Sweet Surrender was super stoked! Together with his almost-cousin, Fab, he was going to surprise his Dad's best friend, Nega. Or since TACO told him that Nega was his "Bro 4 Lyfe", Surrender liked to call him Uncle Nega. Which made Haute Couture his cousin in spirit. Not to be confused with the numerous half-cousins he legitimately had, and kind of cousins that were on the way from his dad's first girlfriend's new hook up. Although he was sure he was related somehow to Fab because his older half-siblings' mom was their aunt. And then there was something about it either being via the "natural way," which TACO said should be the goal every time you talk to a lady, and via science, which TACO called "devil witchcraft" that "stopped him from getting down".
It was confusing.
The plan was since Nega was always out hunting, that they'd give him a break, and catch dinner for him. They arranged to meet on the precipice of the woods, where they were guaranteed to find a ton of birds. Big birds, small birds, loud birds, stealthy birds, and birds that could rip off a babben's head. Surrender wanted to avoid that last one. He was pretty sure he would encounter that last one though, as he had horrible luck. Really, his goal today was just to not mess up. Hopefully Fab would know what he was doing.

Fab was way less confused about their family ties, but every bit as excited as cousin Sweet Surrender at the plan they'd cooked up. He'd been with his dad into the woods more than a few times, seen him set the traps - it all looked so easy, of course he could do it too! As soon as he could sneak past his parents, he'd taken the scrap ends of rope from his dad's shed and lit out to meet his cous'.
He flew low around an outer stand of trees and spotted Sweet, and called out, "Look out belooow!" as he swooped down to land. The thin rope wasn't very heavy, but it made a lot of drag, and it threw Fab off enough that he tumbled in the dirt instead of landing gracefully like his maman taught him. He stood up unharmed, and frowned at his dirtied coat. It wasn't a big deal, he tried to tell himself - Papa came home covered in a lot worse sometimes. What's a little dirt to a hardened hunter of the wild woods? Nothing.
But it was a lot to the off-white pegasus colt. He flicked the dirt off his flanks meticulously with his wings as he said, "Good mourning, cous'. I trust I did not keep you waiting long?"

That entrance was stunning! Well, almost. But it was still a lot better than he could have ever done. Surrender was for the sure least talented member of the brood.
"I-I-I wasn't waiting long at all!" He grabbed a handkerchief out of his knapsack and handed it to his cousin. "Here, you can use this to get the dirt out. I only blew my nose on it once, so it's still mostly clean. I don't have a cold or anything."
The woods looked intimidating. They were every bit the dark and scary you'd expect them to be. It was as if the sun was afraid to go in there also. He looked around nervously... then again, everything he did was a little nervous and necrotic. It would be nice if a bird just fell out of the sky, but that wasn't going to happen. Surrender nudged up closer to Fab, "Say, you've done this before you said, right?"

Fab accepted the gently used hanky with what remained of his grace and dignity and began scrubbing furiously. He was intently focused on that until Sweet bumped into him. At the other colt's question, he looked up in a sort of nonplussed way, and agreed, "Oh, yes, loads of times." It was true, at least about being in the forest. It wasn't as scary as it used to be to Fab - well, most of the time. The overcast skies and thickly twined branches left eerily little light at ground level. He hadn't made the traps his father used before, but they were just made of knotted rope and branches - how hard could it be?
He passed the handkerchief back and stepped towards the forest with his rope in hoof. "C'mon," he murmured back over his shoulder, "let's go."

The two ventured into the forest. Surrender trembled a little bit as they went deeper and deeper. It seemed like the trees were completely blocking out the sun. He shuddered as he looked at all the spooky shapes the branches were formed in.
"Where is a good place to set the trap?" he asked Fab, defaulting to his knowledge of the situation. Any place Surrender picked out to put it would have just been a guess.
His hooves made squishing noises as they sunk into damp ground. Ew. This place was both scary and gross! He could see why his mom and dad never took him out here before. They were both indoors types, and Surrender was figuring out he was one also. This early into the ordeal, he was already second guessing the idea, and was wishing they just picked up a package of chicken from the store for Nega's dinner.
