A little personal history: Mulan came from a different part of Fairy-Tale Land. A part where the Curse did not occur to it; but froze time to all.
During her middle-teenaged years and twelve years beyond; Mulan portrayed herself as a man to be part of the army in the stead of her wounded father and only brother who was too young to take up the duties. Trained hard and fought harshly beside the men of the army to where she gained respect from many soldiers and commanders and eventually got promoted up to General to command her own company. She even fell for her own Commander, but knew he saw her as a man and nothing else.
When the time came to retire, she returned home, but some of her former army men went to visit only to find out she was actually a woman. It took awhile for them to get used to it, but they all became simple friends and former comrades.
Mulan, unfortunately, was not into retirement for long when she returned--as a woman--to the army to help fight against the Ogres that started to invade their part of the land. Not once did she give any hesitation now her identity was known. On the contrary, it seemed to have made the bond of her company stronger.
Roleplay Sample
Looking over to the fair-skinned princess as she took a rest from their travels for now, the former general tilted her head a little in curiosity. The young woman did not have to worry much about fighting, but at least she was now willing to know a little bit about the proper usage of a dagger. It was not much, but it was enough for now for the long-slumbered woman. Peering back over to the dying fire, the dark-brown-so-close-to-black eyes were getting weary as well; but unlike the resting Aurora, Mulan was used to the lack of sleep. So many years of traveling in the company of her army men and often had been part of the watch even so high up in the ranks. Long before the Curse froze time, the men in her company horse-played with her like she was one of time and in fact she was a man for a long time--at least acted, sounded and dressed like one. It was until the Ogres finally came to her lands that she had to stop and be more serious than ever.
Now. Now was different, though. There was a black wraith out there with a man's soul. A soul whom she loves; but possible he does not return the love since the darling princess is awake. Mulan does not regret anything. There is no time for that, but there was a part of her that just wanted the Princess to stay asleep.
