The wounds on Lestari’s back had healed back quite nicely, the pain now only a flicker of a memory behind the dark brewing anger she felt towards her mother. This tournament she had heard about, it was just the right thing to hopefully clear her mind from the thundering cloud of hate. Poor fellow who would be on the receiving end of her bad mood today, things would not be as smooth as she would like. Needless to say, apart from the whole revenge thing, this was going to be her first tournament Lestari was participating. A chance to prove herself and maybe she could truly become a fighter after this!

The opponent before her was actually a girl, tiny for her age which Lestari guessed was close to hers, but she could also see the hint of muscle under her clothing. She wasn’t even doing any warm ups, just staring Lestari down like she too was fighting her own demon. Hand on her hip, the pale Lunarian finally turned towards her opponent just as the referee hit the dong. Her hand dropped quickly enough as her fingers snacked into her bandaged forearms to grab one of her needles and then Lestari started jogging towards the other girl, eyes fixed on the little Lunarian.

You can do this, Luli. You can!

Luli stared at her opponent, gazed fixed unerringly. She gripped her quarterstaff in both hands, knuckles turning white. It would be okay, she had trained for this, she had! She could show them she was fighter material. For the nobles, for her lineage, for the grace of her mother and to honour the death of her father.

Except Luli had placed so much meaning on this one battle that she'd done herself a disservice: she spent so much energy trying to talk herself into the fight that her reflexes had been dulled, and she hadn't even remebered to stretch.

Stupid, stupid! You're so stupid, Luli! she chastised herself, eyes brimming with tears.

"Shut... up!" she screeched, spinning her quarterstaff in one hand and beginning a slow sprint to meet her opponent. Too many openings! She was hardly prepared.

For a brief moment, Lestari thought about holding back. Giving the girl a short beating and making sure she didn’t get her too badly and was able to walk after their fight, her she lost all resolve when the girl started sprinting towards her. It was like she was reliving her fight with her mother, as if she could still smell the spices in the kitchen that day. As the two opponents reached each other, Lestari got down low, using her forearm to block the quarter staff wincing in the process from receiving the blow. Her other arm came around to swing; Lestari was aiming for the girls stomach.

This was how she should have taken her mother out, she shouldn’t have held back thinking her mother would do the same. No instead, her mother had gone for knives to stab her own daughter with. Lestari wondered if anyone in the family even knew what had happened, surely she had left some damage on her mother too?

Unbeknownst to her opponent, Luli was also thinking of her mother. They hadn't quite been reduced to killing each other, however; Luli had merely survived a childhood of verbal abuse. Abuse which continued to this day. Left without a family or support, Luli's mother had always blamed her daughter for ruining her life, being a burden, chasing their family away. Luli was not even her biological child, though the woman would never admit as much.

Somewhere, Luli may have had a real, loving family. If she hadn't been stolen, locked away and kept like a bird in a cage. And now it seemed to be too late; the girl's self-confidence was shattered. She didn't really even seem to be paying attention to her fellow combattant. "You're so useless! Stupid, useless, weak!" she yelled, louder than even before, her eyes shut and tears streaming down her face as she took the better part of a blow to the stomach. She'd managed to deflect some of it with her recovered staff, but even that had knocked it out of her hands. She scrambled to pick it up again, and, knees shaking, held it out in front of her once she got to her feet, as if praying her opponent wouldn't come near her again.

When her opponent yelled out Lestari had been momentarily confused, was this girl speaking to her or was she speaking to herself? It wasn’t exactly in her best interest to be saying such things to the blue haired Lunarian, not while thoughts of her mother were on her mind. Needless to say, if she had been talking to herself it made Les wonder why the girl was in this tournament to begin with. Poor little thing stood in front of her now, shaking with her staff in hand. She’d practically fumbled with it when Lestari had knocked it out of her hands, by accident which had surprised even Les at the strength she’d used to block.

She shouldn’t be here. Lestari thought quietly, she needed to be home and not here in this ring of death. No time to tell her, the blue haired Lunarian was already getting back up and moving towards the little girl with speed this time aiming for a kick at the mid drift. If she could get the little girl down on her stomach, she’d be able to stick her with a few needles and hopefully impair the girl enough so that she wouldn’t be getting up, but would walk away later with no injuries. Of course, it was easier said than done, you couldn’t just stick someone with a bunch of needles in one shot.

It looked like her opponent wouldn't have to worry about the details of using needles to incapacitate her in a non-deadly fashion. Luli, shaking worse than a leaf in a storm, teetered and then collapsed. She appeared to have fainted from the sheer stress of failure, and the anticipation of pain.

Luli couldn't handle it. She couldn't handle the notion of returning home, especially not after having failed. On the bright side, her opponent wouldn't have to deal with the girl's poor self-esteem: it was no longer her problem.

The kick Lestari had started only hit air as her leg flew over the girl’s body where her midriff was positioned just before. The motion made her spin around once and when she turned Les looked down at the girl and sighed loudly. This little girl shouldn’t have been in this fight, she should have been home coddled by family member. Les got down on her knees beside the girl, tucked a hand under the girls shoulder and gently tried to move her to see if she was still alive. Thankfully she was, Lestari hadn’t killed the poor girl with her first attack.

However, the girl wasn’t fighting and didn’t look like she was going to be getting back up any time soon. Lestari bent down towards the girl’s ear and whispered, “You shouldn’t be here.” It wasn’t to drag the girl’s self-esteem through more hardship, but she wanted the girl to know that she was not ready for this yet. Pushing herself back up, Lestari walked away from the girl. This wasn’t a real win, just like this hadn’t been a real fight to begin with.
