Things needed to change. So for once, she was going to go out, after dark, and not for patrol. She had her telescope on the roof of HITS and was doing something she hadn't properly done in a while: stargazing. It was a nice night, clear if still rather cold. So she had packed a blanket too, and of course her notebooks and other scientific implements. This was a research trip, not a patrol, and therefore it was safe.

So why was she henshined up? Aquarius wasn't sure. She figured it was probably because bad things happened at night when she wasn't. Bad things happened period, but the combination of night and being Tara had come to be dangerous in her mind. Being Aquarius was slightly less so. Even if she was acting as a beacon to youma and other superpowered people nearby, she had the ability to defend herself. That would have to be enough.

Youma dusting had become almost commonplace since Kallichore became an eternal. It was almost... too easy. But she could never forget the struggle to claw her way to where she was that night.

Taking to the roofs, the eternal simply followed signals of Chaotic energy in a patrol route that snaked through the city. She had no rhyme or reason, just a magical sixth sense and three attacks to rely on to destroy whatever she found. While she was without a target currently she kept up her pace, scanning once she landed on a building. But the scan didn't reveal what she was thinking it might.

Stopping on the building across from a school, the eternal spied someone she'd never seen before. She looked busy but in her quest to educate other senshi, Kallichore found this to be a very important opportunity. With a quick leap she landed on the next building but kept a polite distance. "Good evening." she breathed, hands curled behind her back.

Every so often, Aquarius would pause her search long enough to jot a note in the composition notebook in her lap. This was a new location to be studying the sky from, and while it wasn't nearly as different as stargazing from, say, Aquarius Outpost, it had little changes that needed to be noted. It didn't help that she hadn't really done this in a while, and going through the motions helped her to get back in the rhythm of things.

Until someone interrupted her. Groaning slightly, she looked up. It wasn't a youma, which was definitely a good thing. Not a Negaverse agent either, judging by the tiara and collar. And with all that white, she couldn't be corrupted, so she had to be a senshi. Senshi were okay. Not exactly Aquarius' favorite group of people, but okay. She offered what might have been a forced smile and got up, about to initiate introductions.

Then she caught a glimpse of the buttwings, and she frowned. "Oh no, not an eternal. That doesn't work." Doesn't work for what, it was unclear, but she was being much less welcoming than she had been only moments ago. "Your energy plus my energy equals way too much energy. Unless you've got a cat stashed in that fuku somewhere." It didn't seem to have pockets, but one could never be sure. "I'm not looking for trouble tonight, okay? Just information."

And with that she sat back down again, as if she expected the other senshi to leave just because she was being cranky.
PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 6:16 pm

Whoever she was, she wasn't someone Kallichore recognized and that made things more interesting. The eternal backed up a few steps but knew full well that such a short distance wouldn't make a damned bit of difference to anyone scanning nearby. This senshi was somewhere between super and eternal and that intrigued Kallichore quite a bit.

Hands on her hips, the eternal cocked her head slightly. "No cat, but what about me makes you think I would be here to cause trouble? Were you present at the ambush?" Or do you just distrust other senshi for some reason? There had to have been a cause but Kallichore wasn't about to go prying. She couldn't tell who this woman was or what faction she belonged to. Her energy was that of a senshi, but nebulous - the soldier in red couldn't place it.

"I'm Kallichore. Might I ask who you are? And what information you might be looking for? I'm always looking for information myself. Perhaps we could share?"

It was her version of a gesture of goodwill. The whole 'being extroverted and bubbly and nice to people' thing wasn't something Kallichore was sure she could pull off believably, so she did the next best thing - soften her demeanor as best she could. Be less... ghoulish.

"I don't think you have bad intentions," Aquarius replied, a sort of peace offering. "It's just that senshi can't help but bring trouble. I should know." Ever single bad thing that had happened to her since she was fifteen was somehow connected to senshi. And there had been a large number of bad things, some of them worse than people could imagine. By this point, it would be far stranger if her mindset wasn't twisted to the point of seeing senshi as harbingers of doom.

But the other senshi wasn't leaving, so Aquarius was forced to play hostess. She sighed and gave a mock bow, not bothering to stand again. "Aquarius, Zodiac Guard, yadda yadda, Chronos, et cetera, et cetera." She could almost hear Aries scolding her for being so lazy and disrespectful in her introduction, but she didn't really care. None of the Zodiacs were on her nice list right then- except perhaps for one or two of the nights- for reasons that were entirely her doing, though she would never admit that. That she still called herself a Zodiac at all was sort of surprising, and she briefly wondered how long she would continue to go by a title she didn't feel attached to.

"Anyway, it's nothing personal, just all this energy and-" Aquarius paused, processing Kallichore's suggestion. An eternal was an even bigger beacon than she was, but one would have to have been places and know all sorts of stuff. Perhaps this was a good thing after all. "Deal," she said instead, turning to a clean page in her notebook and changing to a red ballpoint pen. "Question one- how long have you been around? What do you know?" That was ridiculously broad, but she thought her meaning would be obvious.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 08, 2013 7:50 pm

Kallichore's eyes narrowed a bit in confusion. "Nothing but trouble are brough by senshi and yet... aren't you one? Your signal is similar but..." And then came her introduction as Aquarius, somehow connected to Chronos, one Kallichore knew only peripherally. Zodiac Guard. The eternal tucked this away for later. Others may have known about the Zodiac Guard but Kallichore was not one of those privileged people.

The barrage of questions, coupled with the notepad, made Kallichore start to chuckle.

"If I didn't know any better, I'd say we were sisters, if not twins." She covered her mouth with the back of her gloved hand until the laughter subsided. Indeed, Kallichore had carried a notepad and pen with her for many months while she was training, scouting and increasing in power. She'd written so much down which all culminated into the primer. When she had calmed her breathing, the eternal knitted her fingers together behind her back.

With a nod, she tried answering Aquarius' question as best she could. "Spring of 2011, almost two years now." came the first, and easiest, answer. The second part to the Zodiac's question was more difficult to pinpoint. "I know of what was once the Blood Moon and I know of the Dark Mirrors - I was there for their birth and survived. I was there for the ambush during the recent meeting that the Moon Queen saved us from. I know cats can help us transmit mass messages and information across the senshi cell phone network. I know of those things."

She tilted her head at Aquarius, wondering if this was satisfactory. "What do you know?"

"Yes, of course I'm one too." Aquarius shook her head; this one seemed to be a little bit slow catching on. "That's why I know. Senshi bring trouble. Being a senshi brings even more. All we can do is play damage control with what's left of our lives. For a while I thought I'd found a way around that, but... well, that's not important." Her attempt to run away from her duty hadn't exactly been her finest hour. Or, more truthfully, her finest year.

The mention of twins made her wince. "If you're looking for Gemini, you're definitely in the wrong place. I don't really talk to them much." Or any of the other Zodiacs, a fact she was both pleased with and ashamed of. It took her a moment to realize that her sensitivity to certain words made her completely misunderstand what the other senshi was saying. For a moment she considered explaining it, but then decided not to bother. If she hadn't scared this one off with her oddities already, she was probably safe.

"Spring of 2011..." Aquarius counted on her fingers, wincing again as she found the right year. "Yeah, uh, I'm not exactly well-informed about stuff that happened around then." Especially considering she had been doing everything in her power to get away from senshi stuff back then. "Like that Blood Moon thing you mentioned- no idea. The Dark Mirrors I remember from the Surrounding, but I didn't get a chance to talk with any of them before they started making a mess of the place." And then there was that whole messy, confusing battle at the end that she couldn't remember clearly. Again, not a detail she felt like sharing.

When things moved more towards the present, she held up one hand, still jotting notes with the other. "Thanks, but I got to experience that one first-hand, for all the good it did me." Being on the moon was cool, but the rest was kind of meaningless. "Are cats doing tech support now? Kind of interesting, I guess, but Zue's never around when you need him." Not that she was around when she was needed, or had tried to contact him, but Aquarius had gotten pretty good at ignoring her own shortcomings, since there were so many of them.

Then the question came back to her, and the writing hand froze. "You don't want to know what I know," she said solemnly. "I don't want to know what I know, and for a while I thought I wanted to know everything."

Kallichore turned her head to the side and regarded Aquarius warily from the corner of her eye. "You... dislike being a senshi?" she asked, finding the idea somewhat bizarre. In her experience, she thought being enlightened to the war raging in Destiny City and being blessed with the powers to fight within it was a far superior position to being ignorant and mundane. Kallichore disliked her civilian life on top of that. Being a senshi was like a ray of light in a rather gloomy metaphorical place.

She let it go, dismissing that train of thought with a wave of her hand. "The Blood Moon was a group of senshi bent on using Negaverse tactics against the Negaverse. I came in after the kidnapping and torture of high-ranking Negaverse agents. All that succeeded in doing was inciting even more violence as far as I can tell. Ares led them at that time. She was a parallel senshi, she said she was trapped here on the other side of the mirror when her and her court came to our world. They died, she set up the Blood Moon. Then disappeared. She came back some time later, gave in to Chaos and then started taking people to make her own court, which she now calls the Dark Mirrors." Kallichore explained, starting to pace back and forth across the rooftops. "Some went willingly and others did not. All I know is that I wish I could..." The eternal growled. "...do terrible things to Ares. But that's for another time."

With a sigh, the eternal turned back to Aquarius. "...you can't start a sentence like that." she said, utterly eager to pick the Zodiac's brain. "I would love to know what you know even if it's terrible. Knowing is better than being ignorant. Always."

Equally surprised for the opposite reason, Aquarius' eyes widened. "You don't?" Sure, there was no use grousing about destiny, which didn't stop her from doing it. Or outright running away. She knew that most senshi didn't have as bad a time adjusting as she did, and she could even dimly remember the early days of her time as a senshi- both times, since she'd had the odd experience of multiple awakenings- where everything had seemed new and delightful.

Boy, that had sure worn off fast.

She listened with interest to the story of the Blood Moon, keeping her face blank to avoid displaying distaste or confusion. She could see why others would be willing to go to such lengths to make things stop. If such a group had approached her, she couldn't be totally sure that she would have rejected their invitation, not after everything the Negaverse had done to her. It seemed that Kallichore had experienced something similar with this group, judging by her tone, which made her feel slightly better about missing this whole debacle.

"I've heard of parallel senshi, but they're not all evil, right?" There was a key point she was missing here, but she couldn't place it. Why did she have to tune out while hearing the parallel story the first time? "I know Zirconia mentioned Ares, but she didn't talk about the Dark Mirrors. Are all of the good parallel senshi dead?" Man, no wonder that cat was so depressed. Those were troubles on par with her own, and she didn't think things like that lightly.

Now they were back to Aquarius' least favorite topic. "Oh yeah? I just did," she countered. Then she sighed and looked Kallichore in the eye. "I used to think so too. I can't honestly say that I do anymore. All knowledge has its cost, and sometimes the price is higher than its actual worth." For her, most senshi knowledge fell into that category. "If you still really want to know, fine, but give me a minute to sort everything out in my head." Not that she didn't remember everything in chilling detail already. More accurately, she wanted minute to mentally prepare herself to relive everything for the umpteenth time. If she was ready for it, maybe it wouldn't hurt as much this time.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 15, 2013 7:32 pm

Kallichore shrugged at Aquarius' surprise. "I don't like my civilian life much, truth be told." she murmured. Sure, things were getting a little better but being able to make a difference and actively seeing that difference did quite a bit to bolster Kallichore's otherwise failing self-confidence. She was too hard on herself, blamed herself for things beyond her control. She couldn't be held responsible for what Ares did, or what Chaos did, because she didn't have the power to hold a candle to them alone. She shook her head.

"Yes, as far as I know. Zirconia is still alive and uncorrupted and Ares... and there was another woman. Dark hair, short. She never spoke much but I remember her being there with Ares. She must've been a parallel too. Funny, I almost forgot about her. But to answer your question, Zirconia says they're all dead or corrupted. Only she remains." The eternal crossed her arms. "All the senshi Ares brings into the fold bow to her."

All knowledge has its cost, and sometimes the price is higher than its actual worth.

Kallichore chuckled and smiled to herself. Aquarius was singing words she loved to hear, really. "I like to think I can wrap my mind around forbidden knowledge well enough, considering my sphere and civilian interests. And perhaps," she offered with a shrug, "it will help ease your burden? If someone else knows, someone outside the Zodiacs, maybe you won't feel so alone?" If alone you feel at all, I suppose.

Ah, that cleared things up a little. "I can't say I'm totally thrilled with mine either," Aquarius admitted. Which was due in no small part to the way she had sabotaged her life when trying to escape from being a senshi. To her, everything came back to that day that cats started talking. Being a senshi destroyed everything else. This Kallichore was lucky she hadn't realized that yet, but it was only a matter of time.

Hearing about the parallels made her sadder still. That was a court that was in even worse shape than the Zodiacs. No wonder Zirconia had been upset. Aquarius jotted down another note in the margins of her notebook, a reminder to ask about the dark-haired mystery woman when they met up again, and then closed the book. "It's not forbidden knowledge," she said, a bit surprised that her words had been interpreted that way. "That wouldn't bother me so much. It's just... it's just bad, okay? But if you really need to know, fine."

Aquarius closed her eyes again. When she opened them this time, she seemed to be seeing beyond the skyline in front of them.

"Once upon a time, there was a little senshi. Of course, she didn't start out knowing that she was a senshi- she found out when she was fifteen years old. A talking cat came and found her, and other senshi, and gathered them into a group called the Zodiac Guard. But not long after that happened, an evil man named Charonite kidnapped the Zodiac Princess and held her hostage. The Zodiac Guard went off to rescue her, but it was a trap, and the building they were in... exploded. And so the little senshi died the first time, along with most of the rest of her court."

She tried to blink away the flames that clouded her vision. Telling her story in the third person was supposed to help her get some distance, supposed to keep her from being overwhelmed. She wasn't sure it was working.

"But the Zodiac Princess had a Prince, a brave man. He traded his life for the rebirths of his princess and her court. His sacrifice paved the way for their revival, but it did not go as planned. Charonite found them and lured them into another trap, this one disguised as a school. The little senshi went about what she thought was her daily life until one day, during a normal club meeting, she was forced to play a game. A game with a loaded gun and a single bullet. The club members fought and cried and when one of them finally got the bullet, the others thought it was finally over. Instead, the one who was shot changed into a horrible monster and killed the others while the little senshi watched, and then it killed her as well. And so the little senshi died the second time."

The gunshot echoed in her ears, and she hesitated for a few breaths, stuck in a moment three years in the past.

The color drained out of Kallichore's face and she took a few steps forward of her own accord, silent as she listened. This was a story she never knew about and it was never hinted at even once. She'd known about the Zodiacs peripherally, known Chronos only as a princess present at the purification meeting but that was the extent of her knowledge on the subject. The Zodiacs didn't come up often in conversation. Many didn't even know of their existence at all. The eternal bowed her head in silence in honor of those fallen, revived and then fallen again.

But... weren't the Zodiacs still around? Or was Aquarius a different Aquarius that the senshi who had died previously? It was all very confusing.

"So much death and rebirth... I can see how being a senshi would be more pain than anything else if that were the case with me. But..." She squinted as if looking into a bright light. "Would it not be a blessing? Or perhaps a testament to how strong one can be if this Charonite cannot kill the Zodiacs permanently? Surely it is a great loss, one I cannot put words to, to lose a prince. I had no idea such a thing could happen. Royalty is a relatively new subject as far as I am concerned..."

She turned away for a moment, nodding. "...no, I cannot fathom what that would be like. To die and be reborn, only to die again. But..." And then she turned back again.

"You are here again, right? Or is a different Zodiac born each time? ...or rather, does it matter? Maybe I shouldn't ask. My apologies, Aquarius."

"The little senshi awoke again, of course." Silence was even more unbearable than the story itself, so Aquarius kept talking. "She was revived not as her human self, but as a youma, with a craving for human flesh. With the help of an ancient queen, her humanity was returned, but it was not until the entire Zodiac Guard was assembled that they were able to break the curse and secure their freedom from the trap. Today, most people know it as the Barren Pines Organ Ring. There are other survivors, but only the Zodiacs know the truth."

She would have gone on, but this time Kallichore decided to fill the silence. It startled her, hearing someone else's voice, and the faraway look in her eyes cleared as she blinked again. "No, we can definitely be killed permanently." The distance in her voice was gone, and now she just sounded tired. "Aries- she was our captain- is gone. Sagittarius is gone. We've already burned through our second chances. And for what? To run around aimlessly?" That was untrue, and she knew it. The Zodiacs did have an aim, in theory. In practice, she wasn't quite sure about that.

At the question of who she was, she laughed hollowly. "No, it's all me. Even the old guy from way back when was me." Aquarius couldn't remember when she had died, but for a senshi, thirty was old. For a Zodiac, thirty was downright decrepit. "It matters to me, you know. If anyone had offered to take my place, I would have let them." And if she'd had the ability to forsake her power, knowing it would pass to some unsuspecting person, she knew she would have taken it.

"Now you think you shouldn't ask?" She smiled wryly and folded her arms. "What happened to 'knowing is better than being ignorant' and all that?" Yes, she was actually being smug about this. Cheap thrills were all she had at this point.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 25, 2013 7:59 pm

Kallichore stood by in silence for a while, taking in what she could from Aquarius' story. Of course it would not be as terrifying to her because she didn't live and die through it. She didn't know what it was like to be a Zodiac, to become a youma and then be human again. When words found her, the eternal raised her head. "Thank you for your story." she began, keeping her voice low and even. "...it truly is better to know than not and even though your story is terrible, I am appreciative to know it."

She sighed. "I wonder if we can use your experience to help us defeat Chaos? Brute force doesn't seem to work, we can't seem to unite under one banner. Even the royals have no idea what to do. But you Zodiacs, you stuck together no matter what, didn't you? Even if some of you were gone..." You wouldn't come back unless there was some greater power there, right?

Or am I overthinking this?

Kallichore shook her head to rid herself of confusing thoughts. "My apologies. It was painful for you to explain the story. I'm afraid I don't have much to compensate you, but I'll tell you everything I know about the Dark Mirrors if it would be useful to you."

There was more to the story, as there was to most stories, but Aquarius was rather relieved to have been let off the hook there. She listened to Kallichore and shrugged at her thanks. "Maybe it's for the best. If you know, you don't need to experience it for yourself." Not that anyone really needed to experience death to know that it sucked. Though thinking back to the meeting, she wonder if some of the attitudes there would benefit from a bout of dying. That was a dangerous thought.

"Sticking together is good, in theory." In practice, Aquarius was the worst person to talk about teamwork, because she really wasn't very good at it. At least, not where fighting was concerned. "It's a simple concept, but it's not easy to execute. Or weren't you paying attention at that sad excuse for a meeting?" She rolled her eyes, thinking about how many times she had wanted to hit someone. "It was a barroom brawl even before the agents of Chaos intervened." If they couldn't even talk peaceably, how could they ever hope to fight together in any effective way?

For a moment she was gone again, her mind filled with smoke and fear. Then she was back, shaking her head. "You seem to think that all information is useful." Aquarius smiled, not mockingly, but she was clearly amused. "Let's test that theory." She opened her notebook again, turned to a blank page, and nodded, indicating that she was ready.
