"Oh what a pretty song you sing. Do you sing it for me?"
The words slipped past ivory lips as the mare stared up at a rather unremarkable bird that was chirping away. Whom was it calling to? A loved one, a stranger? Or was it for her? A smile pulled at her mouth as she watched the feathery little thing hop along the branch of the bare tree, singing away. As the bird hopped along from branch to branch, the mare followed, her hooves softly crushing the snow beneath them. She was sure to stay as quiet as possible since she never knew who may be near by, but it had been months, maybe even longer, since she had last seen Persephonix.

Persephonix, her tormentor, her own brother. She thought of him sadly. She was sure if he had taken the time to know her he would have never hated her, never have hurt her. But then again, he knew who she was when they first met, and he had drawn her in with his charming personality. Maybe it was she who was the fool, for believing a stranger. Then again, strangers had never been good to her. Those she had come in contact with often came into contact with Persephonix, and though she had begged for them to not make mention of her, he always found her. Strangers were no good to her.

"Am I supposed to be lonely, little bird?" She cooed, her hard colored eyes softer than the plush snow she walked on. "No one to walk with, no one to talk to. Is this all life has to offer?" The words were a mere whisper. Maybe it was her fault, expecting others to help her because she was in need. Maybe her expectations were too high? Maybe she should go out of her way to help a stranger, than just to expect them to help her?

Vapor didn't fly much these days. The damage to his wings from recent scuffles made it unpleasant to fight the winter wind. Wind caused him to lose balance when it pushed through the holes in his wings. As such, he kept to the grounds. The snow did little more than piss him off. It had caused critters to hibernate, making finding a dead meal to feast on quite a challenge. Flying south would be smart, but he was no bird, and would never make the flight with the shape his wings were in. Did soquili even fly south for the winter? No. They had cozy little homes no doubt. He scoffed.

Trudging through the shallow snow, he saw a blur of blue in the distance. At first he hadn't noticed it. Everything seemed to blend in with the bare trees and the snow. Blue and white. No wonder they had blended in so well. Vapor stopped in his tracks and crouched down with a predatory instinct. Watching as they moved, he tried to figure out what, or who they were. They were no kalona or skinwalker. Their movements were too delicate, feminine... At this realization that it was likely a mare, his head sunk down, shadowing a most evil gaze in the direction they were. Mares made for easy game. It made him feel better to bully them. Bullying males was always a risk of provoking fight. Not that it stopped him, it just meant that he didn't fully let go.

Vapor waited to see if he had been noticed. She seemed preoccupied with something in the trees, and was moving about. He pushed a lip up discontentedly. Well, if they wouldn't notice him, then he would make them notice.

Standing up from his crouch, he began to make his way towards the figure. As he drew closer, he confirmed that it was indeed a mare. Oh happy day. He smiled as he closed the gap between them, in a most devilish way.

Merciette's first clue something was off was when her little bird stopped singing.

Then, it flew away all together.

"Wait, don't leave--" Her delicate voice was pained, hurt by the betrayal of her feathered friend. Was her company really a bother? Her ears flattened against her head in dismay. With the bird gone it had gotten eerily quiet, which let her hear the crunch crunch of snow under hooves.

Immediately she turned to see a most terrifying sight. Icy eyes grew wide as they took in the appearance of the stallion approaching her. He was bright blue, and she could see purple and aqua and a most curious yellow she had never seen in the mountains. Though the colors were entrapping, it was the golden ram horns, the shape of his wings, and the size of the brute that alerted her to flight mode. A Kalona. Just like Mercy, just like her brother Persephonix.

Even though she wanted to run, she couldn't feel her hooves. She let out a loud, shaky gasp into the cool winter air. Was this where it ended? Lonely in the cold? It was fitting, right? She flattened her ears against her skull, and the frail mare clenched her eyes shut. She swallowed hard. Even if she could run, surely he could outrun her. Those wings, those hooves...

Was it pathetic to plea? Merciette opened her mouth to start, but found no words to save her life.

Vapor watched as the small bird took flight. The mare seemed almost hurt by it's accent into the sky. An added bonus, if that brought her sadness, but it wasn't enough. He lit up like the morning sky as she finally heard him coming.

How deliciously delightful! The mare turned around and was instantly fear struck by Vapor's approach. This caused him to give a devilish grin. Would she shake and cower rather than stand up to him? She looked like she might flit away like that small bird at any moment. For now, she appeared unable to move.

Vapor was budding with energy. If he knew happiness, it was in moments like these. When playing the game of cat and mouse, played out so easily. IF he knew happiness.. As he closed off the remaining distance, and her chance to escape, he thought he might burst. The way a predator felt when it's prey was almost in mouth. Not that he would know what that actually felt like. He couldn't kill. Maybe that's why he took such great pleasure in terrorizing others. It was as close to that feeling as he could get.

Standing now in front of the frail lake blue and ice mare, still with her eyes closed, he growled at her. Look at me....fear me. he thought with a swelling ego. He stretched out his wings, making sure to appear as large and menacing as possible.
