Eyes closed and inhaling to the count of 5, holding, then exhaling to the same beat, Mayu drummed her fingers on her thigh as she centered herself for the fight that was about to begin. She had been itching to put herself back in the midst of things, and today seemed to be the perfect day to do so, readying herself for her first bout of the tournament. The sun was bright as the day passed into the prime hours of the afternoon, the temperature warming to its rays. Finally steeling herself to begin as the ref announced the arrival of her opponent, the brightly adorned Lunarian eyes snapped open, focusing on the figure standing across from her.
The man that stood there could not have been her opponent; they had to have the pairing wrong she thought to herself. Stretching, her opponent flexed his turquoise scaled arms from side to side, chest bare to the sun and clad only in loose fitting pants and sturdy boots. The man could be described as nothing other then a goliath among men.
Why in the name of the gods would I be paired with him of all people?! Were there no other viable candidates or something; I’m only an Academy student after all!, she practically screamed inside her head. She could feel her pulse heating up and racing as the sweat began to accumulate on her brow. Reaching up she made sure her mask was secure over the lower half of her face, and then grasped her fans inside her kimono, crouching to prepare herself for the strike of the gong. Nothing I can do about it now, this was the hand dealt to me and now to do my best with it. He’s taller and wider, so hopefully speed weighs in to my favor. He’s also bound to be stronger, so distance and quick strikes will be my gameplan.
As the gong clanged throughout the area, and Mayu began her sprint towards her opponent, she regretted for the first time having not chosen a weapon that was more suited for long ranged attacks.

Mukul grinned as the spectators cheered him on, flexing for a row of particularly passionate females who’d come bearing signs and flowers. The mixed martial arts star waved his arms upward for the crowd, trying to get them to scream his name even louder. He was a celebrity among this kind of crowd, and he loved every second of it. It was only after several minutes of this that he finally deigned to turn and look at his opponent—a much smaller, but very cute girl.
He wouldn’t have minded hearing his name on her lips. And the way she was charging him now? It was practically love at first sight.
“My beautiful lady!” He cried, even as he leapt out of the way of her reach. He couldn’t be dead before he asked her out, though it didn’t look like she would be hitting him very hard. “Please let me take you to dinner!”

The brute was faster then she expected, she thought exasperatedly as her legs flexed and dug into the ground, effectively slowing her down and allowing her to change her course so she could retreat to a safer distance. Her foe had yet to reveal his weapon of choice; though it was quite possible he could be fighting with pure physical strength alone, judging from the sheer size of his muscle mass.
As the rush of blood settled and the angry buzz that had risen in her ears from the frustration of a foul move, Mayu finally focused on what the man was saying.
”My beautiful lady! Please let me take you to dinner!”
Was this really the only thing he could think about right now? They were in the middle of a fight, this was not the time to be asking her out on a date! And really, how could he be attracted to her when half of her face was covered with a mask?! Men. Their priorities and preferences would always confuse her.
”Honestly, this really isn’t the time”, she called across the field. ”You don’t even know my name or what I actually look like, do you have such low standards or do you just like the mystery." Looking for the chance to make her next move, Mayu began a slow crescent walk around the playing field, hoping to lure him into making the next move.

Mukul had waited eagerly for the girl’s response, the smile on his face remaining fixed even as she made to brush him off.
“Mystery is easily remedied, my dear!” The man opened his arms wide and bowed theatrically, knowing just how to catch the turquoise of his scales in the afternoon sun. Straightening up, he added, “My name is Mukul—” There was an audible sigh in the crowd when he said it, “Might I ask yours?”
While he watched and waited, he pushed his hands into his pockets, also beginning a counter-clockwise walk around the ring so they circled each other. “As for your face,” he finally withdrew his hands, revealing that his knuckles were now wrapped in brass, “Are you going to make me take off that mask?” Mukul lunged on the last word, both fists poised by his side to attempt three rapid punches once he reached her.
Very suddenly, the flowery tone of his words seemed a stark contrast to his actions.

Mukul. If ever there was a more appropriate name for this giant of a man she couldn’t think of one. It sounded just as barbarian as he looked; a perfect fit. ”For you to remove this mask will require a whole lot more skill then I think you possess. Something tells me finesse isn’t your strong suit.” Even as the words left her mouth, no less biting then when at her most confident, she knew this match was not going to end well.
Suddenly the sun flashed brightly off the brass encasing his knuckles as the crowd screamed at his sudden dash across the field. Gods, how could he move so fast being so bulky? Now was not the time for a physics lesson. Dipping low, Mayu grabbed a fistful of sand from the ground below her. Time to even the odds, she thought to herself as she chunked the handful at her advancing opponent before following behind it, fans drew. Jumping in the air, the first punch met empty air as she sliced at the mans face. However, before she could even get within appropriate distance for her blow to connect, the second punch landed on her left thigh, followed closely behind with a quick clip to her hip.
She couldn’t help it. A cry of pain escaped her mouth as she dropped to the ground, rolling to the right as she avoided putting weight on the injured leg.
Yep.
This definitely was not going well at all.

He had the charm to look affronted at the girl’s words, bringing one gleaming hand to his chest as if to confirm that she was talking to him. Mukul was well aware of the fact that this was a public affair, and that the crowd was hanging onto every single word of their exchange. “I’m afraid you underestimate me, princess.”
He was Mukul, after all – some knew him as the fighting peacock, after his bright scales and showy fighting style. And as with the bird, there was much more to him than met the eye... which was a lot.
Chuckling to himself as she fell, the man was quick to follow, lifting her to a sitting position to put her in a chinlock. He leaned in then, his lips nearly grazing her ear. “This wouldn’t have happened if you’d just said yes, darling.”

It was over, she knew it. Her thigh was spasming and every time she tried to get up her leg folded beneath her. All she could do was drag herself along the ground in a helpless attempt to distance herself from Mukul. Nevertheless, it only took him a few simple steps to cross the distance, pick her off the ground, and lock his arm around her throat. In essence, a chinlock was easy to block, but Mayu knew better. There was no way she was going to win this fight now, not with the condition she was in. It was better to accept this loss in a move that could be simple and quick, then put on a dramatic show for the audience as she attempted to fight her opponent from the ground. Not to mention that it may cause her to garner more wounds that would make her recovery slower, possibly disabling her from competing in the following Exhibition rounds. No, better to bite her pride now then make a fool of herself.
”There was never a chance of me saying yes to you when you strut your scales and muscles more then I do after buying a new ao dai. Forget about it.” with her final words, and as the pressure increased on her vocal cords, Mayu took an opportunity for at least some pride out of this loss. Jamming her elbow quick and easy into the nexus of the squatting Lunarian’s legs, she heard a satisfying grunt from beside her ear as she beat the ground, effectively tapping out to the ref and calling the game.
