Ami came running as soon as she could. If she could've she would've left the moment she heard Wilson wasn't doing well, but alas, she was a few hours late due to the hunter work schedule. Her regime didn't allow for moments where she could drop everything and leave.

As soon as she could though. The door flung open and she stood there in the doorway, feeling incredibly insecure about the whole thing now. It must've looked silly, as she stood there out of breath, leaning against the doorway with her hair disheveled and her skirt untidy.

"How is he, what did they say- what-" Her eyes, that hadn't left Wilson since entering, turned to face the attendant on duty. Double embarrassment. Of all the people.

Lex thought it was just going to be some routine sparring accident when the gurney rolled in. Just some poor soul who had to face some overzealous Hunter (probably a sun) in a spar and ended up getting knocked out and a little bloodied. Nothing big, just some stitches would be the most they would need.

Then he found out it was the man who'd become a fast friend to him through shared awkward and possibly drugged encounters; Wilson. His mind reeled as he examined the body that didn't seem at all damaged in any way other than the fact that it was unconscious. He heard an uttered 'coma' and 'unstable condition' among the chaotic chatter of the nurses as they all started examining him with runic tools. One of them turned to the tall silent trainee and barked an order for him to keep close watch on the patient now that they were done with immediate procedures.

It had been hours, Lex silently staring just above Wilson's head and not making a sound, but silently praying to a God he wasn't sure he believed in sometimes. Wilson was probably the one person he could call an actual friend by now, what with all the antics and conversation they'd had - even if they were enhanced by something.

When he heard tiny and rushed footsteps, he looked so the source. Ami, looking uncharacteristically chaotic, was standing there and starring straight at him.

A slight pause as he talked for the first time in hours, throat like an abandoned mine shaft. "He's...stabilized. In a coma, though." She was given no smile, no flattering words, no bright eyes. Just a blank, nearly hollow half lidded look and a small frown.

Ami pushed past Lex, going to Wilson's bedside. It was almost a relief how peaceful he looked. Like he was just taking a nap- he'd wake up any moment and go back to baking cookies and walking everywhere backwards.

Yet he wouldn't. Ami gingerly reached for his hand, encompassing it in her two smaller ones. "s**t Wilson," she muttered, eyes glazing over as she thought about what a coma meant. Maybe in the "real" world Wilson would've been cared for and recovered, but this was Deus Ex. Hunters in comas were shoved back into pods, where they wouldn't take up valuable space in the infirmary.

So the question was really how long they were willing to give Wilson to try and come to. "How long are they keeping him stabilized," she asked Lex, letting go of Wilson's hand as she realized it must've looked odd. Yet another reminder that she wasn't supposed to feel things for Wilson. Em should've been here, not her.

"Not sure, hopefully he'll get transferred to Moon care." Lex whispered, taking note of how Ami held Wilson's hand and just her general demeanor towards him. She seemed more frantic than he'd ever seen - even during that mission to the hallucinogenic island.

Odd, that she was acting this way. Had there been something there? No, Wilson told him that he had a girlfriend. Emma, right? Yes, Emma.

So...unrequited feelings? Possibly. Best not to pry, however.

"We can try to talk to Marcus about it."

Ami put her face in her hands, fingers rubbing the bridge of her nose as she started to sort through her feelings. It was good that they didn't have a date on Wilson's ... departure, but it didn't make it any more reassuring. Ami was truly a pessimist at heart- Wilson had a timestamp. Being in a coma only shortened the time he had left here at Deus. If he couldn't wake up ...

Her hand went to her ear and she smiled down at Wilson. "At least he can join Emmaline in the pods. He'd like that."

Lex's jaw clenched as he looked back to Wilson, a sort of raw grunt rumbling from the back oh his throat and through his nose and ending in a slight snort. He was unhappy, certainly, and the prospect of Wilson being podded made him even more so.

The way Ami talked about it with such finality was what got to him the most. He knew she was a pessimist, and that she knew the system better than he did. Those two factors combined meant that she was more than likely right, on this island anyway.

"...yeah." Was the only thing Lex could manage as he continued to stare at the spot on the wall just above Wilson's head.

Ami turned to Lex, an oddly blank expression on her face. She thought Lex's snort was one from laughter, and was about to reprimand him from something so heartless. When she found an expression other than that stupid smile he always wore, she was caught off guard. Silence fell on her, and she turned back to Wilson. Not facing Lex was easier.

She fumbled around in her pocket for a moment, withdrawing a pen. "What, you've run out of smiles?" she said, voice steeled over and locked away. "Hand me Wilson's clipboard." Order. Not request.

Handing Ami the clipboard without a sound, Lex gave a weary sigh, coupled with a slow shake of his head. Yes, Ami, he had run out of smiles. People tend to do that when a good friend is in a coma, or some other kind of awful accident.

"Yes, it seems I have." Lex murmured, sitting down finally and turning his gaze towards the floor. He didn't want to feel right now, not in front of Wilson's unconscious and certainly not in front of the emotionally hollow Ami.

Just tuck it away, keep it in for later.

Ami pulled a chair next to Wilson's bedside and sat herself in it, feet on the seat so she could hold them close as she wrote. It was unladylike, but at the moment Ami was at the precipice of emotional control. How she was sitting was the least of her worries.

As she took the clipboard, she gave a sad look at Wilson and then wrote her name in every timestamp available.

"It's not like Emmaline can do it," she muttered with empty tone to herself as she wrote the cursive letters over and over again. "You should see the way he looks at her pod." Hate didn't fill her words. Perhaps a hint of jealously, but it mostly sounded like a monotonous nothingness. Not the way it should've. Why was she babbling about this? "He's got this angry look on his face like- like a kid that got their legos stolen. I've never seen him look like that before- He cries too. When he thinks no one is around." For that matter, he never looked at anyone with such love in his eyes either. Ami didn't include that though.

She got frustrated and drew an arrow downwards, not wanting to repeat the letters anymore. She was going to fill all the timestamps anyways. "He loves her so damn much." She began filling out the necessary time stamps and informatoin, things like pin numbers and room numbers. "And now he's never going to get to see her. Of all the ******** people to get hurt."

Inwardly, Lex was chuckling. It wasn't a happy or amused chuckle, but that sort of chuckle that says 'oh, I know what that's like.' Wilson apparently kept his feelings to himself too, though his mask was probably stronger than Lex's. Though, there was also the possibility that Wilson simply didn't like to burden other people with his feelings - the nice guy route. Knowing Wilson? He was more than likely going with the nice guy route.

It was harsh, to think Wilson would never wake up. Surely they could pod him for a long period of time? Right next to Emma, like how people would bury a husband and wife's coffins next to each other; that would be a lovely gesture.

The thought, however pleasant, only served to irritate the Life trainee. It held such finality and so little hope - but most things on Deus were that way. This wasn't a fairy tale where all someone had to do was kiss a dead person to bring them back to life. This was actual life, with consequences and finality and hard life lessons and sorrow and pain and strife and turmoil.

This wasn't some stupid damn story, or a fantasy world. Heroes - the actual ones - made sacrifices even after taking on their mantles. Wilson had made his.

Ami pulled the clipboard closer to her, putting her forehead on her knees. "I wish it would've been me," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm not needed around here anyways and Wilson- Wilson he ..."

Her voice faltered and she pulled her knees closer, hand going to her ear. Too far. Too many emotions. Reel it in. Shut up and return to nothing.

She stood up robotically, any trace of feeling long gone from her face, all of it sucked up into the hand pulling on her ear. Her intention was to leave. Go back to her lab and work, like she did with everything else. Her feet wouldn't take her. "It hurts," she admitted, words falling from her mouth like heavy black pearls. "He doesn't even like me and it hurts."

"Bullshit."

It was a break of character, a completely ungentlemanly thing to say. However, what Ami said was just that - complete and utter bullshit. He stood; an almost angry brow furrowed deeply and an angry compassionate fire roaring in his eyes like a furnace in a winter log cabin.

"Not needed? Far from it." His words shot out like bullets from a silenced pistol. "You provided Kat a comfortable room and clothing, you work yourself to near death, you stick your neck out even though your bond isn't working the way it should." He took a step towards her, both hands going to her shoulders and attempting to look her in the eyes.

"You keep a level head in conflict, you use logic in every situation. You bring an element of realism to this group of otherwise wannabe heroes with heads full of grandiose adventures and glory." His lips were tugged by a sad and pathetic smile.

"And Wilson loves you. Not the way he loves Em, but he holds you near and dear to his heart." He cast a look at said man, remembering the conversation they'd had at the the beach when the Death was under some kind of narcotic.

Ami's head snapped up at his first words. If he was calling bullshit on her own feelings-

Kind words descended in a disorderly fashion before her. For once, Ami was tongue-tied, Lex filling her arms with words that she couldn't bear to hold. She tried to interrupt with small words, "That's-" "But-". Lex cut off any opportunity.

Warm hands sat on her shoulders as she stared down at Lex's shoes. She couldn't bear the eyes that weighed on her, as he continued to speak about virtues she didn't think she possessed. Things she hadn't heard- or at least not believed with conviction- for almost a year.

Tiny, shaking hands met with his shoulder blades as she pressed her nose into his chest. A hug. She didn't dare look up at him. Her voice was quiet, hardly anything but a murmur. "That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me since I came here."
PostPosted: Wed Jan 09, 2013 12:54 am

A...hug? Lex was dumbfounded for a few seconds, but didn't fail to return the gesture. That's what you did when a distressed woman - or just a person really - was hugging you. Her tiny, shaking body fit perfectly into his amrs, and he made a light stroking motion up and down her back.

"People are blind, apparently." He muttered, not sure where to go. Break the hug? Pat her on the head and keep watching Wilson? No, he'd stay in the embrace until she decided she was done with it, and provide what she needed.

Oddly enough, not a single sexual thought went through his mind. There was a distraught woman who he held as a friend in the room, hugging him. How could he even be bothered with his other head?

Ami held her tongue, not denying nor accepting his words. Instead she focused on nothing at all. Ami didn't touch people, she wasn't touchy even with those she was close to, but she was human. Even she wanted simple things like hugs sometimes. The only difference was that by that time she'd convinced herself she didn't need them.

Now she marveled at how nice Lex's hands felt, how anything at all felt nice. From here she could feel his heartbeat, as her own thudded in her chest.

Yet like all things, reality sunk in. She shouldn't have been here in Lex's arms. These weren't hers. Wilson's weren't hers. Adam's weren't hers. Still, there she was. Hugging one person as she was still attached to another, and permanently embossed by another. It was a predicament, really.

She stepped back. The moment was over, and this sort of behavior was improper once more. "Ah. Please don't ... How do I put this... Dead men tell no tales, Lex."
