Edgar Ashworth did not enjoy parties. He did not enjoy social gatherings of any sort and most days, was content to avoid the eye of the rich and the noble. As the son of a minor lord, that was both acceptable and unacceptable; few enough knew him to notice that he was sorely absent from the social scene but for that very reason, he was quite needed there.

Part of it was simply shame. They didn't know, but Edgar himself was fully aware that he was not truly Lord Ashworth's son; and the question that had haunted him for three long years remained: if he was not the son of Edwin Ashworth, then who was he? Whose son was he really, and if it so happened that he was not the son of a lord, did that still make him one of them, one of the upper class?

Ed's instincts told him no. His inherent pessimism insisted on it. But that was not the answer his guardian sought.

If there was anything meeting Dardanos had done for Ed, it was to fill that lonely void in his heart and to show him that he was worth everything he had been brought up to think himself worth. What had happened in his life was out of his hands and the blame ought not lie with him. It was a lesson that the buck taught him time and again, yet somehow it was a lesson that did not stay with him. It was far too easy to fall back into thinking he might as well have been one of those beggar children in the street, dressed in rags and emaciated.

Today seemed another fine day for Dardanos to reiterate his lesson, so at the buck's urging, Ed had put on some of his finer clothes and ridden to the racetrack. The morning races always seemed to draw smaller crowds than the afternoon ones, but for the purpose of the exercise, any crowd would do. And Dardanos himself held a healthy fascination/bemusement toward the sport of racing, as if he couldn't quite understand why those silly horses would suffer themselves to run about in circles for the entertainment of humans.

"I suppose I will simply... watch for the moment, Don," Edgar said aloud, eyeing the immaculately dressed population with mild unease.

Oh this place.... just how boring could it really get? the party's were drab, and the food was more than below par, almost to the point of being repulsive! Well perhaps not, but to the very snobby lord that was Matvei, who had high expectations, he simply was not pleased with about anything that Sunderland had to offer. Having been here for just a month or two now upon his parent's insistence, the young man had found that he did not enjoy it here. At all. There was always something to complain about, and find fault in. Always something that didn't tickle his fancy. And he couldn't even think of a time where he'd found enjoyment out of anything since being here. But to be fair, not much made Matvei smile...

On this day, he was left to his own devices while his relatives had some sort of meeting with important clients and connections. Normally he would have been invited, but this was on more top secret business... Great. But no matter, that meant he got to spend some more time away from those stuffy old people. Wearing one of his thick, fur coats, the young lord had taken to visiting the racetracks as well. His carriage dropped both him, and his precious guardian off, and waited as it usually did outside of the complex. Walking in, with the cream little fawn at his side -- which wore a large red bow around his neck-- Matvei earned a few looks. Many of them were given intense glances in return, causing those who were making said eye contact to look away quick enough. He was used to this sort of thing ever since getting his precious Ixton. The fawn clicked along merrily, ears swiveling about at all the sounds and bright eyes blinking at all the sights! His nose twitched eagerly at the many scents that assaulted his senses, especially those of the horses! it was all so exciting! slender, tiny legs lifted high as he pranced, head lifted tall too, but keeping diligent upon staying at his chosen's side. However... spying another guardian grabbed his interest straight away, ears swiveling towards the other buck with great curiosity, which in turn caused Matvei to look towards Dardanos as well... with an unamused expression. Hm. Still nothing compared to the perfection that was his Ixton...

Edgar's gaze drifted from one noble to the next, taking in their elaborate dress and accessories. He himself was more taken to plainer attire, with none of the frills and lace that adorned many a nobleman's shirt or cuffs. They seemed neither practical nor comfortable to Edgar, who could survive if he failed to impress the Duke of Here-or-there with his sense of style.

His gaze landed on another young noble who had just entered, drawn more by the sight of the young fawn by his side than his extravagant outfit. The pair seemed to have noticed them too, and and Edgar remarked wryly to Dardanos, You have a... Admirer would not have been quite the right word, given the other's decidedly unimpressed expression. An observer, Don.

The buck's bright eyes, glowing and warm as the flame in a fireplace, had been fixed upon the track where horses were prancing in the warm-up ring. At his Chosen's comment, Dardanos shifted his gaze sideways, meeting Matvei's look with one that was equally unamused. A low huff of breath escaped from his nose, as if to say, Hah. Indeed.

They could both sense the judgment in the young man's stare, but while it rankled somewhat with Edgar, Dardanos simply shrugged it off and turned his bottomless gaze onto his Chosen. An image flashed through Edgar's mind, a small version of the noble, as if seen from far away. He is nothing, the buck seemed to say. He is not the Judge. Only you can be that.
