Fergus was on the road alone, which was unusual for him. He was almost always with Flannery or Lemon. The temperature was mild enough, and it had not snowed much in the area. He was grateful because he hated the way the snow clumped in his fetlocks.
He stopped briefly and looked up at the sun, it was fairly high and he figured it must be late morning. there was a leather satchel tied to one of his front legs and he reached into it. He struggled a bit when the flap got stuck on his nose but he jerked and pulled out a small roll of velum.
There was a large rock on the right side of the trail and lay velum on it, unrolling it. He took a few moments to study it again, as he had done earlier when Flannery presented it to him. He knew it was related to one of her quests, and from experience he knew it was a list.
It was a series of images, and the first few seemed to be landmarks or locations. They were ones he recognized actually. The first was a drawing of a pond with a large stone in the center of it. He had been there once with Flannery. He remembered the strange shape of the rock in the pond, it stuck out of the water like a pillar and had an almost perfect hole going through the top of it. this must be is first checkpoint.
He was relived because he was already on his way there, if he kept following the trail he knew where to leave it and find his way to the pond. Fergus picked up the velum 'map' and tried to put it back in his satchel. He was not able to roll it up nicely like Flannery had done so it was a bit crumpled and stuffed in there.
p.s. he has gone on dozens of little quests with Flannery and has gotten used to the way she communicates. She draws images usually symbols or even detailed drawings of things and uses the drawings to communicate her needs and goals to her soquili. any other soquili would probably have no idea what the drawings meant, her strong bond with Fergus and the constant time they spend together have made their relationship unique and has take them a long time to get to this point. to the point where he can make out drawings on a bit of velum and figure out what it is she wants him to retrieve.They have done things like this before so he kind of has an idea of what to do.
