Hanja pawed through the jewelry he had gathered. Everything seemed to be in order, but one could never be sure. Besides, it couldn’t hurt to double check before the deal tomorrow morning. If the goods weren’t in pristine shape, he wouldn’t get as much for them.
The canine couldn’t stay out for too long, however. As soon as everything was in shape, he was headed back to his hideaway with his trinkets. It would be a shame for them to be stolen away the day before they were sold off again. After all, Hanja had spent a lot of time and effort stealing them!

Lume sighed heavily. He couldn’t believe his mother was so mad with him. All he had done was shoved her into a bit of deep water! How could he have known his mother was so desperately afraid of drowning? He needed to find some way to make it up to her. A gift of some sort, perhaps. All females liked gifts. But what could he get? Flowers just wouldn’t do. He could create a new routine and perform it to her, but that just didn’t seem like enough. He wanted something more special.
A glitter in the sunlight caught his eye. There, across the stream, was a wild dog with what looked like a pile of jewelry. That was perfect! His mother would love a nice necklace to wear as she danced. “Hello there, stranger!” Lume called out, beginning to wade across the water. “Might I be able to lift one those pretty knick-knacks you’ve got there?”

The dog started at the sound of a voice, hackles shooting up along his back. He eyed the approaching feline warily, a snarl on his face. “Watch yourself, stranger. Unless ya got something to pay with, you’d best be keeping your distance.” Hanja warned. He should have known something like this would happen. Why couldn’t he have waited until just before the deal to polish the stupid gems? Now he was going to have to fight off some rash little punk who thought he could just have them for free. Ha! There was no such thing as free. “Now bugger off, you. Or I’ll tear off your ears.” He growled.

-------

Lume scowled. He just wanted to have a necklace. Didn’t this dog understand the concept of generosity? The dog had so many. Certainly he wouldn’t miss just one. He could outrun this greedy little canine. He was close enough to grab one. As long as he got the jump on the dog and took off, there would be no way for him to be caught. Though half of his lineage was leopard, his cheetah blood was strong. He had inherited speed from his mysterious father, and the leopard blood from his mother had granted him a certain amount of endurance. This would be easy. Lume tensed his muscles, then lunged for the jewelry pile, mouth closing on a shimmering necklace.

Silly young kitten. The dog knew something like this had been coming. He had already been prepared for the cat to make a go for the goods. When the stranger lunged, he was ready Hanja let out a fierce snarl, snapping out at the leotah. His teeth tore through the feline's neck, ripping fur out of the scruff. Hanja would do whatever it took to keep even one trinket from being stolen. He took a step forward, shielding the pile with his body.

Lume yowled with pain, reeling back as the skin around his scruff tore. He responded to the dog's snarl with one of his own, red eyes flashing with anger. If that was how the flea-ridden mutt wanted to play, then so be it. The leotah lash out with a paw, claws outstretched. He caught the dog on the muzzle, knocking him a step or two away from the pile. Red streaks appeared on the front of the dog's mouth and nose, droplet of blood running down his face.

Hanja reeled to the side with a yelp, cringing slightly as his nose was slashed open. "Why you little..." He growled through his teeth. Aiming for the nose? A cheap shot indeed. If the furball wanted to fight dirty, then Hanja would teach him a thing or two about fighting dirty. The dog snapped at the leotah's foot, but the cat danced away too quickly. His teeth only barely grazed the paw, and left Hanja in an awkward, vulnerable position.

Lume saw the lunge for his foot coming as plain as he saw the sun. He side-stepped easily, getting away with only the barest grazing of teeth. The dog was left his his back completely open. The male latched on to the back of the canine's neck, fur and blood filling his mouth. A scruff bite for a scruff bite. Though he didn't weigh much, Lume put all of his weight into the bite, forcing Hanja to the ground. He shook his mouth back and forth, tearing further into the skin.

Hanja cried out as he was pinned, squirming underneath the force of the bite. His paws scrambled uselessly at the dirt, trying in vain to gain some sort of purchase. If he didn't find some way to worm out of the hybrid's grip, it wouldn't end too well for him. Hanja bucked upwards, gaining just enough freedom to latch onto one of the feline's back paws for a second. His teeth weren't able to actually break the skin, he was sure it hurt nonetheless.

Hanja: 9
Lume: 13

Lume jerked his foot away, causing the dog's teeth to rip at the pads underneath his foot. The feline tightened his grip on the dog's neck, teeth sinking in and causing deep wounds. He squeezed on what felt like bone, growling deep in his chest. He didn't want to kill the dog; his abuelita would roll in her grave and haunt him for the rest of his days. And from the stories his mama and told him, his abuelita was not someone to be messed with, dead or alive. Summoning his strength, Lume flung the dog into the stream, ripping out chunks of flesh and fur.

Hanja felt himself flying through the air, legs flapping about like wings. The cold water of the stream made him gasp, water rushing into his lungs. The dog resurfaced, coughing and sputtering. His lungs burned, chest heaving as he gulped in precious air. His neck felt like it had been trod on by an elephant. Blood ran down his neck, hot in contrast to the cool water of the stream. Hanja was lucky he had landed in a deeper part of the stream and not on the shallower banks. The thief paddled his way to where he could actually stand, wincing at the pain in his neck. He glanced up at the leotah, anger burning in his eyes. He had tried to fight off the feline, but it seemed as if it were no more use. Hanja couldn't fight anymore even if he tried. He looked away in defeat, glaring at the water swirling with his blood.

Lume let himself relax a fraction as the dog stayed put in the river. He had won. And now he could take it all. He had rightfully won it all as his. The leotah's eyes roamed greedily over the pile. How pleased his mama would be with all of these new trinkets! She would have to forgive him when she saw all that he had brought back. But how would he carry it all?
He spared another glance at the dog and felt the beginnings of guilt take root in his belly. What if this was the dog's livelihood? He couldn't take all of it. One necklace or a bracelet, sure. But what would Mama Rio say if he told her that he had taken all of the dog's goods? With a sigh, Lume picked out only one necklace: a shimmering opal gem set in an elaborate golden collar. Holding it firmly in his mouth, Lume gave the dog a nod before setting out back the way he came, limping slightly from his wounds.
