Maslin stared up at the sky with disdain. Above him a Ysali dragon circled and taunted him with a roar that sounded far too much like a cackling laugh for his liking. The bright green dragon was smaller than normal for a Ysali and likely quite young, perhaps why it seemed content just to mock Maslin and Lazuli rather than attack them. It effortlessly dodged the elemental magic thrown it's way and even the one rock Maslin had hurled out of frustration. It seemed that no matter what he could not succeed in killing these beasts, suffering defeat after humiliating defeat where he was poisoned, tripped by vines or outnumbered and forced to run away.
He had tried pointing this out to his mother as proof that he was not cut out for this and that he should be allowed to stop now. She had insisted that until he proved himself to her specification he was not done. There had been no malice in her voice just a firm tone brooking no arguments. Maslin had not yet achieved the minimum requirements for maturity that his family expected of him and that meant slogging out into the wild and continuing to hunt dragons even if all he gained was experience on how to do so better.
~ Lazuli hissed and beat his small wings against his pale blue body. The Keindred would fly up and bite the Ysali dragon on the nose if he could. Did this creature know how much distress it was causing his bonded? It was not that the little peisio drakein wanted to kill but souls were needed and there were so many dragons, so so many of them but only one Maslin for Lazuli to adore. ~
Once the young dragon grew bored of circling it's pathetic attackers it gave one last laugh before flying off. Today the little ysali was victorious, it lived on unharmed and with it;s soul firmly anchored to it's body.
