It had been a grueling process to gets his father to allow him to hang out at a friend's house, if only because his father couldn't possibly figure how Orin wanted to go see someone he'd only met once. For all he knew, this little girl Orin had met was some abnormally small adult waiting to prey on his young, sweet son. After a light hearted argument, and a lengthy conversation with Millicent's mother, Dresden had finally agreed to let his son play at his new friend's house.

Orin couldn't be more thrilled with the concept; he was eager to tell Millie all about the cat—how cute and charming Mr. MooMoo was, and how, even though he'd thrown up on Dresden's nice shoes, he was the perfect pet. He had reassured his father that they were at the right address, and when Dresden wanted to walk him to the door and meet Bellatrix face to face, Orin had persuaded him not to. He loved his father, but sometimes he was just a bit embarrassing. He'd planted a quick kiss on his father's cheek, told him he loved him, and that he'd have a lot of fun and would see the male in a few hours before he bolted out of the car and to the door. He was wearing a broad grin as he reached for the doorbell, and though it was in his blood to press the button as many times as he could before someone answered, he pressed only once before clasping his hands behind his back and rocking on his heels while he waited for someone to let him in.

Bellatrix opened the door a few moments later, giving a smile. “Why hello there, you must be Orin! Millie is upstairs still getting ready, I’m afraid she overslept and forgot to clean her room before you got here.” She gave a little smile and held the door open for the boy.

“She’s been talking about you almost nonstop though, so it’s very nice to finally meet you in person. Do you want to come to the kitchen with me to get a snack while we wait for her to finish? I just pulled some muffins out of the oven if you would like one. They’re still fresh and warm!”

She really would be the first to admit that she was very happy that Millie was having a friend over. It had been almost too long. When had the girl had someone her age over at the house? For that matter, when had the last time Jett been around…well, maybe that was a good thing in and of itself. It wasn’t that she disliked Jett, it was just that he was a little…or very much too old to be hanging around with and almost twelve year old girl.

"Wow," Orin gasped, staring up at the woman's hair. First appearances were important to Orin, and Bellatrix had obviously impressed him. "You're pretty! I like your hair, that's my favorite color! Like my dad's, only he doesn't like it like that, so he dyes it." He stared for a moment more, smile still on his face, and then remembered his manners.

"Oh—I am Orin, nice to meet you, ma'am!" he added, eagerly stepping inside. He meant to be mindful and set about toeing off his shoes so as not to make a mess in the house. He knew ladies could be weird about that sort of thing, and he wanted to make a good impression—especially when muffins were involved. "I'd love a muffin if you're offering. They smell delicious! Not like dad's at all. I bet he'd love to meet you, and not just because he's kinda overprotective of me. But he could probably use some more friends—and he might even keep his hair normal if he saw you! I would, for sure. He thinks he's like," Orin scoffed, "the only person younger than eighty who white hair."

Talking to strangers obviously wasn't an issue for Orin, and his father obviously had a very real reason to worry about it.

Bellatrix blinked, then laughed. Oh this boy was quite adorable, that was for sure. “Your father has white hair too? I used to think it was a terrible burden, but I’ve gotten used to it now, and I quite like it. It suits me, I think. I’m sure your father will think the same thing, one day, at the very least.”

She smiled at him, turning and beckoning for him to follow her to the kitchen. “I don’t mind meeting him at all. He sounds like a nice guy, I’m sure. And of course, he’s raised you so he couldn’t be all bad at all.” The woman offered him a muffin and sighed. “Millicent should be done cleaning soon….at least I hope so.” There was some sounds of stomping above them, clearly the girl was not happy about this cruel and unusual punishment. Bellatrix just shook her head.

“Your father seems like he worries about you a lot, doesn’t he? That’s really sweet. I bet your mother is proud of you as well, isn’t she? You seem like you’re a very good child. Do you do well in school too?”

Eagerly, Orin took a muffin from Bellatrix's hand, offering a quick word of thanks. It took him an extra moment to reply, given that his mouth was full of the dessert almost as soon as she had presented it to him. He seemed in heaven, holding the muffin like it was some prized possession. Food hardly down his throat, he eagerly responded, "I do! Well. Sometimes. I'm not the smartest kid in the class, but I always finish my homework, and I always give it my all!"

When he could afford to concentrate for long enough, at least. "My dad says that's all that matters. He's just proud that I'm in school. I study on my own a lot because I know sometimes he seems frustrated when he can't help me with a problem. I don't like to make him feel bad or anything. He just wants me to do better in school than he did. Do you help Millicent? She seems smart, so I was hoping that if we used the excuse 'studying', we might be able to hang out more often. I mean—if you don't mind. Sometimes I need someone to help me stay on topic or I get distracted and don't want to do my work," he said, and despite his honesty and willingness to talk about it, he didn't seem too proud of the fact.

Bellatrix watched the boy, seeming both amused and thoughtful. “Well, I do help Millie with anything I can, and of course. If you use the excuse of studying I’m sure you’ll be able to hang out far more often than when you don’t use that excuse.” She shook her head, turning around and busying herself by cleaning a dish in the sink.

After a moment the woman sighed. “Your father’s right though. Doing your best with something is the very best thing you can do. You can’t expect to be perfect with everything in life, or you’ll just end up being disappointed in whatever you finally accomplish. And that only leads to bad moods and frowns. Your father seems like he’s a very good guy, and you’re quite lucky to have him, Orin. Quite lucky indeed.”

She turned back to him and smiled. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’m going to go see just what’s taking my daughter so long. I’m sorry if I’ve bored you, but it has been nice getting to know you like this. I hope you’ll come visit often, Orin.”

"Oh, you didn't bore me!" Orin insisted, grin firmly planted on his face. "I hope we can hang out more! I'd love to come and visit. And not just for the muffins!"

Even though he definitely would not have minded stuffing a few into his pockets to save for later.

He waved exuberantly, not because he was happy to see her go but because he wanted her to see how delighted he'd been to have a conversation with her. Orin wasn't too fond of serious conversations, so it seemed to have ended on a good point. Plus, she liked his father! Or, at least, she seemed too—she said he was a good guy!

He'd have to get the two to meet one of these days; his father would just love Bellatrix.

Especially for those muffins.
