Mirram 'Ash' Michitka was drawing water from the well, a task she had done quietly and regularly over the months that the Michitkas had lived in Sunderland. Her two 'friends', her greatest friends in the world, perched in the trees, grooming and watching their friend. Diyzen and Bainer. Rooks that would follow their friend wherever she led. Grenta, the leader of the rooks, perched on Ash's shoulder, cocking her head to observe the water. “Sooooo, What 'ya doin there, Ash?” cawed the rook, looking back at her adopted human chick, “Pulling up more water, eh? Why do you even bother? There's rain, isn't there?” ”Yes, theres rain, Grenta, but we need more than rain my friend...” She lifted the bucket with some effort, ”Come, we must bring it to Mother.”

Not accustomed to sitting around and doing nothing while his human nestling and Antlers were gathering intell from some new human, Jackyl flew a slow, lazy circle high up in the sky to waste time. It also gave him the opportunity to scout out the area and report back anything interesting to his human.
Like the human gathering something down below. Dipping a wingtip, Jackyl narrowed his eyes and spiraled towards the human. He'd seen something in the trees move, so he angled towards them, staying silent until his wings were beating rapidly to slow his descent and he landed on a nearby branch, just a little above the two grooming rooks.
Ah, there was a third as well. The dark colored rook regarded them all in that unnerving, silent manner while he worked out just what the human was doing. Gathering water? Something his human nestling had done several times before. So nothing very interesting. Jackyl huffed, clicking his beak in a grumbling manner.

Diyzen cocked his head upwards, taking a break in his grooming to examine the newcomer. He returned to his pruning, disinterested. It was a male, so he didn't really care.
Bainer kept her eye on the newcomer. Not that other rooks were any threat to Ash... Everybody loved the girl.... Everybody Rook-wise anyway. But more rooks meant less food for everybody, and she would feed everybody. Bainer happened to like having a lot of food. She cawed a wordless caw, just to let Grenta know. Grenta would do something. Or nothing.
Grenta looked up with glowing eyes. "Hey. Hey Ash. New guy." she fluffed her wings out, unconcerned. What did she care about another rook in the flock? The bigger the better. Too many of the flock had been lost in the snowy journey.
Ash had managed to walk a ways. She could handle a bucket of water... usually. She supposed she may have filled it too much. It was heavy and made her hand sore. She set it down, flexing her hand. Perhaps she would try with two? She looked up. She could just make out the dark Rook among the branches. She loved rooks, if her flock wasn't evidence enough. She held out her arm. She loved to stroke their feathers, and talk to them, and feed them. The rooks loved the feeding part, and tolerated the rest. Usually. "Hello there!" she called, "Please come down?"
Grenta gave the newcomer an annoyed look. "Watch it. 'e migh' be sick or sommat." she 'whispered' to Ash.

Jackyl regarded the other male rook with a look that could turn one to ice. Though he directed the same look towards the female so it wasn't anything personal. He just didn't see why he had to act as if he was full of sunshine when he did not care much about the others. Curious as they might be. He was simply bore and wasting time while his human and Antlers finished up their business. Which yes, he was keeping an eye on their location and waiting for them to emerge.
The bigger of the three was interesting. Not a normal rook, if his instincts were anything to go by. Bigger too. Curious...
He blinked narrowed golden eyes slowly, eying the human as if he suspected mischief. She was sweet enough. Or sounded it. But that didn't mean she couldn't be annoying. Jackyl shifted his weight from foot to foot, feathers ruffling and settling. He glanced off into the distance, perking up a tad when he spotted movement from Antlers. The dark rook glanced down at the human again. Huffing, he spread his wings and took to the air, circling up and cawing once before spiraling down lazily to land on the outstretched arm, head tilting and watching the girl.
Not too far from them, Nori had spotted her rook, giving her guardian a curious look before the two headed towards Jackyl to see what he'd found.

Diyzen went from not giving a damn to not liking this newcomer at all. He puffed up and rearranged his feathers. He cawed rudely, something along the lines of HEY a*****e! BUZZ OFF
Bainer wasn't as phased by the look. Whatever. He was an outsider (for now) what did she care what he thought of her? She cricked her head upward at Diyzen with an amused chitter of Look who's talking!
Grenta gave her two a look that, in a human, would have been followed by a tired shaking of the head. Those two.
Ash smiled as the rook alighted. "You're very handsome. May I touch you?" she commented, lifting a finger of her other hand towards him gently, holding it in front of him. She would like to stroke his soft black feathers- it was hard to resist patting the strange rook. But he might not like it. Which is why she asked, of course! "Do you live here?" She had thought she had met all the birds in the area by now, but surprises happened. Pleasant surprises.
Grenta watched Jackyl like a hawk, with the sort of look that said if he bit that finger she personally would kick his feathered tail.

The one that cawed rudely received a dark glare as Jackyl sized him up. Not worth his time, in his opinion. The female at least had some sense about her! Which earned her a second, possibly more curious look. Well, she had earned a few points in her favor.
Jackyl did not trust the Large One. There was something different about her that made his feathers ruffle uneasily. As for the human girl...
He studied her carefully, tilting his head so that his golden eyes could see what she was doing. For a long moment, Jackyl didn't move. And then, slowly, he dipped his head once, shaking himself until his feathers settled. Clearly he had decided to allow her to pet him and that she was not a threat. To her second question, he considered and shook his head 'No'.

Ash smiled, stroking Jackyl's head and neck gently. He was soft, just as she had thought he would be. "Then you are from places beyond." Of course there were places beyond where she had been! She thought herself quite silly for having thought otherwise! "Did you travel far?"
Grenta ruffled her feathers somewhat, re settling them. Fine, so the newcomer wasn't pecking her hedgewitch. Didn't mean she wasn't watching him out of the corner of her eye still.
"I wish I could travel far and wide, but we already travelled for a long time. It is good to rest..." Sometimes, not even Ash knew why she rambled.

He tilted his head a little, letting her fingers stroke under his beak. His golden eyes never left her though, a part of him still wary and suspicious of a trick. But he did like getting attention every once and a while. Jackyl dipped his head once in acknowledgement. Yes, he was from places beyond. A head tilt in consideration. Not that farthest they have traveled, but a couple days travel at least. He gave a shrug, ruffling his feathers.
Nightlark was the first to spot the girl, and Feathers - his nickname for the rook. The Guardian huffed, shaking his head once and directing his chosen's attention that way. Nori patted the buck on the shoulder, giving him a small gesture to 'stay' while she approached the girl.
"Good day, little miss." She said cheerfully, giving a wave. Jackyl had seen Antlers approach, waiting until his human companion came closer before lightly grasping the girl's finger and tugging it towards Nori. Then he took wing and moved to perch on her shoulder, rubbing his cheek into her hair. His. This one was his! "I see you managed to get under this old gargoyles armor. Thanks for keeping him company."
Ever the vain creature he was, Nightlark moved closer, standing up proudly and letting Ash get a good look at him.

Ash laughed softly. Places beyond were wonderful! She had come from beyond. It had been a lovely place! And this too was beyond! And it wasn't bad at all! She was about to comment giddily when the rook directed her attention to a human. Oh? Oh! It must be the rook's human companion! "Oh... Yes it is a good... day..." Humans were human. They made her nervous, a little. She didnt get them.
Grenta scrutinized the newcomers. New people. Too many new people. The familiar was not happy about this. She checked the positions of her flock. "Hey idiot." she caught Diyzen's attention, "Go check on big guy. In case we need 'im. Can ya do that, you incompetant featherbrain?"
Diyzen made a rude sound, but took off to find where Viktor was. Nothing urgent. But Grenta made a point of making sure the big strong brother of her hedgewitch could be summoned somehow, especially when potential trouble came in the form of newcomers. It was good planning, this paranoia. The bird was right proud of herself for it.
She went back to scrutinizing the newcomers.
"Oh! no!" The human did make her nervous, but the rook liked this one and wanted her to talk to them, so she couldn't be all that bad! "He is very pleasant company!" He may have been a bit wary, but the rook was very friendly!
Oh! A deer! "You are very handsome too!" she said, approaching the guardian.
Grenta's glowing eyes snapped to the deer, and she nipped Ash's ear. Ash stopped, looking at her familiar questioningly.
"Watch it." the bird crooned, "He ain't no ordinary deer" for one thing his eyes were glowing.
"I can tell that, Grenta" Ash admonished Grenta playfully before approaching again. "May I stroke you?" she asked the guardian politely.
Grenta would have rolled her eyes. She kept an eye on the human, who Ash was nervously ignoring in favor of the deer. Grenta was a little suspicious.
Bainer, however, was bored.

The girl seemed to be a little on the timid side, something that earned a slight raise of one eyebrow from Nori. She was rather surprised that Jackyl had let himself relax enough to have this girl stroke him. Said rook nipped at a strand of her hair, tugging it gently. "I'm glad to hear it." Nori said politely, not approaching any closer. She didn't want to startle her or anything! "He did behave, right?" Jackyl huffed, making a disgruntled 'caw' sound. He was a good rook! Antlers was the obnoxious one.
A point proven - in the rook's eyes - as the stupid creature puffed up even more at Ash's compliment. Jackyl just studiously ignored him.
Nightlark's ears perked up and his tail wagged, the buck stepping towards the girl. He lowered his head towards her, careful of his antlers. A flicker of his gaze to his Chosen and back to Ash had Nori sighing with a smile. "He says yes. And wishes to know what your name might be?" Nori added in politely. Both were curious. "I'm Nori, by the way. And the vain one there, begging for attention, is Nightlark."

Ash looked back at the human, Nori apparently, with wide eyes. "No! No! He was good!" She didn't want the rook to get in trouble, especially since he had been good! Shyly, she looked back at the deer and raised a hand to gently stroke his head. "Ash, my name is Ash."
Grenta was satisfied that the human wasn't a threat for now. She turned her attention to the deer. "Tol' you, Ash. That's not an ordinary deer."
"I know he's not... And I don't think he's vain, just..." the word escaped her momentarily "Proud" She smiled up at the deer.
Grenta cawed in amusement. Vain was a better word. She left Ash's shoulder to circle the clearing for a moment before perching on the well.
This lady was surrounded by nice, handsome creatures, so Ash made up her mind and gave the human a timid smile (though she stayed near the proud and reassuring deer) "I... I live in the nearby village." she offered nervously.
Bainer noted the flockleader's movements, but otherwise was mostly amused by her human. Actually, she was hungry. She gave Grenta a signal and left to find something to stick in her beak.

Nightlark was all for the attention, lowering his head even more so she could scratch the best spots. He kept a lazy eye on her - and his chosen - but was quite the content and happy buck right then.
Jackyl just huffed, ignoring Antlers all together and quietly sitting on his person's shoulder. Though his golden eyes did regard Ash.
"Ash? It's a pleasure to meet you. I know this gargoyle here definitely appreciated it." She lightly teased Jackyl's feathers, gaining a n** to the finger and a soft caw. He ruffled his feathers, waiting for them to all settle back into place before he making some sort of noise that sounded suspiciously like a snort. Nori, on the other hand, laughed at the girl.
"Oh he's definitely a proud beast, that's for sure!" She crossed her arms lightly and shook her head at the Guardian. "But he's got a horrible vain streak in him too. Once you get started on telling him he's handsome, that's the end of it there!" Said buck pawed at the ground, giving his chosen a Look. He was not that bad! Though he was definitely a handsome buck, wasn't he? Oh yes he was!
Nori looked over Ash, and then let her gaze travel steadily around the area. The girl seemed so skittish! "Are you out here by yourself then?" There may have been a hint of concern in her voice.

"Well, I've already told him that he's handsome so..." she wasn't sure where she was going with that, and so she just smiled shyly. She did shake her head vehemently. "No-oo... Not by myself. Grenta and the others are with me." It seemed to be obvious to her, "And ma says I can go out on my own" which was true. She could. "And..." she hesitated, "You're here too. So I'm not alone..."
