Still being a foalEri trotted to the spot where he hoped, well more than hoped Aruhe would be waiting for him. Tonight was finally the night, and how he'd begged and pleaded to be allowed to go. He was pretty sure that no foal had been more obnoxious than he had been to his mother to get permission for tonight. She'd reluctantly agreed though, after much harassment. Eri was feeling rather proud of himself for getting permission, even though he probably would have slipped away after dark if she hadn't agreed, he didn't want to lie to Aruhe.
His little heart skipped a beat at the thought of the older mare. She was so...well he didn't have words to describe her. If he'd known what a crush was he'd have argued against having one like all males do, but having such limited experience in matters of love and affection, he wore his feelings on his hoof so to speak.
He stopped by a hole in a tree and pulled out a little leaf wrapped bundle. He wasn't sure if it was proper or not, but he'd felt like he needed a gift for being taken to such a special place to Aruhe's family. Inside was a shiny smooth stone that looked a bit like the moon to him that he'd found in a stream bed. He hoped she'd like it. After making sure the little bundle was secure he picked up the pace. He didn't want to be late after all for his date.

Aruhe looked over the area making sure she hadn't forgotten anything. She seemed a little giddy as if she were a foal again. Tonight was the night she was showing Eri her secret place. He had gotten permission from his mother and she had been getting things ready all afternoon as more snow gathered on the ground. She had set out a blanket for them to sit on and be a little warmer when the stars started to come out. It had just truly gotten dark when she trotted off to meet her friend, she felt her face flush a bit for some reason but didnt let it slow her down.
It ended up being the perfect night to look at the stars, it had snowed almost non-stop the past few days but now the skies were clear and if anything the flowers seemed to add magic to the area with the collected frost and snow twinkling reflecting the sky's magic in a way. Her hooves made very little sound as she moved through the trees and the snow compressing under hooves. Finally her glowing eyes spotted him, Eri was near where they had first met and he seemed excited and it made her heart skip a beat as she smiled brightly as she came to stand in front of him.
"I hope you haven't been waiting long, I wanted to make sure everything was just right for your first time seeing my special place....well now it will be our special place. I cant wait for you to see all the flowers and the stars....they are starting to wake-up it seems.", she smiled down at him, but seemed to not have to look 'down' as much as last time. She gave him a playful smile and nudged his cheek, "Have you grown? You seem taller, you are becoming such a handsome young stallion."

Eri jumped a bit as she came up. He'd been so busy thinking about a proper way to present his present that he hadn't noticed her coming up. He dropped his little bundle in his rush to answer her and fumbled trying to decide if he should pick it up first or not. He finally realized he couldn't very well answer her question if he had something in his mouth and shook his head. "Not long at all. I just got here." he said.
He blinked in shock that she was willing to think of her special place as theirs. He'd never had anywhere overly special to him, except this meeting spot. He had several hiding places like the hole in the tree where he kept little trinkets he found, but never a whole place. "I can't wait either!" he said excitedly. "I've been waiting and waiting all day. I think Mother was gonna go nuts if it hadn't started getting dark and I could leave." he grinned.
He blushed when she nudged him and he did have to say that he didn't have to look up quite as far. He looked around for a way to judge his height and saw the marks on the tree from where he'd lodged his blades the first time he'd met Aruhe. He moved a bit to stand in front of the tree and then extended one wing out towards the tree slowly. Yes, he definitely had a slightly higher reach than when he'd gotten stuck. He absently retracted the wing tucking it against his body, now almost a casual move instead of the jerky motions previous, he had been practicing, and looked over at her with a nod. "So it would seem!" he blushed harder and then quickly added. "And you're even prettier, than last time too." he squeaked in embarrassment at having said that, then remembered the bundle and quickly retrieved it from around her feet and offered it to her changing the subject. "For you!" he managed around closed teeth.

She raised a brow when she saw him drop something so he could talk and just smiled softly at him. She smiled even bigger at his enthusiasm and giggled a bit knowing how much she had been waiting in anticipation all day, her mother hadn't know what to do the way she had been zooming about all day. "My mother didnt know what to do about me going all about to get things ready. In the end all she could do was laugh and not get run over.", she said with a laugh thinking back to earlier in the day.
She smiled and shook her head lightly when she commented on him growing and him going to the tree that she helped him out of..."That little tree....if not for it and your beautiful wings we never would've met, and Im so glad we did. You will be a treasure in anyone's eyes and when you grow I dont see how anyone couldnt be proud to have you in their lives. You are very special.", she said whole-heartedly. Her face flushed a bit when she realized what she was saying and the sappy cliche of it so she shook her head and noticed again what he had dropped earlier. He said it was for her and commented on her being pretty making her blush even more. "For me? Thank you that is extremely sweet but you really didnt have to. I dont have anything for you other then my thanks. What is it?", she asked finally as she started to open it bouncing on her hooves slightly.

Eri's heart skipped a beat when she said he was special. He was about to blurt out that he wanted to be special for her and only her, but thought better of it and held his tongue. "Best day ever for me really." he said nodding about the tree.
He shuffled and looked at his hooves. "Well I thought that it would be nice to bring you something, since you're taking me to a special place and you don't have too, so I wanted to show you how much it meant to me." he said glancing up at her. "It took me forever to find the right thing. I didn't want to give you just any old thing." he said biting his lip as she pulled back the last leaf revealing the moon like stone.
He gasped slightly as it shone slightly in the light from her hooves. It really did look like the moon now, at least to him anyway. "I...I thought, maybe...It would look nice with the other trinkets on your tail." he said blushing and hoping she'd like it.

She gasped as she opened the gift and saw the glimmering stone as it had a slight added shine next to her unique glowing hooves. She was at a loss for words for several minutes but she finally was able to form words again. "Oh my...Eri..its beautiful, thank you so much. Ill cherish it forever." She then looked at her tail and the shell and star that hung gracefully and then she looked to the sky and back down at Eri. "This will go perfectly and it looks just like the moon. Ill have my mother and brother help string it and tie to my tail. Ill keep it safe till then.", she said bending down. She picked up the stone and lightly swung her hair around and carefully and slightly awkwardly tucked it in the tight end near the tie where it wouldnt be able to fall out. She let her hair go and smiled back at Eri, "There safe and sound. I really cant thank you enough, Im glad to call you my friend and I feel honored as well."
She looked to the sky and the stars twinkled as she smiled at them, "The stars are in full view and ready to meet a new friend. Are you ready? It isnt that far so stick close to me Eri and be ready for the most beautiful sight ever." She bounced on her hooves as she started to lead the way through the trees. She couldn't wait to see the look on his face.

Eri shuffled his hooves and then smiled up at her. "I'm glad you like it." he said. He watched her twist the stone into her hair. He blushed at what she said. "You're welcome, Aru. I feel real lucky to have someone like you around too."
When she looked up, he couldn't help but look up as well wondering what exactly she was looking for, but then realized she was just checking to see if it was dark enough yet. "I will!" he said eagerly. "I'm ready." and stumbled a bit as he got a bit ahead of himself in his eagerness to follow her. He cleared his throat and tried to act as if nothing had happened as he trotted up to her side.
It wasn't long before they broke into the clearing and Eri blinked at the sudden brightness of the field, compared to the darkness under the trees. "Oooh..." he gasped as he looked over the field of flowers that glowed in the night. His head quickly jerked up and down as he looked at the open sky above and the field below. "It's like being in the sky!" he said breathlessly, taking a few steps out into the flowers, careful not to crush any under hoof.

Aru smiled as she lead her friend to the clearing, she felt like she was a foal giddy with excitement. She couldn't wait to see the look or Eri's face when he saw it, she couldn't help but beam brightly at the thought and mental image she knew would soon be a reality.
When they entered the clearing she stopped after Eri was a few steps in front of her. The clearing was brimming with the stars reflective magic, even more so then when she had left to meet Eri. She looked down and watched his reaction grow on his face as he saw the beauty of the stars all around them. She couldn't help but get lost in the stars and their beauty. There was no moon to help light the sky but tonight the stars danced ferociously, they seemed excited to meet a new friend.
Aru watched Eri dart his gaze all over the place in wonderment and she giggled a bit happy to see he was happy. She nodded in agreement at his comment and smiled brightly in response. "Indeed it is like being in the sky. I dont mind being unable to fly on nights like this in a place like this. The stars seem to reach down, their dancing light like hands lifting up the earth bringing it into a magical embrace. Im glad your happy and like it. You can come here anytime, if you wish to find me your best bet is to come here. Perhaps you'll be able to meet my mother or maybe my brother next time. I have a feeling you and Kohaku would be good friends."
She continued to smile as Eri walked forward careful not to step on any of the flowers. Aruhe followed suit, her light foot falls seeming to hoover over the flowers as she walked. "If you have any questions about the constellations or flowers dont hesitate to ask. I am still learning more about them myself but Ill answer what I can."

Eri looked over his shoulder to smile at Aruhe. "I'd spend all the time here if I could!" he said with a nod. The thought of meeting her family though gave him pause and he took a few steps back to come along side the mare. "Do you think they'll like me?" he asked quietly, uncertainty eating him up inside. He tried to push it down, but it nagged at the back of his mind. "I would like them to like me..." he said. He couldn't help but think that they'd think he was some sort of monster and make it so that he could never see Aruhe again. She was probably the only good thing in his life and he didn't want her taken away.
He shook his head and cleared his thoughts. They'd like him. They just had too, and he'd make sure they did no matter what it took. Feeling more settled he turned his attention to the sky again and looked around. He felt instantly more at peace and the eagerness he'd felt earlier began to resurface. "So...where's the one I'm named after?" he asked.

"I spend most of my time here, itll be nice to be able to share it with someone other then my brother and mother, but they dont come as often as they did when I was a foal.", she with a smile happy for his enthusiasm. "I know they would love you Ill have to have you meet them soon. You are actually like my brother in some ways, he's rather tall though, but but my mother is taller too, I seem to have the shorter gene." she added with a chuckle. It was true her mother and brother were taller then normal where she seemed more normal like her dad though he wasn't exactly short either.
She smiled and looked to the stars only looking back to him when he asked of the constellation with which he shared his name, or it shared it's name with him. She focused and looked around and finally her eyes widened some as she bent down slightly to him. "There, just to the south west there it is. Its a large river and is one of the largest constellations I have seen. Can you see it, the river? Its hard to make out but if you look hard enough its there.", she said nodding her muzzle in the right direction careful of her horn, her eyes seeming to glow even brighter.

"Everybody's tall compared to me." He said with a playful smile. He wondered briefly if he'd be taller than her. He knew it was possible that he could end up short. His mother average in the height department, and not knowing who his father was make things more difficult to judge, especially if his father had been a flutter. He understood from his mother they could be really short. That was a rather bleak prospect really, spending the rest of his life as a dwarf, but on the upside considering how much he'd grown recently and the marks on the tree from earlier there was a good chance he'd end up, well not huge, but maybe a bit taller than Aru, and that seemed good enough in his mind.
Eri watched her look around and picked out shapes he himself could see in the sky while she looked for the original Eridanus. He wasn't sure if he was actually seeing constellations or just making up things as he looked around, but he figured that's what the people who'd made up the constellations had done anyway so he had ever right to make up his own. He'd just correct them later so not to seem silly.
He looked over as she finally bent down to him and picked out where the river was. He frowned slightly as he concentrated trying to see it. "I'm...no...maybe..." he moved slightly brushing against the unicorn and sighting along her horn. "Oh there it is." he said brightly. "I see it now!" He said looking up into her eyes. "Maybe that means I'll be tall too, since I'm already big in the sky." he said teasingly.

She smiled down at him as he found the river then she looked back up at it herself and marveled at it's size. Maybe it was a sign he would grow to be tall. She then looked over at him seeing again the difference in his height since their first meeting. "You have grown quite a bit already in such a short time. Whether the stars show it or not I think you will grow to be taller then me for sure." She was rather confident that he would at least match her height, but she was the shortest so far in her family.

"I hope so." he said with a smile. He moved away from her then and wandered a few feet away looking up at the sky. "It's so much bigger than I imagined." he said. "I've only been able to see they sky through the gap in the trees and I mean I knew it was big...but not This big!" he finished turning in a circle and looking around. "There are so many."
He stopped and spread out his wings, his head still lifted up to the sky. The edges glinting softly in the starlight. He wondered what it made him look like but another thought crossed his mind and he retracted the wings before the question burst out. "Do all the stars have names?" he asked looking back at Aruhe.

She smiled and nodded at him encouragingly and watched him look up at the sky as he commented on the vastness of it all. He looked so grown as he stretched out his wings. She couldn't help but think again on how fast he seems to be growing, she almost worried he would change as he got older and more confidence. She wanted what was best for her friend, she could just hope they'd remain friends no matter what.
"The sky is very vast, we can only see a fraction of the sky and our galaxy or so I've learned through my mother. A lot do have names, but others just have 'titles' and classifications. There are other planets and suns, comets/asteroids, astral dust....so much my mother has told me, that she learned from the humans that raised her. I still have much to learn from her..maybe we both can learn from her now. It would make a good excuse for you to meet her." she said with a slight sly smile.

"That's a lot of stuff up there." he said absently focusing on the Big Dipper and picking out the pattern, he didn't know what a dipper was but it did make him think of a gourd. "That sounds okay with me." he said absently not really realizing he was now pretty much committed to meeting her mother. Although a little scary, it couldn't be all bad, could it?
"What's that one?" he asked using a wing to point out the Big Dipper. "It kinda looks like a gourd that was growing nearby when I came out of my basket." he said. "Oh hey, there's another one almost just like it." he said picking it out and motioning again with a wing.
