Cold, cold, cold. The frost on windows might have looked pretty, but they signaled a thing so loathed. The bitter, merciless cold. As Marco trudged through the town, his boots made the echo of snow crunching underfoot sound just as painful as it felt. His toes were cold, but not wet thankfully. Small blessing. Behind him, Somnium was only minding how the snow made him wet in some sense, or how a patch of ice was on a particular stone under his hooves. The guardian fared better than his chose at any rate.

Today Marco had braved the cold and chill to return the books he’d barrowed from the library. A small bit of guilt for having them so long, but snow had trapped him for a short while. While no excuse mattered, it was slightly understandable. He just hoped that no one was waiting for what he had checked out. Shuffling into said library he sneezed, followed by Somnium doing the same. At the very least, it was warmer than outside. No wind as well.

Books dug up from the traveling pack off on Somnium, the doctor went to the counter, hoping Tessa would forgive his lateness in returning the books. The novel included.

It had been much colder than usual, that was for sure. Tessa had even had to go out and buy a heavier coat then what she'd owned. Which was possibly the only normal thing she'd done since... well, since not very long after she'd seen Marco last! Her life had quite impressively flipped around. No longer was she able to live her quiet and shy life. Ooooh no. Willow would not allow it! Where Tessa was shy, her new companion was bold and curious.

And one of her favorite games was playing 'hide-n-seek' in the library. Something that was much easier to accomplish with business being so slow due to the weather. Not many people felt like making a trip to get a good book to read. Unlike Tessa, who had recently been enjoying curling up by the fire with one of her favorite reads, Willow laying beside her.

"Will, come on! I need that back." Tessa sighed, meandering through the aisles in search of the yearling. She heard a soft snort of amusement towards the Autobiographies. Changing direction, she headed that way just as she heard the door open at the front. "J-Just a minute!" She called, cursing softly and heading back towards the front. Soft footfalls clicked behind her so she knew Willow was following. Maybe.

"How can I help- Marco!" Tessa's features instantly lit up upon seeing her friend. "You're back!" Hearing the lightness to her Chosen's voice, Willow peered around a bookcase curiously, spotting the new duo that had entered. She pranced up excitedly, a notebook clamped in her mouth, eyes wide as she regarded Marco and Somnium.

It wasn’t like Tessa to sound genuinely taken aback by an arrival. Yet when she came around and smiles, Marco did the same. It was always a pleasure to see her, and from the lack of pints in the snow- “I am back, and from what I saw outside, I’m one of the few. Somnium-“ The buck was busy staring at the yearling from behind the book shelf. “Somnium what are you- ah. Well, that certainly explains your interest.” Looking to the young doe, Marco smirked.

“It seems legends have finally brought you into the fold Tessa. You went out and became part of your own story?” He was close to laughing, the thought of bookworm Tessa braving the forest for a totem. “Wouldn’t have guessed. But I digress, It’s nice to see you again. Weather’s been a bit nasty so I apologize in the delay. Somnium wouldn’t have me riding him while carrying my things as well. Me or my things. He doesn’t do both sadly.” The buck snorted, looking at Marco’s stomach before staring his chosen down. “…Somnium, if you’re insinuating I’m fat I would like to remind you who got into my tin of sugar cubes for my coffee?” At that Somnium turned his attention back to the yearling.
Bending down the guardian looked to the other eyes flicking down to the book before shaking his head. Books were not for eating, plus if you drooled on them you might get yelled at. The image of a half eaten book fluttered in Marco’s head and he couldn’t help but ask. “She hasn’t taking a liking to the taste of ink and paper has she?”

Oh she'd known Willow would appear now that they had some visitors! The young doe was a always a curious little thing. Something Tessa was having to adjust to. "Unfortunately so. Not many are brave enough to venture out in the cold just to visit a library. Which means we also have been closing early too." She gave a small, sad sigh at this. Which was replaced by flushed cheeks as she looked towards Willow.

Said doe stared at Somnium, ears perked up straight and nose wrinkling as she sniffed towards him, followed by lots of tail wagging.

"I... you could say that." She still had her moments of finding it hard to believe she really had Willow. "Me either." Tessa admitted with a sheepish smile, looking back at Marco. "It's always a pleasure seeing you, too. And don't apologize! This weather has delayed many things." Though the thought of Somnium making Marco choose between his things and himself to carry was... rather amusing. Then she couldn't stop from laughing at the pair of them, earning a canted look from Willow. Laughter was not something she heard often from her chosen!

"Her name is Willow." Tessa added, a faint feeling in her mind hinting towards an introduction. The grey yearling snickered, pawing lightly at the ground. Oh no! She wouldn't eat that! Making her chosen chase her for it was much more exciting.

"No!" She laughed, moving towards Willow to tug the notebook from her mouth. The yearling didn't fuss much about it, much more interested in their guests. "She just thinks I don't have enough excitement in my life." Which was... sadly true. "How was your trip this time around?" Tessa couldn't help but wonder if Marco had been called in to examine... bodies from the villages.

The guardian inspected the doe with a curious eye. What kind of guardian would pair up with Tessa of all people. She was Tessa, hardly they type to go do battle with wolves, more the type to write about them. Or read about them. Then again he had Marco, a snotty doctor who wasn’t suited to fighting his own paperwork. A shake, the buck looked at Marco. The doe was okay.

“Between the cold, the rumors and the disappearances, it’s hard to place just exactly is happening here in Sunderland. People are on edge, it’s just not good for anyone.” A sad shake of his head, He got busy to removing the books from the buck’s back, working at the makeshift saddlebags. It was a bit difficult, Somnium shuffling side to side just to tease him a bit. “Stop moving you-“ A groan as Somnium gave a small jump, nearly hitting Marco. “Bah, Bloody buck.” Said buck just looked to Willow as if saying ‘you could do this too you know.’

“Willow though? Cute name. good thing she’s not taken to chewing on your book though. I imagine you’re end up heartbroken. You treat them like your children almost.” A playful smile, he finally go the books free. They looked no worse for wear, with the exception of one medical journal that was hald filled with slips of paper, page markers. “My travels have been fine, though doubtless not as exciting you’re your trip to find this little one. Haven’t seen any of those supposed wolves about however. I’ve been called to a few places, asked to see if people might be contracting some mental illness that prompts them to leave their homes and ‘vanish’. It’s the most curious thing really.” Seting the books down he sighed.

“There is nothing connecting them, and from everything I hear they were all sane, healthy individuals. Well, almost all of them. A few were troubled, but nothing adds up really. With noe bodies either, I have nothing to look at after the fact.” A doctor’s dilemma.

Staring back at the larger buck, the yearling walked circles around him, looking at how tall he was and the curious things along his back. Oh hey, what were those things? They had books in them! Like what her Tessa always read. Once she made a full circle (or three) around Somnium, Willow stopped beside him, looking over her shoulder Marco as well. She liked this buck! He was good.

Tessa set her notebook back against the desk, seeking out her book of records. "No, it's not. And this cold... it's been harsher than usual, hasn't it?" She glanced at her friend as he attempted to get the books from Somnium. It was hard not to laugh at the sight of them. And Willow just thought it was the most amusing game she'd been introduced to yet! "Will, I don't think you're helping." She sighed, cheeks turning a little pink as the pale doe tried jumping like Somnium had... almost hitting Marco as well.

"It just... suited her." Tessa said softly, giving the guardian a fond look. "Oh gosh, I would not even know what to do if she had taken a liking to them! I can't scold her! Look at her!" She said with a rare groan to her voice. Of course, with the attention on her, Willow gave the cutest face possible. Lookit that! Could you say no to a face like that?!

Her cheeks flushed again, a glance directed towards Willow before she pulled out a pen to check each book back in. "I-I can definitely claim things have been... different. Though surely traveling was more exciting then trekking through the snow into the woods with no idea what you were doing!" And sure as heck less scary, no doubt. A part of her seemed to relax knowing that her friend had not run into any wolves. "Really? I guess I never considered that people might say they had an illness. Traumatized from seeing their village destroyed, yes." Strange how the little bookworm could talk about bloodshed without grimacing.

Willow meeped at Somnium, butting her nose into his leg before darting off between the bookshelves. Just how swift and agile was he?! "Willow! Don't knock any bookcases down!" Shaking her head, she offered the book for Marco to sign once again. "Would you be able to find answers if you saw one of the bodies?" She asked him curiously.

It was amusing to watch the doe examine Somnium as he was. Or it was amusing until she began to mimic him and almost bump into Marco. That part Marco could have done without. “The cold’s been harsh but no harsher then the winter harvests. Heard talk that in the south things are looking sparse. But, this was also coming from a man who I know tends to sell more than he can afford. Not to mention that in the far south the talk of wolves is not as immediate of a threat.” A glance outside to the falling snow and he shook his head. “So long as we don’t get snowed in here we should be fine.” A small smile formed on Marco’s face as he looked to the doe. “Worst comes to worse I hear vension isn’t that bad.” He chuckled to himself even as Somnium snorted and stamped his hoof.

“Oh come now, you know I have no taste for that. Too gamey.” Somnium still huffed. “Yes I’m terrible. But Tessa, no matter how cute she looks, if she’s anything like Somnium was, she’ll wrap you around her finge- er, hoof. Dang buck would act innocent even after he ate up my herb garden.” The pair exchanged looks. It was an ongoing issue between them.

“People want science to give them an answer, sadly I can’t find one to provide.” At the nose bump, Somnium puffed, darting after Willow, just slightly avoiding his antlers hitting a few shelves. “…..Yes well.” Marco would just have to throw Somnium outside if he made a mess. “If I saw one of the bodies I could find the cause of death perhaps, but without something like fur, proper pints- it’s more the skill of a tracker for that part to know if it was wolf. The most I could do was say what killed the person and if I’m lucky, when they died.” Somnium was just busy chasing after Willow to mind the words of his chosen.

There was a sound much like a squeak that escaped Tessa as her cheeks got incredibly bright. Oh she would have just felt so horrible if Willow had hit Marco! She could feel amusement that was not her own, determining that it was coming from her guardian. "I guess that is true, though I'm not familiar with what the harvest has to go through. It's just so cold!" Tessa rubbed her arm absently, glancing towards the two guardians and feeling her lips curl up. "I dearly hope we don't get snowed in! I'd really rather not add venison to my diet." She paused, smiling a little slyly. "At least not yet." She teased, getting an offended look from Willow.

Willow made a soft sound that was suspiciously like a giggle as Somnium huffed. Oh his Chosen was funny!

"Oh I am already learning that one." Tessa said with a shake of her head. "She is quite fond of a couple pillows off my bed. And just has this ridiculous look she can give me... I can't help but cave in!" And come one, she really was cute when playing like that.

Putting the books on the counter to put away later, Tessa glanced towards the old clock behind the desk. "I don't know if, at this point, it would make a difference to have that answer. People are still going to panic one way or the other." With a sigh, she moved around to duck behind the front desk, gathering a small bag and coat and keyring. "How long are you and Somnium in town?" She asked, making a few closing notes for tomorrow. Willow skidded around a shelf, bleating as she bumped into it before scampering away and trying to stay juuust out of reach of the buck!

Marco shrugged, idly picking at a loose thread on his coat. His recent travels had been wearing down faster than normal. Not to mention with the cold he’d been using it almost daily going to and from places. Such a small thing showed the simple signs of how Marco had become a little more outgoing in recent months. “I’ve seen mothers panic over a small cut over their child’s knees that didn’t even break skin. Seen grown men fear they might have gotten something from spending too much time in the fields and not wanting to eat what they have grown. Children thinking one another has cooties.” He shook his head with a smile to the thought of cooties. “People fear strange things at times. Suppose even if they did have their answer some might get riled, but I know it would put a few minds at easy. Notably in the nobility. They’d rather not have to answer for missing civilians.”

His own brother was doing his best, but the man had no way to fight what he couldn’t see. Not to mention he hardly was known to be the more prepared. “But even if there are people scared witless, they will need my services. I’m staying just at the city edge tending to those coming and going for the next few days while some of my supplies come in.” A clatter of hooves drew the chosen’s eye to the shelves, Somnium popping into sight looking around. Wilow had lost him, and now the guardian was in his own way, asking the pair if they had seen the fawn.

It was a sad truth, and she could understand that. No matter what anyone did, there was going to be panic. The level of that panic would vary. Some could be dangerous in their fear. And Tessa had to admit, she really hadn't thought much on just how dangerous they could be. Though thinking on it now, all she could really conclude was that she'd just have to be careful. "The Nobles could probably keep some of the wide spread panic under some control if the truth was what we all feared." She noted, shaking her head. "But it does no one any good just worrying and fretting." Maybe that was why she seemed to lack proper fear of the possibility that the wolves were back?

An irritated and mildly concerned mix of emotions flittered through her, making the librarian pause and look towards the shelves as Somnium popped out from around one. "Try looking that-" Tessa didn't get to finish as Willow came trotting up right behind the larger buck, tugging at his tail and darting away towards her chosen. She did not like the glum thoughts that her chosen was having! Bumping her nose against Tessa, the yearling nuzzled her before prancing around and stopping near the entrance.

"Apparently, it is time for me to close up. Perhaps, if you and Somnium don't have any plans, you'd like to join us?" She asked, slipping her coat on. "I... well, I had thought about going to make an offering... " Probably something, now that she thought on it, was not the safest thing for her to do alone. Willow agreed, snorting and stamping a foot.

Marco snorted at the idea nobles keeping panic under some control in the event the worst would become truth, become reality. “Not likely. In small groups yes. My brother for instance, he might control a portion of the common people but what of the traders? The merchants and traveling physicians like myself. We carry words with us and as much as I hate to admit it, we talk freely. Secrets that large don’t stay secret. One might even speculate that without solving this mystery, word might reach other nations who would use the opportunity to start a war.” Not likely, but one never knew. Somnium heard it all however, and stamped a hoof to remind Marco that morbid talk was hardly pleasant.

“…I tend to mull over such things too deeply.” A sudden flash of indignation and secret amusement from Somnium, he looked back to the buck, just seeing the tail end of Willow’s antics upon him. Antics that for better or worse, had left him with a favorable impression. At the idea that they had to leave he smiled a bit, Somnium approaching, ears flicking at the mention of joining Tessa and Willow.
“Somnium has taken a small shine to Willow and seems to think that as brilliant idea.” Half truth, Somnium just thought it might be nice and Willow was rather spirited. The buck shook his head with a huff, amused by Marco’s masking of his own thoughts.

“I haven’t made an offering in a long time. It would be.. nice.” Somnium rolled his eyes, giving Marco a small shove. He’d like it, the buck knew he would.

Another frown formed as she considered what Marco said. Perhaps he was right. And it showed how much her lack understanding the social networks and how much power the Nobles really possessed. Though she felt confident in her belief that their Queen was a strong woman of power. "Then I suspect those of us that are located more on the outskirts of town probably will find the panic being worse than those deeper within Palisade." The dark haired girl murmured. Tessa faintly noted to herself that she ought to check on her mother.

Absently, Tessa rubbed at one of her arms, in an almost nervous gesture. If a war of any nature started, would she be pulled into it just for having Willow? "I do hope things become less confusing and mysterious soon." Like one of those mystery novels she enjoyed reading so much. That thought had her lips curling into a smile. As did Marco's admittance. "I'm afraid I am guilty of this as well." She said with a hint of amusement. And then was unable to help but giggle a little at her guardian.

"I wish I could claim that she only acts like this because she is young." Tessa sighed, smiling up at Marco. "But I have a feeling that... I am wrong in assuming that." Willow just pawed towards the door, giving them all an impatient look. "Well she seems to enjoy being around you too, Somnium." Tessa said with a real smile, feeling only slightly bad for the buck. Willow did indeed have a lot of spirit in her small body.

"Then you should come with us! I... haven't made an offering since... Gran died." She admitted a little softer. And then jumped slightly when Willow banged a foot against the door. "Alright! We're coming. Just let me lock up, okay?

He felt a bit bad to be so negative around Tessa, but at the same time, he didn't candy coat things. He tried not to at any rate. Besides, better he be honest than lie. "If you ever want to find someplace safe, my brother would take you in. He's a good man if... well. He's my brother. That ads a bit of bias to my opinion now doesn't it?" He tried to smile, but it was small and half hearted.

"Things will get better. Humans, well, we are a rather resilient sort. We will grow and adapt just as animals do. Only better of course." He looked at Somnium, who had already vanished outside.

Willow will adapt and mature with age. All creatures do. To what level..." He paused, feeling Somnium's amusement. "Well that depends. Maybe she'll take over what few qualities that are good in Somnium." The buck might have been outside, but he could certainly hear Marco, hoof hitting a wall, followed by the sound of snow hitting the ground. The buck's head peeked back in, lightly covered with snow.

Marco didn't say, anything, only let a small chuckle escape.

"Let's go make an offering." He wasn't quite sure what words of comfort to offer her, only placing a hand on her shoulder and giving a light squeeze. "After perhaps, we can get some warm cider from a nearby vendor. They're always around, even in this weather and with the rumors out." He smiled as best he could. "I'll wait for you outside." Inside Marco sighed.
He just was that terrible at comforting others.

Startled by the offer, Tessa didn't know quite what to say in response. She just stared at Marco with a bit of confusion but... something like appreciation in her gaze. It took her a moment to formulate a response - and that was only after Willow urged her to do so - to him. "I... that's very kind of you. And I will keep it in mind. I feel that I'm alright at home for now." Tessa smiled almost shyly. Really, she did appreciate the offer. And Marco was the first to ever make such before.

Awkward, the girl was awkward. And Willow just huffed, rolling her eyes. She would break her Chosen of this 'bad habit' as she viewed it.

She laughed at that, covering her mouth lightly with the back of her hand as Somnium peeked in. Tessa could feel Willow's utter amusement out of this outside. The yearling had danced back when the snow fell and made that giggling noise at the buck. He was so funny! She pawed at the snow on the ground, as if trying to figure out how to make it fall on Somnium again. "You're right. Though I do hope they get better sooner rather than later." Tessa threw over her shoulder, gathering up all she needed and turning the lights down.

"I do hope she matures a little more. I don't think I can handle this behavior when she's full grown!" Tessa groaned, shaking her head at the excitement radiating off her guardian. The girl paused, looking up at her friend as a hand was placed on her shoulder. "That sounds very nice." She said with a soft, tiny smile, nodding and flicking off the rest of the lights before joining them all outside and locking the doors.

Turning to the others, Tessa gave a nod. She was ready. "Let's go make our offerings." In response, Willow dashed away in the snow, running at full speed before hitting on the breaks and skidding through the soft white flakes. That was fun! Tessa just shook her head.

He didn't see it as kindness, despite Somnium's mental protests that yes, it was a kind gesture. The doctor saw it as practical and helpful. Somnium just though Marco was being a reluctant softy, and sadly, deep down Marco was pretty sure the buck knew his best and was telling him the truth. Brushing off some snow from Somnium's head, Marco waited briefly. Willow got a small smile as the buck was quick to kick up a bit of snow in the fawn's direction. It was good to simply see the guardian enjoying himself, cold or no.

patting Somnium on the flank, Marco paused. "You can ride him if you want." Somnium gave a blank look to Marco. He could ask before offering, after all, a Guardian wasn't a horse or a mule. Marco brushed it off. "Eventually you should be able to ride Willow if she'll let you. Not that much different than riding a horse really." Willow darting off had the chosen smiling. "she she doesn't let you ride before running off one day. Somnium's done that when he gets a bit excited." A snort to deny the buck trot forward.

"........Somnium please." The buck lazily turned his head around before continuing on. "Stubborn, but... Hrm. Now that I think on it I'm not quite sure my offering will suffice. It never quite feels like it does." The bane of pessimism, or just his lack of faith. "Perhaps I sould be like my brother. Offer something gaudy and ornate."
