Hovering above the rooftops, a Shiny Shuppet gazed at the moon, watching her breath float away from her as she enjoyed the still and quiet. Although it wasn't too terribly late, it had just finished snowing, so even the other creatures of the night were snuggled up inside their holes and homes, leaving the Pokemon alone and undisturbed. Which made her completely happy. No one being scared of her, no one trying to attack her, no one trying to catch her; it was just the moon, the shadows, and the Shuppet, and it was beautiful.
The Shuppet stayed out there - literally, she watched the moon move across the sky - and was probably by herself for a several solid hours before something tickled at the back of her head. She tried ignoring it, not wanting to leave her perfect spot until it was absolutely necessary, but after just a few moments, the tickling turned into an itch. Blinking, the Pokemon pulled herself away from the view of the moon, floating down the rooftop without so much as a sound.
She knew these streets, but even though she'd grown up in this city, the Shiny Shuppet followed the pull as if she were lost and unsure of where she was going. Every turn was taken with a pause and a peek, going cautiously down alleyways and across backyards. Finally, on a street lined with apartment complexes, she felt the pull ease and become not so...insistent. Still, it was like she needed to find the source.
She'd come this far, after all.
Floating upwards, the Shuppet soon found the apartment that hid the source of her curiosity. Now, mind you, going inside any place where people could see her was something she would never do. The Shuppet was wary of others, and preferred being by herself. This should give you an idea, however, about how compelling this feeling was...because she phased herself right through the walls into the apartment, though by no means was she any bolder or less afraid. True to character, actually, she was twice as jumpy as before - mentally telling herself she should not be in here, and this was entirely insane.
Silent as...well, a ghost, she floated down a hallway, carefully peeking into doorways that were left open. The doors that were shut, she simply phased into, though very slowly and only as much of her head as she needed to actually see what was behind the door. One room was an office, another a bathroom...nothing interesting, but she was heading in the right direction, she could sense it. Pausing in the hall, she took a moment to focus, and felt her senses zero in on the next open door.
Taking care to peer around the door frame carefully, the Shuppet was curious to see a child's bedroom. This one obviously belonged to a boy - the walls were a bright, crayon blue with base balls and other sports items all over the place. What caught her breath however, was that the boy was awake - his back to the door, sitting on the edge of his bed - and he was muttering to himself.
"Stupid Amber...stupid baby," he hissed, though there was a sniffle in there that told the Shuppet he'd also been crying. "They just wanna replace me...with a girl."
It was here that the Shuppet realized what had driven her, pulling her to this place. The boy was jealous of someone - intensely jealous. It'd been a long time since the Shuppet had seen someone carrying the emotion this strongly, and all the little pieces of her pull towards it fell into place and fit together. Since the beginning, she'd been drinking it in, and now being in the direct presence of the source made her body begin to glow faintly. Taking in a slow breath, the feeling of jealousy was exhilarating. Most people carried small amounts of envy with them all the time, and you could have surges when the anger behind it was triggered. This, however, was pure...true jealousy in it's most raw form, uninhibited by rationalizations and guilt.
No wonder she'd felt it from so far away.
"Shaw," the Shuppet said, overwhelmed by the energy she was drinking in and completely forgetting herself.
That was all it took; the boy froze, and his jealously was cut sharply by sudden terror. Like a jolt, the Shuppet came back to herself, but it was too late. The boy had turned, and saw her floating there...rather hauntingly. His eyes widened, his mouth beginning to tremble as for a moment his brain wasn't sure what to do. Then it decided to respond as was proper for a young child his age...and that was when the boy screamed.
The poor Shuppet wasn't known for her best escape plans. She tended to forget that she could phase through walls and make herself nearly invisible to the human eye. So instead of flying right through the walls or out the window, she turned and fled further down the hallway. Behind her, the child was still screaming, shrill and choking on breath as he also began to cry from fright.
Heavy footsteps came from another part of the apartment, and the Shuppet floated in one space, frantically trying to think her way out of this mess. She never should have come in here, she should have just stayed on the roof and remained safe! Spinning in a circle, she noted another open door and made a dash for it, turning sharply to hide behind the wall and hoping they'd just check on the boy and assume he'd had a nightmare.
"Mama?" Oh Arceus, what had she gotten herself into now?
Daring to look around, the Shuppet first saw the crib, and then the small, blonde child that stood against the bars, rubbing her eyes and looking disheveled. She sniffled a bit, blinking tiredly, before in a moment she was wide awake and staring at the Shuppet with interest. Frozen, the Pokemon once again simply hung in the air, drifting without a breeze. The child smiled at her then, little hands grabbing at the air.
"Hi...hi teru," she cooed, continuing to make those grabby hands in the Shuppet's direction. So this is what that little boy was so jealous of...a new addition to the family, a baby sister. Someone who was very cute, and unafraid, making it easy for people to fall in love with her innocence.
It was when the footsteps sounded again that the Shuppet's eyes snapped around and the panic set back in. She looked at the child, still so happy to see her...and realized that the child could see her, and that was something that the Shuppet could fix. As a shadow appeared in the doorway, in that same breath the Shuppet was transparent and hiding among the baby's toys.
A woman entered the room, looking tired and irritated...especially when she realized that the little girl was awake.
"Of course he woke you up," the woman muttered, going over to pick up the child who was now giggling and reaching for her mother. Once settled on a hip, clutching with one hand to the mother's shirt, she pointed with another hand right to where the Shuppet was hidden.
"Teru. Teru teru teru," she laughed, bouncing a little and making the grabbing motion with her hand.
"Yes, teru teru bozu," the mother mumbled, sighing as she turned to leave the room. "We'll make some tomorrow, if you ever let me get back to sleep." As the footsteps and voices faded down the hall, the Shuppet's heart stopped racing and she was finally able to rationalize getting out of the house - leaving the same way she had originally entered and phasing right through the walls.
Scolding herself for nearly getting caught, the Pokemon paused briefly to regard what the baby had said. Teru? What did that mean? Her mind jumbled with all sorts of things, the Shuppet decided she was going to try and find a much quieter neighborhood. Hopefully far away from this family, with their jealous son and daughter who obviously wanted to grab hold of the ghost Pokemon. She'd figure out the meanings of those words once she'd gotten herself settled into a less terrifying place.
