It was winter on Planet Pomona, meaning it was a bit cooler than normal. Not that it was comfortable exactly – it was a hothouse after all – but it was enough that there was a slight uptick in the trickle of visitors on the planet. And that meant that the planet’s Senshi was busy, trying to be in several places at once to keep an eye on the visitors.

Mid-day was passing, as was the mid-day rest period, meaning that Sailor Pomona, Thain of the Good Peoples, Judge of the Scoundrels, and Glorified Babysitter of the Foreigners – okay, the last title was made up, but Pomona felt it should’ve been official – had duties that needed seeing to. There were several offworlders visiting, and she was supposed to be there to make sure they were happy, and make sure they stayed out of trouble. That, however, would just have to wait, because Pomona was feeling a bit less than hospitable. Why?

She had missed lunch.

Oh, sure, snicker if you want, but missing a meal is a truly upsetting thing to a Pomonian. That was why Pomona had been given the duties of Thain: no one else wanted them. They were too likely to interfere with meals (and other things besides). And as if missing a meal hadn’t been bad enough, Pomona had missed said meal because she had been busy dealing with a small group of drunk offworlders – drunk before midday! – that had started a food fight.

Oh, oh, the injustice! The barbarians, wasting good food! Pomona had been stuck scolding the overgrown toddlers, surrounded by splattered gravy and smushed bread and other perfectly good food that was left to decorate the floor and walls and ceiling. The other Pomonians that had played witness to the travesty had been so dismayed and disgruntled, they almost considered starting a riot. Almost. Bless their sweet natures and lazy legs, because in the end they couldn’t be bothered to do more than make unhelpful commentary from their tables.

Pomona, meanwhile, missed lunch, and most of the midday rest too. But everyone would just have to wait, because even Sailor-Thain-Judge-Babysitters needed food, and Pomona had waited quite long enough. She was headed towards the royal manor, where she had every intention of raiding the kitchen.

Everywhere was humid! Outside was humid, no denying it. And inside the tent was pretty humid as well. It was fortunate that her outfit had a lot of room to breathe, otherwise she might have just died in the tent that very day!

It wasn't in her nature to sit and sulk about her suffering. Especially on a new world like this one! There was a lot to investigate. She had long noticed how the natives had been eyeballing her.

Though, in their defense, she probably wasn't helping the situation at the moment. The blonde girl was wearing her show costume, which had plenty of bronzed coins dangling off her as she walked down the pathways. That might have been enough to get the attentions of the natives, however, it wasn't quite the reason why folks were essentially staring.

It had everything to do with the fact the Foreigner to Pomona was walking on her hands down the pathway, as if nothing was wrong.

Certainly, the humidity was bad, but with the blood rushing to her head, it made the problems of the humidity go away.

Eventually she managed to see someone, and with a friendly manner, she rolled her ankle as if she was trying to wave at this person. "Hello there!"

Hearing someone greeting her, Pomona looked over and saw… feets. Well, that sure was odd. Looking down, she saw the feets was attached to an upside-down girl, who for some reason was using her hands instead of her feets. Wasn’t much a concern to Pomona – wasn’t like the girl was hurting anyone – but if her outfit didn’t make her outsider-ness obvious, the hands-for-feets would.

“ Ah, hello.”

Feets-hands, feets-hands… oh right! There was some traveling entertainers visiting. Upside-down girl likely belonged with that group.

“ I’m Pom- eh, I’m Cali.” Pomona-of-Pomona seemed kinda pompous to just throw around, especially with an upside-down guest. “ I hope you’re liking your visit?”

With a chuckle, the upside-down girl commented "It is a pleasure to meet you Pom-eh-Cali!" She was upside-down, but she was grinning. However, realizing it would probably be a tad more polite to be upright for her own introduction, she lowered her legs down to touch the floor, then lifted her upper body back up.

She had to clap her hands together to get the dirt that was caked to her hands off. Her hands had been so wet due to the environment that it was impossible to keep her hands absolutely clean. "So far, it has been good. Quiet, but good." Once she seemed satisfied with how clean her hands had gotten (which was not very clean at all), she wiped it off on the edge of her legging before thrusting it forward to the redhead.

"I don't know whether to be jealous of all the moisture here or to loathe it... it takes a bit of getting used to though. Either way, I am Iris!"

Cali watched the girl’s movements with a faint amount of awe and envy. She wasn’t exactly clumsy, but she definitely did not have that degree of control over her body. How many years of training and practice must that have taken? At least, she kinda hoped it was years; she hated to think she was that out of shape.

Shaking the proffered hand, Cali couldn’t help but grin at the blonde’s complaints.

“ Ah, yes, our lovely humidity. It’s been the creation of many a’ up-do.”

Cali’s hair basically lived in braids because, well, it was easy. Much easier then those fancy knots and knobs the frillier sort liked.

“ Iris like… like Iris-Iris?” She asked, perking up visibly. “ M’ title’s a bit silly ‘round here, so I’m not in the habit a-using it much, but I’m Pomona.”

Not much as in almost never. Planet Pomona was as far from a warrior’s planet as you could get, Pomona only ever fighting handsy drunkards.

"Ah, so you are Sailor Pomona!" Their hands eventually stopped shaking, since if they went too long, it wouldn't be a greeting and just something awkward. Of course, Cali's half question about Iris' name and title caused the blonde to blink a couple times.

"...Well, yes... Iris-Iris... My birth name is Iris... and I am Sailor Iris... so yes, Iris-Iris!" She chuckled a bit before lifting both arms so her hands would rest behind her own head. The foreigner had to note that her hair was absolutely wet as she stood there, fingers amongst her own locks.

"...So... since I am obviously out of the loop... how is your title silly? What is the senshi of your world tasked with as responsibilities?"

Iris was named Iris? Was that coincidence, or how did that work? Cali wasn’t as up on all the other Senshis’ customs and traditions and whatnot as she should be.

“ I’m basically the sheriff. Sounds good enough, but truth is, there ain’t much need for sheriff-ing around here. Most people sorts out problems theirselves, or the Council does it. I’m also supposed to play nice with other Senshi when they come here, but that don’t happen much.”

Pomona-eh-Cali was only responsible for other Senshi when they came to the planet in an official capacity, and seeing as how the planet rarely had trouble and didn’t have anything terribly exciting to offer, it didn’t happen often. However, it did make a thought occur to Cali.

“ You know… since you are a Senshi – even though you ain’t here all officially - I can bring you up in the manor. Get ya’ some of the special peppers, if ya’ like.”

If Iris was going to make an educated guess, the word "sheriff" probably meant a peace keeper. There was mention of her responsibilities including other senshi. That was intriguing, but not unexpected.

The invitation she received soon was met with a small tidbit of information. "You are aware that all the performers in the troupe are senshi from different worlds, right?" They were all within an allied set of territories within the asteroid belt. All had their own talents, and thanks to the circus, they all were able to get recognition for those talents.

"...the manor? What's 'the manor' like? Should I get all the girls to join us?" The blonde laughed before she tossed in a playful wink.

"...Nah... I'm kidding... but... special peppers? What do you mean special?"

“ They are?” Pomona frozed mid-step, then smacked her palm against her forehead. “ Argh, I feel stupider than a holey sack. Got a feeling I oughtta have known that.”

Shaking her head, she resumed walking, gesturing with one hand to the road before them.

“ The Manor is… well, guess it’s the closest thing we got to a castle. The royal family lives there, and I got quarters in the back. There’s a garden in the center, and that’s where I grow my own batch of peppers. They’re my babies, they are, and they’re the spiciest peppers around.”

Some Senshi had visions or healing powers or whatnot, but not Pomona. No, she grew extra hot peppers. And boy, were they hot! She used to grow them in the fields, but after one too many young Pomonians ended up in the care of a medicine woman after a dare, she started growing them exclusively in the Manor's garden.

" Well, here we are. Pomona's "castle"." She said, gesturing to the building before them. It was two stories in the front, with wooden balconies on the second floor and a large, arched, wooden double door on the ground floor.

“ Ready to set your mouth on fire?”

How a sack filled with holes was stupid was beyond Iris, but she bobbed her head up and down as if she understood the phrase. Her eyes were wide, taking everything in a true tourist manner, absorbing the rush of visual information as best as she could. The Manor itself received quite an odd smile from the performer, though the reasoning itself was not explained.

It was nice to find another world where the royal family lived in a slightly more humble set up.

"Peppers are definitely a change from the usual sort of food I am accustomed to back home... I am used to dried foods and very bland foods. Flavor would be a very nice change!"

Clearly Pomona had to be exaggerating about setting her mouth on fire.

Clearly!

The possibility that an out-worlder might not get the local slang was completely missed by Pomona, who blithely charged ahead.

“ Oh, you’ll a-get some flavor a’right. This-a-way.”

Pomona lead the way into the manor, nodding to the handful of staff they passed as they made their way to the kitchen, where more people were bustling about than they had passed in the entirety of their trip there.

“ Cali! Finally come to eat, eh? Well, c’mon then; not good for a growing’ lass to be skippin’ meals.”

The red-head waved to the stocky woman that had addressed her, grinning sheepishly.

“ Yea Nola, I guess I could use some food, but I also need some stuff for my guest ‘ere.”

At the word “guest,” several invisible pairs of ears perked up, and Iris might have noticed that she had become the center of attention. A motion from Nola sent the workers back to work at double the speed, and suddenly plates of food began to materialize on the table next to where Pomona and Iris were standing. It was too much food for the average person, or even two average people, but Pomona just added as an afterthought:

“ She’s also gonna test her tongue ‘gainst my babies.”

And with that, a bowl of peppers, a knife, a bottle of milk, and a whole cheese wheel also appeared. Grinning, Pomona gestured to the shriveled, bright orange peppers resting innocently in the bowl.

“ If’n you want to, ah, ease your way into ‘em, I’d suggest deseedin’ 'em.”

Iris was a friendly enough sort that she didn't seem to look or feel uncomfortable as she followed behind Pomona, getting looked upon by the staff. The blonde easily smiled to each person who looked to her, not seeming to mind the sudden burst of attention she was receiving. If she had been shy, then she probably wouldn't have gone into the traveling show in the first place.

It was impressive enough to see the spread when it was finished, but what was even more impressive was how quickly everything was brought out. She sadly could not say she wasn't used to such treatment, since even on her home world she was somewhat on a pedestal.

Glancing around to all the staff that had assisted with putting the spread together, the Iridian bowed slightly and let her gratitude be known with two simple words. "Thank you!" With that, she sat down in front of the spot where the orange peppers had been set up.

Two golden eyes looked over the bright peppers. They were a very festive color. Iris, unfortunately, was not familiar with the language of pepper-color, so the intimidation level of these little fruits seemed completely lost upon her.

All she had to go off of was Pomona's descriptions. When her companion gave her the suggestion to ease into the fruit, Iris shook her head. Taking it easy was not her intention.

With the knife, she cut off the ends of the peppers that had the stem, since the foreigner was pretty sure the stems were not edible, then took the fruit and held it before her mouth. She held it there, glancing about the room and judging the expressions on the different faces in the room before boldly doing something stupid.

She tossed the whole piece of fruit in her mouth at once.

One chewing motion later she regretted such a stupid move. Within less than a second, her mouth was already in a pain she had never suffered before. Her skin was already turning quite flush upon her face, and soon enough the blonde had smacked her face against the table itself as if her head was too heavy to hold up on its own.

Somewhere in the back of Iris' head, she realized an awful fact. She still had to fully chew and swallow the pepper in her mouth.

Guest though she was, the moment it was announced that Iris planned to try a Fire Pepper, she became a source of potential entertainment for the cooks. And sure enough, the peppers didn’t disappoint.

“ Come on lass, it’s only got a wee bit of heat!” called one, while the others laughed good-naturedly.

Pomona pat Iris on the back.

“ If you ain’t used to it, they’ll burn goin’ in and goin’ out. ‘s why I grow them private now; too many saplings ate them in challenge ‘n got laid up with achin’ bellies.”

Generally the kids that ate them on a dare ate a couple of several of them at once but considering that Pomonians were raised on spicy foods, she figured it was roughly equivalent to an off-worlder eating one.

“ Cheese ‘n milk’ll take the edge off. No shame in that, especially since you're not cryin’ like some do. Make sure not to rub your eyes though; that’s a bucket of fun you don’t need.”
PostPosted: Wed Jun 26, 2013 9:29 pm

The laughter didn't fall upon deaf ears. If anything, the laughter was only louder than it actually was because of all the pain. It was almost like having a migraine throbbing in her head mixed with heat, the laughter pulsing through her brain every second. It was almost enough to drive someone insane within a short amount of time.

Her head was still upon the table, and she wasn't about to lift it up. The world itself around her was a blur because her eyes were indeed watering up something fierce. The advice seemed to reach her ears, though it took a bit of time for the foreign senshi to comprehend what she was being told.

Helpful words of advice and shortcuts into making this more tolerable. However, as she dared to force her jaw into a chewing motion, she managed to spit out one proclamation.

"I ain't a cheater..."

All the helpful advice about easing her pain was obviously not going to be taken at that very moment.

It felt like hours upon end as she simply chewed, but it was only a mere manner of minutes as she worked her way through the pain to try and get the pepper ground up into a goo that was ready for swallowing. When she was ready to commit such a terrible act, she took in a huge breath through her nostrils before swiftly banishing it from her mouth and forcing it down towards the stomach. "I am going to hate myself for a few days I think..." she managed to grumble after she cleared her mouth.
