It had been a slow set of days over at Fancy a Change and Marlin was glad to finally shut up shop for the evening. It wasn’t that he disliked his job – in fact quite the contrary – however this close after the Christmas break, there just weren’t that many people out there looking for costumes.

Today at least there’d been a slight break in the monotony that an empty store brought when a family had come in looking for a costume for their nine year old, but the previous days had been completely customer-less to the point where he’d ended up closing shop early.

Tonight was one of the nights that the Take a Bow theatre group met over at the Firebird – in fact the first such meeting of the group since Christmas. It had been decided before Christmas that their next production was going to be a musical – an experimental piece that was kind of like Little Red Riding Hood meet Cinderella that they’d decided to call Into the Woods.

Today they were doing sign-ups and although Marlin had no intention for trying to audition for a stage part, he was looking forward to watching those who were audition. After making sure that everything was properly locked up he headed over in the direction of the Firebird. It was about a ten minute or so walk and one that Marlin generally made three evenings a week.

Hope this works as a start, let me know if I need to change anything :3

Lily was also headed for the Firebird. She had decided that she needed something to do with her time while she wasn't in school, even though she suspected that it would continue into the school semester. Either way she found the musical and decided that it would be the thing she would do. She wanted to make a name for herself and she didn't think the musical would hurt at all.

Tonight was sign up and Lily had made sure she would not miss it. She wanted to try for the female Lead and she wasn't sure how many sign up they would take, for the ballet it had always been her teacher who told her where to be and what time for things. Now it was she who had to do it herself.

She parked and climbed out of her car excited and ready to see what this new opportunity would bring her although she of course wasn't expecting much tonight. Still it was a start.

It didn’t take long for Marlin to reach the pretty red-brick building. The Firebird was so named for the metal statue of a firebird that stood near to the glass doors at the entrance and was a community centre. During the day there was a crèche for parents to leave their children and a café where the coffee wasn’t half bad. There was a jazz café on Tuesday afternoons and of course three evenings a night the Take a Bow theatre group met in the hall towards the back.

Although their productions (usually two, but occasionally three a year) were held at a local theatre, having the meetings at the Firebird was cheaper than having to pay the rates at the theatre.

Reaching the entrance to the Firebird at the same time as a woman with pretty curly short red hair, Marlin held one of the two glass doors open for her with a friendly “After you.”

Lily went to open the door, but it was opened by a blonde guy. She gave a small smile to him, "thank you," she said softly. She walked in, bundled in a dark grey pea coat, tights, and flats and stepped over to the side stopping and looking slightly confused as she looked for some sort of sign as to where she was suppose to go.

She shook her head to herself and frowned before deciding it would probably be best to ask for directions. She looked around to spot the blonde guy again, so she could ask him.

"Excuse me," she called softly, "um I'm a little turned about. I am suppose to be here about a play, but I'm not exactly sure where to go. Would you help me? This is if you could."

She stood with a small smile on her face waiting quietly for an answer.

“You’re welcome.” Entering in after the woman Marlin started to walk down the corridor towards the hall, but hadn’t taken more than a few steps before being stopped by the woman’s voice.

Turning he gave her a friendly nod “Do you mean the auditions for Into the Woods? If so then sure – the Take a Bow group are running them in the hall by the back” he smiled before adding “I’m actually heading that way myself.”

Lily was very happy to have run into someone who was actually headed in the same direction as she was. She really should have paid more attention when she found out about the play. "Oh," she said making her way over to the guy, "I didn't even realize they were doing auditions already. Guess I should have checked my dates. I thought it was just sign up. Thank for letting me know, this is my first time trying a musical, I'm a bit turned out."

It all came out in a bit of a rambling, Lily feeling slightly embarrassed, but still she smiled and held out a hand. "I'm Lily, Liliana Jacobs. Sorry if I ramble a bit. I'm kind of nervous."

She fully intended to walk to the back with the guy and would follow him, letting him lead the way.

Marlin shook his head, looking faintly embarrassed “Actually no you’re right – it’s just sign-ups tonight. The auditions are in a few weeks.” He shook the offered hand “Nice to meet you Lily, I’m Marlin, Marlin Joanson.”

He moderated his pace to make it easy to keep up to as he started walking the corridor, absently glancing at a few noticeboards. “Out of curiosity what are you planning to sign-up for?”

Kaori_luv
my bad. could have sworn that I typed sign-up earlier, hope this an okay save
PostPosted: Wed Jan 16, 2013 2:05 pm

Lily shook his hand, giving a small giggle, her vain attempts to hide her amusement failing at the moment. "It's nice to meet you Marlin. I like your name. And it's okay, rather a relief, now I feel less nervous. I've got more time to prepare."

She walked along with Marlin, shoes clicking on the floor, as she walked. She spaced for a moment, but looked to Marlin when he spoke. "Oh I'm going to go for the lead female part. I really love to sing and everyone tells me I'm really good."

In truth she knew she was good, it was rather predestined for her to be as such, being the senshi of song, she thought. She wondered breifly if there was ever a senshi of song that couldn't sing.

"My sister has ever put several videos of me singing on youtube. Um, are you planning to sign up as well?"

Marlin shook his head “No I’m pretty much here to watch tonight” he smiled as he went on to add “I guess you could say I’m already signed up – not for a stage part, but I sort out the costumes” the smile turned into an amused grin “And I act as an extra pair of hands for the guys who do the scenery.”

Marlin enjoyed helping the guys out with the scenery. Much as he loved working with costumes, he found it both fun and satisfying doing his part to help bring the scenery that the cast were going to use to life.

“I’ll be watching at the auditions too.” He and some of the guys sometimes went to the café to grab something to drink – well at least as long as they didn’t finish too late given the café closed up at seven on all days except Sunday. “Good luck with going for the lead.”

Lily smiled happily and nodded as they walked and talked lightly. “Oh that really amazing. Guess if I get a part you'll be the one to talk to about costumes huh? And you help with the scenery too, sounds like you're really talented huh?”

It seemed like maybe she had made a new friend or at least someone to talk to if she did end up working on the play. They'd probably see it each other at least a little bit, it was nice thought because Lily loved to make new friends.

She flushed when he said he be watching and wondered how many other people would be watching. She sung often and she'd done karaoke at Hindsight, but that didn't stop her from being nervous. “Don't say that,” she laughed lightly, “I'm nervous enough as is. I love to sing and do it a lot, like karaoke, but never for a musical. It's exciting to try, but rather nerve racking.”

She nodded and smiled at the wish of good luck, “thank you. Hopefully I won't mess up or something.”

“Ah not really” Marlin shook his head. “My parents own a costume shop so I’m pretty used to handling costumes” he gave another amused grin “And the acting as an extra pair of hands for the guys who do the scenery is actually pretty literal – planning it is Chloe and Steve’s brain child” he added.

The pair roped people in as needed to help them get things set up and Steve could occasionally be a little on the bossy side at times. The two had come up with some pretty fun ideas so Marlin didn’t mind the occasional bout of stress-induced bossiness on Steve’s part.

He gave a friendly smile and a shake of his head at Lily’s comment about not messing up “I’m sure you won’t, I’m sure you’ll do fine.”

Reaching the door to the hall, he pushed it open for Lily “They’re doing the sign ups at the table by the wall.”

Kaori_luv
Sorry for taking so long with this

Lily gave a small laugh and nodded, "still its good to feel useful I'm sure and always good to be able to do something you are good at." She would know, she wouldn't give up singing for the world, even though she'd not totally loved ballet at first, she'd not give up that either. Both were invaluable.

Lily gave a nervous smile, "thank you. I hope you are right. I really need to be able to do stuff like this if I want to make it as a singer. Won't do me much good to freeze up in front of the audience." She have a small giggle before walking through the door that was pushed open for her with a "thank you".

She nodded about the sign ups, but didn't move, "After sign ups, what goes on then." She really wasn't sure and she really didn't want to make a fool of herself. Was she suppose to sign up and leave or should she mingle a bit? That had been how she met Paris, right, but that was at an audition.

“It’s pretty just the sign ups tonight” Marlin admitted. “The group’s going to go out together once it’s over. To the café here if it’s still open, or if not there’s a few places nearby where the food’s okay so we’ll probably go to one of them.”

It had been a while since the regular group had met up since the holiday break and it would be their chance to catch up with each other. “You’re welcome to come along with us if you like once we’re done for tonight” he offered. It was an open offer – anyone signing up tonight was free to come along once sign-ups had been done.

He added “It'll be pretty casual though” it wouldn't be any fancy – just the standard group following their usual pattern of grabbing a bite before going their separate ways, but the more the merrier right? They'd probably do the same thing when the auditions came along too.

Lily nodded listening to Marlin with a soft smile feeling a bit excited about the possibility of for once just goofing off for the night. She would definitely come to grab a snack and some tea.

"I'd love to come along. I mean if I get the part I'll need to get to know the cast and crew right. Why not start now?" Eager that she definitely was, and friendly as well. It was just in her nature. She looked over to the sign up tables once more.

"I'm going to sign up now, but we can talk more once I'm done if you like. Maybe tell me more about the Take a Bow group," she said before moving over to the sign up tables and grabbing up a pen and waiting her turn to sign up and answer a few question.

She happily chatted with those around her, easily in her element at the moment. Ever the social butterfly she was.

"Sure" Marlin said with a nod as Lily walked over to the tables that had been set up for sign ups. He turned as a voice from behind him hailed him a cheerful smile on his face as he saw Chloe, he chatted with her for a bit, totally unsurprised when Steve joined them after a bit given that where one was the other usually wasn't that far behind - well at least not when it came to group meet ups.

He left them chatting when someone else called his name, and caught up with a few more people absently glancing over at the people signing up from time to time. There seemed to be a few people there, which would hopefully mean a good turn out for the auditions.

He was looking forward to working on the costumes for this one, what he'd read of the plot seemed like it would be fun to work with too.

For the most part though Marlin was pretty much happy to be catching up with the gang after the Christmas break.
