Our story begins at the beginning of the 10th Pass. Approximately 600 turns since AVIAS successfully knocked the Red Star off of it's orbit. As Riders began to accept that they'll never be needed to fight Thread again, a massive effort at expansion was made. Many riders took to exploring Southern and settling what would be known as Weyrholds where dragons would be raised by their riders and put to work at various crafts.

The weyrholds of Southern were planned to be self sufficient with little to no need for tithing though their internal structure remains relatively unchanged from the weyrs they originated from. Instead, barter and trade became routine. The Expansion moved swiftly and within a generation, much of Southern had been explored and settled. As free land dwindled, people began to look at the long forgotten Western Continent and it's potential.

The Western Continent has been isolated from the rest of Pern for the majority of recorded history. Little was known about the continent until the major weyr's of Pern; Benden, Fort, Telgar, as well as Southern and Monaco Bay banded together to send exploration crews. Preliminary reports were disappointing as they described a barren desert, ringed by active volcanoes.

Quote:
(Info dump, will sort later)
Pacific Northwest-esq landscape and ecosystem. Lots of temperate rainforest & marshlands.

!!!Map Needs Updating!!! Relative idea remains the same, eastern mountain ranges changing & Marshland being reduced/replaced by more temperate forests among other more minor adjustments

- Grey/white is mountains. The central point will be the large volcano. Believed to be dormant by most - no eruptions or smoke since settlement.
- Peach is sandy beaches. More common along the northern shore but the nicest is along the southern. The shores around Dorras are a mixture of pebble and sandy beaches, the forest runs right to the shores.
- Light Green is temperate forests, solid earth though with a mixture of tropical and temperate flora and moist atmosphere.
- Dark green is marshy swampy area, wet ground usually with a foot or so of standing/slow flowing water. Land around weyrhold will be built up out of the marsh to allow for dragon population

Serrrat is located along one of the largest warm beaches in the marshy land between it and the only hotsprings on the western half of the continent.

Eastern half is uncharted. It consists of less hospitable land (large desert in the middle and active volcanoes)

Fauna

Serrat Canon
Most of Western's Fauna have remained visually the same as their mainland counterparts. The isolation and unique ecosystem of the island continent has taken the native species along a separate evolutionary branch.

For a basic rundown of canon Flora and Fauna look Here. Below lists the changes and species unique to our canon.

Wherries
Western wherries have developed wide webbed feet for navigating through the marshes and long spur claws for self defense. The spur claws of the male wherrie exude a powerful neurotoxin which is believed to be used in hunting, as the wherries themselves are immune.

An attack by a wherrie is often deadly to humans. If the wounds themselves don't kill you, the toxin will. Symptoms of wherrie toxin include intense pain at the site of entry followed by tingling and numbness, dizziness and vomiting, a drop in blood pressure, and convulsions. Death usually follows within a hour depending upon amount of venom.

The effect is lessened in dragons. Consumption usually results in indigestion, vomiting and a general weakness that lasts one to two days, more so if more than one wherrie is consumed. While some dragons have shown a strong resistance to wherrie venom, especially as wild and domestic species have cross bred, they are still encouraged to eat from domestic flocks when at all possible.

Tunnelsnakes
Tunnelsnakes come in many different forms, most prevalent in the swamps of Western are large reptilian tunnelsnakes also equipped with a highly toxic venom. They can grow up to 15 - 20ft in length and are a major threat to human settlements, and are a challenge for the average wher. They are semi-amphibious and aggressive towards humans and most other creatures. Their main source of food is fish and wherries though they will eat anything they kill.

Spinners
Brightly colored spinners frequent the deeper parts of the jungle, anywhere from 5 to 10 inches wide, they are deadly to humans. They prey mainly on small species of avians and firelizard young. Gold and Bronze firelizards use fire to kill and chase them away from their nests.

Wild Whers and Herdbeasts
Whers and herdbeasts, as introduced species, have stayed relatively unchanged, though wider feet and a lower center of gravity have been noticed in comparison to domestic varieties. Where herdbeasts are found more often in the higher elevations and temperate forests, whers can be found everywhere from the swamps to the hills surrounding the mountain bases.

Flora

It is safe to assume that almost every plant found on Earth can also be found on Pern, with the exceptions of cacao (Chocolate) and coffea (Coffee) plants.

The diet of Western is based heavily on seafood, though beastcrafters keep a ready supply of red meat available. Starches consist mostly of rice, with wheat and tubers being imported from the mainland. Tree and vine fruits are also very common, with mangos and grapes being common and high quality. Tree nuts and dried fruits are popular snacks and treats among the young and those away from home.

Notable pernese species are:

Redfruit
Similar to orange trees, they produce a red, plum-like fruit with a citrus tang.

Klah
The bark of the Klah tree is harvested and dried, then brewed as an alternative to coffee. It is a bitter stimulant that bears a vague resemblance to chocolate and cinnamon in taste and aroma.

Needlethorn
Thick bramble bushes with 2-3 inch slender straight thorns. These thorns are hollow and are often harvested and used as hypodermic needles.

Numbweed
Numbweed when boiled down and made into a cream absorbs into the skin instantly, numbing the surface and dulling the feeling of deeper nerves. The effect lasts a few hours unless reapplied. Gloves are required when handling numbweed.

The brewing of numbweed takes three days and must be done either outdoors or in a well ventilated area as the fumes are noxious.

Fellis
Fellis is a small flowering bush who's juice has a soporific effect when taken in small doses. It can be addictive if taken for long periods of time. It is carefully measured and administered by trained Healers.

Serrat Canon
Many of the native plants of Western are poisonous when consumed or touched. It is unwise to eat anything out of the jungle unless you know exactly what it is, and which parts are edible.
