dashing out of her place behind the throne. She slashed an arrow out of the air that was headed for the King’s heart while throwing the other dagger right into the heart of the assailant up in the balcony.

Royal guards swarmed around the king in a protective circle while the council men exclaimed in fear. Maria/Zephina said to the guards, “Stay here, and protect the king.” The guards gave a small nod of understanding before she ran up the stairs to the balcony. She did a quick look around to see if there was another with the now dead archer and found nothing.

“We’re all clear.” She yelled. The guards below visibly relaxed and one came up and joined her.

“Have you taken a look at him yet?” asked the guard as he looked at the body.

“Not yet, you can if you want to Amon.” She replied as she removed her dagger from the body and headed back down stairs. As she headed towards the shaking king, she felt the eyes of the council men on her, some with hatred, and others with lust. The girl ignored all of them and continued onward. An old maid intercepted her before she could reach the throne and said with exasperation, “Hand it over.” The girl chuckled and handed her the bloody dagger. The old maid pulled out a towel and wrapped the dagger in it saying, “You will get this back later.”

The girl laughed and said, “I know Marina.” She then proceeded to out a kind hand on the woman’s shoulder before continuing towards the king. When she reached the thrown she bowed low, “Your Highness” she said with reverence.

The king put a shaking hand on her shoulder and said, “My dear Zephina,” he took a shaky breath, “thank-you.” She rose and went to stand at the side of the throne at the king’s beckoning. She stood beside the throne and looked at the king. “Zephina Maria Sekoola,” he said with pride. The council men exclaimed in bursts of, “Impossible!” “That monster!” and “Unbelievable!” Leodon rolled his eyes and hushed them with a wave of his hand and with a small chuckle said, “I wish you put your hatred of my son behind you.” He chuckled again, “For it would be nice to be able to call you my daughter.”

Zephina sighed in annoyance, “You know I can’t.” she paused, “Can we just finish this?”

The king sighed and motioned for Marina to come forward. The old woman moved directly in front of the throne and faced the council men. She closed her eyes. When she opened them they were a milky white. The council men’s eyes widened with fear, but within seconds their eyes looked exactly like Marina’s. The old maid closed her eyes only then and said, “It is done, they remember nothing.”

I totally thought she was the king's secret lover at first, lol Oh and he says her hatred of his son, so does that mean his son is her brother? If so then I don't get why she would not acknowledge her father because of her brother. Was that supposed to be granddaughter right there or is that something that is being left unexplained for now? Also the formatting throws me off a little. I think it might be easier to read if you align it to the left. If you're worried about being able to tell where the new line starts each time just leave a blank line in between. It may seem like you're wasting space but it is a heck of a lot easier to read.

Dunno if that explanation was any good so uh... like this is what I mean for the formatting.

Yeah it starts off a bit confusing but it will make a bit more sense when I finish the first chapter, and thanks for the formatting idea I diffidently think that will work better.

It's interesting. Although you might want to flesh it out a bit more. It's hard to tell where exactly but it seems like you are telling and not showing.

Chapter 1

Zephina Maria Sekoola, or Maria Zephina, was a hybrid. Half human, half dragon, and none but a select few knew for safety reasons. Hybrids were hated, even more than their dragon parents. For eons dragon and man were at war, a war that had ended 21 years ago when a treaty was formed to stop the loss of life, a treaty that resulted in the birth of Zephina.

Every hybrid was unique, all had at least one scale and had an ability of some kind, but that was all they shared. Zephina was an odd one though, even by hybrid standards. She had a single silver scale under her right eye, the scales became more plentiful the farther you went down her body and they would gradually become sapphire, yet the normal person would see none of this as she was gifted with the ability of illusion, which also helped to hide the many daggers she carried with her. Zephina had heightened senses and was slightly stronger than the average human; combine this with the fact that she had a natural talent for weaponry and you had the perfect warrior. The perfect secret warrior, and by far the king's greatest asset.
*****************************************************************************************

Up in the king's chambers King Leodon and his wife, Queen Regara, were eating their lunch when a servant ran into the great room saying, "The prince has returned and he brings great news!" The couple looked at each other in disbelief before dashing out of the room with a trail of maids in tow.

Zephina raced ahead and stopped them with a glare by saying, "Your Highness the prince is in the throne room waiting." Realizing they had overshot their destination and left their guard behind they stopped, turned around, and walked back towards the throne room.
To be continued....
