Sumac’s time was done and he finally felt free. Yesterday had been the last day of his service to Cardinal and he had escaped unnoticed in the dead of the night before Cardinal could force him into another challenge for another period of slavery. Sumac had flown all night and was now far from the Six’s herd. A strange sense of solitude washed over him. He had never interacted with too many from the herd but to be out here in the silence of the world made him feel strangely lonely. He did something he didn’t expect. He started to hum. A bad habit he had picked up since he had watched the little filly Ca. He wasn’t all that musically inclined but he could carry a simple tune and while he didn’t dance like Punk and his daughter; Sumac found that his humming often matched the steady rhythm of his hoof beats. It meant his humming was slow and sounded more like a funeral dirge, but that was alright. Who would listen to him anyway? He was alone out here now. He had no herd and no place to belong. Maybe it was for the best, but it still made him feel empty inside. He wanted love and belonging still it really didn’t matter what he wanted for all living things he touched ended up poisoned by him. A part of him hopped that one day he would end up poisoning himself but that didn’t seem to be the case as the years dragged by.

The mare gave a grunt as she heaved her prey in the shade of a corpse of trees. The sun was starting to rise and pretty soon she would have to retreat toward the darkness..somewhere. The mare was in a bit of a pickle seeing as she had to go further out to hunt. Well that and she woke up relatively in the dead of night rather than catch the dusk. Oh if only her other sin was gluttony and not sloth. Tck...But it was worth it as she stared down at the beast below her with a ravenous hunter. She tore her fangs into the still barely breathing animal drinking her fill, her hooves keeping the beast still and pressing down on wounds with her hooves in order to increase the blood flow. Drops of crimson dotted her white pelt as her tail lashed out behind her in ecstasy. Oh how she loved the thrill of the hunt, but feeding even more so! Her golden eyes seemed to roll in the back of her head from the pleasure of it all. It was only because she was full that she released the beast from her death kiss dropping on the ground all but lifeless. Rayne grunted licking up the last bits of blood from the wound before lifting her head to watch the skies. She wondered where on earth could she go where it was mostly shaded now that the sun was just about fully out. Her eyes squinted not used to the brightness of it all. Ugh. Damn it all!

The sunlight coming up was a painful reminder that while he was feeling alone and depressed the rest of the world continued their happy little existence without him. Of course he could go back to Cardinal but what would that do? He would be beaten and tortured more than ever. No he would never go back to that. There was a time when he had traveled alone, but back then he didn’t really think. It was keep moving and keep alive. He wasn’t sure he could go back to that either, but it didn’t really matter. He would figure out a plan latter. He was tired from his escape and needed a place to rest. He refused to just sleep in the open and was looking for a place when the scent of blood caught his attention. Keeping his wings tucked close ready to splay them out in an attack or to frighten he crept forward cautiously. He wasn’t sure what could be ahead of him, possibly a large hunting cat or a coyote pack. It didn’t really matter. Heading toward the scent it wasn’t long until he spied a corpse of trees. He thought he saw something move but when he tried to focus on it the thing was gone. Below was a mangled corpse that looked like it had been stepped on by an Azrein. Aloud he called out. “Hello? Is anyone there?” He wanted to see if anyone was injured or hurt and in need of help. He couldn’t touch but he could fetch.

As she licked her mouth, she heard the sound of footsteps. Who on earth could possibly be walking around in this hateful sun?! She gave a snarl baring her fangs as she scuttled as close to the corpse as possible and behind a dead tree. There was a pause as the stallion came forward looking down at her now freshly dead kill. The mare gave a grunt eyeing the male and taking in his scent. He smelt woodsy and...something else. She couldn't quite put a hoof on it. Rayne felt no harm from him seeing as she had just ate and was full of sustenance, and so made herself known by standing up and giving a snort. "Sure. Me." Her voice was a silken kind of lazy as she answered his call. She gave a fanged grin waving her tail a little as she stepped over the dead vegetation and stood in front of him, her golden eyes studying his delicious body. "Salutations! What are you doing here in this god awful light?" She asked idly seeing no harm in making conversation. After all, this male was the first stallion she had the pleasure of speaking to without making lunch out of him seeing as she had just fed on the thing between them. Ahh it was delicious too!"

He watched as the blood speckled ghost came out of the shadows a bit. Not enough to touch the coming light, but enough to be seen plainly. “Trying to find a decent place to sleep. I’ve traveled far and am tired.” He eyed the mare surprised at her. The fangs and the blood on her coat made him wonder if she had killed the creature at their feet or she had discovered and fed on the corpse. “I’d prefer a place out of the light for now. I’m not too worried about predators since most wouldn’t be foolish enough to try and eat something covered in poison.” He swished his tail letting the sumac plants there rattle. He really wasn’t too concerned with the possibility of the mare trying to eat him, but he figured he owed it to her to warn her so she would keep her distance and stay safe. He really did feel guilty for the ones that “Still trying to just fall asleep in the oncoming sun would be a bit bothersome. I’m sure you understand?” Well he hoped she would given how she described the sunlight. He decided to be a bit bold. “Might you know of a safe spot for someone like me.” His eyes were soft and he was calm but he really wanted to get a better look at he mare’s tail. It was unusual to him.

Oh goody! Another weary travel! He was a big one too with wings and an interesting coat. He would make for a great pet! She wiggled on the outside a little as if unable to contain her excitement. "Well, we can't have that now can we? I would say I know of a spot a few miles from here, but alas I cannot escort you. The sun is a bit...bothersome to me. However, you are more than welcome to stay here if you would like. I'm sure we can make some room somewhere, and because I'm full I can promise you I won't bite" She gave a chuckle and a wink over to him at the last part. The mare then came forward and grabbed the leg of her drained kill dragging it over to the side. He had probably already put two and two together at this point, but it was in the way. Her tail flicked and waved as she moved seeming to brush the bloodied dirt away. At his comment, she turned to look at him over her shoulder. "You're covered in poison? My you look quite strong and sturdy. How does that work?" Her head tilted in curiosity as she came forward to study the leaves that clung to his coat. Mayhaps they were the culprits?

Was she excited or disturbed he would be so abrupt. He listened to her and weighed his options as she dragged her kill off. There was no doubt about it now. As she cleared a space for him he was surprised when she came up to investigate his coat. She wasn’t shocked or appalled? He looked at her and judged her to be genuinely excited. Having never met anyone who was excited to hear about him he was a loss for words for a moment. Clearing his throat he found spot to begin, with her offer. “I’d be happy to stay here if you’ll allow for it miss?” He tilted his head to get her to give her name. “I’m happy to hear you wouldn’t bite, I think that would be unpleasant for the both of us.” He lifted his leg with the band on it. “This band shows you a leaf right? It’s called sumac.” Probably why I was named such. “I’ve always had it on me in small amounts. I could break it off and it would wither and die but more would take its place. I have the leaves only in my mane and tail and yet as they grow and die they break leaving bits and pieces in my coat.” He moved his tail so the deader ones in it would rattle again. It meant a few of them broke and disappeared into the thick of his tale but he didn’t care more would grow back.

Rayne stretched her frame and tail for a moment working the kinks from her body. She had been still for a while and even though it was daylight she was up. Usually she would be at least trying to nap, but this stranger was too interesting and wonderful to miss! "Well of course you're staying here else I wouldn't use precious energy to move my food." She huffed giving him a look. Her golden eyes then studied his body, mane, and tail as if scrutinizing them and the leaves. "Oh biting never did anyone harm." Rayne gave him a suggestive wink then commented, "I don't think I've ever met a living plant before...tell me, what is a...sumac? I don't think I've ever heard of it before and this is my first time seeing one." The mare came forward sniffing at one with her nose dangerously close. It was then that she immediately backed up but only because she sneezed. She grunted and shook her head before getting back in his space again careful of the sun, her tail waving behind her gently. Rayne looked at his massive tail as he displayed it quite curious. "That's very interesting...I wonder who cursed you to be such." The mare said nonchalantly before giving Sumac back his space looking at him with curious eyes.

She was very direct. Not that it was a bad thing Sumac amended to himself. It was nice to meet someone who spoke their mind and didn’t just use their body to assault. He simply arched a brow to her biting comment before eying her kill then looking back to her. Biting certainly did harm to that poor thing. Those eyes of hers were intense seeming to study him and focus the whole of her being on him. Oddly enough he didn’t mind. In a strange way he wanted her to be pleased with him. Perhaps it was her interest in him. It was unexpected and unusual. Her question on the plant was a good one and he was about to answer when she came close to him. Far to close; he started to admonish her but she backed up and sneezed. He gave a relieved sigh and decided on giving her a small bit that should stick. “Sumac is a plant that if touched gives the living creatures around it a reaction to. It’s a defense mechanism to keep the plant alive and safe. The reaction might not appear at first but the more it’s handled the more likely you will react. No living creature is immune.” He looked at her curiously when she mentioned curses. “I wasn’t cursed. I was born this way.” No one had cursed him or his mother. Though she had passed away while he was young, due to him.

"Ah. Life finds a way." She mused as he explained his plant. No living thing, huh? Then she was safe. Her ears flicked a moment as she came forward and sniffed at his body again along with the plants attached to them. Her nose sometimes touched at his frame which she figured alarmed him, but she made no motion to stop her scrutiny. It was then that she came up to his front and stared into his eyes curiously. "You were not cursed but born into this? My that is a strangeness. Did your parents have this sense of ailment? Possibly handed down from your father since your mother was not immune?" She asked tilting her head a little as her nose touched his playfully, a giggle forming in her throat. "Then what are you? Dead like me? For you are still living and carry these death trees about, yet you yourself remained unharmed, dear." Her eyes watched him with a smug smirk on her face, the mare backing up in order to give him room to process what she just said.

Life finds a way and so does death. When her nose touched him he jerked and tensed automatically. The last one to do that had been one of Cardinal’s children who he quickly dumped in a lake. He snored and looked at her ready to scold this curious female. When she looked into his eyes and spoke his eyes turned sad. “Yes I am strange.” Thoughts of his parents crossed his mind. “I wouldn’t know of my father, my mother died when I was young. The first victim of my condition.” That giggle she had done was out of place with the rest of her words. He didn’t place it until he tried to answer her question. “No I’m not dead.. like … you?” It ended in a question all its own. He shook his head and stared at her blinking a few times and shifted his wings, tearing at the ground once with one slow hoof drag. He shook his head again and his ears flipped back. Instead of being openly rude he opted for the more polite option. “I fear my name is not dear to anyone. “ He kept his voice calm while he looked at her trying to figure out if he was looking at a corpse or not.

Rayne chuckled flicking her ears a little watching him with her curious, golden gaze. "Well then maybe your father was the affliction of your condition. How he never passed it on to your mother is a curiosity." Her tail waved behind her as she gave a thought, nostrils flaring taking in Sumac's musk. She giggled a little coming forward to touch her nose against his gently. "Yes, dead like me. I am one of the night children, claimed by immortality. Most call us abominations, some blood drinkers, very few call me kin. I am a vampire, Sumac." The mare said simply fluttering her eyelashes toward him in a seductive manner. She could hear his pulse and feel his heartbeat. Her mouth began to salivate with the need to feed. Not out of hunger, but simply for taste. "You don't know that. Someone may and will eventually hold you dear to them. By the way, what is your name, plant heart? I am Rayne Moonblood." The white mare backed away and gave a bow before slowly slinking up and straightening her frame out as if offering herself to the stallion."

Sumac shook his head. “I think she had a higher tolerance than most. I was young when my condition poisoned her. Perhaps she only met him once and was near a river to wash, I have no way of knowing.” It wasn’t something he thought much on anymore. He used to quite often, but the time for that had long sense passed. Having spent so much time keeping others away it was difficult to let the mare come close enough to touch him repeatedly as she was doing. His muscles twitched to pull back but he stayed where he was listening to her. She was a vampire? His pulse sped up a bit at the word. It was something he had heard of but had never met. His mind told him to be careful and that this mare was far more dangerous than she let on. But another part of his mind whispered that even if she did kill him would it matter? Then he would never hurt anyone else again. He wanted to ague with her about someone holding him dear but decided it wasn’t worth it, besides it would be rude to a mare that he just met and had no cause for such. “My apologies for my rudeness Miss Moonblood. My name is Sumac Gartha.” He dipped his head slightly in a small bow not even realizing he was exposing his own neck more until he was in the middle of it.

"That would make sense she was the one who birthed you. I could see how her body built a tolerance." Rayne commented matter of factly. It was clear that the mare did not have much tact, but her eyes held a sense of sympathy...well as much as she could muster. Being undead and mostly a loner had devoid Rayne of most interactions and emotions. It would take a lot for her to form any sort of connection to anything. Rayne started to notice his uncertainty about her touch. But she continued to persist - gently of course. Scaring this stallion could spell bad news for her unless she was careful with him. And the fact that the stallion was not used to being touched for all of his life would definitely shock him to have someone - especially a mare - all over him all of a sudden. The mare came around his front again as he bowed in greeting, revealing his neck. Usually Rayne would have gone for the throat by now, but there was something about Sumac that didn't encourage her feeding habits. Was it because he was made of poison or possibly because she had fed only a few minutes before. Whatever the reason, with his neck bared, she was not hungry but indeed she reached over and gently started to nibble at his skin, gently picking in seductive nips. Her mouth reached his ear after what seemed like ages of her affections, and with a sultry greeting, she whispered into his ear, "No rudeness at all, Mister Gartha. The pleasure is all mine." Rayne gently licked the edge of his ear nipping the top as she then almost glided back from him giving the stallion space. She began to wonder now how is blood would indeed taste to her, and if she would ever get the chance to try. "Now that we are better acquainted, whatever shall we do?"

Sumac wanted to tell her that it wasn’t like building up a tolerance to poisons. Rather his plants one started with a tolerance that was slowly wittled down until everyone was susceptible. Still it didn’t really matter in the long run so he just let it go. While a blood drinker the mare seemed up understand. On top of which Sumac was distracted by her constant touching. When she started to nibble on him moving up his neck he froze it wasn’t in fear but simple and plain shock. Her lick and greeting made him come back to reality with a jolt back. His head came up and one of his front hooves moved in the soil turning it a bit. His eyes were wide with shock and the muscles on his back leg twitched. Still the mare had given him space for which he was grateful for. He was certainly not used to be touched so much ever. “Were you a normal Azerin I would at this point be finding a source of water for you to wash off in.” He shook his head and looked at her curiously trying to figure out if he should still do that or not. He had found that those who washed themselves quickly, or in a certain filly’s case were dunked in, they tended not to be poisoned by his condition. “As for what to do now, I fear I’m at something of a loss.” He glanced around at the surrounding area. “I’m new to this place. I’m leaving my old home as far behind me as I can go.” He had no desire to speak to this mare about his servitiude to Cardinal and the herd of the Six, but if asked he would tell. The mare had a right to know who she was dealing with if she wanted to avoid the six or possibly being found by them then perhaps his company was not the kind she would wish to keep. “Might I know if I am intruding on your or your herd’s land?”He really did not wish to upset a herd of vamperic azerin. .
