Firebrand had a deep secret that he kept from the world. He was a thief. Not the careless kind that would be caught, or steal petty things that contained no meaning for him. His borrowed treasures were spread throughout the area to assure if they were found, he didn't lose the whole lot. Anyone could be a victim of his pleasures at any time. The only exception to the rule was family. He had no need to subject blood to his desires.

A cold wind swept over the stallion, playing with the wisps on his legs that seemed to whip around like fire. It was a trait known to his kin. Since he had reached adult hood, he had not seen much of his family. It didn't mean that he didn't think about them. For him, blood ran deeper than anything. Tonight he had lain aside the need to steal and headed back towards the land which his family roamed. He had never wondered too far, so finding his way back was easy.

Lifting his head, he scanned the area with his bright blue ever watchful eyes. A thief was always on his guard.

A stiff, icy breeze pushed through the wooded area, winding its way through the bare trees, and into the mares body. She blinked, once, twice, her wings trembling a little and then stilling, her gaze still fixed on the part of the clearing she could see from where she was hidden.

Her steady stare was targetted on a young deer, grown out of its baby pelt but not old enough to have seen a winter, and so foolish. It must have strayed away from its herd in search of food. Shinoma delicately licked the point of one of her thin fangs, and narrowed her eyes, muscles bunching as she prepared to attack. A jump, a swift gallop to cross the distance, a sweep of one talon-tipped wing and a grab at the neck ended it all for the deer, and she waited for it to breath its last, jaw clamped around its throat.

When it had died, she released her grip, wiggling her lower jaw to regain the feeling and then began dragging it what was classed as home, she would eat some and larder store the rest. Winter made one frugal with food, and it would do no good for her nor her family members to turn their noses up at carrion.

Shinoma had just entered the family territory when she caught a scent, and she walked slower, on guard until she actually saw that it was one of her sons. She stashed the deer carcass under some snow and turned to face him, seeing that he seemed strong and whole she smiled; her affection was great for those of her family that hadn't sullied its name.

'Hello Firebrand, come to see your old mother have you?'

The smell of another tickled his senses as the breeze brought it to him. It was a scent he could not forget. At least he hoped that he was right, and his mother was nearby. If he saw no one else while here, he would be content. The love of a son for his mother was stronger than that of his love for his father. It worked that way most of the time. Daughters tended to love their fathers more.

His eyes lifted, and his mouth spread. He was smiling at the sight of his mother standing close by, calling out to him with a voice he had known since he lay in her womb. it soothed his soul, and warmed his heart.

"Hello Mother." he said in response as he closed the distance between them. A bit of blood was dry upon his mothers face. The sight did not phase him. Firebrand was brought up on meat, but could also stomach vegetation. He had no preference over the two. A stolen meal had the best taste. However, this had occurred only once. He had actually felt guilty for stealing ones means for survival, and hadn't done it again since.

Leaning in, he licked a lone spot of blood on her cheek twice then stood back. It was an affectionate, but playful lick that could only come from a mothers child. "I figured I was long over due to come pay a visit." He stood back and grinned. "Did you miss me?" he played, smirking at her with a very boyish look. Even though he had a dark appearance, he still expressed happiness well.

Of her children, Shinoma did favour her sons more. Her daughters were expected to mate well, and as to one of them..well, the thought of that turncoat made her tail flick and so she banished the thoughts from her mind, concentrating on one of boys - who she would allow to have fun, so long as it wasn't at the expense of the family line.

'Endlessly.' she said, sweeping a wing around, and patting the side of Firebrand's shoulder with it, mindful of doing him damage with the talon. The wing was swept back and then refolded, and she took the opportunity to check him over again, making sure he was as she first thought - strong and healthy.

'How have you been doing?' she asked, her tail lazily flicking now, the tendrils sweeping the ground as it did so. If anyone but Firestorm or her children had attempted such affection, or invaded her personal space they would be on the floor twitching. She had warmth in her heart enough for those who merited it in her eyes.

Firebrand wondered where the rest of his family was. His father had to be around somewhere. It would be nice to say hello to him too. Perhaps he could stick around for a few days, for a light visit. He wouldn't over stay his welcome though. He was a grown stallion, and didn't want to impose on the time his parents now had to themselves once again.

"I've been taking care of myself. You raised me well." he said as he turned to look to the side, then back at his mother. He had no girlfriend to report of, or any friends. Neither were something he had thought much of. As a stallion, he still had his urges, but the mares he had met had not been those worthy of a tell to his mother.

"How are you and father getting along?" he said with a raised eyebrow, turning to preen an uncomfortable feather from his right wing, then turning his gaze back to Shinoma.

'I hope you have been taking care of yourself, you have the good genes to do so.' Shinoma said, with a chuckle, her tail tendrils still moving, they rarely ceased doing so.

'Nothing to tell? What have you been doing with yourself out in the world then?' the mare asked. She was in no great rush to be a grandmother, but on the other hoof, expanding the herd with strong, fierce genes was everything.

'Why do you ask? Has he said something?' she said, slightly nettled by the question. She hadn't seen him recently but then they didn't live in each other's shadows and she had felt secure in his affections until her son had phrased the question in that way.

"Keeping to myself mostly. I've not met anyone in which to spend my time with. I have been and met some of the adjacent herds. They seem too busy, and sometimes full of themselves." he shrugged, then grinned thinking of how delightful it was to take from those types of soq. "None of them have been worthy of my time." he smirked. Worthy of his thievery though!

"I ask, because I haven't seen him yet, nothing more." he said casually. He was just trying to keep the conversation going. "Is he around? I'd like to pay my respects to him also."

The smell of her kill wafted over him. Odd that he hadn't smelt it already! "Oh, am I interrupting your dinner?"

She relaxed, mollified by his words and explanation as to why he had asked, feeling faintly annoyed with herself for being foolish, her tail tendrils twitching against the ground. Still, he was her son and if he showed any sign of mocking her she would just show him that she was still stronger than him.

Not that she wanted to do that..but she was his mother.

'There are so few that are worth the time.' Shinoma replied, giving a little nod.
'And so many inferior of our kind.'

Of course she knew that true Kalona tended to mate only with their own kind, with purebloods, but she knew that was elitist nonsense. Provided that your mate was strong and healthy and of a similar mindset there was no reason you couldn't mix bloodlines, and although two Kalonas might have children that was all as fierce and bloodthirstsy as themselves, she knew that sometimes sanity was an issue.

'I'm sure your father is around somewhere.' she said, and then gave a short nod.
'In a way, but it can wait. It sits under the snow, it'll keep. Or, are you hungry and come to rob your mother's larder?' she chuckled.

He didn't know much about purebloods, halfbloods, or the like. Firebrand knew that it was important to keep his bloodline strong. Only a mate worthy in his parents eyes, would be worthy to him also. If they weren't worthy, then they could be disposed of for all he cared. Maybe when it came time for such things, he could ask for his mother to help him find a suitable mate. If there was a prize mare he could steal away from another stallion, that would make it worth it to him. All this thought about mates...he didn't want to be bothered further. He pushed it off and thought not of it again for this moment.

Listening to his mothers response about him robbing the kill from her, he hesitated. A smirk grew across his face, and his brow lifted. "Stealing from you would not bring me any pleasure, though, I'd like to see someone try to steal from you. As if you'd let them?" he chuckled, then thought further on the matter. "Or, perhaps you'd lay in wait, letting them steal from you, only to further punish them after the dead was done? I mean, deed was done. Though, dead might be an appropriate word too." he flared his nostrils, pleased with the idea of such a game. Really, he didn't know what his mother would do, though he knew it would not be a kind reaction.

If Shinoma could hear her son's thoughts on mating she would have been pleased. If whoever he wound up with gained her approval; be it through her bloodline or by her deeds - after all, Firestorm was far away from being a Kalona but in her eyes he was superior to any Kalona males she had met.

'My favoured children are the only ones who I would suffer to do so..but I would imagine that what you need you are capable of getting.' she said, chuckling in return.

'Would I let them? Maybe..the hunt, the stalking of your prey. It's all part of the pleasure for me. Knowing that they suffered in fear in their last moments, before I snuffed out their short life.' she let out a sigh at the thought.

'But you didn't answer my question? Is my son hungry?'

Firebrand shifted a hoof, then raised his head up in a display of pride. His mother was a bad a**, and he loved it. Shinoma delighted at the thought of terrorizing her prey, and her son delighted at the thought of her doing so. He hadn't killed anyone yet, though he imagined he would do so to steal the perfect treasure. He didn't lust for blood, but didn't mind watching others shed it. He was a neutral-evil, if anything.

He leaned into his left wing, and smoothed down a rogue feather that had been misplaced, and increasingly annoying him. Turning back to his mother, he shrugged. "I could eat." he said casually. It would save him having to look for food when he actually was hungry. He wouldn't turn down sharing a meal with his mum. "Whatcha got for us?" he mused playfully, with that smirk of his. He wouldn't rob her of a meal, but she had asked twice. At least she didn't give him a good thump in the head for not answering her the first time!

Shinoma had never actually questioned her son as to whether he had lost his blood innocence yet; it was enough in her eyes that strong, and loyal to his family. One day though she hoped he would, as she felt it was an experience he should have, to know a creature's death, to see the life fade from another's eyes.

'Venison..' she said softly, leading Firebrand to where she had stashed the corpse, pulling it out by clamping a jaw around one spindly leg, tugging and dragging the glassy eyed body out and laying it on the ground between them.

There wasn't much meat really now that she regarded the deer's body again, but enough to be shared, and she could go days without eating.

'Tuck in if you wish.' she said, after using her large horn to carve a line in the belly. She wiped the gore off her horn on the grass and winked at her son.

'But quickly..or it'll all be gone.'

"Mmmmm." Firebrand felt his stomach begin to churn at the thought of being fed. His mouth grew moist and warm. "It looks delicious." he grinned at his mother and swallowed.

He crouched down, tucking in his legs at the backside of their dinner. He didn't hesitate at his mothers words. Reaching in, he gripped the skin above the ribs, and began to jerk it back with his teeth. The motion was done with mild precision. He had been taught well, but might of been a little rusty.

After the muscle above the ribcage was exposed, he began to tear off chunks. The flank was also a good choice, but he figured the bulk of the meat should be Shinoma's. The ribs were always a tasty alternative.

Having gnawed at a good portion of the ribs, he held a rib in his mouth, then jerked back to snap it from the sternum, while holding the deer still with one hoof. "You should have the heart." he grinned at his mother, wiping his mouth with his tongue.

Shinoma watched her son eat, enjoying that there was no hesitation to his actions, getting as much enjoyment watching him eat heartily as if she was eating the deer herself.

She took a moment as he continued to eat to spread one wing, sweeping it around and scratching at an itch behind her ear with one of the talons that tipped her wings.

'Well thank you.' she said with a smile.
'You are good to your old mother. But I will eat later. Come, walk with me.' she said, turning from the dismembered carcass, and waiting for her son to take his place at her side.
