The soft gait of Nightlark's trot relaxed her as they headed towards their current employer. Nothing unusual. Just a simple guarding job, from what she understood. Which didn't mean she wasn't wary about the whole thing. One could never trust what sort of cargo some of these folk might be transporting. Of course... she didn't usually trust anyone to begin with. Except a very few people.

The large buck snorted, slowing as he caught sight of a small gathering of people and horses - ha! horses - that he assumed were the ones they were seeking. Nori felt the change and lifted her gaze in the same direction, eyes narrowing slightly as she took in the sight. There were... more then she had expected. Interesting.

"Clearly they left out a bit of information." She muttered to Nightlark, patting his neck. His ears flicked back towards her, coming to a stop just outside the 'ring' of humans and hoofed creatures not worth his time. Once stopped, Nori dismounted, standing beside her partner before sighing and approaching those gathered.

"I'm here for guard duty." She said in a slightly raised, monotone voice. "Nori and Nightlark checking in. Let us know when you're ready." A pause. "All of you."

Ignoring any looks or people that might have tried to talk to her, Nori walked idly along the group, shaking her head at the number. There were too many for one person! Damnit. Unless... there was more then one guard...

"Oh lord, this is going to be a long one. Nightlark!" She called the buck, turning to await him. If he listened. Stupid traders and rich people.

Pyotr rode to the rendezvous point quietly, motioning Pesnya to scout from off the trail when they drew near. As the rabbit disappeared into the brush, he came into sight of his band of charges. A quick but casual glance told him that the promised numbers were present, as well as the first guard that he had been informed of. Usually, he declined jobs where he had to partner with another, but the pay on this one was too good to pass up in good conscience, even though he was not precisely strapped for money.

Of course, the high pay for a relatively simple job almost guaranteed complications, but it was not as though he could not handle anything that came his way. Besides, with all the talk of wolves in the north of late, it could be simple paranoia that had the money-grubbing cowards parting with their beloved coin. Time would tell.

For now, he nodded at his employer, then eyed the other guard.

He had no problem with her being female - he was an equal opportunity cynic. Instead, what irked him the most upon first sight of his soon-to-be partner was the guardian by her side. Pyotr liked animals. They were, in fact, one of the very few things that he liked. Chosen, on the other hand, tended to be more trouble than they were worth. Lovely.

He pasted a cordial look on his face that no one would have guessed was perfectly fake and rode up to the woman. "Nori, I assume?"

Still shaking her head and muttering things under her breath, Nori did not see the gentleman approach her. Nightlark, on the other hand, watched him with narrowed eyes, chest puffed out to look more 'intimidating'. Or perhaps to show off how nice he looked. He looked nice, didn't he? Look at his antlers! They were much better then the hoofed creature he rode.

Turning her head slightly to regard the one that spoke, Nori raised an eyebrow curiously. "Depends on who's asking." She replied carefully, turning to fully face him. There was something about the way he held himself... different from those she was to guard. "Are you a second guard, then?" Well wasn't that just fantastic? He knew her name already! And their current employers had not seen fit to tell her his name, let alone that he'd be here!

Raising a hand to gently pat Nightlark's shoulder, the woman sighed. "I won't lie. I'm glad there is another besides me. This group is a little too large for a single guard." Probably just as arrogant as the Nobles tended to be.

"And you are?" That skeptical look appeared along her face as she sized him up. Not... bad. He definitely looked like he could hold his own.

"I am," he said, mostly ignoring the guardian's posturing. It seemed that their employer had not told her of him, then. He had been hired on after her, or so he had been told. Apparently, the number in the caravan had increased unexpectedly and there had been need of him.

He glanced at the fussing, gesticulating merchants and raised a wry brow. "They do seem to be a handful." They were amongst his least favorite employers - fussy, pompous, in need of babying, and usually withholding important details. Pyotr really did despise merchants.

He returned his attention to the woman. "My manners desert me. Pyotr Volkov, at your service."

A mostly rude snort was her response to what the merchants seemed to be. Oh that was putting it nicely! She'd have phrased it more along the lines of 'pains in the a** with too much arrogance to know what to do with'. But... as much as she could complain and b***h or find this 'babysitting' a nuisance... they did pay generously. Most of the time.

Sighing, Nori crossed her arms and regarded their employers as well. "It's my hope they will leave us be once we get moving. Let us do our 'job' properly." She let him see her roll her eyes at this before she turned to give him her full attention. Something that made Nightlark snort and move closer, so he could stare down his snout at the man.

"Interesting name." She mused, giving him a sly quirk of her lips. "I'm Nori. And this vain creature is Nightlark." The buck in question snorted and may have stood just a little straighter. "Pleasure is mine, Mr. Volkov."

"Got anything else ya prefer to go by?" Or easier as she probably would fail at getting the pronunciation of his name wrong. Or just call him Pete for however long she got away with it.

Pyotr glanced at the buck, but he was not overly concerned and not the least intimidated. In his experience, there were two types of merchants: those who completely ignored the guards save for when something went wrong, and those who felt the need to give their opinion about every little detail, especially when something went wrong. He was hoping that these would be the former, but he could not be certain until they started moving.

"Mistress Nori," he said, testing the name. It was, after all, as unusual to him as his was to her. "I am sure the pleasure is all mine."

"I have been called Wolf. Or Peter, if you prefer," he said, well aware of the irony of holding both names.

Oh he was a charmer, wasn't he? She wasn't a 'charmed' by it as others might be. Or so she assumed. He did have the handsome features and pretty lips playing in his favor. Surely girls just adored him? Which had the chosen glancing about the merchants again. It would be just her luck if they had some of the younger girls who were easily flattered. And loved to flirt.

"Just Nori will do. I'm not used to having such titles applied to me." She gave him a rueful smile. "And you may just rethink that later. I can be... hard headed company." And she wasn't ashamed of it. Just giving fair warning. She did not put up with s**t.

Okay that had her laughing, and just like that, she seemed to have decided Pyotr wasn't half bad company and something in her posture relaxed. "Let me take a wild guess, and assume you've heard plenty of Peter and the Wolf jokes?" She paused. "Wolf is more unique. Very fitting."

Movement in the line of merchants drew her gaze again, the scowl returning to her face. It irked her that they had not seen fit to tell her that not only had their numbers increased, but they were hiring a second guard. Made them even more untrustworthy in her mind. "Looks like our employers are almost ready. How many jobs like this have you done?" She asked curiously.

"I am certain I can defend myself," he replied. It would be inconvenient if her hardheadedness jeopardized the job, but so long as that was not the case, he could put up with a less than amiable personality. In fact, he might take some small amusement in stirring up her temper, should he grow bored on this mission.

His only response to her commentary on his name was a rather lupine grin.

How many such jobs had he done? "I'm afraid I've lost count," he said. The information was so inconsequential that he had banished it to some little-used corner of his mind. In truth, if he took a moment to think about it, he could dredge up the number, but it hardly seemed worth the effort. Though escort missions were not his favorite type of job, he was not unfamiliar with them. He eyed the young female. "And yourself?" he inquired, keeping an eye on the merchants out of his periphery.

Her lips twitched, and maybe there was an inkling of like in her posture. This guy had some spunk! And he was quite charming. Which Nightlark was not fond of, if the feelings she was getting from him were anything to go by. "I'll keep that in mind." She smirked, truthfully thankful to have another on board for this mission.

Nori laughed at that grin, lightly 'punching' Wolf (she opted for the more unique nickname she'd remember well) in the arm. "You ain't bad." She said in something kin to a compliment.

She faced a similar lack of keeping count herself. "A few." The chosen said with a shrug, having enough experience in this field to feel confident she could handle an escorting job well enough. "Well, looks like- " Whatever she'd been about to say was cut off as a silent dark.. feathered creature appeared from the sky to land along her shoulder. Jackyl cawed softly, clicking his beak as he regarded Pyotr. Then ignored him and nibbled at Nori's hair once. "Guess the road is clear... for now." She said, reaching up to pat the rook on the head before he hopped and flapped up to perch on Nightlark's antlers.

"So how do you want to go about this? Shall we take up the front of the line?"

Pyotr arched a vaguely amused brow at Nori's method of...conveying affection, but made no comment. She was a most unusual female. This job would doubtless show him whether or not that was a good thing, but in the meantime, she should at least entertain him. Ah, and at the very least, she was not inexperienced. Of course, he had no way of knowing for certain whether she was any good at the job, but instinct suggested that she was at least competent.

The bird's appearance did not make him flinch, but he did find it interesting. If such a beast felt loyal enough to stay with her, then Nori could not be all bad. The way an animal reacted to its master was always telling, and this one's attitude clearly conveyed affection. The Guardian did not count, all things considered.

"That depends," he mused, his cool, grey eyes taking on a wicked glint. "Do you suppose our clients know the way to Edinburough?"

Most attacks they might face would come from bandits at the rear, but Pesnya could act as a rear guard as easily as he could scout ahead. Of course, in the event that there was trouble, it would be easier if someone were at the front to direct the merchants. There were advantages to working either end of the line, really.

In a more serious tone, he said, "I suggest we range up and down the line, or each take an end. Easier to keep an eye out that way."

She looked over the straps to the simple travel pack that rested along Nightlark's hindquarters, making sure it was secure and ready for travel. The buck stood still, head held high - ignoring the rook perched on him, who just ignored them all right back - and seeking a little attention because he was a pretty buck, wasn't he? Oh yes he was! Nori just shook her head at him, caving in to scratch delicately along his neck.

"Hmm... there's always a way to find out." Nori teased with an equally wicked look to her features. "But alas, we'd not get our full pay."

The playfulness she'd shown died down for the moment, her blue eyes growing more calculated as she scanned the merchants. A little more on the larger side of an escort, but she could have Jackyl fly overhead and warn them of anything sinister that might be slinking up on them. Like bandits. Thieves looking for an easy target. And once they started moving, she was fairly confident that even their employers could manage to follow the road without either herself or Wolf leading them the entire time. Or so she hoped.

"I agree with ranging up and down the line. It allows us to keep better track of everyone and everything going on. Verses one of us at either end." And hey, they wouldn't be as bored that way! Not that she was admitting that may have been part of her reasoning. "My Jackyl here can keep watch from the sky, let us know if anything suspicious moves towards the line." Nori added, glancing up at the rook, who gave them a blank look, but dipped his beak as if in acknowledgement.

"And I've eyes on the ground to catch anything your rook might miss," he told her, deciding that it might be wise to mention his rabbit. "I believe we are well covered. Nothing left but to move...and it looks like we are ready to do so."

He had been keeping half an eye on the merchants. As he spoke, they were shouting to each other and making broad gestures, and the first wagon lurched to a jerky start. Time to move.

"Shall we?" he said, then turned his horse about without really waiting for an answer. The Frisian snorted approval at finally being able to get going, and eagerly trotted over to the line. Pyotr spoke briefly with their main employer before settling into the relaxed pose of a guard in for a long ride. If there was some hint of military alertness to him, well, few would notice and among them, who would bother to comment?

Oh? So he had a companion that was around somewhere as well. He could have left it unmentioned, but the fact he hadn't earned him a few more points of respect in her book. "So we have a little backup in case we ourselves miss something." She murmured with a nod. "Aye, we probably should get to that. The longer we sit still in one location, the juicier a target we become."

Nori looked towards the merchants as the wagons creaked and began moving forward. Well, looked like introductions were over and work was to begin.

She watched with some amusement as Wolf turned his horse away. "He's quite the individual, wouldn't you agree?" Nori teased her guardian, earning a huff and headbutt. "Right, can't let him show you up." Mounting up quickly, she pulled a few crackers out of her pack to offer Jackyl. He snatched them up quickly and eyed her. "Scout." She said softly, running her fingers along his feathered chest before he took off. With a nudge, Nightlark trotted along, sticking towards the end of the group until the last wagon was moving.

When she felt everything was traveling along nicely enough, Nori directed Nightlark back up the line towards Wolf. Of course the buck thought it hilarious to trot up as silently possible and see just how 'alert' this male was! Nori just sighed.

"Not giving you trouble already, are they?" he inquired without bothering to turn around and look at the pair of them. It would take more than a buck attempting to be sneaky to ruffle the ex-soldier's feathers. For that matter, it would require a stealthier beast than a Guardian to get the drop on him. If he knew the buck's efforts were deliberate, he gave no sign. Instead, he glanced back at Nori.

"Merchants can't keep their eyes off of you?" he wondered. It was sure to be a very long ride if he was bored enough already to start teasing his temporary partner. Sometimes, he could go half a trip without starting anything. Or perhaps it was just Nori who warranted this treatment.

He did wonder how she would react to his remarks, it was true. Few people actually interested him, and he was not yet certain whether she would prove worth his time, but he was stuck with her for the length of this job, so he may as well find out now whether it would be worth it to invest any genuine effort into amiable relations with her.

The Guardian was not very happy to have his attempt dashed so easily. He grumbled and snorted, ears flattening as he moved up beside the horse this other rode. Nori, however, snorted with amusement, twisting her pale blond hair up before responding. "Oh you know how it is, a few suck ups here. A couple small promises asked there. Oh and don't forget the several words of 'thanks' for taking the time to do this job."

Nori glanced at Wolf with a sly grin. "I could give them something to look at~" Nightlark rolled his eyes, snorting. Snickering, Nori relaxed, preparing for a long ride. Her traveling companion seemed to be entertaining enough, and he was sweet and gentlemanly. "Then again, who d'ya know they're looking at me and not you?" She asked with a flutter of her eyelashes. Was she a terrible minx? Oh yes. Yes she was.
