There were few places Jett would have liked to be on New Year's Eve, and even his bed didn't sound as appealing as sitting next to Raven on the couch. There was a bottle of wine sitting on the table in front of them, if only because they'd gotten a little impatient waiting for midnight.

As was customary for their more important dates, they'd had a fancy homemade dinner, so it wasn't like they hadn't already dipped into the alcohol. Jett had one arm wrapped around Raven's shoulders, curling some of her hair around his finger as he held her close to him. The television was on, tough the volume had been turned down during a commercial and neither had bothered to turn it back up again.

Though there was still about half an hour before midnight, though the people in Raven's neighborhood seemed particularly keen on reigning in the new year a little early; the sound of poppers and fireworks certainly put a damper on the peaceful, romantic aspect he'd been hoping to capture. Of course, with an overzealous, easily excited, clingy dog like Raven's, going over to her place for romance was always a bit difficult. The dog was lying on the floor, curled up on his feet, and while Jett might huff and gripe about it, he had a soft spot for the dog. Sure, she could get in the way and had a habit of getting underfoot, though Jett liked the attention. When he wasn't trying to get Raven's attention.

He seemed thoughtful, in his own little world, remote resting on his knee as he continued to toy with Raven's hair, just enjoying their peaceful evening together. With her parents out, and his mother in California, it was obvious that they were destined to spend the evening together.

Raven couldn’t deny how nice it felt to be hanging out with her boyfriend and ringing in the new year with him by her side. Sure it was terribly cheesy, and who knew. Maybe it was just the wine going to her head a bit…(She had been out drinking him after all.)

With a content sigh, she let her head lull onto Jett’s shoulder. “I don’t know. Sometimes I think the hype of New Years Eve is kind of stupid to be honest. What’s the point of partying. People make such a big deal out of everything…and they make such a big deal out of changing their lives in the next year, but nothing ever really happens, you know? People make so many resolutions…but so few people really keep up with them. It’s kind of dumb to be honest.”

She removed her head from his shoulder and looked at him, giving a little smile. “What would you do, or change or whatever, if you could. What is the biggest thing you want to be different this year?”

Now, even though she thought resolutions were a little dumb, that didn’t mean she didn’t have some she’d like to carry out. Most of them involved him, to be perfectly honest. “I don’t know, Jett. I think I’d like us to get a place together, sometime this year. If you’d want to.”

While Jett had been fine to listen to Raven discuss her perspective on the festivities related to the new year—he cared very little for them, himself—when she mentioned getting a place together, his mind stopped. She'd had a decent amount to drink, and he wasn't sure if the alcohol was liquid courage or making her say things she didn't mean, but he knew that this was a topic he'd have to tread lightly on.

Particularly because she'd sprung it out of nowhere, and he hadn't really considered living together. The thought had been there, but never seriously. He was attached to his mother—he didn't want to leave her alone, in an empty house. But he couldn't live with her for the rest of his life, either.

He mulled over the idea, and reached for his half emptied glass of wine, taking a swig as he mulled it over. It would have been easier to answer her question about things he'd like to change if she hadn't dropped a bigger bomb on him.

What would he change? He wanted more power, but that wasn't anything new in his life. A better job, a better reputation. A better place in life. A better life for his mother? New Years meant nothing for him; rarely did he reflect on what had happened instead of focus on what was going to happen, and his plans weren't so easily forged between one year and another. Everything he had going now, he'd been working towards, and would continue to work towards. Tonight was just the same as yesterday night, or tomorrow night—with the added bonus of his beautiful, slightly tipsy girlfriend.

Upon lowering the glass from his lips, he asked, "Move in together?" He didn't need her to repeat the question, just wanted to buy himself a few extra seconds to come up with a response. "As in, you want to go out—apartment shopping? That's a lot of work." He clucked his tongue thoughtfully. "A lot of obligations. Not impossible, mind you. How long have you had that thought on your mind, hmm?" He stroked her cheek with his thumb, mind still racing for some sort of appropriate response. He might have looked fairly calm externally, though internally he was racking up a list of pros and cons.

His eyes slid to the bottle on the table, wondering if now was time to give her a refill, before returning his gaze to her, offering his sweetest smile.

Raven was just slightly tipsy, but she was trying hard to hide the fact. It wasn’t that the alcohol had given her any boost of confidence, it really had just been one of those questions that had been floating around her mind for a while…a rather long while, to be honest.

“Well…Yeah. Apartment shopping. I think it would be good for us…I mean, we’ve been together for a while, and we’ve proved we’re pretty good at handling fights—at least you’re good at buying jewelry to placate me when you screw up.” She took another sip of her wine before continuing. “How long have I been thinking about this? Months, honestly. Ever since you had that other girl come stay with you. I think it was then that I was just about ready to grab you by the hair and force you to get an apartment with me. At least then you can’t just shack up with someone else without me knowing about it.”

She returned the smile, then sighed. “I really want this. And I think we could get a really nice place together. My parents still drive me nuts, and it’s time for me to get a job and move out. And If I move out…I really want it to be with you.”

Jett was particularly defensive when it came to someone accusing him of screwing up, so while he stayed silent, that didn't stop him from shooting Raven a particularly sour look. He was thankful that all it took was some shiny to make things all right with her, but that didn't mean he was thrilled to do it.

"I told you," he said, sounding a bit exasperated. "It was a spur of the moment decision, and I've apologized countless times for inviting her to stay with me. I should have called Quinn or something, I get it." But tonight wasn't about arguing, and he really didn't want it to turn into that. Raven had a point—they'd been dating for over a year now, and even while juggling school, their personal life, and being nighttime heroes, they were still together. And was there really any harm in moving out? It would give him space—freedom. He wouldn't have to explain to his mother how he got in the house without her hearing. She wouldn't see all the bruises, or question his affinity with mirrors.

And he'd get a hell of a lot more private time with Raven—that was something he could definitely go for.

"But moving out…" he faltered, in that instant. He couldn’t leave his mother alone any more than he could live with her for the rest of his life. "…Has pros and cons." There were the typical things—paying bills, keeping it clean, learning to live with each other, quirks and all. But none of that was stopping him. That, he could handle. And if Raven didn't know that that wasn't the reason he wasn't jumping to say yes, then she'd missed the most obvious fact of his private life.

He was just afraid to leave his mother all alone.

The blonde girl waved her hand, giving a little laugh. “Don’t worry. I was just using it as an excuse. I’m not still mad about it. Not really, at least…anyway…” She snuggled close, closing her eyes as she simply rested against him. “Of course it has pros and cons. I mean…what if we end up hating one another before we really get used to living together, or what if…by trying to cook dinner for us…I burn the place down.”

She sighed and just gave a shrug. “I mean I’ll have to learn to cook if I’m going to impress your mom when she comes to visit. She’ll have to come by at least once a week. I don’t want her to feel all alone at your place, after all.”

Because Jett was without a doubt the biggest mamma’s boy on the face of the earth. There was no way he would ever consent to live with her if she didn’t at least mention his mother once. “Besides, it’s not like we’re moving to another country…just somewhere in the city, closer to the heart of things. It’ll be fun.”

That Raven had reassured him that she wasn't mad and scooted closer, Jett found himself relaxing, and able to think a bit more clearly. "It could be fun," he confessed, eyes half lidded as he mulled over the prospect, still. "I'm sure you wouldn't burn the house down. Your cooking isn't that bad."

He kissed her temple for good measure, and then just sighed. "I’d like to live with you, I think. I'd like it a lot. But I can't right now. I can't risk something happening to mom and her being there by herself. I don't want to leave her there all by herself."

He sighed and resumed playing with Raven's hair. "…Give me a little time to think about it." It wasn't like he couldn't still call his mother, or drop by on her doorstep, but it was the idea of her, lying in bed at night before bed, thinking about her empty house. "…I promise I'll think about it. If you like, maybe we can go look at apartments next month or something. But I'm not promising anything just yet."

Not while there was a nearly empty bottle of wine a foot and a half in front of them.

"Let me figure out something with her. Maybe we can adopt her some poor, underprivileged kid to keep her company, yeah?" he teased. He was probably more serious than he was letting on; if he could help it, he never wanted his mother to be alone.

He suspected she took her traveling trips as an excuse to take her mind off the failure of her marriage so she could focus on the success of her career; if she didn't have anyone waiting for her at home, he wasn't sure if she even would come home.

Raven nodded, sighing heavily and just relaxing against Jett, closing her eyes. “Well, think of something soon, okay? Maybe you can bribe her with the prospect of you and me giving her grandchildren sometime in the future, yeah? I know she’d eat that up.” And she really might…not that Raven was anywhere near ready to have kids, no. Not even close to pretending to be nearly ready to have kids. She wasn’t going to be a creepy, crappy teen mom. No sir.

The blonde reached out, pouring herself another glass of wine and downing half of it in a gulp. Uh. That had been a bit over the line, to say the least…but who really cared.

She held her half full glass up to Jett and gave a smile. “Come on, you loser. Let’s toast to the New Year. To you screwing up and buying me jewelry, and to me getting angry for no reason what so ever and getting beautiful things to wear because of it. Let’s hope we stay together through whatever, and…all that jazz.”

Jett only narrowly avoided having a heart attack the moment Raven mentioned having children; he was absolutely not in any position to want children—even if they had been older, settled in, with a place of their own. A dog was about as much responsibility as he had pitted himself for, and even then you didn't have to worry about changing diapers or cleaning up vomit or reading bedtime stories…

Thankfully, Raven's change in topic was something he could easily drink to; he reached for his own glass, tapping it to hers. "We'll stay together," he said, sounding as though he didn't have an ounce of doubt. "Regardless of screw ups, or uncalled anger, or threats of kids, we'll work things out. And we'll figure out what to do for mom, and then we'll move in together, have our nice little dog, and do all those fun young couple things."

As long as it wasn't ice skating, he was up for mostly anything.

He leaned forward, pecking Raven lightly on the cheek. "Just as long as you remember that I love you, beautiful. Happy New Year."
