Lailah giggled as she walked. Not that she was actually heading anywhere in particular at the moment. For once in her life, she didn't care when her next lesson was, or what duties were going undone. No, all the white lioness was really paying attention to right now was the young lion beside her. They were both damp, and the stream was sitting a little lower in its bed, not to mention that the plants to either side had gotten thoroughly watered.

It was all so completely unlike what the serious young Apprentice normally did and she was enjoying herself completely.

"But there's no big rivers around here, and the stream is fairly shallow...there's just the water hole, and why would anyone want to swim in that?" Lailah was asking as they walked.

"They wouldn't...I guess." He made a face. The water hole could get awfully muddy and he was a prince. Princes weren't supposed to be covered in filth. Still, the common rabble might like it. He gave a mental shrug, turning his head to glower at her. It wasn't as mean as his previous glances might have been but it seemed to have become a bit of a habit of his to glare at others.

He snorted and returned his gaze to the trail ahead.

"Anyway." He continued. "It's not like you're thinking of taking up the hobby, are you?"

With her most recent litter mostly grown, Aysu was back to having free time. It was probably a surprise to everybody (her brothers) when she didn't immediately disappear to the borders and return with a third belly full of cubs (stupid brothers). But she was happy to spend it around the pride, keeping busy in her own ways. She liked having more time to check in on her older offspring, which was how a nice walk had been diverted in the direction of the pair walking along the edge of the water

"Definitely Lailah," she muttered, squinting and trying to figure out who she was with as she walked closer and closer.

"Looks like someone from my side," Uthuli commented, judging by the familiar brown color of the second figure. The closer they got, the more apparent it became that it had to be one of the princes, but he couldn't yet tell which one.

"Are you sure they wouldn't prefer to be left alone?"

A father himself, Uthuli was still tied down by his girls, but he managed enough free time and it wasn't uncommon for him to spend it with Aysu. He wasn't nearly as nosy as she was, though he was starting to understand it more the older his girls got. For now, he could really only roll his eyes as Aysu stubbornly continued.

"Oh shush."

Aysu wasn't going to be deterred. She realized he was right, though, it was one of his cousins. A prince. She shouldn't have been surprised, her eldest were members of the high class, they were more likely to make friends in the higher classes because of it. Especially Lailah. Putting on a smile, she picked up the pace for the last bit of the walk up to interrupt the two of them. Coming from an odd angle, they got into earshot without being noticed.

"Good day!"

He sighed again, continuing at his comfortable pace even when Aysu went ahead. But he he still followed.

"Of course not!" Lailah retorted good-naturedly. "I have no intention of getting completely soaked for no reason at all!" A quick quite paw reached out and ruffled the half-dry blue mane of the lion beside her. "You can't tell me that you're looking forward to how long it'll take that to dry out!" Well, okay, he could, but he'd be lying and she'd know it!

The lioness' attention was abruptly brought back down to earth by an incredibly familiar voice hailing her. She stopped suddenly, yellow eyes wide.

"M-mom? What...what are you doing here?" Why was she here to see Lailah with Yavin and then to assume...to assume something! Because that's what parents did when they saw their kids with someone of the opposite sex, right?

What the--!? "Get off." He snapped at her, moodily, like a cub. His paw came out to jab lightly at her, to get his point across. No ruffling of the mane. "It's your fault that my mane got wet in the first place." And he opened his mouth to continue the argument...uh...conversation, when it became clear that her attention had been snatched away by...

...her mother?!

He straightened and pulled away a little, side-stepping in a not-so-subtle fashion. Still, Yavin wasn't exactly sure what was going on - or about to go on - but Lailah certainly didn't see happy to see her. And it looked like she wasn't alone either. Coming up to join them was another lion. A male. Great. Crowds.

This was just marvellous.

It took a great deal of practice not to take this kind of reaction too personally. She seemed so far removed from her oldest daughter's life, from the very beginning she was a necessary apprentice to a new shaman and that took up so much of her time.. and then when the new cubs arrived, there was tension there. But Aysu would never let it bother her. Her eyes were on Yavin as he awkwardly stepped aside. Her smile widened and she looked back to Lailah.

"Lailah," she greeted her daughter, glancing back to Yavin, "And, ah.."

Once the conversation began and everybody came to a stop, Uthuli had an easy time catching up. He came to a stop just as Aysu was attempting to greet the two of them.

"Yavin," he muttered to Aysu, helping her along. The prince didn't look like he recognized his cousin, but Uthuli could hardly blame him for that. Their family situation was a tad awkward, Selene was really the only one who seemed to go out of her way to visit with and be friendly with all of them.. and she had a lot to gain by being close to her uncle. To everybody else, no doubt, they were just low class background family.

"Right, Yavin."

She didn't stop smiling, or even seem to acknowledge Uthuli otherwise. She was grateful for his help but her attention was on the pair before her- and her mind certainly wandered where Lailah did not want it.

"I was just out for a walk and I thought I saw you," she explained brightly.

Uthuli put on a smile and stood passively by, trying to blend into the background. So far he didn't really have very much to say. It was an interesting sight to behold, the Shaman's apprentice and the prince like this.

Lailah's mouth had shut and her gaze narrowed, but instead of surprise her expression was rife with suspicion. The actual meeting might not have been planned by Aysu, but Lailah was perfectly certain that her mother, renowned for being one of the biggest gossips in all of the Mwezi'Johari, had deliberately decided to come and ruin what had been one of the most enjoyable afternoons of her life.

Still, Aysu was her mother, and the white lioness swallowed the first response that came to mind. Along with the second. And the third.

"I expected you to be home with the kids," she was able to respond at last, tone only slightly accusatory. For now.

Yavin felt...stuck in the middle. Felt as if he wanted to slowly sink into the ground and disappear to leave them to this conversation of theirs. This wasn't his usual 'company' (although he didn't really have a usual company) and he was beginning to feel uncomfortable. He was a prince. He should not be getting involved in these petty family matters...

And if he hadn't liked Lailah it was likely he would have cleared off the moment these newcomers had appeared. As it was, he was sort of stuck between everyone, not sure exactly what was going on or what to say - if anything. It all seemed suspiciously like small talk. Except not. Was there something going on here he wasn't quite aware of yet?

He was also miffed that his name had been forgotten by a member of this 'gathering'.

"I'll just leave you to it then." He dismissed himself gruffly, taking another side step.

Lailah K'chol had always been Aysu's problem child, and it was for no reason anybody could help. It was pure chance that landed her first litter in the high class but the timing meant more than just freedom for the cubs. For Lailah, it meant she was bound to a rank that magnified class differences in the family and offered influences her mother couldn't control, prevent or argue with.

It hurt more than it showed but Aysu kept smiling.

"They're grown up enough," she responded, her tone pleasant but not entirely covering her annoyance, "They don't need supervision."

Not from their mother, anyway, but that was another issue entirely.

Well, this was indeed very awkward. Uthuli wasn't surprised by Lailah's tone of voice, he had daughters, they argued, it all seemed normal enough. He didn't know if this was normal for them, but he was definitely sure this wasn't his place to argue.

He was surprised by Yavin's gruff attempt to excuse himself from the group.

Aysu, too, was surprised by the prince. She turned her attention to him, staring perhaps a few seconds too long as she compared the reception by the two younger lions.

"Well, well," she said, glancing back to Lailah, "Quite the pair you two make."

Silent but curious, Uthuli glanced back and forth between Lailah and Yavin wonderingly. Was Aysu suggesting she suspected they were a couple, would make a good couple or .. what? It seemed highly unlikely she would comment on a friendship, there was something more in what she said for sure.

"No, don't leave!" Lailah insisted, reaching out to cover Yavin's paw with one of her own. She did not want to face her mother and...Aysu's very good friend...by herself! It wasn't that she had anything to be embarrassed about, but it was her mother! Who always wanted to know everything about what everyone did. Especially her kids. Especially Lailah.

It was a bit disconcerting to hear her mother say that her younger sibs didn't need supervision. She could've sworn that Aysu had still been all over her first litter at that age! So the white lioness made a face.

"Well, if they don't need supervision, you don't need to be looking at Yavin and I like we're a gazelle haunch," the Apprentice told her mother primly, trying to regain her calm and dignity.

Oh--damn. Plan foiled. Perfect.

He made a face and rooted himself, casting the three of them somewhat wary stares. He had the distinct feeling that something was going on here. Something suggestive.

"I'm sorry." He said at last - not sounding sorry in the slightest. "I just...don't have a clue what you are all going on about. Are we supposed to be talking in code?"

Yavin's knowledge of such situations were severely limited and he was not the greatest at picking up on subtle words or actions. There was clearly something going on here. Lailah did not want to be left alone with her mother but the reason for why this was eluded him completely. In the end, he gave Uthuli something akin to a pleading look.

PostPosted: Mon Jan 14, 2013 3:20 pm
Aysu could have laughed when Lailah physically stopped the prince from departing, but her stubborn smile was probably pushing it just enough, she didn't need to shove her daughter right over the edge. Not with a laugh anyway.

"I'm not talking in code," she said, looking back to Yavin, "Though I'm not so sure about Lailah."

What a strange simile.

So far Uthuli's presence was entirely useless, though he was gaining some insight into Aysu and her family. Insight he didn't get from the simpler interactions. It was getting more and more awkward by the second so he decided to get it over with.

"Are you two a couple?" he asked, his tone neutral and his face carefully composed, "It's been a while since any shaman has had cubs let alone get married, in fact, I don't remember any stories where the shaman or apprentice had their own families."

Uthuli was lucky to have someone so knowledgeable in the pride's history as his father, he knew a great deal more than he might have otherwise.

Aysu barely held back a snort of laughter at Uthuli's directness. This seemed very out of character for him and she put her full attention on him as he rambled on about the historic patterns in the personal lives of the highest ranked priests.

Well, they did avoid responding to her comment. Maybe this would push them along, especially if the prince wasn't getting it. So she looked back at them expectantly.

Well, yes, she had been talking obliquely because she didn't want to just come out and SAY "mother stop trying to get into my love life" or any variation thereof. But she wasn't going to tell Yavin that.

"There's no code," she muttered, glaring at her mother.

Then the older male asked the question Lailah had been working so incredibly hard to avoid. If not for her white fur, the young lioness would have paled visibly at that inquiry.

"We...I..."

She had absolutely no idea what to say, or how to answer.

Oh.

Oh.

That was what this was about. His heart was pounding and he could feel himself growing hot with embarrassment. And then Lailah was faltering over her answer and he wasn't sure what to say.

Immediate reaction: denial.

But he did sort of like her despite how terribly annoying she could be. When in doubt, deflect! That was his motto, or it would be from today. It seemed like a reasonable thing to do in this situation. Though perhaps later he might worry about shamans and the lack of families. Maybe they all chose work over fun. Over...love. Anyway, enough of that. Back to the conversation.

"Couple?" He wrinkled his snout and continued in an almost accusatory tone: "What do you think?"

Stammering and denial, all completely expected behavior from a couple who didn't realize they were a couple yet. Laughter and mutual denial would be different, more expected of friends who were really just friends. He looked over to Aysu- it was very obvious this was what she wanted from the start.

Judging by Lailah's attitude before this, though, it probably wasn't going to end on the happiest of terms.

Aysu watched the both of them very carefully as they reacted and responded (or attempted to). When Yavin decided to ask what they thought, she couldn't help but laugh- even knowing the prince would probably hate being laughed at but hoping that if he did have an interest in her daughter, that would spare her any sincerely harsh words. From him anyway.

"I think.. that says more than you think."

Uthuli was silent again and shaking his head- but he was smiling.
