Lume slid down the side of the cliff, landing in the sandy dirt with a cloud of dust rising up around him. He had been chasing a pretty cheetah that he had met the other day. Unfortunately, the tricky gal had gotten away before Lume had the chance to really talk to her. She had said something about having to get back in time for some sort of race. Both the mysterious female and the mention of a race intrigues the leotah. The male wondered if racing was a part of all cheetah's lifestyles. Lume often wondered about the lives of cheetahs. His mother, a leopard had only ever educated him on her customs. He didn't know who his father was, only that he was some passing cheetah that his mother had spent a night or two with. Lume could only guess what it was like to be a full-blooded cheetah. He himself constantly felt the needed to simply get out and run. Which he often did when his mother went off on her own, or when Lume took a day or two to himself. The thought that there were groups of cheetahs who spent all day racing each other across the sand was amazing. Lume had to investigate.

Hanja stopped to sniff at a track in the sand. The paw prints were heading into the pride's boundaries. Part of his job as guard dog was to make sure that no intruders made their way across the borders. Upon investigating closer, the dog realized that the tracks belonged to one of their own cheetahs. That was interesting. Cheetahs usually weren't allowed out on their own. He would have to alert someone later on. Rules, protocols, that was his life now. It was not something he particularly liked, but Hanja was trying to make an effort to change. The pride at least kept him from stealing and conning every person he met. That was in his past. It was a life he no longer lived. Sometimes he missed it. Sometimes he didn't. The dog sighed. He didn't really know what was going on anymore. Hanja continued on. He only had a few more sections to patrol, and then he would call it a day. A black shape moved near the rocks, causing Hanja's hackles to rise. As the dog drew near, he stopped dead. He recognized those wings. He knew that feline. Ages ago, an afternoon sitting out polishing his jewelry...an attack which he lost...a prize necklace stolen. The dog growled fiercely. This was not a blast from the past he was excited to see. "Well well, look who it is." He snarled, trotting over to the cat.

Lume back up into the rocks behind him. Crap. Who was this guy, walking around liked he owned the place? It would be easy to just rush past this dog and make off in the direction the pretty cheetah had gone. No way a mutt like this could outrun...him... The male's jaw dropped open. It was the jewelry dog! The canine with all the trinkets! Lume remembered fighting, and stealing from, this guy. He thought he would never see that mutt again. And yet here the dog was, coming out him with a snarl. The feline grinned sheepishly as he began looking for an escape route. "Small world, huh?" Lume laughed nervously. He really wasn't in the mood for a fight. And what were the chances that he would run into the dog here, in the middle of nowhere? "Great seeing you and all, but I've gotta...uh..." Lume dashed to the side, trying to side step the canine.

Hanja flashed back to their first encounter, where the cat had tried this same move. Back then, the cat had been grabbing the jewelry Hanja was preparing to sell. The cat had been too fast for him. But now, Hanja was more trained. He was faster, stronger, and new proper fighting technique. The cat wouldn't be able to best him this time. He snapped after the cat, latching on to the back of the feline's thigh. Hanja dug his paws into the dirt and held his ground. If the feline twisted too much, he would rip his own tendon and lose the ability to walk.

Lume yowled in pain as the dog bit into the back of his legs, turning his head around to give the canine a snarl. The motion caused his leg more pain, and the cat winced. He was certainly in a bit of a bind now. He couldn't rip his leg free; the dog was holding on too tightly. Nor could Lume turn around and swipe at the mutt. Any offensive action at all would cause him to go lame. The male all but shuddered at that thought. To not be able to dance or run or leap from branch to branch was a fate worse than death. Of course, his mother would tell him that anything was better than death, but Lume begged to differ. The cat decided that he needed to get the dog to let go of his leg. Looking down at sand around his front paws, Lume came up with an idea. Spreading his legs out just a bit more, the leotah kicked sand up towards the dog's face.

Hanja reeled back as sand flew into his eyes. That dirty, rotten, low-down cat. Proper techniques be damned. Just like last time, the fight was going down the cheap-trick route. That worked fine for him. Hanja always was better with using dirty tricks. The guard dog felt his opponent pull out of his grasp. He needed to recover quickly. Despite being much more of a fighter now, the feline could still best Hanja in speed. If the cat got a running start, he would never be able to catch up. Hanja reached out, his teeth closing on the first thing they could. The canine blinked the rest of the sand out of his eyes and smiled cruelly around the fur in his mouth. Hanja had ended up grabbing the cat's tail. It wasn't a serious injury, but it was sure to cause a lot of pain.

Lume forcefully jerked to a stop as he tried to pull away, a sharp pain emanating from the base of his tail. Cursed dog. The feline growled in frustration before turning to strike at the canine. All he needed was a split second to get away, and he would be off across the sands. Part of him swore that this was some sort of punishment for continuously chasing tail. Though Lume couldn't see the harm in it. It wasn't like he could actually have children. His mother had told him as much. It was a hybrid thing, apparently. Whatever. Lume could care less. It just meant that he could have more fun with leaving any fatherless cubs in his wake. Claws out and sharp, the feline cut through the dog's eyebrow, nails dragging a bit as they caught the edge of the canine's muzzle. Part of him hoped he hadn't actually blinded the mutt. Part him really didn't care.

Blood dripped into Hanja's eye, making him hiss in pain. Luckily the strike had missed his actual eyeball, saving him from visual impairment. Unluckily for the cat, it had righteously pissed him off. The dog was done with this cocky little furball. There was no way he was going to lose to the kitten this time. He was going to teach the cat a lesson and make sure the male never came back here again. No doubt he was here to mess with the pride's female cheetahs. Like hell was Hanja going to let that happen. If there was one thing the dog had learned from his new life, it was comradeship. He cared about his cheetahs, and he would even take one the pride's lions to protect them. With a snarl that resembled more of a roar, Hanja leapt at the hybrid and crunched down on the cat's face. Hanja's teeth tore through the skin of his forehead and muzzle. As he increased the force of the bite, Hanja felt a sort of sick pleasure at hearing a crack of bone somewhere on the cat's face. The dog leaned back and thrashed his head, listening closely for anymore cracks.

Pain knocked the wind out of him, making him gasp and choke. Lume felt like a sharp piece of metal had been shoved into his muzzle right where it connected to his face. His entire head felt like it was on fire. The leotah could feel blood beginning to well up and drip out of his nose. When he tried to breathe in, blood ran into his lungs and the pain grew worse. Lume was forced to breathe through his mouth, letting out a small whimper as he did. Sure, the cheetah had been beautiful and just as sassy as he was, but no girl was worth this much trouble. Lume needed to get out there, and he needed to do it now. Rearing up on his back legs, the leotah used his front paws to shove the dog off, flinging him back towards the rocks. A bit of skin and fur came off with the canine, but it was necessary. Seeing his chance, the feline took off, hind leg screaming in pain at the effort. Lume needed to find someone to look at his face and make sure it was alright. Not even bothering to look back, the male raced across the sand back the way he had come, leaving the dog far behind him.

The dog slammed against the rocks, sharp points lightly scratching his back. Hanja immediately forced himself back up, shaking off. He was braced to lunge at the intruder again, but the cat was taking off across the desert. The dog smirked in satisfaction as he watched the furball disappear into the horizon. He had wanted to teach the cat a lesson, and it was obvious that he had successfully done that. With any luck, Hanja wouldn't be seeing that feline ever again. Of course, now he would need to go see the healers. Not to mention make a full, complete report to his superior. Then again, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing. He would be able to say that he fought off an intruder with only suffering some light scratching, whereas his opponent had some serious wounds. Surely Hanja would be commended for such a feat. It was interesting to notice how proud he felt having done his job well. Perhaps the Red Robin had been right. Find a cause to believe in, the lion had said. Hanja was starting to think that he had. Chest puffed out a little, Hanja headed back to the pride's main area, a light spring in his step and swagger in his gait.
