She watched the cracks form holes in her body. Little windows to her soul for the world to peer into. She felt herself crumbling. Pieces for the world to sweep away without a care. Chip by tiny chip, she watched bits of herself fall to the ground with a light tinkling sound. She felt hollow, as if the wind could blow and she would whistle until she finally became dust and blew away. Part of her wished she could, the more the breaking continued. But as usual, she observed as they healed themselves, reversing their frightening decent and becoming whole again. She watched as she became herself again, and felt grounded once more.
Risti let her breath out after holding it in while watching herself fall apart like trampled porcelain. She felt better now, but was ready for the next attack of breaking. She stood in a clearing, unaware of how she had gotten there. She looked around for her family, her brown eyes welling with tears. Usually she would not have been alarmed by being alone, but when she felt the breaking coming she always wanted her mother by her side. Her mother would understand. She was a child of the twisted tunnel as well, she knew what it was like to be strange, to feel the terror of being different.
Her large, fluffy ears picked up the sound of one of her siblings in the distance and she was comforted again. At least they were close. She relaxed, examining her surroundings and wondering how she had gotten here. She must have been so focused on the breaking that she had wandered blindly away from her siblings' game of tag. She vaguely remembered being angry at one of her siblings for cheating, or for tricking her. She couldn't quite pin what the source of her distress had been. The more she calmed herself the more she was comfortable being alone. Perhaps it was better that she be in solitude at the moment.

Her kitten-like ears swiveled around, the fur inside them quivering, picking up loud zooming and whizzing noises that were fast approaching. She stayed where she was, laying on the ground for a while longer to avoid more fissures in her flesh. She bent her neck around to look for the source of the noise. She thought for a moment that it might be her brother coming to find her for more tag, but the pitch of the voice sounded different, slightly off.
"Who are you?" she asked the noises quietly, still searching for the owner of the zooms and zips and zams. Whatever it was, it sounded like fun.
She rose from the ground slowly, her tail twirling around behind her like a prowling cat's. Risti pretended to be a mountain lion hunting its prey, waiting to pounce on the excited noise-maker when he came by. She wouldn't hurt him, she only wanted to play. She even tried growling like a lion, figuring that it would add to the fun noises.
"GRRRRAARRR...RARARAR!" No matter how she tried to make it right, the noise sounded funny in the mouth of a young filly. She giggled at herself, letting her guard down from the approaching stranger. She wasn't worried. Anything that made noises like that couldn't be too threatening, right?

He had appeared almost out of nowhere, and she was so shocked that she fell back down to the ground onto her rump. She checked quickly to make sure she hadn't...broken...anything. No, all was well. She looked up again to see him staring at her. The loud noises had ended for the time being, it seemed. She blinked her large brown eyes at him innocently, trying to figure out what he was staring at, swaying back and forth to draw his eyes from side to side. Yes, he was definitely staring at her.
She smiled at him excitedly. Whatever game he had been playing, she was interested in learning how to play it as well. It had sounded like much more fun than hide and seek or tag. Maybe it was a super combination of the two of them, all rolled into one noisy, epic, amazing game.
As he stared at her, she took the time to study his appearance as well. She saw a purple hue to his pelt that shimmered when the light hit certain spots but was otherwise very hard to spot against the black. She enjoyed the stripy feathers that hung from his mane and tail, but his eyes were strange. Flamy and purple, they seemed to burn holes in her fragile skin the more he stared at her. But she wasn't afraid. She knew better than to be afraid of appearances, especially since she and her siblings were so odd themselves. Her tail flicked behind her as she stood again to examine him more. She hadn't seen him around here before...or heard him. And she knew she would have heard him.
"Who are you?" she repeated, still looking at him curiously and giggling lightly.

The colt seemed wildly distracted, as if he couldn't focus on her without going cross-eyed. Her head instinctively tilted at his reaction to her and she held herself with her tail as his purple eyes examined the cracks in her skin. "Hello Gideon, my name is Ri," she said, feeling as if she should either be speaking very slowly or super fast. She wasn't sure if he had even heard her by the way he was looking at her. Perhaps he spoke another language...one with lots of loud noises and hollering.
"What were you doing, Gideon?" she asked curiously, speaking a little loudly on accident. She wasn't sure exactly what he had been doing to make all of those noises, but she still wanted in on whatever game he was playing. She hopped up and down a little, showing him that she was ready to learn how to play. She hadn't been too good at imitating his noises, but she was sure he could teach her. She smiled at the colt, her skin crumbling and making her blush.
