Dana Caffrey did not come from a wealthy family, or a family that believed in spending of any kind on yourself. It was selfish, daddy said, it was greedy, daddy said.

But god dammit if it wasn't the greatest day of her life her aunt actually bought her a legit camera. It was amazing. Her literally most prized possession. And that stupid corrupt senshi b***h tweaked the lens.

Maybe she should've been more offended by the whole threatening to kill her thing, but she had more or less blown that off. She was thirteen, and losing shiny stuff was much more important than life or death right now. Priorities. Plus, she didn't even notice until she had broken out her latest project. Her friend was expecting Hawkeye cosplay photos by the end of tonight and she had doted lovingly on the costume, not even complaining she always got stuck being a guy whenever crackpot costume themes were concocted. She was tall, gangly and flat, she could pull off being dressed like a guy. And she did it damn well.

But she couldn't pull off the casing.

She tumbled to the grass in the park, half doing battle with a small screw driver in hand and trying to roughly pry it open so she could adjust whatever else got messed up when it was dropped.

Being twelve definitely had its perks. Despite his mother’s need to keep a close eye on him, he was sometimes able to convince her that allowing him out for fresh air was a good thing. He might be small, but he was still more intelligent than his brothers had been at his age!

Playing baseball with friends in the park was clearly a good enough excuse to get out of his mother’s reach, and he took full advantage of it. Sure, he’d packed up his glove and ball and rode his bike to the park in question, but with a shortage of friends available, or friends at all, he was left to toss the ball for him to catch, himself.

It didn’t bother him too much. He liked his independence, and he often found that kids his age were much too immature and childish for his liking. Especially when it came to gadgets and technology.

“What are you doing??” he called from a few yards away, having spotted the other boy whilst recovering the ball that had rolled away from him. “Are you trying to destroy it??” Didn’t he know he wasn’t supposed to treat cameras like that??

Dana's head shot up at being addressed. She though she'd picked a decently fair distance away from the game to do her thing but apparently miscalculated how far balls could and would be hit.

"I'm not trying to destroy it," She called back, still sort of hunched over it like a little savage though. She waved her screwdriver over her head to show she had totally brought tools. "I can't get the casing off, something inside got tweaked."

Luckily how it got tweaked didn't register on Dana's list of important things to shout, because yelling about senshi and terrorists probably would've been bad.

"I can't get inside, the screws won't give."

”You certainly look like you’re trying to destroy it,” Peter said with a sigh of disbelief. Did this kid really not know how to handle cameras?

“You can’t just beat on it like you’re doing,” he informed her as he made his way closer so he could retrieve his ball and then squat down next to the other boy to see just what it was he was trying to do. “Those kinds of cameras have lots of little parts and mirrors and if you get even dust in them, it could mess them up.”

He couldn’t say he did any photography himself, but his grandparents had been photographers, and he’d been inside his grandfather’s darkroom and had listened to enough stories to know you can’t just jab a screwdriver into it, especially if trying to fix it.

“May I try?” he wondered, dropping his glove and ball so he could hold his hands out for the camera. He’d understand if the guy didn’t want to let him see it, but he felt he could do a better job at not destroying it.

"Well," Dana used her huffy tone that just came naturally when dealing with other people about her things. She didn't have very many possessions, what she did have required a certain amount of value to stay in one piece.

"If you have a better idea on how to get around locktite, then go for it!" She handed it over.

"Sometimes I think someone's ******** around with me," She confessed, and then suddenly had an 'oh shi--' moment when she looked around to make sure there were no adults to witness and have a hissy fit about her foul mouth. The plague of every preteen who so desperately wanted to swear a lot to be cool, but sometimes she wondered if she got extra flak from people who recognized her family.

Because being a clergman's daughter was super no fun.

"'Cause who puts locktite on things that should clearly come apart?!" Evie was a likely suspect because she considered Dana's 'taking apart' things to be more 'destroying them' and had a weird thing about expensive things that went to the younger Caffrey. "My stupid sister has no respect for personal property. But when her piece a's**t Gateway or whatever needs an upgrade whose she go cryin' to? Yeah."

”Loc--” he started and then stopped, his eyes wide. “Did someone glue this together??” Peter sputtered and started at the camera, wondering if it was already a lost cause. Why would someone do that??

He took the camera from her, skeptical of being able to do anything in the least, but figured it was worth a shot. If this thing had been stuck together with glue... well...

“You’re saying you can work on computers, but not cameras? Did you even look up how to take this apart? Or look for a manual online?” he wondered, not bothering to hide his exasperation. Peter ran his fingers along the edge of where it was supposed to open, grumbling to himself about how people needed to take better care of their things...

"Loctite, it's specialized glue to stop people from undoing the screws and getting in your casing," Dana laughed.

"I mean, it's not Elmer's craft glue, gawd. HP used to use it to force people to send their s**t in for repairs 'stead of doing it themselves, but sometimes people just do it to be dicks," Or play pranks, but Evie was not the pranking type. so Dana concluded this was the most likely scenario.

She ran her finger along one panel. "You open this up, I think, at least that's how I got to the shutter button to replace the spring. I dunno, I mostly just open s**t up and see what's what, I didn't know I was going to be doing camera surgery today! That's why alls I got is this, which might be too big," She mumbled, fiddling with the screwdriver. Dana had a few tools, but she didn't carry her entire arsenal on her at all time.

"Then again, if it's sealed, stripping the screws is inevitable anyway," She said, completely at ease and quite convinced it was all hilarious.

Peter stared at the other child with a look that clearly said he thought this kid was crazy. Slowly he shook his head and went back to fidgeting with the camera.

"You might have to get someone professional to look at this... I don't want to break it, and if we can't get in it..." he mumbled, not wanting this other kid to think he was going to just give up, but he knew he'd feel like crap if he ended up helping him break it even further.

"I'm Peter, by the way," he said to introduce himself, sort of holding out the camera for him to take back if he wanted... Peter didn't want to hog it if this kid wanted to try messing with it more. "Want to try holding it still while I unscrew it...? I dunno... worth a shot, I guess..."

Or they would just both break it...

"Hm..." Dana took the camera back and turned it over in her hands before looking around at their environment.

"Maybe out here is not the best place anyways. Like I said, I don't have all my tools anyway. But you seem pretty smart, maybe you can help me fix it later! Somewhere... ah, with an indoor table."

She smiled a toothy grin and shifted her camera to one hand to hold out the other to shake. "I'm Dana."

"Probably," he mumbled, looking over the camera once more before glancing up at him. Slowly he nodded in agreement, although he made sure to shrug in slightly forced modesty at the compliment.

"I mean... I do have top grades in all my classes." Well, maybe not all of them, but that was only because there were other goody-goodies who studied just to beat him in testing...

Or something like that.

"Yeah, alright," he nodded more firmly, taking Dana's hand to shake, his own grin emphasizing his dimples and the gap between his teeth that would surely require braces. "Just don't break it before we can get into it."
