She just couldn't catch a break. Li glanced upwards to the cotton-grey sky, vaguely annoyed. If it was going to rain, the least it could do was rain properly and not do this annoying drizzle that was doing little more than coating the ground with a slickness and making her clothes a tad heavier. She would have been more content if it had been a full-on rain -- a thunderstorm, even! But then, the Lunarian had always had a love of such storms, and it simply seemed it would not be to her credit this day. It was a sort of strange omen, this partial-compliance of what made her happiest, but it wasn't in her to back down. Subconsciously, she touched the scar hidden beneath her top, watching her opponent approach; no, if anything, her scars were proof that good judgment was not yet on her side.

Again without her weapon - more for the weather this time than pride - Li tilted her head to the side, frustrated at the lack of crack she was expecting and instead rewarded with a pulled ache. Odds stacked against you? she thought inwardly as the gong sounded to begin the battle, Good. Builds strength to push through them. Despite the weather - or perhaps because of it - Li began a half jog around the ring to close in on her opponent, making sure to see all she could before jumping into the fire. It had been far too long since she'd had a good row...

Zuyao was a practitioner of Northern Shaolin martial arts. The Lunarian was not old by any standards, but his practice had aged him beyond his years, and his head was a crowd of white while his calm face remained youthful.

He hadn’t donned the traditional orange robes of his more devout fellow students, not wanting to tarnish their name by joining this tournament, but his lack of costume in no way meant a corresponding lack of skill. Now, he merely bowed to the girl standing in front of him, fist in open palm.

When the gong was struck, his demeanor changed immediately. Zuyao fell into a lowered stance, both hands up and ready to defend, or in this case, curl into the tiger fist. He threw an experimental punch, once she was close enough.

Oh, thank Lunaria, this one knew the value of silence. Li would have smiled if the time were more appropriate; for now, the best value of gratitude she could share was a battle worthy of both their time.

His immediate crouch instinctively put her on her toes, making her weight lighter in each step, her pupils slitting with the adrenaline of motion. Li admired his movements almost immediately, sharp and elegant, but she wouldn't be thrown off by his presence or style that was more weight-centric than her own. She couldn't entirely avoid the punch, testing as it was, as her feet slid a little on the mat with her abrupt turn of body. Instead of trying to catch herself, she put the flat of her palm against his wrist and threw her weight over him, sending an upward spray of water to follow her feet. Li knew her landing wouldn't be graceful, but she was already in motion and there was no clean way to recover once's balance without distance.

Indeed, her feet slid backwards while she moved her weight forward towards him, lifting her arms in a partial readiness for defense. There was little she could do to fully protect herself, however, slipping as she was. It didn't help, she thought in those brief but slow-moving seconds, that his fighting form was far more grounded than her own.

The pale blue of Zuyao’s eyes were calculating as he watched the girl approach him. The girl was fleetfooted, focused, and from the way she attempted to deflect his punch, rather acrobatic. Would that be enough to overcome his practice? The answer remained to be seen.

He was mildly surprised by the way she’d disappeared over his head, though he knew the only place she could be was behind him. Shifting his feet around, neither moving from their place on the ground, it was no effort to turn to face her once again.

Snaking one hand out in an attempt to catch her wrist, Zuyao slid his right foot in a clockwise arc, swiveling his body out of her way. Slippery as the ground was, it would be easy to pull her forward and use her momentum against her. His left hand, still half curled in the animal fist, circled around to deliver a decisive punch in her direction.

And caught she was, without any resistance. She'd been poised to deflect a blow or at least protect her head in the case of him using his legs. Li had not at all prepared for being grabbed, and it showed in the way her amethyst eyes widened with surprise and a puzzled flare before she was being moved against her will. Between her own momentum that she'd put forth and him utilizing it against her, she was literally helpless in his grasp. The thrust of his curled fist bypassed where her held arm had been blocking and instead connected solidly beneath her breast. The collision with her sternum was solid, winding her almost immediately, giving her brief flashbacks to when the weapon had all but skewered her not far from where he had struck.

The motion of her own body and the punch going opposite forced her legs out from under her, landing her flat on her back; had she not already been winded, she surely would have been now! Li didn't need lungfuls of air to keep up her survival instinct, however, and as much as she hurt and ached from the attack -- the strike of which was making her limbs feel lethargic as the true strength of the strike scoured her body -- she put her free arm back behind her shoulder and threw her legs up, her knees on either side of her head before she kicked them out towards Zuyao.

It was Zuyao’s turn to express surprise, though this was only evident in a slight raising of his white eyebrows when his opponent recovered quickly enough to launch an impressive counter-attack. His hit should have left her breathless at the very least, though he had no way of knowing how much he had actually done to her from the way she reacted.

In an unexpected maneuver, the Shaolin disciple darted forward, keeping his center of gravity low to the ground. Zuyao crossed his forearms to block the downward part of the arc of her kick, grunting on impact. A lesser Lunarian might have broken his arms attempting such a move, but Zuyao hadn’t punched stone walls repeatedly in his training for nothing. All he would walk away with were profoundly sore arms.

Now, he was exactly where he wanted to be. Bringing his back foot forward and twisting his body to the right to aid its momentum, he swung a hard kick toward the young woman.

And the sound that escaped her was quiet, if not strained, her body all but being hurled to the side with the force of his kick. Li again found herself on her back, sliding across the arena before coming to a halt under the light sheen of rain, pressing one hand to her breast. She couldn't breathe, but as long as she remained still, she'd gather herself again and be able to walk off with some of her pride. But that meant --

She wheezed a few words and, with a shake of her head, she tried again. "I yield," she said in a hoarse voice, actually grinning at her opponent with something that translated as satisfaction despite the intense ache of her body. "Proudly." On one elbow, her hand still pressing against her sternum where he'd previously hit her, she bowed her head from her downed position. He'd given her hell with so little effort; she was proud that the Lunarians had such an incredible fighter to their merit, and she was deeply pleased that she'd finally been able to have her brief, adrenaline-fueled battle.

It was worth it. "I'll be -- cheering -- for you," she managed between taking in breaths, finally starting to attempt to get to her feet. The world didn't stop just because she was hurt, after all.

The kick connected much more solidly this time; he could feel it in his bones. Sure enough, the young woman had practically flown aside, and any doubts Zuyao might have had about the effects of his earlier assault disappeared. She was finished, if she wanted to be able to walk out of the ring unassisted.

But she was an honorable opponent. When the referee signaled for the end of the match, the man fell into another bow, fist in open palm the way he’d opened the match. There was a small crinkling in the corners of his eyes, the only indication that he too had enjoyed the brief fight. “Thank you, honorable challenger.”
