The park was unusually quiet. The growing chill in the air had chased off those who preferred to walk under the branches in the warm sun; and the falling leaves seemed a nuisance to many of the humans; Maneki Neko and their Spirit Guide companions far outnumbered the larger occupants of the shared space.
Ranza liked it like this, though. The leaves were an intricate mottle of golds, reds and browns; and the falling, the death and the decay, were entwined in his mind with the eventual promise of spring, of rebirth, new life and growth. He lay along a branch of his favourite climbing tree, watching the few individuals who either didn't mind the cold breeze, or were willing to endure it. His own sleek fur was puffed up for warmth; but he knew that soon, he would have to join them, moving his body to keep warm. For now, though, his green and blue eyes roamed the park, taking in the sights of the falling leaves, the wind trying to pull away those still clinging to their perches. His tail occasionally twitched when a nearer leaf caught his eye.
It was a beautiful time of year to him- although, since he managed to find beauty in most of the year, that alone didn't mean much.

A black and gold neko gently padded her way across the park's ground on her own. If not for the blanket of crunchy, dry leaves, she could, most likely, go unnoticed. She paused now and then to briefly admire a fallen leaf that caught her eye; mostly reds and oranges.
It was November's first autumn here and, for many reasons, was, by far, her favorite. The drastic temperatures between night and day, the colors, smells.. she even liked the feeling of the wind; as long as it was a soft breeze and not a sharp gust.
Having wandered for a long while, she decided to sit near a tree for a break.

Ranza's eyes were suddenly caught by a leaf falling very close to his face. He froze; his tail stiffened mid-twitch, as his wide eyes watched it flutter.
A sudden breeze caught it, fluttering it away from his face and closer to his paws and, as though possessed by a will not his own, they twitched, before trying to snag the leaf between them. The movement caused it to dance upwards, away, teasing him; and his short tail started flicking madly back and forth as he reacted, lunging after it, trying to pin it to the ground.
He had completely forgotten that he wasn't standing on the ground, he was lying on a tree branch. Predictably, the sudden, sharp movement did little to keep him balanced and there was a moment where he realised exactly where he was- and what was about to happen- with complete clarity. Instead of focusing on trying to right himself, he instinctively buried his claws into the bark as his body wobbled and he slipped.
He let out a "mrowp" of surprise and impact as his front claws scrabbled and held, and his back flopped off the branch to hang, comically, as if to point out his absurd behaviour. He lazily kicked them once or twice- very ready to be amused at his own expense- before wriggling his body for momentum and heaving with his front legs.
He pulled himself back onto the branch and flopped there, letting out a noise that was part exasperation and a larger part amusement; his back legs now hanging either side of the branch he was resting on. He huffed, catching his breath from his sudden and very unexpected exertion, when he moved his head- resting on the actual branch- and gained a view of the park, and a shape of black and gold on the ground.

She sat for a while, eyes closed, enjoying the sun's rays, the dwindling song of birds, the breeze ruffling her fur, the seemingly random rustle of leaves, the slight commotion above her...
...What's that? November opened her eyes and blinked, looking up. Noticing the scrambling neko up in the tree, she immediately stood and backed away a few steps, to give it room just in case it fell.
When it pulled itself up, she stepped toward the tree to resume her spot, only to freeze when she noticed that he saw her. From where she was, he looked a pretty brown. Or was it 'handsome'..?
Realizing that she was probably staring, she slowly sat and started looking around. "Ah.. Hi."

"...Whoops." Ranza tucked his paws back onto the branch and stood, stepping to a lower one with far more grace than his previous scramble. "I guess you saw that, huh?"
From his new vantage point, he was able to get a better view of the female beneath him. A black coat on which striking gold markings zig-zagged, she was an eye-catching sight; and the fact that he hadn't noticed her until he had almost fallen on her was a reminder to Ranza that keeping his eyes on the clouds and day-dreaming might lead to missed opportunites. Like a new friend.
...Or accidents like almost falling off his branch. He snickered.
"Not my finest moment," he admitted. "I'm really sorry if I startled you. Apparently it's not a good idea to try to catch leaves whilst you're balanced on a branch, who knew!" He settled down on his new branch, watching her with an open and curious, though friendly, gaze. He wanted to see if his company was wanted or unwelcome before he pestered her further; although he was always happy for company. Even if that company saw him make a fool of himself.
Actually, if the company had a good sense of humour, maybe especially then.
