She was feeling -- how else to say it, but -- well, cocky. It was just one of those days where it felt like the day was crafted just for her to enjoy. Li didn't usually let herself get so caught up in the moment of things, but the tourney had riled her and made her blood a little hotter than it should have been. It was why she signed up for the pre-finals warm ups, in part to redeem herself and in part to dole out a little pain. Everyone had their moments of bad judgment that would make most logic-minded people shake their heads, and this was hers.
Li was still sore from her last bought, her bruises concealed beneath dark garments, but it wasn't going to stop her; being on the receiving end of a beating rarely did, which was probably a good and very bad thing when it came to the fighter's sense of self. Taking her turn when her name was called, she leaped over the edge of the small arena set up for them and eagerly began a sideways jog with the anticipation of clashing. If it was a drug, the girl was addicted, and in a sore need of a fix. When the challenge started, she didn't mind approaching with wild abandon this time, all caught up in the 'fun' of it and how good it felt to be on the move at all.

Aiko wasn’t late this time. After the humiliating way she’d been beaten in the quarter-finals, she’d worked up the resolve to prove herself one last time before she’d join the audience and watch those who’d beaten her beat each other up.
There was always something to prove, with her, especially considering the fact that she measured barely five feet in height. The fighter had always been underestimated and dismissed ever since she was a child. Most, to this day, were hardly aware of the fact that she could fight. After all, it was easy to hide her ki-molding abilities under her cute pixie cut and tiny frame.
She flashed her opponent a good-natured smile when she saw her. The young woman also seemed to have some hidden drive, if the way she charged now was any indication. Focusing the ki to her feet, Aiko hopped high –impossibly high without the aid of ki—and swung a thin leg downward in a kick as she descended on her opponent.

Li belatedly registered that her opponent was a cute girl, earning a brief flash of appraisal in her dark eyes before she suddenly wasn't there anymore. The pale-haired woman barely had time to look up before she immediately fell into the splits, unable to avoid the entire brunt of the attack but trying to defend against it the best she can, arms raised up in an 'x' shape with her body almost as low as she could go. The arrogance she'd carried just moments before was splintered with her surprise; that girl could pack heat, and Li was beyond impressed. It also made her realize how much in error she was to treat this as a game. She'd slipped, and now she was going to pay for it.
Her arms felt jarred against the block, feeling the bones in her forearms sing with pain that promised her shoulder would have been dislocated had that hit landed. Li tried to raise up against the lithe leg, twisting her wrists to aim for her ankle so she couldn't perform another vanishing trick. It was her intent to try and throw her off balance, give her little room to focus her ki, but Li herself had already been set off guard. The girl was fast, so much faster than she, and even if Li knew she was going to be fighting just to stay upright - winning was entirely off the table - she didn't want to just bow out without effort given.

That look of surprise in her opponents’ eyes, the one they always got when she made the first hit, was worth it. Thin lips curling into another smile, Aiko was about to send her other leg swinging down when her opponent pushed her slight frame back and left her tumbling in midair.
“Waah— ”She landed on her hands instead, flipping easily backwards and onto her feet. For all of her magic abilities, she couldn’t change the fact that she weighed barely over a hundred pounds, and that it only took one good hit to take her down. Even the sudden force on her ankle stung more than it should have. “You’re pretty good,” she admitted, rubbing the back of her head with one small hand.
But this wasn’t the time for idle talk, and Aiko lightly hopped forward again. She feinted with her right fist this time, quickly following with her other charged fist. She wasn’t left-handed, either—it just didn’t make a difference with the ki.

The way her opponent caught herself was impressive; coming from a tall Lunarian who prided herself on her own somewhat-acrobatic ability, it was saying a lot. Aiko's backward gesture allowed Li to get back to her feet, resting her weight into her heels, one arm up on the defensive (like she'd have time for an offense!), the other behind her body to prepare to move or throw her weight as she'd need to. She was at a severe disadvantage and she knew it; it didn't make it any less exciting for her, however.
"You're very good" she responded with a brief upward lift of her lips. Li knew when she was out-matched, and this girl - small, yes, but that hardly mattered - knew more and was more in control of her abilities than Li was of her own. It was almost like fighting a Captain as a Student! But she had no time to consider their differences, as the bundle of energy and speed was coming at her again.
Li had prepared to block the punch, but the left hand more than caught her off guard -- again. She herself was left-handed but she'd not yet come across someone like that or, as this one seemed to be, ambidextrous. The hit landed below her breast, making her scar sing with protest and her ribs shriek with the shock of the force of the ki. Li doubled over around the fist in the pain, but used the movement to seize Aiko by her elbow and swing her around -- and away. Letting the girl close to her was damaging!
Unfortunately, with her lack of bearings, it was more like she was trying to throw Aiko upwards, and from the kick that had her arms still aching, that probably wasn't the smartest thing she could have done.

“Aw, shucks,” she’d had the breath to say before she began the assault. Aiko did enjoy it when her opponents weren’t spitting insults at her, and it appeared she had the good fortune this time to meet with another honorable challenger. Perhaps she’d get to go out to tea with this one, too!
Aiko knew the punch hurt. The woman had been a bit confused at Li’s attempt to shake her, but regained her balance with a one-footed hop. She even felt a little bad about swinging around with her right fist to add another punch, but that was the price of entering such a tournament. There always had to be a winner.
When the ref signaled the end of the match, Aiko held one hand out to the pale-haired girl. “Up with ya,” she said, a genuine smile spreading across her face as if they hadn’t been trying to beat each other up just seconds prior, “That was a good match. I’m Aiko!”

She was good -- too good, and Li could do little more than catch each punch with her already bruised body. The strength of it knocked her down, and before she could concede, the match was over; she'd lost and been knocked down a few pegs. It was a healthy reminder of her situation as a Legionnaire in a war-torn country; she hadn't wanted it, but she'd needed it.
With a brief grin, Li took the offered hand and got back up a little slowly, rubbing her ribs. "My thanks," she responded, bowing even with their hands held in help and greeting. Aiko deserved as much. "It was a quick match," Li laughed a little, not too embarrassed, but still acknowledging her limits and flaws in battle, "but it was intense. My favorite type." Offering the girl a smile, she adopted the same attitude as her opponent, straightening her posture as she let Aiko go. "I am Li -- and I sincerely hope to see you again on the streets, Aiko." She paused. "Just not across a sparring mat. I learned that lesson!"
She was sincerely content, ushering the smaller Lunarian from the mat so the last challenges could begin. It would be nice, she thought, to see Aiko not as an opponent anymore, but perhaps a friend in these friendless times.
