Name: Rae Maitland
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Appearance: Rae is rather gruff-looking overall. He is tall, narrow, and strong, yet he has a gentle nature that is hard to equate with his looks. He stands five feet, eleven inches, and his most prominent feature is a pitted scar on his right cheek, from jaw to cheekbone. He's not a pretty sort. His nose is hawkish, his brows thick, his lips too thin, but his eyes are the deep blue of the depths of the lake. His hair is iron brown, kept military short, and he keeps clean-shaven. He wears practical clothing, common armor when it is called for, and a servicable sword, though usually he is seen with an axe.
Personality: Gruff, firm, and capable, Rae is actually a gentle soul, prefering quiet and solitude. He can be bitter about his dismissal from the militia, but he will never speak of it, and sometimes outright lies when bothered to tell. He likes it best when he is working with his hands, as it is a great distraction. Sometimes Rae is a little bossy, but he tries not to get people too angry with him if he can help it.
History: When Rae's parents, Molly and Brand, were first starting out, they were given a loan by Brand's childhood friend, Roger, who was a minor noble and an officer of the militia. The repayment was to be their firstborn son as an apprentice, as he was not able to have children of his own. The deal was all around good, for it meant that their eldest son would have opportunities they could not provide him, as a family of craftsmen.
After a few miscarriages, Molly finally had Rae. After that, Molly never had a miscarriage again, and he gained four sisters and two brothers in the following years. When he was ten, he went to serve as Roger's squire. There he learned all sorts of combat. When he was twenty-two, he was honorably dismissed from the militia and being Roger's heir for unnamed reasons, which Rae never discusses, and Rae's brother was taken on as a squire instead.
Rae moved to Wellisbury, where he set up shop as a wood carver, making chairs, tables, that sort of thing, and acts as a defender in hard times. He was only chosen recently. He and the young buck Vahsaril are still getting used to each other, but Rae is already finding himself unable to imagine life without his guardian.
