Ailinsy

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Character Name: Ailinsy (Lin, for short)
Age: 24
Gender: female
Sexual Orientation: heterosexual
Craft/Rank: Junior Weyrwoman (Igen)

Personality: Ailinsy is a capable, competent young woman, but she is not quite easy to get along with. She usually gives the impression of being a very serious, sober young lady, and she is. But only when she considers herself "on duty." On the (very) rare occasions when Lin decides to relax and enjoy herself, she laughs self-consciously and rarely indulges in teasing even her closest friends. If she put forth more effort, she might have more friends, but Impressing early more or less guaranteed that her closest bond would always be to Serith, and no human can really hope to compare, thus it seems she will always hold herself a little too distant to make really good friends with anyone. Whether this is a cause or an effect of her dutiful nature is unknown, but it cannot be argued that Lin's primary concern is Serith and then the Weyr.

Despite the fact that Lin doesn't easily make friends and is uncomfortable in relaxed social settings, the young woman would really like to have people she can confide in, and the lack of them (no offense to Serith) can leave her severely depressed. Not suicidal, or anything, but bitter and full of self-recrimination with a tendency toward pessimism. Anybody who has the misfortune to be in her company during these periods will be subjected to clipped, vaguely argumentative responses that are likely to shut down most topics of conversation after a few salvos. ("Did you see that pretty necklace Cami was wearing?" "The gems came from a mine that uses children.") Cold weather exacerbates this tendency, so it's a good thing she lives in a desert Weyr.

Lin is a very hard worker. She doesn't forget to eat when she's working, or bathe, but if she's given a task or told that there's a rule she has to follow, she does so. She is not someone who shirks work or circumvents the rules just because it's easier to do so. The problem is that when she sees others taking shortcuts or who are simply hindering her in her work, she will inform them politely but firmly that they can either help or relocate so she can't see them, but they can't keep doing what they're doing. Later, once she finishes what she's doing and if she remembers, there's a decent possibility she'll track the offenders down and instruct them in more detail as to how they can avoid being taken to task like this in the future (i.e. they could do what they're supposed to do).

While Lin makes a good and devout follower, it is not a lack of direction that makes her so. She is simply able to see the big picture and put her own ego and goals aside in order to accomplish what needs doing. Right now she is the junior weyrwoman, which means that her primary role is to publicly support the policies of the senior weyrwoman, whether or not she agrees agrees with them privately. It can be difficult to tell with her when she's in favor of something based on its merits or just doing her job since she tries to conceal her insecurities, doubts, or shortcomings behind a generally serious demeanor which does not easily invite conversation. Those who watch her closely might notice that she sleeps less when she's forced to do things she doesn't personally agree with and is more prone to bouts of onion chopping, even though onions make her eyes water.

Appearance: Standing just a little taller than the average woman, perhaps 5' 8" or so, Lin seems to have been made to look grown men in the eye, meeting anyone's gaze with her steady brown-eyed stare. Her expression is almost always serious, though when she does smile it is like she is bestowing a gift on whomever has earned her pleasure. She has always been a slender woman with minimal curves, and though she secretly wishes she might have been blessed with more ample breasts and a more pleasantly rounded bottom, she is relieved that she is not fat. Lin has dark brown hair that is difficult to style, and so she usually wears it in a long braid down her back or pulled back in a bun. Her skin is fair and either burns or freckles in the sun. When she was younger she had spots and picking at them left some scarring on her chin and forehead.

Other: She enjoys cooking and finds it relaxing, so when she is feeling particularly stressed she will sneak down to the kitchens to help out.

History

Ailinsy is the daughter of a dragonhealer and a kitchen worker at Igen. From an early age she was devoted to learning both crafts, but she took more readily to work in the kitchen than work with dragons, and her mother would rather not have a small child underfoot when she was dealing with such large creatures. When she was old enough, Lin was sent to the creche to be raised with the other children, but she continued to live with her parents and enjoy certain special privileges, such as all-hours access to the kitchen and the opportunity to sit with her mother while she performed routine physicals for those dragons who said they didn't mind.

When she was old enough to stand for Impression, she did so. She Impressed gold Serith when she was fourteen and immediately devoted herself to her dragon and her duty. She was nothing out of the ordinary as a weyrling insofar as natural ability, but her dedication was remarkable.

The only real disadvantage to her Impression was that it came so early, most of the turns she would have spent learning how to flirt and deal with men were spent learning how to care for a dragon and lead a Weyr. Her first Flight came late, three turns after Impression, and resulted in a very small clutch. Unfortunately, the rider whose bronze caught Serith did not take her youth and inexperience into account, and his casual roughness and unthinking selfishness in the furs made her reluctant to seek other lovers. Instead she threw herself into her training and whatever tasks she was given with even more fervor than before.

The second time Serith rose, Lin was twenty. She was caught by a different bronze whose rider was far more considerate of Lin's needs and shyness. She formed a crush on the man, the first serious crush of her life, but the timing was very bad, as were other things about the situation, which ended in Lin being sent to Fort Weyr to train for an unspecified duration due to the fact that it was the F'real whose bronze had pursued and ultimately caught Serith, and Ninuta was jealous. She sent Lin away to prevent her from forming any inconvenient romantic attractions. That was the idea.

In actuality, things didn't quite go as planned. Lin spent the first two turns of her assignment doing exactly as she was expected to have done, learning how to run a Weyr without stepping on anybody's toes and fostering goodwill between leadership Igen and Fort while forming no close friendships with anyone, as per her instructions. As time passed, however, the enforced isolation became increasingly difficult to endure.

The main cause of Lin's weakened resolve was a persistent bluerider named N'ial. He was a turn or two younger than she, and his dragon, Danyth, was several turns younger than Serith. Both of them were clever and amusing, and above all friendly. It took four months after she began to talk to him for Lin to begin also to talk to the riders who weren't directly involved in running Fort Weyr. Danyth had convinced Serith it was the right thing to do, and eventually loneliness and gentle pressure from those who seemed to care about her wore her down and Lin began speaking to her hosts in an unofficial capacity.

By the end of the turn, for the first time in her life, Lin was surrounded by people she knew well and even felt friendly toward. Her cool demeanor was warming, though her sense of duty continued to dictate her actions in official areas. Throughout this thaw, it was N'ial with whom she grew closest. A touch of romance entered their relationship as Lin found herself falling for the bluerider, who could always bring a smile to her face and made her feel beautiful, just by the way he looked at her.

It was as their friendship began to blossom into something more that Serith began to glow, as will a gold who is ready to rise. Duty demanded that Lin take her dragon back to Igen Weyr, and although she didn't want to be forced into bed with a rider she'd not seen or spoken to in turns, she had no choice but to return to her birthplace. There, Serith was flown by a bronze in a short flight that produced another small clutch.

The flight's brevity was due in large part to Lin's reluctance to participate at all, even though Serith was excited to have so many old acquaintances to get to know. For Lin it was uncomfortable to be bedded by F'real, whose dragon caught Serith. She had been living in celibacy since Serith's last flight, three turns ago, and he was not aware of that fact. It was an experience as painful as her first time had been, made worse by the fact that she wished she was with someone else the whole time.

It was almost a relief to Lin when Serith's small clutch of eggs hatched, even though the clutch was nothing but greens, blues, and a single brown. The hatching meant that she and Serith could go home, and much to her amazement, "home" meant Fort Weyr. They left as soon as they were able, though Lin did not appear to be in any hurry to leave while she was at Igen Weyr, and she did not stint in any of her duties there at any time, except that she failed to mention her growing camaraderie to the Igen Weyrwoman.

When she returned to Fort Weyr, Lin practically fell into N'ial's furs. He was a careful, considerate lover who knew what he was doing and did it very well. If Lin hadn't been in love with him before, her inexperienced heart was definitely his after that. Fortunately, it seemed he reciprocated her feelings, and all was very happy at Fort Weyr, and during the next turn she grew to know and understand herself and her dragon better.

Her happiness with N'ial might have been what prompted Serith to rise such a short time after her last flight. Barely two turns after her third clutch, Serith began to glow golden once more. By this time, Lin had no interest in being with anyone else but N'ial, and when one of the bronzeriders approached her to offer her the option of using N'ial as a stand-in for Serith's flight, Lin agreed, even though this meant being flown by a Fort bronze instead of returning to Igen as she ought to do.

Serith

User ImageName: Serith
Color: gold
Age: 10 turns
Rank: junior queen

Personality: Serith is not much of an independent thinker. She agonizes over doing the right thing, especially when it comes to making decisions, and looks to Ailinsy for guidance much of the time. However, once a decision is made, she will not go back on it or second-guess herself. Serith is capable of being a firm enforcer, but in truth she would rather other dragons obeyed her because they agree with her, rather than because they have no choice, which is part of why she works so hard to make sure her decisions are the correct ones, and defensible ones. She is an open-minded queen who values structure, but is not obsessed with the idea of a firm hierarchy. In fact, she likes to surround herself with greens and blues, hoping that having all those different opinions will help her come up with the right one, and preferring that the thoughts don't come from people with too much authority, just in case they decide she's unfit. For that matter, Serith just likes to have company and to be amused. Serith can find something amusing in almost any situation, and is often responsible from keeping Lin from taking herself too too seriously. She can be a silly, frivolous creature at times, and she isn't very independent, but that's what Lin is for, right?

Appearance: Serith is generally considered unremarkable from a medical point of view, as she is neither especially fast nor especially strong. If anything, it could be said that Serith is a bit frail for a gold. What makes her stand out among others of her color is just that - her color. Serith's golden hide gives the impression of being patchy and poorly cared for from a distance, but in fact it is just that her hide is multicolored in a tortoiseshell pattern ranging from a dark, antique gold to a pale, champagne-color. The mottled colors provide absolutely no camouflage for the queen, as there is nowhere on Pern where she could blend in, even if she wasn't the size of a gold dragon.

Why this pair?
When Serith hatched and realized that her hide was gold, and that she would have to be responsible and possibly in charge of all the dragons around her, the little dragonet was horrified, but standing on the sands was a responsible young woman whose serious nature and strong sense of duty would make up for all the shortcomings Serith was certain she, herself, possessed which would make her unfit for leadership. In return, Serith would be able to provide companionship for Lin, guaranteeing that there is at least one person (well, dragon) in the world who will like her no matter what and point out the silver linings to all those clouds Lin's mind churns up. Serith and Lin are also in agreement on a number of points of Weyr policy, and although they are not in a position to act on them one of the pair's favorite ways to go to sleep at night is to discuss their plans for the future, if they were running the Weyr.

Filcher

User ImageName: Filcher
Color: green
Age: 2 turns

Personality: Not very bright, but impressively lusty, Filcher has already laid two clutches since hatching, although no one was able to find either one of them. She is attracted to shiny things of all shapes and sizes and tries her very best to steal them stealthily. With small objects she can manage to get them to her Secret Stash between Lin's trunk and the wall, but larger objects are more problematic and she occasionally has to grab onto them and then just drop off the edge of something and hope she can make it between before she and the shiny hit the ground.

History: Filcher's egg was a gift to Lin from N'ial after the last time Lin returned to Fort so that Serith could be flown by an Igen bronze. She had been a nervous wreck, miserable after F'real's Erlith flew Serith again, further cementing Ninuta's hatred of her, and he had made a present of a flit egg he'd acquired on a whim. He told Lin that the firelizard would be a way for her to stay close to him even when they couldn't be physically close. The flit turned out to be a lusty little green who was just smart enough to carry messages, but not to do much else. Lin loves her anyway because she is a gift from N'ial and reminds her of him.
