It was so cold out. So cold. It was almost perfect, it could do with a bit more snow around and more ice and more penguins but she'd get into that later but Sibyl felt now was probably the best day they'd have to go on a swim.

A real swim.

It was why Sibyl had walked the whole three feet it took to get to Marzena's dorm from hers and knocked on the door, carrying a pair of towels and..that was it. She didn't think she'd need anything else.

"Maaaaaaarziiiiiiiieeeeeeee~!" Sibyl called happily, knocking on the door again. "Marzie! Marzie! Maaaaarziiiiie~!"

Marzena knew better than to keep Sibyl waiting.

The younger selkie was relentless, so there was no use in pretending she wasn't in her room. It took a few knocks and the first drawn out call of her name to get up and open the door, greeting the other ghoul. "Hi Sibyl." An eyebrow raised in skepticism as she eyed the towels. "What are you doing here?"

Oh no. Marzena could only hope it wasn't what she guessed it was about.

...It probably was. She was trying desperately to think of an excuse, because shutting the door on Sibyl would. not. work.

Sibyl let out a loud cheer when Marzie opened her door, her eyes wide and practically sparkling as she bounced up and down on her toes, clapping her hands excitedly. The thick material of her mittens muffling the sound. "Hi Marzie! Hi~! Lessogoswimmies! It's nice and cold out and it's so pretty and can we go swimming? Please oh please oh pleeeeeeeeeeeeease?!"

The bad thing about this? She was sorely tempted by the offer. But swimming with Sibyl would mean questions Marzena didn't want to answer. Marzena was caught between a rock and a hard place, and she wasn't sure what to do.

When she had discovered that Sibyl had enrolled at Amityville Academy, she had known that this day would come. Marzena had thought that she could somehow avoid it but now being faced with this situation? It was an entirely different story. "I can't." She said finally. "I wish I could, but I can't." There was no way she could accept and not be bothered about choosing to swim in only her human form. Not when she was swimming with another selkie.

The devastation on Sibyl's face washed over her like a tidal wave, her happiness completely overtaken by the despair of Marzena's answer. Can't? Why not? That made no sense! Didn't Marzie love swimming? She was a selkie! How could she not like swimming?! Swimming was...it was practically a part of them! She stopped bouncing and just stared up at Marzie with the saddest of eyes, her mouth opening and closing like a gaping fish as she tried to come up with something to say.

Marzie wished she could. Okay. So she didn't not love swimming anymore. Sibyl held up her hand as if she had come up with something to say only to lower it again, and then raise it..and lower it..

"But...but why? We never hang out anymore, Marzie." She would not cry. She would. Not. Cry. Sibyl sniffed, her bottom lip quivering as she blinked back tears. "Why can't we go swimming? Is it..homework? I can do that...we can do it together! Is..am I interrupting something?" Why wouldn't Marzie spend time with her? Had she done something wrong? What was it? She could fix it! She could apologize! She could make up for whatever wrong she'd committed! Really!

Jackdammit. Now Sibyl was going to cry.

Marzena felt like banging her forehead against the wall for making the situation worse. It wasn't as if she hated Sibyl; she tolerated her, yes, but they had grown up together and she was used to how annoying the other ghoul could get. Marzena would not admit it out loud, but after a few weeks, she had thought that having another selkie; and it was someone she knew too, in Amityville was a good thing. And she considered it her responsibility, of sorts, to look out for Sibyl because it was partly her fault that Sibyl was here. Plus, their families had been close.

"No... I just... I... UGH." Marzena spluttered and then groaned, slapping her forehead with her hand instead. "Look, I... it's complicated." She stuck her head out of the doorway, making sure no one was in the hallway before she dragged Sibyl into her room and shut the door.

"I can't, because I..." Marzena exhaled sharply. "Look, you're not allowed to tell anyone this. Especially not my family. You have to promise."

She would not cry. She would not cry. Big ghouls didn't cry and you're a big ghoul now, Sibyl! Just because your idol, the ghoul you looked up to most in all of Halloween, didn't want to go swimming with you did not mean it was the end of all things. She just...supposedly couldn't. Sibyl loved Marzena, the ghoul was someone she wanted to be like. Sibyl just wanted Marzie to live her as much as she loved Marzie!

"Complicated?" Sibyl muttered, looking and sounding confused. What was complicated about swimming? She followed Marzena's gaze up and down the hall until the older Selkie pulled her inside, giving a squeak and stumbling into the room. A secret?! Oh, boil! Sibyl loved secrets! "I won't tell! I promise! I promise!" Sibyl even went as far as taking off one of her mittens and offering out her fist with her pinkie extended.

The most sacred promise.

"I promise I won't tell anyone, Marzie!"

Grudgingly, Marzena held out her own hand and wrapped her pinkie around Sibyl's. Just because she was pretty sure that a pinkie promise was like a binding contract to the other selkie and Marzena wanted to take all precautions. "Okay, fine. Good." With that done, it now came the hardest part she had to do; actually explaining why.

She took in a deep breath, mentally arranging words in her head so that it would come out as clear and succinct as possible. "Basically, I exchanged my hair for a location spell for my skin, but the catch was that I can't shapeshift into a seal anymore." It was all said quickly with no pauses, in one breath, so that Sibyl wouldn't be able to interrupt in the middle of her explanation. And with that all out, Marzena cringed, readying herself for the barrage of blabbing and questions that she was sure would spurt out of Sibyl's mouth.

The pinkie promise made, Sibyl was satisfied and dropped her hand to regard Marzie with intense curiosity. What she wasn't expecting was well...any of what Marzie explained. She had said it so quickly and just blurted it out so fast that it actually took Sibyl a long, quiet minute or so to actually process what had been said.

Marzena exchanged her hair for a location spell for her skin. Sibyl had just thought she cut her hair to be different. It was cute, Sibyl liked the haircut though she would never do it for herself. A location spell for her skin. Where had her skin gone? Had someone stolen it?! Had she lost it?! But...but Marzie had her skin!

She couldn't become a seal anymore.

She..

...Marzie..Marzie couldn't become a seal anymore.

When it finally dawned on her the weight of what Marzie was saying the ghoul's eyes widened and her jaw dropped. She looked horrified. "You.." It was shock. Sibyl was speechless. She couldn't think of anything to say. "M..Marzie I..." Her eyes brimmed with tears. Marzie could never become a seal ever again? Never ever? No more swimmies? No more hunting? Basking on the beaches in the warm pumpkin sun glow?

"Why?" She managed to get out, her voice trembling.

Marzena really hated having to deal with crying.

She supposed that it was inevitable. But the last time she cried was when her mother had been captured, and her father was someone who had no idea how to comfort her at all. And so, Marzena could only dredge up memories of how Mira had soothed and dried the tears of her younger siblings; she had watched from a distance before swimming off to demand from her father.

She reached out to take Sibyl's hands, clasping them within hers. Her palms were clammy and trembled slightly, but she tried to keep them as still as possible. Inhale. Exhale. Mira had always been the calm one. She was not as good at this, but when she spoke again to explain, her voice was level and quiet. "I didn't want to come to Amityville and risk having my skin stolen by anyone. So I thought it was a good idea. I didn't know the side effects until I was told, though I guess I should have known better than to trust a sea witch. I tried looking for her," And this was why she had been absent in school lately, "but it's not easy. She seems to have disappeared."

"And now you know," she finished, releasing her grasp on Sibyl. "I don't expect you to forgive me for the foolish thing I did. Just don't tell. I came back because I wanted to get stronger. And I will find her and make her release this curse."

Sibyl was trying really, really hard not to cry. She was a big ghoul, and big ghouls didn't cry. Look at Marzie! She wasn't crying! Sibyl couldn't even recall ever seeing Marzie cry before; if the ghoul had witnessed it then Marzena's overall awesomeness had completely overpowered any memories of it. As Marzena took her hands she sniffled and raised one arm enough to wipe her nose on her sleeve, sniffling again after she listening intently to what Marzie was saying. Oh, so it had been to find her skin if it was taken? Oh, Marzena..

She shook her head as Marzena pleaded with her not to tell anyone what she'd been told. She wouldn't tell anyone. She'd pinkie promised. Instead Sibyl hugged her tightly, burying her face against Marzena with a long, loud whine. "I'msosorryMarzieeeee!" She whimpered, clinging to the ghoul. "WhatifIgiveyoumyskinandthenyoucanswimandandand.." It wouldn't work but it was the thought that counted, Sibyl. You tried.

Marzena couldn't become a seal again. That was just...Sibyl couldn't imagine...how awful it must have been. "Wh-what if I help you?" She sniffed and stood back again, rubbing her eyes with her hands. "I-I'll help you find a way! I p-pr-promise!" Not her Marzie. There had to be a way to fix it. There had to be.

Oh great, a hug.

Marzena stiffened as Sibyl threw her arms around her. All she could do was mimic Mira when Sabina did the same while wailing about Ada having braided rotting seaweed into her hair, and pat Sibyl on the back, albeit awkwardly. (That situation was, however, considerably less serious than this was. Sabina would probably say otherwise.) Though Marzena wasn't even sure why she had thought that Sibyl would hate her or something after knowing. It certainly wasn't the case. She had even offered her skin. "Uh... it's okay. We both know that won't work..."

... Sibyl's suggestion was something she had considered, after her futile attempts to search for the witch. Not just the hyperactive selkie, but getting help in general was a good idea. Still, Marzena had always been wary and didn't know anyone in Amityville well enough that she trusted with her secret and that would willingly help her. Sibyl was one, of course, but she was awfully overeager.

But it was a start. "It's not a bad idea. I'm probably going to need more help than just me if I want to get uncursed."

Sibyl thought nothing strange of her eagerness to help Marzena. Why wouldn't she want to help Marzie? Why wouldn't she want to help any Selkie who was having this kind of trouble? To not be able to become a seal ever just sounded like a horrible fate second only to having their skin stolen. She nodded, eyes wide and still just barely brimming with unshed tears. "Y-yeah! I can..I can do things too!" Like...

Like...!

....Uh..

"I can finally swim better than you." The realization dawned on her like the pumpkin sun on a new day, her delight somewhat bittersweet but at least it could lighten the mood, right?

...

....

.... .... Marzena could only eye Sibyl in silence, not quite sure how she was to react to this. It was so silly that part of her wanted to laugh, but she crossed her arms in defiance. She was not going to laugh. No. Nopeeeeeeee.

Besides, "Only if you count seal form." Marzena retorted. "I'm pretty good at swimming in human form too." Was that a smirk on the corner of her lips? Maybe.

Oh ho! What was this?! A challenge! This was more like it. Sibyl pouted and put her fists on her hips. "I bet I swim a million times better than you in human form!" Except for the fact that she'd done this maybe all of two times ever. Sibyl preferred to swim as a seal.
