User Image The day was hot, the sun was high, and Chazama was having a difficult time keeping herself settled in one place. As a youth this would have been the perfect opportunity for a mid-day nap, but the now fully grown lioness found herself unable to relax. There were many things to think about, to be excited over, and she suspected that was the reason for her current mood. With a sigh she plopped herself down under the shade, pale eyes starring off in the distance. She would have liked to expel some of this energy, but it was far too hot to hunt in the middle of the day, and the outpost was out of the question. Her ears flopped back in dismay at this thought, and though Dina was happy her daughter no longer had the opportunity to spend time with the Firekin, Chazama was not. She loved sparring! The training was enjoyable and the red giants had been nothing but accommodating in her experience. To say the least, the golden splotchy lioness was looking forward to their next migration.

Of course, she had to occupy her time some how. No longer the rebellious youth, Chazama now actively hunted with the rest of her pride sisters. It wasn't as exciting as sparring with the firekin, but it was an activity she was quickly coming to appreciate. Not that it was fun. Oh no, far from it, but it kept her occupied and she was getting better at it the more she worked at it. That was something her mother approved of, at least. With a flick of her ears in a defeated manner, Chazama once again rose to her paws, shifting her weight in an undecided manner. She had to do something before this restlessness killed her. She just didn't know what.

Surtak was more inclined to agree with Chazama's mother. The Firekin were a dusty, unruly lot. It had been good to venture away from the outpost and not have to watch the specks of the uninvited crawling over the earth like fleas. Their fighting, when they fought, was all for training.

What would they do when they had to kill? Though it was comprised of mostly females, the Ithambo'hlabathi women hunted. They killed day in, and day out. Surtak had not seen most of these lions hunt. When it came time to fell someone's life, they would hesitate. He did not have faith in their strength, but he had faith they might try and drag the Ithambo into their mess.

As much as the thought of women still made him frown, this place had very much become his home.

The thoughts of Firekin had been mostly absent to the large male lion, who rested in the shade a small distance from the others. His head was held high, and his eyes were scanning. Gakere was taking a quiet rest, and Surtak was remaining the vigilant. It would be his turn to sleep, soon.

For now, his eyes were on a gold and white female with fairly striking eyes. It was not her eyes which caught his attention, but her restless attitude.

It was beginning to grate.

"Calm, lioness," he called out to her. Surtak did not spend enough time mingling with the women to know each of their names. He knew Wodi's. He knew Ulaka's, as she was loud. "It is safe."

Had she realized a particular someone was watching her, she probably wouldn't have been so open about her restlessness. Maybe. As it happened to be, Surtak's voice did come as a surprise to her and Chazama happened to flinch at the sudden interruption. Likely also out of embarrassment for what she must have looked like. So she gave him a quick flourish of an apology- a low bob of her head, ears flicking back, and a sweep of her tail close to her paws- as she settled herself back down onto her belly to 'relax'. Not that it would be easy now after that little incident. "Sorry. Of course it is", she agreed, mentally adding: thanks to you. And Gakere, obviously, but that was a given. It was no secret to her family, Dina and her twin sister Khet, that Chazama had admired Surtak for a long while. She had spoken about him on many different occasions to her mother, and Dina in turn had shared her own opinions on the earthy umholi. Most of which Chazama hadn't agreed with.

Her eyes wandered as her thoughts went to a more familiar place, drawn to the dark shades of his mane and the light dapples that stretched across his fine hide. She hadn't meant to disturb the dark, handsome lion with the thick voice and mysterious, almost unobtainable air about him. But she did, and now she was fully aware he was within her line of sight. Chazama had always been prone to daydreaming, and though she had mostly outgrown it, there was one subject in particular she just could not shake. Young, inexperienced, and uncertain of her own feelings, there was little she could do but wonder. Had she realized she was staring, she probably would have stuck her head down a hole.

Surtak was close to sticking his dead down a hole for her. Or, perhaps he would walk over there and push his paw on her forehead until she was no longer leering at him.

The male attempted to look away. The Savannah grasses were swaying with a light wind. Surtak frowned at them. If the wind picked up too much, but did not bring rain, they would have a sandstorm to defend from. Surtak had little desire for his fur and teeth to be full of grit.

As the Umholi's eyes swung back around, he saw Chazama was still looking at him. A prickle swept down his spine. Lionesses were weird.

"Can I help you?" He tried to remain as polite as possible, as Gakere had taught him, but his voice was already deep and rumbling naturally. It was hard to keep the extra bit of confused irritation from his tone.

True, his mane wasn't as dark as Gakere's, but that was of little consequence all things considered. Dark, handsome, and mysterious. That had been the perfect recipe in her adolescence to begin noticing males.

She may have gone on with these fantasy musings, except his rumbling voice was more than enough to draw her out of it. She was about to ask what he meant, when realization struck her rather suddenly. Oh. Yipes! Embarrassment flustered her into burring her nose in her paws, and for a moment she could not meet eyes. How could she be so careless? And she hadn't answered him yet! Double-yipes! With a quickness she raised her head to assure him that, no, everything was fine, and that he should forget anything had ever happened. Unfortunately, her mind must have still been playing catch up from the earlier subject.

"I hope so", managed to slip out of her maw before she could even begin to stop it. If she hadn't looked panicked before, she certainly did now.

No longer wishing to be calling to each other loudly, where anyone might happen to hear, Chazama rose to jog closer for ease of conversing. Quiet conversing, where she hoped to put a stop to this whole fiasco. Not too close! she reminded herself. The lioness may have closed the gap a fair bit, but she was certain to come to a stop a good distance away from the Umholi before sitting back down... well out of his swatting range. She hoped.

"Umholi Surtak", she opted for the formality, hoping to regain at least some of her dignity. "I didn't, I mean... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bother you, I just like looking at you-" She shouldn't have said that. Where had that come from? She gulped, having made a perfect mess of the situation in no time flat.

(( Do you still want to continue this, Jovi? ))

Both of Surtak's brows rose on his head. What exactly she could help him with, he could only guess. Surtak did not like to guess. It was the kind of thing a dead Umholi did at a rogue that wasn't yet deemed dangerous.

It seemed he did not have to say anything, with the way she was jogging over to him. Surtak could practically feel his skin crawl with the idea of her bumping her head under his chin as some of the more forward lionesses had done. No, though, she kept her distance. Polite, respectful. There was a low rumble of approval in the back of his throat.

Then she went and said that.

Surtak made no answer at first. Instead, he took his time to survey her, really take in what she was doing. Many lionesses might have thought he was judging her potential, but he was taking in her body language, and trying to put all the pieces together.

Damn Gakere. How many children did he need? Hadn't he proven himself enough. This was a permanent job.

Surtak reminded himself to be nice. Nice enough.

"Look, then," he told her, as though it were an obvious answer. There were plenty that did without fear, many of whom who had stared when he'd first come, and felt no shame in it. It had been hard to resist the urge to rattle their skulls; he'd gotten very good at suppressing it. "You would like to join me?"

Gakere had helped him with his polite words. Words of diplomacy, of fellow respect. They were awkward on his tongue, as they did not exist in the Nergui language. Surtak motioned with his head to the spot next to her, and shifted his paw to make space for her to lay down.

((I do, just having difficulty with RL. x.X Sorry for the wait.))

He was being quiet, and that was making her shift her paws around in front of her, uncertain of how to continue. She was new to this, nervous, and awfully swayed by her idea of this particular lion. In short, she idolized him. Or, rather, the idea of him. Dark, handsome, unobtainable in most senses. He'd taken her in her dreams night after night and haunted her while awake.

These thoughts continued and Chazama's demeanor changed ever so slightly. She'd stopped shifting in his silence, and instead stood quietly, pale eyes drifting from his dark mane to the dappled coat that hid muscle and power. The moment was here, she'd said things she couldn't take back, and though the panic was still there in her mind, so was excitement. What would he say? Would she be allowed?

Yes, it seemed. He spoke and she moved as if on command. "Very much so," she replied, sounding more earnest than she probably meant to. A combination of fear of the unknown and excitement swirling around in her brain.

Chazama settled herself down next to him, lowering her belly to the ground and attempted to get comfortable. Though it felt like she would shoot up onto her paws at any given moment, the mix of energies rendering her unable to completely relax. Her tail flicked at the tip back and forth, back and forth, and Chazama finally set her eyes back onto the dark male. She was here now, there was no going back. "I've wanted this, for a long time", she told him, ears flicking back at the forwardness of the admission. It seemed her tongue had no control sometimes.

((I totally understand. Busy on this end, too. ))

The dark male's red eyes were on with every step she took. It was a confident gaze, one a young lioness might mistake for the promise of attraction.

A guttural grunt came from his throat as her body pushed into his. He leaned to the opposite side, making room for her space, before allowing himself to settle as well. His eyes went to her paws.

Oh.

He'd seen her sparring on the Firekin grounds with the red pelts. From a distance, he had been just able to make her out against the golden sand.

"Mm," he grunted. His tongue pressed into the roof of his mouth, and he debated whether or not it would be worth it to leave her here, avoid the awkwardness that was to come. In time, she'd probably appreciate it. He was no womanizer, no smooth talker, no smooth bedroom manners. It had worked for Wodi, but despite her fighting, he doubted it would work for this one.

"Did you win your last fight?" his gravelly voice spoke at last.

Her ears twisted with his voice, catching the rough sound and drinking it in. He was so different from everyone else she'd come to call family. Foreign, and yet familiar in the sense that he'd been a part of her home since her youth. A curiosity that had grown into this wild fathom of her imagination. Inexperienced as she was, she didn't quite understand the subtleties of his manner or what he might have thought of her, but it didn't really matter. Not really. Not when she was here beside him, giddy with her own thoughts and desires.

She'd almost missed his question, and was glad she had not. "I did", she told him, her maw twitching into a pleased smirk. It was a privilege to be able to train with such large, powerful lions, and Chazama was determined to take every advantage in doing so. "I've never fought before, not like that, so I enjoy the challenge and the activity." It wasn't that she wanted to become a great fighter that defeated foes and protected everyone, after all that's what the abaholi were for, but more of a personal challenge to better herself. It made her feel good, and so she did it.

Her demeanor seemed to relax, no longer feeling as though she would shoot up onto her paws at any given minute. In truth, she enjoyed talking about her experience with the Firekin. Forgetting herself, her forehead did manage to lightly bump his shoulder in a show of comfort at his presence. An act she was use to doing with her pride sisters. "I'll have them chasing their tails before they know it," she remarked rather pleasantly. On both occasions, with her spars against Big Guy and Heti, her opponents had remarked on how quickly she could get away from them. She planned on perfecting that tactic.

(( Potential wrap on my end. ))

Surtak's ears briefly went back. His eyes had returned, ever vigilant, to the scenery beyond them, but when she mentioned fighting, they momentarily glanced her direction.

It was hard work, biting his tongue. There would be a lot more fighting if the Firekin were careless. Surtak did not delight in the filleted hide he would face if the God-killers swept through the lowlands. His jaw hardened.

"They are too big for their feet," he agreed, as if he could sense the reason she had won. In reality, he had been contemplating on the advantage of his own small size.

The Umholi was on his feet, then. He cast one long, wary glance in the direction of Gakere and then shook the dust from his coat.

"Walk with me."

((Wrap for Chazama. <3 ))

She nodded, though was quick to remember how easily they had knocked her to the ground with a single swipe of their paw. Definitely the motivation she needed to keep practicing her evasion tactics. She had been fine in a spar, but dreaded to think what their claws might do if they ever caught her. Or that mouth full of teeth! Yup, keeping out of reach was a good idea!

Before she knew what was going on Surtak was up on his paws, reining in Chazama's thoughts once more. It only took that single invitation and she too was up and standing, ready to follow. Perhaps she should have said something, but the words stuck in her throat and muddled around in her mind. Maybe that was for the best.
