Hawthorn couldn't move. His legs shook, but fear held him in place. Before him crouched a creature one could only describe as scary. It had fur like any other fox, but its ears were elongated, toes too, but its face was the worst. Instead of a muzzle there was a flat face, like a mask and devoid of emotion, but baring it's pointed teeth. Deep in its throat it growled, not moving to strike, but keeping Hawthorn trapped.

Hawthorn knew it was all in his head. He was fully aware of that. However he was too stricken with horror to make it go away. All he could think about was the sharpness of the teeth and the creepiness of the face. This time it was almost too much to take. It had even happened on the ground, where Hawthorn thought he was safe.

Hawthorn's mouth trembled, words coaxing themselves out as indignation took over. "Go away!" he shouted with all his might. The male quickly closed his eyes as the creature before him tilted its head. With his eyes shut, Hawthorn did not notice the creature fade just a bit, only to gain opacity once more. "Leave me alone!" And while he hoped the woods really were deserted (shouting at nothing puts others off), a small part of him wished to be rescued from his thoughts.

[[ Like I said before, the creature is real. Hawthorn does not know that, though, and does have the ability to uncreated the thing. IDK about the title. We can change it later.]]

Voices. He heard voices. The angelic had been visiting the forest for one reason, to remind himself of his first home. It was quiet at first, a calming peace that he rarely missed compared to the city. Sometimes he did miss the forest, however the male always preferred the city. It wasn't lonely there, if you stepped outside you would be bombarded by hundreds of lives, pressing against you and snarling if you happened to be in the way. He didn't mind, it meant he was alive. It meant he had people around. It meant he wasn't alone anymore. Still, at times he longed to visit his first home and would escape the city to fly above the forest. Today had been one of those rare days. He had not expected to hear such a loud and frightened voice.

In seconds his protective nature kicked in, wings pressing against his body as he dove down closer to the trees. It took barely a minute to find the culprit and.... a horrible beast? He had never seen such a monster before, his spine twitching as hot anger flashed through his system. He was the kind of character who would lunge at danger to protect a stranger, his body made to protect and heart made to care. Quickly, he landed in-front of the frightened male and before the beast, tail lashing as a strange snarl escaped his mouth. It was not often Demi snarled, his entire body rippling with the snarl as he stood his ground.

"Get out." He snarled, wings expanding in an attempt to make himself seem bigger. The monster truly was frightening! However fear morphed into a desire to fight when it came to Demi, the usually gentle male now shaking with growls and a tail lashing violently. His eyes narrowed, ears flipping back as he stayed in-front of the victim of this beast. He wasn't moving.

Hawthorn heard the rustling of the leaves from above his head, but he kept his eyes shut. All in my head. It's all in my head. He chanted these words in his head but a part of his mind still saw the creature before him. Hawthorn could even now feel the presence of another body. One so close he could reach out at touch it. He knew he'd only feel air, but the temptation to try was a hard one to resist.

The creature wavered again, fading away before quickly becoming solid. Its mouth slowly closed over its teeth as it stared. As soon as the strange, snarled words ripped through the air, the creature was gone in a flash. Hawthorn opened his eyes to see the end of another fox. He blinked slowly to make sure he wasn't mistaken. Nope, that was real. What had he just yelled?

"How long have you been there?" Hawthorn asked, shakily getting up. He could feel his cheeks heating with embarrassment. How much had this stranger seen? "Ah, sorry for disturbing the peace of the forest. I'm not deranged. Just... scared myself." Hawthorn was obviously grasping at straws as to why he had been huddled and yelling. "I'll-- I'll just 'get out', then." He bit his lip and wiped roughly at the tears slipping down his cheek.

When the demon vanished he was, at first, confused, then relieved, and then worried as his head turned to view the victim. Kind blue eyes softened as his stance became gentle, tail coiling around his back legs and twitching against his side. At the questions he was relieved the other was fine enough to speak, wings twitching and folding against his side as he viewed the other.

"I was flying above and saw your problem." He gently responded, ear flicking in confusion. The question didn't register properly with him. How long had he been there? Hadn't the other seen him? Hadn't the other just seen him descend? The next statements made him blink, ears raising and head tilting to the side. "Mmm, what?" Another flick of the tail and ears and he was moving closer to the male, moving hair back. W-wait! Was the other crying?!

"Wait! Wait wait wait." He skittered closer to the other, flicking his tail over the males paw and brushing tears away, ears flicking back. "Did I upset you? When did I tell you to get out? Was that your friend? I thought it was going to hurt you! Are you okay? I'm awfully sorry." Genuine worry touched his tone, ears pinned back as concern kissed his features. Why was the other crying?

Hawthorn stiffened as the other got near. It was obvious the stranger was concerned for his safety, but Hawthorn did not like the close proximity. His eyes grew wide as his tears were brushed away by the other. It was a kindness Hawthorn was not used to receiving from others. Usually his family were the only ones that cared for him.

"Friend?" Hawthorn asked. His brows knitted together in confusion as he tried to work out what the stranger meant. Had there been someone else here? No, Hawthorn was sure it had previously just been him and that creature alone in this forest. Yet this fox was asking about another.

"W-Wait," Hawthorn stuttered out. Slowly understanding seemed to relax his expression. "Did you see it too?" Hawthorn almost looked excited. His eyes were bright, tears rimming them, and his ears perked up. Then they fell and he had his guard up. "Please tell me you also saw the creature with the weird face too..."

As the other stiffened and eyes grew wide he made a mental note not to touch the other again. Not for now. Or ever. Depends on if the other just ran off like he seemingly wanted to. Then, the mood change. His ears pricked up, tail flicking at the sudden change, head tilting.

"Did I- Of course I saw it! It was absolutely terrifying!" He sounded astonished, which he was. How could someone honestly ask him that? That monster was horrid. Unless he was blind that question was silly! Still, he began to put together two and two, ears flicking backwards as worry crossed his face. Had the other thought only he could see them? Was he always alone with those monsters?

"Did you think no one else could?" He whispered, wings fluttering as his head dipped down to view the others face easier as well as make himself smaller to put the other at ease.

It was hard to be both happy and scared, but Hawthorn was some how being both. He was elated to know that the things he thought were all in his head weren't. It meant he wasn't like his mother in that respect. Despite Hawthorn's love for his mother, this had always been one of his deepest fears.

This news brought up new worries, though. If the monsters that haunted his waking hours were not just his own demons to bear, how dangerous were they? Hawthorn was not sure if they were just haunts that would never be able to harm or if they could scratch and claw should he inadvertently allow it. Then again, were they ever under his control?

All these thoughts raced through Hawthorn's head before he sniffed back tears. "Yes." He smiled woefully at his savior. "Ever since I was little those types of things have always haunted me. However, when ever I called for someone to come see, the creature would vanish before they arrived. I had no way to know... so I just assumed..."

Hawthorn closed his eyes and took a steadying breath. "Thank you for saving me, sir. Your presence is much appreciated." His smile held far less sadness this time.

Long ago, someone had told Demi he must have been a knight in his previous life. Already his heart fluttered as that protective streak rushed through him. The tears! The pain! He wanted to scoop the other up and steal him away, protect him within a stone castle from the dangers of the world. He wanted to help, viewing the male behind hair that had flipped into his eyes briefly. Suddenly, he touched the others hand, an attempt to comfort the man.

"For that long you've suffered?" Honest concern reached through his voice, wings twitching and flipping against his back. Ah! He did not even know the others name! Removing his paw, he pulled his arm behind his back and bowed, hoping to make the male smile at the old fashioned, silly gesture.

"My name is Demi. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Hawthorn glanced down quickly as his paw was touched. Was it weird to blush? He bit his lip before shrugging in response to the question. "It hasn't been all bad. I thought I had figured it out... I think the woods made it worse today." When the other withdrew his paw, Hawthorn couldn't help but feel a tad disappointed. The physical contact, though minor, was comforting even from the stranger.

He was soon smiling and holding back a chuckle as the male bowed in introduction. "Nice to meet you, Demi," Hawthorn said doing his best to not laugh. It would be rude and inconsiderate, since the male had been so kind to him. "My name's Hawthorn."

Hawthorn's gaze roamed around the area before returning to Demi. "This might be asking a bit much, and you may feel free to decline, but... Would you mind staying with me for a while?" He moved to pick up a thin, leather-bound book off the ground and held it before Demi. "I was attempting to catalog a few plants in this forest before..." Hawthorn looked pained, unwilling to say the words. He shook his head and pressed on, "I would like to continue... But I can come back later with someone else if you're too busy." Hawthorn was a blushing mess as he sheepishly lowered his eyes. They were still relatively close to the end of the forest that he could make his way out safely should Demi rather not. "It's probably weird since we just met... I just don't want to be alone."

The tone of the male was obviously him trying to hide a laugh. He smirked, flipping his hair out of his face as he looked at the male. Tail flicking playfully, he raised his ears at the offer and smirked, nodding.

"I wouldn't mind at all. I have nothing else to do, and I'd be happy to accompany you." He took the book, flipping through it quietly, and then looked up when the other held a pained expression. His wings fluttered, ears pressing back against his head as concern spread across his face. His hands pushed the book back to Hawthorn, noticing the blush now. Was the boy sick or nervous? Nervous to ask? Perhaps nervous because he didn't trust Demi? Oh! Like he'd let anyone harm the poor boy! Nope. No no. He'd need to reassure the male, especially since he had spent so long thinking only he could see those horrid creatures.

"Hey. I'll protect you if they come back, okay? So just... just be happy. You aren't bothering me, and I don't mind helping! I'm not a wiz with plants, just warning you. " He wanted this male to stop being so nervous. The boy looked like he was about to just fall apart right there! The white, blue, and blond male flapped his wings playfully, lowering his head to view Hawthorn better, again, and stuck his tongue out. "Hey. I'm not that scary, right? You can look at me! I won't bite you~ I think I'm a perfectly nice guy. What do you think so far? "

Hawthorn released the breath he hadn't realized he had held the instant Demi agreed, but he dared not look up. "Thank you." His blush did not leave now that the male was flipping through his sketches. He knew he wasn't a great artist, despite what his family said, but he enjoyed the task of recording new flora and fauna that way. Hawthorn was worried about what Demi would think of them. It didn't help that he still felt shaken from the earlier incident.

He received his book quietly, unsure what else to say. When Demi spoke Hawthorn shyly before nodding. "Okay. Thank you, again." His grin widened. "It's fine if you're no good with plants. Though, if you know anything about them, it would be helpful."

Hawthorn snorted at Demi's silly antics. "No, you're not scary," he said chuckling a bit as he did so. "You are, indeed, nice." Hawthorn finally raised his eye to meet Demi's gaze. "I'm sorry if I made you think otherwise. You are very nice. I'm lucky to have meet someone as kind as you." His blush had finally receded as he tucked his book into a traveling bag. "Well... Shall we get going, then?"

He simply nodded as the other thanked him, tail flicking pleasantly at the compliment that he was nice. Good, he wasn't frightening, that was all he wanted, though the compliment was nice. He glanced at the book, again, wondering briefly how many plants the other had documented and how many more there were to go. He himself was interested in cooking. The book reminded him of recipe books, a collection of interesting items based around a hobby.

"Yes, we should." Gathering himself up, having sat down for a few seconds, the angelic cast a grin towards Hawthorn. Perhaps he'd find some ingredients on the way? He doubted the restaurant would allow him to tinker around with some forest found items, but at home?

"Do you live in these woods?" He had, a long time ago, back when he lived inside an old wooden cabin, before he found the city fascinating and the world of lights comfortable to dwell in. Sometimes he missed the woods. Other times he was content with his decision to live amongst the bright lights and machines. If only he could have both..

Hawthorn stretched while Demi got up, his wings flexing, relaxing his muscles after being scared stiff. He surveyed the forest quietly, trying to decide the way to go. The path to the left looked the thickest. It would probably provide the most diversity of plants. Nodding to himself, Hawthorn turned to head that way.

He paused before moving to answer Demi's question. "Ah, no." Hawthorn said a bit distracted. There was a flower peeking out from around a trunk that had caught his eye. He moved his head to view Demi, his concentration back on the other male. "My family lives far away, near another forest." Hawthorn beamed, a bit of pride showing through, "I already documented that whole forest, though."

Hawthorn faced forward again, walking slowly toward the flower behind the tree. "I've moved out. I'm living with a friend temporarily. He lives near this forest... But he may be moving in with his girlfriend soon." His brow furrowed, but he soon chuckled. "Maybe I can convince him to give me his house." Once at the flower, Hawthorn snatched out his book along with a pencil, and quickly sketched the bloom.

"What about you?" Hawthorn asked, his eyes darting from petals to paper. "Do you live here? That would explain why you were near enough to find me." He glanced at Demi, curiosity distracting him from his task.

He noticed the brow furrow, head tilting but letting it go, a short laugh escaping him. Ah, a couple moving in together? How cute. Demi had wished to have someone by his side before he left the forest, but that hadn't worked out in his favor. His wings spread, fluttering, twitching and stretching before flicking against his back in peace. An eyebrow raised at the question, head shaking gently.

"Ah, not anymore." He eyed the flower the male was looking at, head tilting. What flower was this? He snuck glanced at the sketches the male was creating, sneakily peering over the others shoulder before returning to his previous conversation.

"I lived in the forest for quite some time, actually. This forest, to be exact. I left to live in the city, but sometimes I like to visit my home. I was just going for a little fly by when I heard your shouts." He glanced back at the male, frowning gently. "I'm glad I choose today to visit."

Hawthorn listened patiently, not once straying his eyes from the other. It was a difficult task as his paws itched to continue his drawing, but he had been taught to face any partner in conversation. His mind wanted to know more about the stranger at any rate. Idle paws weren't the worst thing in the world.

So it really was all chance that the two should have met. "You're like a guardian angel," Hawthorn remarked. He blushed slightly before forcing a chuckle. "Of the forest, or something." He quickly turned back to his drawing, adding a few finishing touches to the flower. While doing so, he mentally berated himself for his honesty.

"So, um," Hawthorn started, wanting to switch to a different topic. "If you like to visit your home, why aren't you still living in it?" He looked at Demi quickly from the corner of his eye, hoping he hadn't offended. "The forest seems pleasant enough. I wouldn't mind staying... Not alone, though." Hawthorn laughed nervously while dating his completed drawing. "What do you think?"
