Name: Viveca
Nickname: Viv
Species: Arctic Fox
Gender: Cis Female; she/her/hers
Stage: Major

Personality: There are many stereotypes that foxes fall under; conniving, mistrustful, filled with spite, seducers, and an exceptionally cunning mind. While many of these traits are blown out of proportion, it must be acknowledged that they are based on fact and Viveca is a fox through and through. She has keen senses, a sharp wit, good humor, and she knows how to get what she wants. Viveca is largely self reliant but, though she prefers not to depend on others, she still enjoys company, both honestly and because people have their uses. Many people may get the impression she merely thinks of others as pawns, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Viveca does prefer to keep her emotions at arms length, but within her bosom beats a large heart filled with affection and sentiment. She adapts quickly to new situations and is always thinking on her feet.

Like her thick fur, designed to keep her safe and warm, Viveca also has a figuratively thick skin and insults roll off her back with ease (sometimes twisted back on the other with her sharp tongue). While some may cut deeper, she is rarely affected for long because she knows opinions are mostly harmless and, let's be honest, her opinions of herself are more important than anyone else's. That isn't to say she's full of herself or will ignore all critique thrown her way, but Viveca does have a healthy amount of self esteem and a budding ego. Due to her exceptional hearing, it is very easy for her to eavesdrop – often without trying – which makes gossip and overhearing conversations a part of her life she has come to embrace. She does little to hide the fact she knows things she ought not to but, ever the playful sort, she will keep her secrets. It pays to know a little bit about everyone around you, after all, and to have some hidden Aces up her sleeves.

Viveca falls into a light trickster personality; while many foxes are characterized as being almost fiendish in their pranks, Viveca's are always lighthearted. She enjoys making herself laugh, certainly, but her jokes are so much more fulfilling when she isn't the only one having a chuckle. She isn't fond of mean spirited pranks and will openly express her distaste for those who use them. All the same, she is still a bit tricksy and isn't above telling white lies or fibbing, especially if it will keep her out of trouble or gain her favor. Viveca can be quite the persuasive vixen, but she is far from a femme fatal and would rather have others get their hands dirty for her. If one does manage to get roped into her schemes, don't fear, for she will offer some reward but often it is more meager or spontaneous than anyone would hope. After all, a quick peck on the cheek in gratitude does little in the long run but the warm fuzzy feeling of a kiss from a pretty girl may be enough for now.

Dialog: Burlywood

Original Entry

Everyone in the facility was wrapped up tight, snuggled in their warm wool sweaters both cute and hideous. Outside, the weather was perfect for her and matched the sheen of her coat – a fact which made her smile perhaps more than necessary but her eyes kept the grin from looking too mischievous. The HyTech tree was large, imposing, and entirely too attractive for its own good. Viveca's eyes were alight with curiosity and all of the packages beneath it, aglow with mysterious wrappings that reflected the gorgeous lighting scheme the employees and other Hytes had come up with. Each one, big or small, was more alluring than the next, and the fox soon found herself resting comfortably upon her knees before them.

Clawed hands daintily curled around a small, flat package and lifted it from the floor. Both ears were cupped and swiveling to and fro, surveying all sounds nearby. She was careful not to jostle the wrapping, not to call attention to herself, and as she brought the package closer, Viveca closed her eyes and took in the lingering scent of forest musk. Another, one larger and more flashily wrapped, smelled of the sea.

The tags, she found, all had little annotations. They included the recipient, the sender (Santa), and a second name (with love from [blank]). It made things fairly simple, to keep in the spirited tradition of Santa Claus (without having to rely on him too much, the poor geezer), as well as making sure gifts could be discussed or returned with those who had the receipts. All in all, it was a rather full proof system, one she found clever and adorable all at once. She might have had more time to think on that level of cuteness, had she not been swept up in trying to locate a gift for herself.

One ear tightened to the left at the sound of approaching hooves. Viveca calmly set the package back in its place and rose to her feet, taking the time to dust her knees and fluff her hair while someone stepped beside her.

”Everything all right, Miss Viveca?” Rudolph asked, childish voice belying his authority. Even his size, being a Lyte, was deceiving.

Viveca chuckled, stretching her arms above her head and giving her tail a playful flick in his direction. ”Absolutely perfect,” she purred, glancing to his vibrant amber eyes, ”And with you? Is everything going according to plan?”

Even without mouths, they managed to speak loud enough to be heard. Some did, anyway. Others were as mute as you might imagine, but certain Lytes such as Rudolph certainly had their ways about them.

”Going well. Everyone's patience will have paid off in a few hours. Make any last minute donations?” he asked pointedly, gaze drifting between her furred hands and the packages she had recently touched.

A quick shake of her head gave her short curls bounce and she smiled pleasantly down to the small reindeer. ”Not this time,” she cooed, bending her knees and wrapping her arms around her legs, ”I thought a gift was missing a tag and was going to bring it to you but – silly me – it was just hiding. Nothing to worry about.”

Rudolph gave a quiet snort, then a twitch of his ear.

”You'll let me know if you see any suspicious activity around the presents, won't you?” another pointed gaze followed his words. He was always the cautious sort.

Viveca, undaunted, gave him a playful salute. Apparently it was good enough for the reindeer, or he pretended it was, as Rudolph trudged off soon after. No doubt he would be keeping his eyes and ears open and, certainly, his agents were everywhere.

When it came to brains, most Lytes weren't as intelligent as Rudolph himself and Bytes were even less. That was why, in the long run, if you needed to do some innocent reconnaissance, it was best to go with the most naive creatures scuttling through the halls. Viveca knew how to bridge connections with even the simplest of folk and this was most definitely an important matter.

Not an hour after her talk with Rudolph, did she return to the hall with the large tree. Nestled comfortably in her arms were two Lytes, Dasher and Prancer, two of Rudolph's naughtier agents within the Inquisition. Before they reached the tree, Viveca halted near one of the benches and sat down with the two who gazed up at her with their large doe eyes that looked both innocent and impish. She smiled and cooed, teasing their hair gently with a claw, tickling them, snuggling them to her bosom. Once finished, the two boys were suitably flustered and raring to go.

”I'll make good on my promise but only if you make good on yours.” She kept her voice light and a smile in place, a genuine one but in her eyes was a hint of warning. ”You'll get all the snuggles, cookies, and hot cocoa you can handle – all the work done by me – if you can help me tonight.”

Like wee babes, they hung on every word.

”It's very important. There is a gift in there addressed to me but it isn't for me at all! The only problem is, I don't know what the wrapping paper looks like nor who it rightfully belongs to without knowing what's inside.” The fib was thick but their fingers clung to her furred hands in desperation at such a woeful situation. ”How sad would it be for someone to have a gift meant for them but it be addressed to someone else? We can't have them knowing that on Christmas, of all things! If it happened to me, I would be devastated! No, no, it won't do at all. It isn't in the spirit. So, what I need you two to do is carefully--” she stressed this with a more serious look than usual ”--peek inside the gifts. Don't rip anything, don't cut anything, if anything does then you have to tape it back up. This is absolutely a top secret mission. Do you understand?”

Through the whole story, the two Lyte reindeer looked so sullen as they glanced between one another. Terrible indeed! On the final note, however, while one wiped his sniffling nose and the other scratched his head, there was some uncertainty.

Viveca knew what it was immediately. ”I'm so sorry, darlings, but we can't tell Rudolph. You know what he'll do! Make a big announcement that there was a problem with the gifts, everyone will feel uneasy when they should be having the time of their lives, and then he'll put Christmas on hold until the problem's sorted! We can't have that, so we must do this under cover. You agree?”

At this, the two reindeer brightened and nodded enthusiastically. They might be naughty Lytes but they weren't about to let Christmas be ruined for even a single person, let alone everyone just because of one minor slip up. It didn't occur to them to think of how Viveca knew there was an issue or how Santa could have possibly made a mistake but that was the beauty of the Lytes; she knew they wouldn't think that deeply into matters, not when there were promises of cookies and cuddles.

Soon the two scurried down her legs from the bench and dodged along the floor, passing through legs and beneath furniture. Rudolph was slowly making his rounds. Dasher and Prancer knew better than to let themselves be seen. The two ducked behind one of the tall pillars supporting the hall, listening intently for the slow and soft clopping of Rudolph's small hooves to fade. When they were sure it had, Dasher peeked out and saw neither hide nor hair of their superior reindeer. He gave Prancer a quick hand signal and the two were off, diving amid packages, boxes, and bags. There they rested for a few moments, listening, observing, and only when things seemed to be proceeding as normal did they chance movement.

Quietly, quickly, the two scrambled over big boxes, squishy wrappings, around low hanging branches, and occasionally knocked their horns on ornaments and lights. Their bright eyes scanned every card, every note, but there were so many it was hard to find even a single gift addressed to the arctic fox. It took several minutes for them to locate their first one which was a fairly small package wrapped in bright blue and silver paper.

The gift was a flat, rectangular box taller than it was long and about the size of two Hyte hands put together. Dasher carefully set to work, finding a weak spot in the tape by gently prodding beneath it. Their hands were small enough that they were able to peel back the tape from the paper without ripping any edges. Unfortunately, some coloration did come off on the tape but it was still sticky enough that they could reapply it later. Through teamwork, one reindeer held the wrappings while the other took hold of the box and carefully pulled it out from its bindings. No longer trapped, the box was plain and white with nothing stopping them from looking inside. At least, nothing on the box itself was hindering their progress.

When the lid was lifted overhead and the two got a good gander at the contents, someone cleared their throat. Someone familiar and in a position of power.

Rudolph stood akimbo, whip rolled in one hand and a stern look on his face. His eyes were bright and glowing with authority, which caused the two to shrink back from their prize immediately. The lid fell into place with a dull thump before he approached. Of course, the two were ordered to wrap it back up and were put on the Naughty List. For all intents and purposes, it just meant they would be getting their gifts later, usually the next day, but that was enough punishment when literally everyone else had something to look forward to in a few short hours and it would be all they were talking about.

Once that was settled and the two reindeer were suitably punished, Rudolph escorted them out of the hall and Viveca followed suit.

”Oh my, what happened?” she asked, feigning ignorance.

”None of your concern, Miss Viveca, please return to the party or your quarters.”

”I'm doing that just now. Sorry we seem to be taking a similar path.”

Rudolph merely grumbled under his breath and silenced followed until they were at a split and Viveca departed from them to keep up the illusion of truth. Dasher and Prancer were sequestered, put into time out for the night, and Rudolph set to work on a more intense guard duty around the tree. That certainly wouldn't be happening again right under his nose, but some other seasonal naughtiness would. Viveca had kept a vigilant ear up to her door, waiting until his familiar steps faded into silence, before slinking out her bedroom door. Her sensitive nose lead her down the trail of their scents and she came to the room where they were hidden.

That night, in celebration of a nearly completed mission, Viveca kept her promise. Though they would not be getting all of the treats and cuddles they could handle for the rest of Winter, they would certainly be getting them for the rest of the night. Cozied up by the fire, cookies small and large baked fresh, with tiny mugs and a single large filled with warm cocoa, lined with sprinkled marshmallows and dashes of whipped cream, the three lost themselves in the scents and spirit of the holiday. At least the night wasn't a total loss.

And still...

A wry grin formed on Viveca's face when Dasher crept up to her ear and whispered. She couldn't help the rosy color rising to her cheeks as she laughed.

”Socks? At least Santa doesn't think I deserve coal!” The mission, it turned out, was a complete success. She didn't care what she received, as long as she got something.
