User ImageAbby strolled slowly down the street, frowning to herself and muttering under her breath about how the city had to be deliberately switching around and making her lost. She'd been looking for Royce's home for well over twenty minutes!

Her wings were constantly flaring and refolding on her back as the urge to take to the sky repeatedly reared up. It was what she normally did if she got lost, after all, but all those other times the word "lost" meant she'd been roaming around a forest and decided she wanted to visit a town, but couldn't remember which road it was cause she'd spotted something interesting and had run off in pursuit. In a town, flight would be useless cause she didn't know where Royce lived, and the print on those signs was really small and hard to read from above.

Also hindering her flight were two bags she wore around her neck like clunky and awkward necklaces. One was a plastic bag from a store; through the transparent film one could see a few full packaging of something in white paper and several little square packets in bright yellow, as well as a couple bottles that appeared to be spices from the label style. The other bag was far more of a mystery, made of canvas with several blotches of color that could have either been a deliberate design, or accidental staining. The thing managed to bulge without appearing to be full.

Abby suddenly sighed in frustration and plunked down in the middle of the sidewalk, muttering even more rapidly though the paranoid rant was apparently audible enough; a couple walking down the sidewalk spotted her, halted, then quickly walked to the other side of the road before continuing on!

"This shouldn't be so hard," she said under her breath, speaking to the air. "I mean he pointed out where the building was supposed to be! Why the heck are there so many apartments in this place? They do it to deliberately confuse others, I know it! That way no one can ever find the bakers unless they're in their shops. It'll all a plot. I should probably rescue Royce before the town consumes him too!"

Had she been left alone long enough she probably would have continued on in a similar vein for some time; thankfully a sound broke into her concentration and made her look up. Right across the street from her was a tall building, and some dude was pushing buttons on a little box that made a loud sound and was talking into the box, which then made a louder sound and the man went into the building. Abby stared for a minute, then looked around. Yup, this should be about the right spot...

She crossed the street and examined the box. There was a button labeled C12. Not caring if she had the right place or not, Abby jammed the button down and brought her mouth close to the box. "Royce? You in there! You better tell me where you're hiding him, or I'm tearing this city down!"

Royce had spent most of the morning cleaning. When noon came around, he switched to grabbing out the tools they'd need. Thankfully Mr. Bell's brother had left early and was intending to stay late. There would be no need of awkward introductions or explaining of messes. Jonah wasn't a bad character, but he was gruff and he wasn't sure how he'd take coming home to a flour explosion. Royce hoped him and Abby wouldn't make too big of a mess, but one never knows.

Finally Royce felt ready for the lesson to start. The only thing missing was his student. His brow furrowed as he glanced at the clock. It was getting kind of late. Perhaps she had gotten lost or was being denied at the door. Royce had to go fetch Abby, he could feel it. However just as he was about to head out, his intercom buzzed.

Royce pressed the button to receive the call in time to hear a familiar voice screaming through the intercom. "Woah." Royce said, jerking his head back from the static shouting. "Abby? Calm down. There's no need to tear down the city." He was a bit concerned about his friend's train of thought, but shook his head with a faint smile and chuckle. Pressing the door release button, Royce quickly turned back to the intercom. "Come on up. Take the elevator, located across the lobby, to the third floor. Take a left and I'm the third door on your right."

The heavy door barring any unwanted entry into the apartment complex discharged its lock with a resounding thunk and waited to be opened.

[[ Honestly the numbering system probably doesn't actually make sense, but it was a fun random number. xD ]]

Abby was at the point where she was going to start beating at the door next when Royce's voice came through the little box. She calmed down just a bit, but by no means was she convinced yet; this could all be an elaborate hoax to distract her from finding Royce, a thought that nearly had her give the machine a mocking laugh while she ran off in the opposite direction, but, well, to be perfectly honest this was the only lead she had, so she might as well go with it.

The door made a very loud and official sound. She gave it an experimental tug, and it pulled open. She squeezed in the room, letting it slam shut behind her, and looked around for an elevator while her eyes adjusted to the gloom. What the heck was an elevator, anyway? Maybe she should have asked the Royce-voice in the box, but she'd been in a hurry. And what the heck was with all the threes in this place? Sure, it totally made sense when you factored the C in, but what kind of twisted logic did this building run under that put a twelve into play, huh?!

When she finally did find what was most likely the elavator, she had to spend a few moments trying to figure out how she was supposed to get inside. She finally did, though accidently; she just wanted to see what pushing that button would do, who knew that was how you opened the doors! Since she had the concept of buttons in mind it was a little easier to figure out how to get to the third floor, but as soon as that giant metal box started moving to clung to the rails and didn't relax her stance until the doors open. She literally dove off the elavator, taking a moment to lie face-first on the floor and appreciate how solid it felt. Then she got up and began her search for the right door.

Abby followed the instructions she remembered getting from the Royce-voice and stared at the door. What if this was a trap, ready to be sprung? She knocked cautiously on the door, preparing herself for all possible surprises such odd minds could spring on her.

iMoony
lol It certainly fueled her paranoia that apartment buildings are purposely this way to hide people!

Royce hoped his instructions were easy enough. He knew that the numbering system in this building was odd. Still, so long as Abby was able to retain his words, she would be fine. Worst case a neighbor would find her wandering the halls and they would guide her to Royce. Most of the tenants knew him now because of his pleasant, if a bit distant, attitude. Abby would find her way.

The knock on the door was hesitant, but still caused Royce to jump. He moved quickly from the spot he had paced nervously to. The door was swung wide and so was his welcoming grin. "Welcome!" He took a quick look at the fox before him to confirm it was Abby before ushering her in. "Come on in."

Royce was a bundle of nervous energy so it took him a moment to notice Abby's stance. "Are you... okay?" Had she changed her mind about coming? She had sounded rather frazzled across the intercom. "We don't have to do this if you don't want to. I'd hate to make you feel uncomfortable." Royce wasn't aware of how those statements could be perceived by outside ears, but he probably wouldn't care. He was more concerned about how unhappy his friend appeared to be.

"The people who build these towns are all in some kind of plot over bakers," was Abby's greeting, brows furrowed into a serious expression as she quickly crossed over the threshold. Didn't want to be overheard! "They designed the layout to be as confusing as possible. This may just be a protective measure so if there's a riot those greedy sneaks will have a continous supply of fresh goods, but just to be safe I'm gonna set up surveillance so I know whether a rescue extraction is needed or not!"

You had to hand it to the colorful female. A "hello" would have been so much simpler and easy to deal with, but at least her greetings were almost never dull! Just....insane.

She did seem to relax a little once in the apartment. Of course it could be filled with all sorts of hidden traps, now that she had an idea of how twisted the town could be when it came to baker residences, but at least Royce was here with her and the place had a wonderful smell to it. Like the bakery, but interlaced with actual food smells and other pleasant things. "Anyway, got the stuff. Turns out I am allowed in the store, as long as I put my complaints into writing and don't bother any more of the workers," Abby said, ducking her head and pulling off the bags. Her neck throbbed in relief as the weight vanished.

Royce was taken aback by Abby's words. He slowly shut the door behind her, barely understanding what she was saying. Abby was taking paranoid to a new level. With their friendship still only a bud, Royce was not sure how far she'd actually take her plans. His roommate could probably take a lot of things, but definitely not being surveillanced. Royce decided he should attempt to calm her down... later. If she brought the topic up again, he'd correct her misunderstandings.

He smiled as Abby eased into the apartment. Royce took the bags from her and took it into the kitchen, indicating that she should follow him. He carefully placed the bags on the counter, emptying their contents, while talking. "Good to hear. You have every right to complain," Royce said with a shrug. "I'm sure it just makes it easier for them to keep track of complaints if they were in writing."

"Are these what you want to try as extra ingredients?" Royce asked staring at the stained bag. "You should probably unpack that one. Maybe also tell me what the items are and what they taste like... If you've tried them before. That way we can brain storm baking ideas."

"Right," Abby said brightly, walking over and beginning to rummage around in the bag. The first thing she pulled up was a somewhat squashed bunch of bananas.

"There was some guy at the store who makes food for people who don't wanna cook for themselves, though I didn't see him making anything," she started to explain, setting down the bananas and bringing out a jar of peanut butter. "There was a bunch of bread there, but none of it was fresh. So I kept bringing stuff up to him and asking him what was in it,-" a coconut joined the pile, "-and he said if I quit messing up the display he'd make me a list of the breads they had and stuff that went in them. Real slow about it, he was-, now there was also fresh corn, raisins, and a can of red bean paste, "-but finally got it to me. I had to pick what sounded interesting cause there was too much for me to carry in addition to the staples!"

Abby finally finished unloading the bag onto the table. Aside from the bananas, coconut, corn, raisins, and bean paste, there was also an assortment of nuts, both in store bags and in small cloth bags that Abby had obviously found foraging and brought for the occasion. There was also an assortment of dried berries and fresh, also from both store and of Abby's finding, most of them the latter and dried. There was also a wheel of something soft that might have been cheese, but it was hard to tell without removing the wrapping.

iMoony
Thankfully that's about as paranoid as she gets ;^^
PostPosted: Thu Feb 07, 2013 10:08 pm

Royce listened and watched as Abby related her tale. A lot of the items she placed on the table Royce knew, of course. Despite Abby's apparent attempt at research, Royce was confused by the range of ingrediants that she had picked. There were pieces for at least five different bakery items. Perhaps certain combinations could be made to narrow it down to four or three, but definitely no less than that.

He chuckled as Abby finished. "I'm sorry, but... What staples?" Royce glanced at the table and saw nothing of the sort. However, his eyes did begin to analyze the ingrediants better.

He stared at the coconut and thought. He had never had to open a whole coconut before. Royce wasn't even sure it was possible without dropping it from a substantial height. (That might be cartoons speaking.) Did Abby? Otherwise that might have to go off the table.

Looking a bit perplexed, Royce turned to the assortment of nuts and berries. Easy enough to toss into a mixture for extra flavour. He could even name a few already, even from the foraged bunch, though others did not look familiar.

Finally he analyzed the mysterious wrapped wheel. Cheese often came like that, but he wasn't exactly sure. "Is that... cheese? What kind?" Royce asked. He wanted to get the identification of the item out of the way as quickly as possible.

"As far as everything else... Do you know where you might want to start?" He glanced at the bananas, deciding they'd go bad quicker than everything else. "Banana bread, perhaps?"

"The staples are in the bag you took from me," she laughed, going over to the bag that was clearly from the grocery store and not her personal (and very ragged) gathering bag. And indeed, as she began emptying that one out it revealed itself to hold things like sugar, yeast, and a couple varieties of flour. "Of course when I say staples I don't mean those little metal bits. That would ruin the texture and add nothing to the taste!"

Finally, from the very bottom she removed a couple very squished bags of sugar; powdered, brown, and cane. "I didn't know if there was a difference in the sugars or flours, so I bought one of everything there seemed to be the most of on the shelves," she admitted, setting the sugar down on the counter and wadding up the grocery bag. It vanished into her empty gathering bag.

"I'm not sure how much of this stuff we can use, but it's all interesting flavors! I might be able to open the coconut, but it's hard to do without spilling the juice inside unless you have tools or something."

At Royce's question Abby turned and gave the wheel a gentle pat, gentle because it was obviously very soft. "Got this from a guy I know. He makes cheese, and I usually sell him nuts and stuff. Guess he adds them to the cheese or something. Anyway I was starting to head this way after I grabbed some of my gathered ingredients, and I thought I'd stop by the store and see if the guy there knew anything that might go good in bread."

She looked a teeny bit guilty, glancing back at the block. The guy hadn't exactly said the cheese would go good in baking, and in fact the only thing he knew cheese and dough were good for was frying, and when he let her sample this stuff is had been good! Not really too strong a flavor of its own, and apparently some people liked to eat it with honey mixed in. Still, the main reason she'd bought it wasn't because she was thinking about baking, but because she just wanted an excuse to buy a wheel of cheese. It was a tiny wheel compared to the stuff like cheddar, but it still counted!

"He said was called anari cheese, and it is used in desserts though he didn't really know much about how. Fillings and stuff, was all he knew. I figured I'd bring it and see if you thought you could do something with it. If not I'll probably just eat it as is, it tastes like I could add it to just about anything!"

Of course, Royce thought while mentally slapping himself in the face. "Ah, you meant, 'staples' as in the basic things needed in baking" He laughed at his slowness before nodding toward the bags of flour and sugar. "Well, I already have some started here, but it'll be good to have bags to restock with before we run low. It is very troublesome to have to clean yourself up to be able to buy sugar after realizing you've run out." Royce smirked. "I'd know from personal experience."

His attention was then back to the coconut. "I probably don't have the right tools. I've never used a whole coconut. Just the shavings you can buy pre-dried." Royce stared at the thing, nearly leering at it. It was slowly becoming a sort of challenge in his head. Royce suddenly wanted to open it. "How messy would it be? ... And what tools will we need?"

He snapped back to Abby as she moved on to the cheese. Royce nodded as she explained the wheel, but he still looked confused by it. He had never heard of anari cheese before. Then again, he hadn't dealt with any cheese other than creamcheese. "I've personally never heard of that kind of cheese. However, I am still new to the variety of bakery things. I mostly just know bread and your basic cake recipe." Royce winced, hating to admit his novice status. "I'm more than happy to work on new things, though, and they usually come out good."

Royce contemplated the cheese. "Anything?" He looked at Abby, his lips pursed in contemplation. "I'm not normally one for cheese, but I'll give this thing a try. So... Any ideas on where we shall begin?" Royce was finally showing how nervous he was. He didn't want to look like an idiot infront of Abby. This was his first time teaching and he had no clue what to do. And thanks to his brother, he couldn't even keep it from his friend.

Abby grinned and stretched out a wing, the clawed tip lightly grazing against Royce's side. "I'd never heard of it either. The cheese dude was telling me a bit about it as I was eating the sample. Apparently it can be soft or hard, but if you want the soft stuff you gotta use it quick cause it doesn't keep well. Hard stuff's only really good for grating. Soft's got a texture similar to ricotta, whatever that means. I think it can be used as a vehicle for saltly or sweet, it's got that kind of no-taste that isn't one or the other."

She tucked her wings back up to her body, tapping the coconut lightly with her claws. "Maybe this should be an end-of-the-day thing, just in case we accidently break something trying to open it. I heard hammers help, and chissels make it easier to control and thus less of a mess. I could probably open it with my horns if I was really determined, but that would make a huuuuge mess and tons of noise." She suddenly grinned. "Which sounds awesome, but I figured the dude you live with wouldn't appreciate that."

Abby examined the table of ingredients she'd pulled from her first bag, looking for something interesting to catch her eye. She suddenly reached forward and snagged the bananas and jar of peanut butter. "Can we use these first?"

iMoony
At some point he'll have to meet her new familiar XD She doesn't have him/her at the time period though, so later.

Royce jumped and stiffened at the touch of Abby's wing. He blushed before slowly relaxing, hoping his guest had not noticed. "Then maybe we should have a taste test of that cheese later. We can then brainstorm uses for it... Or consume it completely if it's really good," Royce said with a chuckle.

"Then we'll crack the coconut." Royce nodded sternly at the coconut. He grinned back at Abby, soaking up her energy. He laughed as she mentioned his roommate. "Yeah, he might not like all that. But so long as I'm the one to clean up the mess, and not him, we might get away with it." Royce glanced around for a moment. "Though we may have to hunt for the tools."

Royce looked at the two ingredients Abby indicated and thought. "Okay... Peanut Butter Banana bread or cookies? I personally prefer the cookies." He smiled, willing to give his opinion. Then he thought better and quickly added, "Ah, but if you'd rather we do the bread we can do that. Bread is what I know best." He blushed again, wondering if he could sound more flustered.

Sure! Maybe it can be an in-thread RP or in conjunction with another plot.... Unless you can think of something interesting involving her familiar. *afraid of short guild RPs*

A glint of mischievous glee sparked in her eyes at Royce's reaction, though truthfully her purpose wasn't to tease him; it just happened to be a nice coincidence and did her immature side a world of good to see. Normally she would have teased him about it or tried subtly pushing her luck to see how far she could go with him, but as Royce held knowledge of making yummy things that would yield tasty results (if not imparted knowledge on how to make such things herself), she decided to behave. For now.

Besides, she had something else for her attention to grab ahold of...

"Crack the coconut. That sounds so silly!" She giggled. "I mean I know you mean it literally, but it just sounds like it could mean so many things! Top of the list of what comes to mind is a drink, or a dance move."

What would a dance called Crack the Coconut look like? Abby resolved to make up such a thing herself. Soon.

Her attention was yet again whisked away with a shiney new question. "Oh, cookies sound amazing," she enthused, doing a happy little bounce. "I mean bread is totally awesome, I ain't knockin', but cookies are like little flats of sweet breads you can carry in your pocket! Well I guess you could carry bread in your pocket too, but it could get squished and it's not as good squished and since cookies are already pretty flat there's no worries!"

iMoony
Hmm. I kinda think it would be hilarious if we could work in them discovering her familiar together. Guild or thread works since I log everything anyway. I don't have Scuttlebutt's personality nailed just yet, but she's gonna be a handful that you gotta keep an eye on XD I was thinking something along the lines of Scutte following Abby without her realizing it either to the bakery or at Royce's apartment, and somehow finding a way inside and causing trouble. Suggestions?
PostPosted: Fri Feb 15, 2013 10:04 pm

Royce chuckled along with Abby. While he did not think the phrase an odd sounding one, he could not help but laugh when she did. It was an infectious one that caused Royce to wish to join in. Her debate between drink or dance genuinely made him smile.

"Cookies it is, then," Royce said. He smiled to himself while arranging the items they would need as Abby prattled on about cookies versus bread. "Totally understandable," he chimed when she was done. "Cookies take less time, anyways. They have a quicker turnaround." Royce winked at her, practically beaming.

"Okay, so you brought peanut butter, bananas, sugar, flour... I should have baking powder, brown sugar, salt, and butter." Royce moved from counter to counter to grab the last four items. (The a stick of butter had been left on the counter closest to the fridge, waiting.) He then grabbed out a giant mixing bowl along with an electric mixer, couple of spatulas, measuring cups and spoons. Now with everything laid out before them, Royce turned to his student.

"Most cookies need baking soda or powder. Yeast is almost exclusively for bread. But they're all 'rising agents' that helps make sure our treats don't come out flat and hard. Not tasty." Royce indicated the baking powder and the yeast Abby had brought. "Flour, butter, and sugar are also important, but after that, it's pretty much free range." He moved over to the stove, turning the oven on to preheat to 350* "Though I do have a recipe in mind we can go off of, if you want guaranteed success."

jinxgirl5
That sounds like fun! Not sure if guild or thread would be preferred... I think I like the bakery idea better because if she causes a lot of chaos, it could cause tension. Like Royce would be in trouble for bringing Abby who brought Scuttlebutt. (Since maybe we could do a small time skip and she's known to associate with Royce at that point?) What do you think?

This made me think of Royce getting a familiar. Since he's not allowed to have coffee (makes him hyper), he would get a coffee/bear one at the coffee stage, be all "not mine? yet looks like me?" then BAM bear familiar to help him. (Only the familiar is a lazy and barely does what Royce asks.)

Abby's ears flicked back a little in dismay as Royce started pulling out a whole mass of ingredients. So much stuff needed to make cookies! Would she ever be able to really learn how to do this? It just redoubled her admiration for Royce, no matter how much of a novice he said he was.

"I think a recipe might be a good idea to start with, since I have no idea what we're supposed to be doing with all these things," she admitted, glancing at the ingredients he had lined up and once again maveling that all of that would eventually turn into cookies.

"So I know what the difference between a soda and powder is, but what's the difference between baking soda and powder? They both looked like powders to me. And are there cookies made with yeast, if it's only almost exclusively for bread," Abby asked curiously as she watched Royce move around the kitchen.

iMoony
Abby would go into sassy rage mode if anyone thought to get Royce in trouble over the mischief caused by a familiar, especially if that familiar turns out to be hers! Hopefully the tension would be enough to be interesting without driving a wedge between 'em.

Scuttle would love messing with a coffee bear if Royce got a familiar. She's got enough energy and mischief to more than balance out lazyness XD
