The species are evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers from tropics to temperate zones worldwide.
Plants in this genus have simple, alternate glossy leaves, typically with a spiny toothed, or serrated leaf margin. The inconspicuous flower is greenish white, with four petals. They are generally dioecious, with male and female flowers on different plants, although there are exceptions.
The small fruits of Ilex, although often referred to as berries, are technically drupes. They range in color from red to brown to black, and rarely green or yellow. The "bones" contain up to ten seeds each. Some species produce fruits parthenogenetically, such as the cultivar 'Nellie R. Stevens'. The fruits ripen in winter and thus provide winter colour contrast between the bright red of the fruits and the glossy green evergreen leaves. Hence the cut branches, especially of I. aquifolium, are widely used in Christmas decoration. The fruits are generally slightly toxic to humans, and can cause vomiting and diarrhea when ingested. However, they are a very important food source for birds and other wildlife.❖ Often the tropical species are especially threatened by habitat destruction and overexploitation. At least two species of Ilex have become extinct recently, and many others are barely surviving. The fruits are toxic to humans, though their poisonous properties are overstated and fatalities are almost unknown. They are extremely important food for numerous species of birds, and also are eaten by other wild animals. In the autumn and early winter the fruits are hard and apparently unpalatable. After being frozen or frosted several times, the fruits soften, and become milder in taste. During winter storms, birds often take refuge in hollies, which provide shelter, protection from predators (by the spiny leaves), and food. The flowers are sometimes eaten by the larva of the Double-striped Pug moth (Gymnoscelis rufifasciata). Other Lepidoptera whose larvae feed on holly include Bucculatrix ilecella, which feeds exclusively on hollies, and The Engrailed (Ectropis crepuscularia).❖ The berries of various species contain Theobromine, a compound similar to caffeine. In very small doses, theobromine and other caffeines only mildly stimulate the nervous system. However larger amounts can cause dizziness, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, elevated pulse rate, and low blood pressure, as well as drowsiness.
Berries attract birds that eat them after the frosts have reduced toxicity. However, if household pets ingest Holly, they are very liable to be poisoned, and it is a very good idea to keep holly decorations out of reach of pets and/or children.❖ → Several holly species are used to make caffeine-rich herbal teas. The South American Yerba Mate (I. paraguariensis) is boiled for the popular revigorating drinks Mate, and Chimarrão, and steeped in water for the cold Tereré. Guayusa (I. guayusa) is used both as a stimulant and as an admixture to the entheogenic tea ayahuasca; its leaves have the highest known caffeine content of any plant. In North and Central America, Yaupon (I. vomitoria), was used by southeastern Native Americans as a ceremonial stimulant and emetic known as "the black drink". As the name suggests, the tea's purgative properties were one of its main uses, most often ritually. Gallberry (Appalachian Tea, I. glabra) is a milder substitute for Yaupon and does not have caffeine. In China, the young leaf buds of I. kudingcha are processed in a method similar to green tea to make a tisane called kǔdīng chá (苦丁茶, roughly "bitter spikeleaf tea").
→ Between the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries, before the introduction of turnips, holly was cultivated for use as winter fodder for cattle and sheep. Less spiny varieties of holly were preferred, and in practice the leaves growing near the top of the tree have far fewer spines making them more suitable for fodder.

Whimsical — Eidel is in one word, whimsical. Despite being a full-fledged adult she often finds her head in the clouds, and would much rather spend the afternoon reciting her late grandfather’s miraculous tales to passerby than sweep the foyer for the umpteenth time. Still, she does her work with a gusto and takes every opportunity she can to earn her wages. But her dreaming mind always manages to wander down the golden fields of Helena, or float away with the City of Amies. She longs to travel the world over, but she has not yet managed to find it in her heart to leave her small village behind.
Headstrong — Eidel can at times be stubborn. Her sense of adventure often leads her to act first and consider the consequences after; something that keeps Celyn on his toes if he's ever to make a proper "mother" of her.
Warm-hearted — Despite her shortcomings, Eidel is very humble and good-natured. She does everything with a smile, and often goes out of her way to help others if in need. It's a trait that both concerns and annoys Celyn, as a compassion for others is something his distant, prickly heart cannot yet comprehend.

History: - Eidel has spent her childhood in a bustling little village in Amies. Her parents are long dead; her mother passed during childbirth, and her father taken of an illness several years later. Custody of both siblings then fell to their grandfather, who worked hard to raise them as best he could. But old age, like all things, eventually caught up to him.
Eidel has been living alone in a small cottage on the outskirts of the village since. She makes a daily commute on foot to the family inn in town, where she helps her brother manage their grandfather's former workplace.

The first floor opens up into a cushy living-space, with just enough room for a snug little sofa to one side, and a small dining table and chairs to the right, where Eidel often does her reading. Several small paintings line the wall, along with a bookshelf that houses some of her books, and even a few potted plants spruce up the otherwise simple home. The only other rooms are a narrow lavatory that sits at the back of the house, with a small porcelain sink and bath, and rather dated toilet. And adjacent to it, a kitchen which opens up into the living area. It boasts a reliant iron stove, and counter and cupboards, with twin windows looking out across the countryside.
The second floor is reserved for Eidel and Celyn's rooms, accessible only by a set of narrow stairs from the first floor. Each room features a small wood stove and cozy bed tucked away into a corner of the room. The stone floor is kept warm by well-worn tapestry rugs, and Eidel's room holds yet another bookcase, as well as desk she uses for studying and any paperwork. Celyn's on the other hand is rather plain, housing only a dresser and storage space along the wall by the base of his bed.
Outwardly, the house appears a bit ramshackle. The corners are rounded smooth with age, and several cobblestones are visibly missing. Ivy has grown across the backside, taking it over in a wash of green leaves, much to Celyn's scrutiny.❖ The Eventide - Originally nothing more than a rundown vacant building tucked away in the heart of the village, it was purchased and remodeled by Eidel's grandfather some years before his passing. After his death, Brennan was granted legal ownership of the property and took over their grandfather's business. It earned the name "Eventide" from the stray travelers and passerby who would often arrive at dusk, seeking a warm meal and bedding for the night.
The first floor features an open and public living-space, complete with large fireplace and high-backed lounge chairs, an upright piano, and bookshelves stocked with all manner of literature. The floor is hardwood, warmed by large tapestry rugs, and several bay windows overlook the bustling city streets. Farther back lie a private parlor reserved for family and guests and Brennan's own sleeping quarters, as well as a kitchen and pantry which tie into the front of the house.
The kitchen boasts a fine iron oven, several overhead cupboards and counters, and a wash basin complete with water piped in from a nearby well. A staircase leads down into the cellars below, where much of the pantry foodstuffs are stored.
The parlor is a simple but well-dressed room, with several high-backed lounge chairs and a matching sofa. A fireplace crackles warmly at its center and heavy dark drapes insulate the room and filter out much of the bustle from outside. A portrait of their late grandfather hangs above the mantle.
The second floor houses several washrooms and bedrooms for guests. Nothing special, just a single bed, nightstand, and linen closet to each room. Several rooms have multiple beds, allowing traveling families to bunk together.
