Zia was feeling pretty good about surviving December. December was always sucky, but she appeared to have gotten out alive with minimal drama. Well, for December. Unless some terrible, soul crushing disaster was waiting around the corner with New Years. But right now she could practically whistle.

She was sitting on a lower wall, heels tapping against cinderblocks freely as she took a quick smoke break and plotted her next course of action. It was a boring night, so she was more or less going down a roster of people to bother. Dinner people, couch crashing people, evening activity people. She was still an alley cat. She still hadn't gone home.

But even if she wasn't being terrible interesting tonight she wished someone would be. No negas to chat up, no knights to document. So she lingered a little longer, looking for anyone in a half interesting costume to pounce on.

The days were still short, giving more time for the creatures of the night to come out and prowl the streets. Varuna, while still unsure of many things as a new senshi, was becoming more and more addicted to the high that being powered up brought.

There was a second world that she never knew existed, and she wanted to know everything she could, especially about herself. There was still a lot to learn, even with others’ help.

But with apparently no youma around, there was nothing much for her to do besides explore the city. And the city was disgusting. Full of disgusting people and horrible things. If it weren’t for the fact that she could be someone completely different from her everyday life, she didn’t think she would ever go out like this.

She didn’t even realize she was no longer alone, being unable to feel the presence of civilians, especially when she was on the lookout for youma...

Zia might've been on the look out for the fancy costumes that'd denote a powered... anybody. But she was still energy blind, so when she finally caught sight of Varuna, there was a little indignity about how close she was before she got noticed.

Zia was being a pro at creeping anyway, so, she didn't think the senshi not being totally aware of her was any big thing. But she had a target, and she hopped off her perch and followed.

"Hi!" She chirruped, more to just announce she was even there so she didn't end up having to catch up over some ridiculous distance like scaling a building or something.

She was already analyzing her fuku, trying to see if she could glean a sphere from it. Some were obvious and dripping in practically neon signs of 'THIS IS MY SPHERE' but Varuna was a little more nuanced and didn't have any major tells. So, for Zia's blatant look over all that she ended up saying for it was, "You're shiny."

Varuna spun around on the spot, not having picked up anyone’s energy and clearly hadn’t been expecting a civilian to approach her. Even still, she stared at the young woman with wide eyes, wondering if she also believed her to be a terrorist...

But this civilian didn’t appear to be intent on calling her out on her horrible deeds as a senshi... at least not yet. This woman... she looked about her age, and the fact that she wasn’t running or yelling at her made it a little more, well... encouraging.

And as Zia analyzed her fuku, Varuna was busy analyzing her hair. She was sure she’d had better hair days than this, but she could definitely tell that it was naturally curly. The color was lovely and it looked so soft...

She kept her hands clenched together over her chest, preventing herself from reaching out and trying to touch, trying instead to decipher this woman’s comment.

“Shiny?” she repeated, glancing down at herself and wondering just what about the cascading layers of ruffles of her dress made her shiny.

"Yeah, shiny," Varuna's body language was lost on Zia. She was focused on other things. Like a total invasion of her personal space and tugging on the bow in the back of her fuku before leaning in to examine the one on her bodice.

"I mean, what's your sphere anyway? I would say butterflies, probably, except that can't be it, because I totally already met the senshi of butterflies. You don't look parallel, at all, and... I don't know," She pulled back and put her hands on her hips, looking like this was a puzzle.

"What's your name?"

Varuna blinked and squeaked softly as she was poked and prodded, clearly interesting enough for someone to focus on what she was wearing so intently. She didn’t understand that others’ spheres were more obvious depending on their attire, having only met a few others, but she was amused by the young woman’s guesses.

Amused in a dark, ironic sort of way...

But before she opened her mouth to answer, some fabric shifted and a small, discolored scar on the woman’s chest caught her attention. Hands immediately lifted and reached out to touch it with equally no regard to personal space. It was the same shape that was on the forehead of the cat...

Dark plum eyes stared intently at the scar, before gazing up at the woman in question. She had not seen anything like it, other than on the cat’s forehead... it was such a distinct crescent shape that she couldn’t help the thoughts that swirled in her mind.

“Are you a cat...?” the question was out before she realized how stupid she sounded, and immediately clamped her mouth shut and lowered her head in shame, although her hands remained where they were, fingers barely touching her skin.

It was in instances like these that she remembered why she did her best to keep her thoughts to herself. Answer only when necessary and not make a big deal about things she didn’t understand.

“Varuna...” she managed to squeak out, “Ava--” but the rest of the word was lost in a mumble, already anticipating to be told to shut up and stop saying such stupid things.

The question of whether or not she was a cat caught Zia off guard, because when she was human, that was usually not a very good question. Especially with how careless she'd been about her identity in a few recent months.

"Uhumerrr... Uh... what?" She stammered, and suddenly this chick had her hands on her chest.

Zia's brow shot up and her wide eyes could only blink for a moment before she grabbed Varuna by the wrists and adjusted her hands a proper distance away from her scar. Especially that one. Sue she showed it off plenty to demonstrate just how much of a right she had to hate on Ares, but on a deeply personal level it was a wound that wouldn't go away, and the ugly scars that decorated her entire torso were deep stabs of self consciousness.

But as always with things that rattled her on an emotional level, Zia laughed and joked.

"Ha, no, sorry, honey, you have to at least buy me dinner and a few drinks before you can get to second base."

And then a confused eyebrow quirk. "What's a Varuna?" It didn't sound like a very nice sphere.

Varuna pulled her hands back when they were shifted off the woman’s chest, placing them over her own, instead. She hadn’t meant anything by it, so she didn’t realize she’d done anything that might be perceived as uncomfortable by others. It wasn’t like she was hurting her, right...?

“My name,” she replied softly, still upset by the sight of the scar on the woman’s skin, and unable to shake the connection between the symbol on the forehead of the cat that had awoken her and left her, and the scar. Did she have a scar, herself...? Did all senshi end up looking worn down and beat up...?

“Senshi of Avalanches,” she concluded much stronger this time. She didn’t really understand what made her ‘of avalanches’ when all she could do was make snow appear underfoot, but that’s who she was. She felt it in her whole being.

“Are you a senshi, then...?” This woman was so familiar asking about them, surely she must be one. It was certainly less awkward than asking if she was a cat.

"Oh, Sailor Varuna, okay, I get it," Zia said with a rapid nod. "Okay, yeah, avalanches, I guess that makes a little sense with all this fluff," She concluded and grabbed a corner of the poor senshi's skirt. It wasn't a classic skirt, it had novelty.

"Nope, not a senshi," She said with a casual brushing off and kept poking and prodding her. "How long have you been doing this? You seem kind of timid."

”You seem familiar with senshi,” Varuna pointed out, squeaking in surprise as her skirt was tugged at. She wasn’t entirely sure how to react to the way this woman kept poking at her. She was obviously curious, but she didn’t seem like others who thought senshi were just there to be destructive.

She bristled indignantly and pouted when her timidness was mentioned. Varuna didn’t think she was all that timid. It was just strange being poked and prodded like she was.

“A couple months,” she admitted, although she would be proud to say that she did her best to be as active as she could. Being a senshi was one of the best things that has happened to her, despite a rough start. It was better than wasting away in the basement apartment of her aunt’s house.

"I am intimately familiar with senshi, yes," Zia said with a grin that seemed like it was being forced back, standing up straight with a retained squeal and hands folded behind her back like she had to have them rooted there to avoid continued touching.

"Wow. That's not bad, usually at this stage they're like, running around yelling about how they're gonna die or how they haven't been killed yet so they're obviously invincible." She shrugged. "How are you doing with it?"

How was she doing with it...? Varuna stared at this girl in wonder and surprise. She couldn’t say she’d met many other ‘new’ senshi, so she had no one with whom to compare herself.

“As a senshi... I’m free...” she said softly, mostly to herself as she thought of the years of being forced to be someone she wasn’t. She’d never been physically mistreated... not really... but she wasn’t always as quiet as she was now. Once upon a time, she had a much stronger personality, but over the years, voicing her opinion and trying to be her own person was met with severe resistance, and without anyone there to support her...

There was a purpose to her life now. She didn’t have to be the good little girl who went to school and didn’t talk back... She could make a difference, as a senshi.

She didn’t dare say any of that out loud, but made sure to look this young woman in the eyes, as if to show her she was serious.

“What’s your name?” she asked, realizing she had yet to, and that it hadn’t been given.

Zia couldn't help but feel a small bubble of warmth and pride. So few people attributed their new found power to freedom. Some reacted like they were being punished. She'd also seen excitement with quick acceptance and there might've been a small, bitter part of her that assumed that was because they had always expected the world to hand them power on a silver platter and it finally had.

She'd always felt hateful of people who felt trapped when the universe granted them purpose, greatness, and a destiny of their own and she was left alone and broken to siphon off power that fed off of her like a parasite. Freedom was something she could relate to. Something she craved and to see someone actually acknowledge it forced her face into the sincerest of smiles.

"Oh! Name," Right, introductions. It wasn't until she held out her hand to shake like they were just now beginning their meeting that she realized she'd been absentmindedly touching her scar again, like she usually did after attention had been called to it or she was pondering things. She didn't tend to notice until she needed that hand or someone else pointed i out.

"I'm Zee!"

Varuna stared at the girl, wondering what could possibly be going through her head to give her the expression she was now wearing. Despite realizing how silly her answer had seemed, something about it could have triggered the subtle reaction.

At the very least, she could tell it wasn’t a bad one, and as the young woman reached out her hand, Varuna felt as though she had pleased her somehow.

“Zee,” she repeated, trying it out as she hesitantly reached out to take hold of the offered hand. It was warm... not as flawlessly soft as she would have expected, but if her explanation of being ‘intimately familiar with senshi’ had anything to do with it, a few scars and calluses from who knew what seemed only reasonable.

“Do you usually walk up to senshi so casually...?” she wondered quietly, her soft smile fading as worry overtook her expression. “It’s dangerous...”

"Well not really," Zia argued. "Senshi are rarely older than typical high school students and they're usually just confused."

She hopped back up to sit on the halfwall she'd been perched on before. "I mean, for the most part, even the Negaverse doesn't know what the ******** they're doing, but that's okay, that's what I'm here for."

She looked Varuna up and down before brushing a stray curl behind her ear. "You don't think you're dangerous, do you?"
