He was well on to his way to making this place a home. He'd become accustomed to the lions here, their traditions, their way of life. Even if some parts still didn't make complete sense (Gairnéad got the feeling that only someone born and raised in the Mwezi'Johari could fully understand their religion) he knew when to smile, nod and be polite.

Mziwanda was off doing...something. He hadn't asked what, given the expression on her face. Like it was some lioness secret. He did not know that much about females. He did not want to know. That was woman territory and the red lion knew better than to stray into it.

So he was sunning himself in the cool green grass, enjoying the day. Later he'd go on duty and patrol the border, but for now his time was his own.

Normally when Shangyue wandered, it was during free time when he would not be missed. Today, he'd decided to see what would happen if he got away when he was supposed to be having lessons with his mother and father. They weren't very interesting, anyway, a lot of it was chatting with priests and all he did was stand there and try not to fall asleep from how boring it was. The interesting things were much rarer.

Since he was technically sneaking away, he was crawling stealthily through the grass (as stealthily as a cub could be expected to do so) for much of his journey. Once he felt certain he was far enough away that they couldn't spot him without really looking, he straightened himself up and looked around to decide how he would spend his stolen time.

It just so happened he popped up out of the grass a short distance ahead of Gairnéad- but facing the wrong way to spot him immediately.

One of his biggest accomplishments in becoming a member of the pride was convincing his instincts and reactions to, well, be less highly strung when he was not on duty. Within the pride, there were always lions around of all ages, and Gairnéad had no desire to accidentally injure someone because he'd thought they were sneaking up on him.

So the sounds of someone moving through the grass were normal, were fine, were nothing to be concerned about. The red lion continued dozing without reacting to whoever was nearby.

If they wanted to talk to him, they would. Otherwise, he'd just enjoy the warm sunlight.

His plan to escape for the day was hatched and put into action quickly, but now that he was free, he was happy to take him time. If he didn't, he might have missed the lounging guard entirely. He started when he turned about and realized there was a lion nearby, and then he stared and stared.

Shangyue did not recognize this lion, by himself or from any other lions around the pride. But he knew they were far within the borders, the little prince was not so brave as to go that far by himself yet. So he was a complete mystery and, unfortunately, a witness if someone came by looking for the missing prince. There was no changing that so there was no harm in investigating, he decided.

"Hello," he said, finally blinking and walking up to Garinéad.

A cub's voice hailed him. Green eyes blinked and Gairnéad turned to face the small purple lion standing nearby. Purple, huh. He seemed to do a lot of talking with purple lions. It was Mziwanda's main coat color as well, though there weren't, on the whole, a lot of purple lions in the pride. At least, not from what he could tell.

"Hello there, little one," he replied politely. He wondered what the boy wanted from him. On the other paw, it was rather...nice...that a cub could feel so secure in this pride, that he could wander up and speak to a complete stranger.

It was immediately apparent that this stranger didn't recognize him as a prince, but his own strangeness allowed Shangyue to ignore that. He was too distracted by the contrast of Gairnéad's mane and markings to the rest of his dark fur. At night he probably looked very interesting.

"Who are you?" he asked, straightening up and attempting to puff out his little chest importantly, "I don't recognize you."

"My name is Gairnéad," the older lion answered. He wondered if even cubs knew just about everyone in the pride. It did make sense...though it was a large pride. At least, it was large to his roguelands sensibility.

"I've only been here for a few moons," he continued, explaining what he could. "It's more of a home than I'd ever had before." Had that been too much for a cub? He really didn't know. His only experience with children to date had been his own youth, which didn't really compare in so very many ways.

"Gairnéad," he repeated thoughtfully, nose wrinkled as he nearly stumbledover the strange name. Then the stranger admitted he was a rogue not too long ago and the strangeness of both the lion and his name made sense. He was recent enough to have been around for all of Shangyue's life but not so long that he was a big deal everybody knew about.

"You have a strange name, Gairnéad," he said finally, nodding, "I'm Shangyue."

Well, wasn't he a serious little ball of fluff? Gairnéad couldn't help but feel amused by the cub and found himself smiling at the boy. He could definitely envision so very many children being raised here.

Perhaps those of his own blood?

No, he didn't want to go down that route yet. Or worse, mention such thoughts to Mziwanda. The red lion got the feeling that she would be...excited.

"It is very nice to meet you, Shangyue," he told the boy. The name sounded a bit odd to his ears, but he hadn't been here too long and hadn't yet figured out what was "normal".

So they'd introduced themselves. Now what?
PostPosted: Sun Jan 20, 2013 11:56 am
And.. that was that, it seemed. Gairnéad's short story about himself wasn't one that brought many other questions to the cubs mind and now his curiosity was satisfied. His mind started to wander again and he glanced around to see if anybody was headed their way, if anybody had noticed he had run off.

"You can't tell anybody you saw me," he said, looking back at the older lion and nodding seriously, "You have to listen to me because I'm a prince."

The adult cocked his head as he considered what the boy had said. A prince? He was inclined to disbelieve that claim, but what did he know? The boy might be telling the truth. Certainly it would explain why he expected an unknown adult to obey him.

"And why would someone be asking if I'd seen you?" Gairnéad asked in return. It was an honest question. He could think of several reasons, not all of them good, which made his green eyes narrow as he considered the cub in front of him.

Uhhhhhhhh.. darn, now he had to lie. Or tell the truth and tell him again that he had to listen because he was a prince. Neither seemed like attraction options and he took his time deciding, staring up at Gairnéad's green eyes thoughtfully.

"I'm playing a game," he said finally, not telling a total lie since to him it was sort of a game, "Like hide and seek but harder."

He nearly continued to say that his mother would be looking for him but decided that sounded more suspicious than anything else. So he simply closed his mouth and nodded, that was all Gairnéad needed to know. And, so he couldn't argue, he turned around and marched off.

"Remember! Don't tell!"

The maroon lion blinked slowly as he watched the purple cub left abruptly. He...really didn't understand children. He had a suspicion that the boy had lied about at least one thing, but whether that was why someone would be asking after him or his name (or anything in between), Gairnéad simply couldn't tell.

Oh well. If he was asked about the boy, he'd worry about it then. For now, the sun was warm, the grass was soft, and he had time yet before he had to go out to the border.
