Is there a way to see when someone replies, besides constantly checking up on the thread, or is it just base on quoting?

Not really, unless you're the thread creator (it'll occasionally give you a notification that says "your thread (thread title) has some replies").
You basically have to either quote people/get quoted of just keep checking back.
