Hanratty is basically big dumb somewhat loveable bro.
Pros:
- As long as he isn't riled up, Hanratty is a very agreeable fellow. When he's just chilling with is bros, he's about the most laid-back guy you'll ever meet. Even the most obnoxious people will find it difficult to get on his nerves.
Hanratty is very tolerant of others. He doesn't care about heritage, profession, gender, sexuality, beliefs ... really, everything. If people try to explain their differences to him, he will sit patiently and listen, and then file it away under "Don't get it, don't care." Without any prejudices, he's able to get along with just about everyone ... as long as they aren't competing with him for girls, or being such a colossal jerk that even Hanratty can't ignore them. Even colossal jerks may eventually befriend him, though, as long as they quit acting up. Hanratty doesn't hold grudges. That would take way too much mental effort.
Hanratty has a heaping helping of self-confidence. He knows he can do whatever he sets out to do, and do it well. Even when things don't go his way, it usually doesn't get him down. He'll succeed next time for sure! Although Hanratty believes he is the best, he doesn't brag or try to put others down. There's no reason to go talking trash and picking fights unless there's a girl involved.
Cons:
- Hanratty can be unpredictable. Especially when there are ladies concerned. Hanratty may be laid-back, just bro'in it up with his bros, and then shift into competitive-mode with them if an attractive female strolls by.
...speaking of which, Hanratty is kind of a fail with the ladies. If his slow wits don't scare them off, his behavior surely will. He tries to impress them by fighting other males and showing off feats of strength. Usually inappropriately. Hanratty would beat up a girl's boyfriend to impress her ... and then be honestly confused when she wasn't thrilled out of her head.
Hanratty is ... well ... bull-headed. He is terribly stubborn. For example, even though his attempts at wooing ladies generally don't work, he will keep on trying and trying and trying. It takes an outrageous amount of failure to convince him to change tactics. While his stubborn refusal to quit might be good in some circumstances (say, if he ever managed to Impress a dragon and went fighting Thread), usually it's just a spectacular fail and an irritation to others.
History: As a Weyrbrat, the son of an unidentified dragonrider and a mostly disinterested caverns worker, Hanratty has Stood for his share of Hatchings. Every one he was able to attend, in fact, since Hanratty generally does what he is Supposed To Do and refuses to quit. If he weren't a Weyrbrat, it's highly doubtful that Hanratty would ever have been Searched, and his appearance at Hatchings is more of a formality than anything. It seems highly unlikely that Hanratty will ever Impress a dragon. His failure to Impress hasn't bothered him, though, and he remains cheerful in the face of his looming 21st birthday.
