It felt like it had been forever since he had last seen his brother and spent any time having fun with him. Same with his parents. Truth being, it had only been a couple of weeks since Pach had taken off somewhere with Tin and their parents had decided it was time for their other to go out and see the world.
He sighed and looked pathetically down into the water of the lake in front of him. The colors of the sunset glittered over the surface.
"At least it's pretty here..." Beat mumbled. Lowering his head to drink, the little stallion flicked his ears back to listen to the ringing of the bell around his tail. It was calming in a way, reminding him of being a foal at his mother's side and listening to the gentle chiming of her own bells. A smile crossed his face, wings starting up a rhythmic buzz in tune to the crickets and single bell ring.
Beat didn't stop to think of what attention he might be attracting to himself as he began to slowly dance to the musical sounds. At least it was something to keep his mind off his brother and home for the time being.

Alyssia was always wondering around keeping her eyes open for a good location for a herd to settle down. She took her parent's dream quite seriously, and hoped to bring together a whole group of other's that shared their dream. First things first though, they would have to find some place to settle down. There was the option of being a nomadic herd, but that seemed more a hassle than anything else. As all these thoughts rolled around in her head she almost missed the soft jingling of bells. As it was, being lost in thought caused her to trip over a root poking out of the ground.
Her mind no longer distracted she actually registered the sound of bells in her mind. She could easily say she enjoyed the sound, it almost seemed to form a beat with the other natural noises around her. She began to wander toward the sound, and wasn't surprised when she found they belonged to a stallion by a nearby lake. The sound of the bells became background noise as she stared at him, her attention fixated on the wings on his back. They almost seemed to sparkle in the light from the setting sun.
She had never met anyone whom she had been so instantly attracted to. Just staring at him was causing her to blush and she could already feel her thoughts beginning to fluster. Jeez, talk about a completely alien experience for her. She wasn't exactly hidden from sight and she took a step forward wondering if she could bring herself to talk to the stunning stallion or not. It was almost like a challenge now. What was the worst that could happen? He didn't look like he could harm a fly! Oh no, he was far too adorable for that.

The stallion pranced happily in a circle as he continued his own little personal dance. He let the natural music overtake his thoughts for the time being. It was making his happy, after all. Something he hadn't really been for the last several days. Beat was so lost in the sounds and moving his feet the right way to follow the dance, he completely missed the larger mare that came over the horizon near him.
After what seemed like an eternity of bliss in his mind, Beat finally stopped and bowed to the water. He straightened back out and flicked his tail again, debating whether or not to stay by the lake for the night or go back into the forest. He felt safer there after all, with more places to hide if the need came.

Alyssia watched as the Stallion really started to move and before long she could definitely tell it was a lovely dance. She was almost jealous of his ability to move around, which was absurd. She liked to fight and play in the dirt. No one had ever really made her wish she had been more....What was the word she was looking for? Dainty? Not that she would call the stallion dainty....
Seeing him dance finally broke her out of her silence. At least she had something to talk to him about now. When he finally stopped she found herself moving toward him once again. "Where did you learn to dance like that?" She wondered if she knew anyone that might be able to teach her such skills, but no one came to mind.

Beat jumped as he turned and found her in his face. His little wings buzzed in response while he searched for an answer to give her. "Dance? Oh! Uhh...my mom and dad. Mostly mom though...she dances really amazingly!" He stated, quite proud of his heritage it seemed. After a moment his pride shifted to interest, as he circled her curiously.
"What are you? Where did you come from? I didn't see you around the lake before when I got distracted. So you must have come from the water! That's the only explanation. You were swimming deep in the water!" Beat beamed at his conclusion, having never been familiarized with the scales along her body. She reminded him of a fish in that respect. Therefore, she must swim and breathe water. It really only made sense.

Alyssia stood still as the stallion looked her over, always willing to help settle someone's curiosity. Not to mention she was a little different from the rest of her family in the fact that she had scales, a gift from one of her mother's mothers back in time. She was proud of them and it gave her an ability that not everyone else had. She could walk on water!
"No I didn't come from the water, I'm not a fish I'm part Kirin! That's where my scales come from. I was simply wandering around, like I always do, when I was attracted to the sound. Your parents did a beautiful job at teaching you. I'm so big I'd just trip over myself if I tried...." It dawned on her than that she really didn't do any sort of girly things. No she got into fight, rolled around in the dirt, and was always up for a challenge. No girly stuff for this mare, however she had to admit she envied his dancing enough that it almost bothered her that she didn't even know the slightly bit about moving her hooves to a beat.

Beat blinked and tilted his head in confusion as he listened to her. Kirin? What did she mean by Kirin?
"What's...a Kirin? I've never seen one like you before ever, anywhere! Not even back home in the grove." He said, prancing around her a few times to get a good look at her scales. He paused and smiles to himself, caught up in the glint of light shining off of them as the sun was setting. "But your scales are shiny, like a fish...I guess if you walk on water though, that's still good!" He beamed, after getting over his momentary, shiny distraction.
Beat gasped after a moment and quickly moved back in front of her, buzzing his wings in excitement. "I'm sorry! I forgot to introduce myself like mom always said I should to be nice! I'm Beat." He finished, giving her a bright grin.

There was something about this guy, this flutter, that she found deeply amusing. Normally when she ran into other males she instantly challenged the, want to get better at defending her future herd for her mother and father. Being the biggest of her siblings and the oldest, she just felt the need to be able to defend them. However, this male didn't bring out and of her usual qualities. In fact he made her feel giddy! Of all things!
"Kirin have tails and scales like mine, plus a full kirin would also have a horn on top of their head. They're not typically dangerous and we love to walk on water." That was really all she could think to say. He might be a bit startled the next time he ran into one and it wasn't nearly as big as she is, of course maybe meeting one smaller than himself might help.
"Oh! I'm Alyssia, and it's nice to meet you Beat!" She couldn't believe that she had forgotten her own manners and completely forgot mentioning her name before now. Her mother would have scolded her as soon as she started talking without an introduction. Oh well, her mother wasn't here was she? She had a feeling this male was making her forget all of her manners.

"Alyssia...that's a pretty name." He murmured, mulling the name over in his head a bit. "My whole family is...musical I think. At least I'm pretty sure anyway." He quickly started prancing around her again, buzzing his wings happily. "Anyway, I like you! You're nice to me! A lot of others have just ignored me or chased me off since I had to leave the grove to see the world...."
Beat frowned a bit at the thought of others not wanting him around. There had been a select few that had stayed and talked to him, but they were nothing like this mare was.
"Oh! What about your family? We live in a forest a long ways away from here...it seems so anyway. I've been traveling for days now so I imagine I'm really far away from home now."

Alyssia actually found herself giggling as the stallion danced around her, maybe it was something to do with his size that set her off? She knew flutters were generally smaller than regular breeds of Soquili, but even still she was bigger than most anyway, so it made the difference more noticeable. "You had to leave your grove? A grove sounds like a nice place to be!" She wasn't sure whether he was sad about having to leave, or if he really didn't have an opinion on the matter. He seemed to be holding up well, assuming this was really his first time traveling.
"I wander on and off, my family is mostly nomadic for now. We're looking for a good place to settle down and start a herd. I think we're getting close to finding a permanent home, despite that I still like to wander, it's just so interesting out in the world. And besides, I have a brother to take over the herd anyway, so I'm just a protector." She stomped her hoof a bit, trying to look tough, but failing a bit in her current giddy state. This stallion just had acting so off her game.

Beat nodded and bounced back and forth on his feet for a moment as he searched his mind for the right words. "My brother...found a mare he likes. Then something happened...and he went with her to her home...and our parents told me to leave and go explore and not come home for a while. Then they went to stay with dad's family farther north in the forest." He told her, still not quite sure of all the details regarding why he had to leave home so suddenly.
"But I guess that means our grove is empty right now. Except for the little forest animals. I wonder why we all had to leave...." He hemmed and haw'ed on it some more, eventually turning his attention back to Alyssia.
"So you're used to traveling? How can you all keep going so long? Just coming this far as been really tiring. It's really hot outside the protection of the tall trees, you know?" He asked.

"Your parents were probably just trying to get you out on your own hooves for a while! It will be a good experience, I'm sure of it!" Alyssia didn't really know what it was like to be kicked out of her home though. She had always been with her parents and when she had gotten older she had learned to wander off safely on her own and didn't need any pushing from her parents to make her do it.
She nodded at his next question. "Yes, although I do believe we will have a place to settle down soon. It's wise to stay close to the water as you travel and yes, shade does help. I guess, you just get used to traveling once you've done it long enough. You build up stamina after a while." She could honestly keep going for days and days on end so long as she stuck to water and had plenty of food to naw on on her way.

"Yeah I suppose..." Beat quickly shrugged and smiled, dancing around the larger mare. "You must travel everywhere then! Especially if you can go all day without getting tired." He chimed. "I guess if I stay away long enough and visit enough places...then I'll be able to walk all day too."
He shook his head happily, knocking the scarf around his head down a bit. "I at least have this to help keep the sun out of my eyes. Plus I think this lake might connect to the river back home...and if it doesn't...it has to have some connection somewhere." He mumbled, turning his attention once more to the water.
Beat stayed silent for a while after that as he mulled the events of the last several days around in his head. Eventually the sound of the mare's hooves beside him drew the little stallion back out of his thoughts. "Oh, sorry. Just thinking...are you headed anywhere special tonight? Or are you going to rest?"

Alyssia looked up toward the sky at his question, she hadn't realized it was actually starting to turn into a darker evening. Normally she would be on top of something like that, but the lovely, fluttering stallion was distracting her efficiently. "I suppose it could be a good time to stop and rest, it can be dangerous to travel at night in an area you don't know all that well." She caught the way the water had distracted him for a second, he must have really missed home.
"HEY!" She suddenly shouted, excited about something cool she could show him with the water. "Did you know, there are some Soquili who can walk on water? She gave him a smirk and then trotted over to the water's edge. Being only half-kirin made her less stable than she could have been, but with a lot of concentration she could make this work. She took a deep breath and put her right front hoof out onto the water. Once it almost felt solid underneath her she continued forward under all four of her hooves were standing on top of the water.
It wasn't exactly perfect, the water muddled up around her hooves, instead of staying perfect flat and restless. So far, this was the best she'd been able to manage, but she was practicing almost daily.

"Yeah...some sleep might be good...." He mumbled as he watched the water. Her sudden outburst, however, cause him to jump and fly into a brief panic.
"Wha-what?! What's wrong?! Is there someone else--oh. You did say some could walk on water!" Beat beamed, wings buzzing happily when he realized there was actually no danger around. He stepped aside as she moved closer and watched curiously.
"That's really neat....when did you learn to do that...?" He asked, tilting his head and stepping out into the water in an attempt to try for himself. "Do you think I could learn? Or...do I have to have magic fish scales like you?"
