_________APPEARANCE ▪▫ Blessed with her mother's soft, blonde hair and blue eyes, Shiranui is quite the beauty, although she will adamantly decline your compliments and try to convince you otherwise. It gets curly when it's humid and is straight for most other circumstances. It is down to her mid back, but most of the time it's in a braid down her back. Since Shiranui is technically disabled(thought she hates to admit it) she lacks muscle in a lot of places normal people have them, therefore making her body small and slender. She's not really all that short, but many people think her to be a child at first glance. Her appearance, or rather, how she appears to others, is not as important to her as it should be, so she wears whatever is comfortable(sweaters and jeans, more often than not) whether is necessarily 'trendy' or not.
_________PERSONALITY ▪▫ First impressions might lead you to believe that Shiranui is a work-oriented, mature girl, but she's really quite the opposite. Of course, with almost everyone, she's kind, sensitive, and soft spoken, making sure that the words she will speak are censored. She is somewhat detached from the world whenever upset and she will certainly take the chance to hide from everyone else. Though when someone pushes her buttons wrong, she will become diabolically cunning. She has superb intelligence, a keen memory, and high mental proficiency. She owns a genius mind fueled by insatiable curiosity that she must try everything at least once. If she is stuck with a problem, she will invent a new solution. She is realist adroit in self-preservation, she will not hesitate to take the easiest way out. When cornered, she will be unscrupulous in her means of escape. She is independent and assured to the point that she will chase after her desires all by herself and trying to offer her some help will only make her angry. Sometimes, Shiranui can be nosy, but she won't be giving away any of her secrets in exchange for your well-guarded information.
_________BIOGRAPHY ▪▫ Shiranui was born a loving, caring girl to two doctors in a city near Tokyo, Japan. She was naturally a very obedient child although it was not expected of her. Her parents were busy most of the time, so she was practically raised by her twin brothers, who were six years older than her. Shiranui technically wasn't supposed to survive the birth. She was too weak, as her mother was an avid smoker, and kept doing so during the pregnancy to keep off the stress of her work. She didn't even want another baby that much anyway, but her husband had been dying for one for literally years. They were both doctors, master surgeons, if you will, and almost always had important things to do, and didn't have time to spend taking care of another child, even if they wanted to. Her mother, Rosa, never took time off after she recovered from the problematic birth, and didn't stick around to watch her child heal in the hospital, and thought her husband Sakaki wanted to, he couldn't. However, they were well off and had a nice house and could afford a babysitter most of the time.
_________Shiranui spent the majority of her childhood alone, and in and out of the hospital. Her immune system was very weak, and was declining over time. Instead of attacking dangerous things it attacked healthy tissue, giving her a lot of problems. It would eventually kill her, doctors figured. She basically spent all of her elementary school years in the hospital, learning from the nurses. She admired all of them and wanted to be just like them. Her dad would stop by every once in a while and read her a story and say encouraging words, as that was all he could do, and Shiranui loved him for it. The only family member that ever stopped by, and sometimes she couldn't even hug him. He used to always say she was just a "dragon of a girl in a fragile package."
_________Sometime in her middle school years, doctors had stabilized Shiranui's condition and allowed her to go home, with lots and lots of medication. She could never go back to school though, and had to homeschool herself, since her parents bought her anything to help her learn. She was a naturally smart girl and learned with ease. She even picked up knowledge from some of her parents medical journals and multiple encyclopedias that they had dozens of around the house. She was bedridden most of her preteen years, and as her teenage years stumbled around she began to get better, it seemed. With lots of physical therapy and even more medication Shiranui would not have to be restricted to the indoors. It was recommended she stay inside though, to avoid getting sick. But Shiranui could not wait, she did as much as she could then collapsed after about an hour of the outdoors. It was then that the doctors recommended she use a wheelchair. And she does, on her 'off' days. The girl seems rather happy to be social despite her exceedingly fragile state.
_________About a year later of her slowly diminishing life, her father disappeared from work one day. No one knows why or what happened, all they knew was that he was gone. He had no history of depression; he was truly a man of good nature. Eventually rumors came up of a lot of people going missing. Her paranoid mother however, started blaming her daughter for Sakaki's disappearance. She went insane and started neglecting Shiranui until her coworkers eventually found her and after she was fired, she was sent to therapy. Rosa is doing much better, and is trying to forget about her husband. Shiranui however, never forgot the stress her mother caused her and they are not on great terms. She currently lives with her mother, and their only source of income is Shiranui's insignificant job at a hospital, which Rosa mostly spends on cigarettes and alcohol.
_________Around this time, Shiranui began to get depressed. Her life was monotonous and painful, and no one in the right mind would want that kind of life. Her brothers were successful working men and had no time to come back home and help when Shiranui was managing it just fine. No one was really even that excited when Rosa had an accident: Shiranui's younger sister Kirino. It just seemed like another responsibility. The girl currently doesn't attend school for obvious reasons, and spends almost all the time at home taking care of things around the house, and studying. She heard about NerveGear, and with the hope that playing games would take away the pain, saved all her money for about a year to buy one, and she was pleasantly surprised with what she found. Now, she's online constantly in a pain-free world, only leaving for emergencies.

(hotaru = firefly) In game, Hotaru is rather largely unchanged from her real-life appearance. Whereas in real life her hair is blonde and her eyes are blue, she chose to change her hair to blue as well with entry into the game. Her hair is only slightly longer, and most of the time is down like it always is. Otherwise, she looks exactly the same, just with a palette swap. She looks also slightly more childish. Hotaru outside of the game is rather... terribly skinny and frail, however in game she looks pretty normal regarding weight.
