To say that Before was grumpy about pod duty was like saying the sun was hot. After his unintentionally extended stay inside one of them as a punishment (or a case of power tripping higher ups, it could be either one) it was to be expected that he wasn't looking forward to spending a couple of hours babysitting the sleepers. Mostly because he wouldn't be able to shake the feeling that some of them shouldn't even be sleepers.
Hopefully, his shift-partner will show up soon and won't mind all the junk food Before brought with him. His usual fare of homemade baked goods required too much prep time for him and so he made do with the contents of the vending machines. He may have accidentally bought a moist towelette packet or two, how he could have mistaken them as a candy bar was a mystery but that was Before for you.

Melvin liked pod duty. The place was quiet, leaving time to think, and you could take a breather yet still look productive on paper. The Lifer had also made cleaning the entire pod area a personal mission in life (however short it might become), despite how impossibly large the area seemed. He had gridded out the area in a neat and orderly map that he kept folded in his pocket and left a bucket of cleaning supplies at the place he last finished off on his previous pod duty.
Being here, alone, to think and clean was a great thing. However, when he checked the chart, he saw he was having a partner.
Sighing, he stepped down the steps to the pod area and looked around.

Before's mood improved marginally when his shift-partner arrived. He gave a wave, "Heyo~, good to see you again," a small smile, "Looks like we're gonna be stuck together for the next hour or so." Then he leaned back on his chair, holding out a clipboard while checking off some of the items listed, "No unusual activities so far, and according to the release sched, everyone that's supposed to be unpodded are unpodded."
There might have been a hint of bitterness as he said that. He reached down to grab a chocolate bar and began unwrapping it, while nudging the bag of junkfood towards Melvin with his foot.

Melvin had been hoping he'd just been cleaning all day, but his partner was here and already seemed to check the schedule for today. Seeing as he was here, cleaning would have to wait. At least till he figured out if he could tolerate the man or if he was better off just going back to his made-up task.
Finding a seat, he dragged a chair over and made sure it was clean before sitting down. When the bag was nudged by a foot, he curled his lip. "No thank you." He didn't like feet touching his food, packaged food or feet in sneakers counting.
"Before, right?"

The Mist quirked a brow at the rejection, not realizing it had been the contact between his footwear and the plastic bag that the Lifer didn't like. "Don't tell me, you're like the boxer-dude in that you're a health food buff too?" he asked wryly. Well, that just meant there would be more for him to eat. "And yup! You got it, Elf," he nodded, leaning back in his seat before taking a bite from his chocolate bar.

"No. I'm not a health buff." Though he did tend to like health-conscious people. "I - just had a big lunch." He lied, and watched the other enjoy his chocolate a moment.
"Elf? Is that going to be a name now?" He really wish it wouldn't be.
"What have you been up to?"

The Mist just quirked a brow then shrugged, whether he believed the Lifer or not wasn't really important. At the request for a clarification, Before nodded cheerfully, "Hey, it ain't a reference to them Santa-things or the shoe-maker ones. Too tall. You're moruva Lord of the Rings Elf, y'know? Lego-something and that dude, Figwit." The lopsided grin on Before's face was pretty much an open admission that Melvin just sealed his fate of being referred to as that nickname. Forever.
Before shifted in his seat, the chipper grin sharply down-turning into a scowl, "I haven't been up to much. Literally. Got podded and got forgotten in one. You weren't on pod duty lately and forgot to verify if someone was supposed to be let out, were you?"

Melvin frowned at the admission that Before thought he was basically a little fairy, and while he wasn't a bulky Sun, he wished he'd been given more credit. Lifers got some of the worst outlooks if you were a guy it seemed. While he couldn't benchpress his weight or green hair on every part of his skin did not mean he was some sort of pansy. He was just - well....clean! It was perfectly respectable.
Crossing his arms about his chest, he thought about it for a split second. "No. I actually do my job around here. I've been trying to get this place in order and clean it up a bit. You must have not been that impressive or memorable to be podded and forgotten. Don't you have any friends?"

Before did not understand why he was getting this sort of attitude from the Lifer. Elves were badass in Lord of the Rings and looked good while doing it! Or at least that was what his Bro told him. Hell, he'd been paying Melvin a compliment >C
He could take the rejection of his food offering, but being dissed for being unimpressive? Well, sure there may have been some truth to that but Before hadn't seen Melvin around enough to remember him either! Before squared his shoulders back, teal eyes staring straight at the Lifer's. Despite the natural cheer in the former Lifer's voice, he smiled a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, "If you were doing your job, you'd have seen in the records when my release date was, wouldn't you? And as for "cleaning it up a bit", what's It? Protocols and procedures? Shouldn't you be bringing that up with Dwight? Or Clarice?"

Melvin continued to stare back. "Are you saying that all the blame for you not being popped out of a pod they put you back into was my fault? I'm not taking that blame. What happened for you to be put in the pod in the first place?" He wasn't taking the blame for poor management of files.
"And IT I mean this." He uncrossed a arm to wave at the the floor and a nearby pod. "Just cleaning. It's more productive than sitting until pod duty is over." Which was what they were doing now.

That smile remained on Before's face, tone still cheery, gaze still unbroken, "Is that what I was saying? I thought I was just confirming things." He leaned back in his chair then took another bite of his chocolate. "You'll find people get podded for all sorts of trivial s**t while the ones who go about trying to kill fellow trainees more than once are let off easy."
He wasn't going to name names because that was being a gossip. And Before didn't like gossiping with people who had pretty much shot down all his attempts at making friends and playing nice. Even if they did have an awesome-looking weapon when summoned.
"Agree to disagree, then. And if that's what you consider being productive, by all means~" With his free hand, he gestured for the Lifer to go about with whatever he had planned while the other crumpled the now-empty wrapper. Some small part of him wanted to toss the wrapper at the general area Melvin had gestured at, but Before instead stuffed it into the bag. Mostly because while he was that petty, he also knew they were being monitored and that antagonizing others wasn't his thing.
He rummaged through the bag of junk food and when he pulled his hand out, he had a bottle of carbonated lemon-flavored water in his grip. "Never had this one before. Hopefully it won't taste like medicine," he murmured. Whatever notion Before might ever be struck with to interview Melvin for that assignment from Aria, it was certainly dead in the water at this point.

Melvin could only think of one person who might consider killing someone, who was on thin ice, and who generally wasn't liked by many people. Despite how the conversation was going, Melvin continued to talk. He liked talking, finding out things, and cleaning could wait - for now.
"Did you upset Rep or is this someone else?"

"Hmmm?" Before tilted his head, pausing to twist the cap open and to take a tentative sip of the beverage. He let the liquid linger in his mouth before swallowing, and after deciding it didn't taste that bad he took a bigger swig. The Mist propped his elbows atop the chair's armrests, "Is someone else what? The one who upset Rep or the one Rep upset or...?" OwO

Melvin was left staring at Before as he took his sweet time answering, or so he first thought he would. It turned out he was playing hard to get when it came to giving a response, and Melvin's fingers dug a little more into his crossed arms as he glared back.
He could walk away. He could get up, clean a little, and not bother talking to Before.
But he was curious, and the fact he didn't have a answer bothered him. He wanted to know. He just had to play that he didn't care.
"Is Rep the guy who got off easy despite trying to kill a trainee? Is that the guy you are alluding to, or was it another guy?" He said, trying not to talk through gritted teeth.

Before chuckled lightly, as if Melvin had just said something mildly amusing. "Iunno, there might be a lot of those types in Deus or they might just be isolated cases." His shoulders rose and fell in a nonchalant shrug, "But I don't blame you for wanting to confirm things. Going around assuming s**t about others is just... what's the word...?"
