- CRACK -
Dearka winced and raised her hoof.
This was only the second time she had ever experienced the winter season, and the first time had not been nearly as dreadful as this one. The bright sun sat low in the sky, glittering off the few feet of snow, and the air was cold. Very cold. Each breath from Dearka puffed up in front of her before dissipating. She had never felt cold quite like this before. And with the cold came unexpected obstacles.
Dearka needed water and for some reason the snow didn't seem to quench her thirst. It only made her thirstier. She had already gotten her tongue stuck to a shard of tree ice while trying to lick it earlier that day. So she was at the second option. She had ventured out of the scant protection of the forest to a stream's edge. Ears twitching, listening for danger, she had gone to drink from the small brook only to find that it had hardened into ice.
Solid ice.
Confused, the young doe did the only thing she could think of. Stomp on it in order to get to the water below. Unfortunately she never considered how loud she would be.Teari turned green eyes to the west, towards the lightening edge of the forest. He knew that water lay that way; he had actually just come from that direction. He also knew that the forest lightening meant that there was a break in the tree-line and less hiding spots.
The grey buck ripped another piece of bark off the barren tree and chewed it thoughtfully. He had heard the noise, and was torn between heading further into the heart of the forest and going to investigate. He considered slowly.
And finally picked up his hooves and set off. Towards the border of the trees.

Silence was difficult to achieve this time of year, the snow nearly making it impossible to press down a hoof without making some sort of crunch. The more ice you hit the less muffled the sound would be, and each fracture would crackle and pop. Chiaro's approach was to move slowly, to take one step at a time, stop and observe his surroundings, then continue on in whatever direction he sought to head. It was tedious, but the only way he had managed to stay as quiet and unseen all of his years having lived the cold months. Clouds of fog-like breath escaped his maw, the last remnants of his exhaled breath warm against his fur. It was cold, the coldest winter he had yet to experience.
Crack. The sound raised his head, his ears pulled forward in the direction of the loud noise. It was more than anything the environment would have likely caused on its own, and so he concluded that perhaps another of his kind would be at the source. Or perhaps it was not his kind. Curiosity flicked across his expression, his eyes permanently staying wide with intrigue as he started off in the direction of the sound. Light was glittering through the trees and hesitant for a moment, Chiaro considered staying behind. His coat blended best with twilight and darkness. But the sun was low in the sky, perhaps he would still be able to hide himself and get a peak at whatever it was in the near distance.
Coming upon the scene he froze, instinct locking his legs as his eyes scanned over the frozen brook, but lingered more on the little figure at it's edge. A doe, and a young one at that. What was she doing? "Forgive my intrusion, but perhaps it would be safer to attempt what you're doing with more company. Alone you could draw all sorts of unwanted attention to yourself."

Dearka's head swiveled around, one of her front hooves rose and instinct told her to flee immediately. As soon as her eyes rested on the stag all of the tension dissolved. Another deer, how unexpected. She chuckled under her breath at her own fright.
With a twinkle in her eye she addressed the male, "Yes, company would be welcome indeed. But it's dreadfully hard to find on days like today. With this awful cold, I'm sure we are the only two deer who haven't headed for warmer weather." He had a rack for protection, something she dearly wished she had for when she ventured out in the open. His company would be welcome indeed, there was no telling what predators were nearby. "Any thoughts on this?" She indicated the ice. Sure it had made a loud noise, but she had only managed to crack the ice, not break it completely. Perhaps this one was more experienced with the climate than she, and would have a solution for getting to the water beneath.
